I don’t know how many people saw me as I kept my head down, hidden under a blanket. Can you imagine anything more embarrassing than me being pulled by a wire cable onto the back of an ambulance. For 69 years of my life I am the one who has done the winching. It is my raison d’etre, what I am known for and now I find myself disabled and unable to pull myself out of the biggest disaster of my life. It all happened on September 18th, unusually for him he was spending time getting me ready for our trip to East Lothian the next day as I was booked in to pull 6 sheds. The most I would have ever done in a day. He decided to change the oil in my winch gearbox, not a bad idea considering the amount of work I was being asked to do. He could not undo the plug, so took the decision to drive the 4 miles to Dr Wight to ask them to do the necessary. They were in the process of moving sites so we went from the new workshop to the existing one where Graham drained the oil and filled me with new mineral lubricant. I noticed a dark pool under my middle but thought that it was oil that Graham had spilt. It wasn’t until we got home and noticed an even larger deposit that it was realised that I was leaking catastrophically from the engine. He made the call to Gosford that I was out of action and it could be terminal. They would need to find an alternative method of moving the sheds. As luck would have it, it was not as bad as I feared. The junction where the pipes from the oil filters meet had split. All it needed was to be braised up, refitted and with no apparent leaks I am restored back to full health. Whether I will be asked back to Gosford remains to be seen.

On Our Farm
October 11th 2023 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. I went to talk by a very successful dairy farmer in Wiltshire a few years ago. He was milking over 400 cows at the time and turning over a very impressive profit. Low turnover of labour was a major factor he said in the success of his business. Asked how he achieved this he explained that a good wage and where possible employing couples was the key as they are both really invested in the success of the farm. I always remembered this and have tried to employ couples if possible ever since. However nobody ever asked him what happens when they go on holiday. I can tell you it is a bit of a nightmare! For the past 2 weeks, Bogdan and Diana have been in Romania buying a plot of land and Yurii has also been off looking after his wife who has just had a baby born by caesarean. The old man was away on his 39th(!) golf tour of the year and with Jess teaching all that was left was Al with his new knee, my Mum and I. Somehow the cattle were fed/bedded, eggs collected, pullets checked, treehouse cleaned and crops drilled, rolled and slug pelleted. Some seriously long hours were worked but everything was completed on time. Harvest finished at the start of September during one of the best spells of the summer. With both the combine and baler having major breakdowns in the same field I was not in the best of moods. Thankfully the spring malting Barley yielded just over 7t/ha, the quality was good and there was Getting ground ploughed for organic oats plenty of straw which was a pleasant surprise considering how awful it looked in May! All winter crops are now sown and up - even the organic oats which were drilled into less than ideal seedbeds a couple of weeks ago. I don’t think I have ever seen the oilseed rape look so forward at this time of year, plenty for the pigeons to eat! Winter barley looks great and the winter wheat has finally won its battle with the slugs. Interestingly the fields which had cattle muck were under much higher slug pressure than the non-mucked fields. This is something that I have not noticed before and having spoken to a few neighbours they are finding the same problem. On the farms that used both pig and cattle dung, only the cattle mucked fields seemed to have had slug issues. Once again we are experiencing a very mild back end with plenty of grass growth. As long as the fields do not get too wet we will keep cattle out for as long as possible. We have seen a rise in the egg price which is great however typically production is below normal Stocking up the Treehouse wood supply due to ongoing issues with broodiness and smothering which is becoming very frustrating. The treehouse continues to be very popular with very high occupancy levels which is fantastic. Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. The next 12 months of reports may be more like Guy’s “from the boundary” tales as opposed to Hugo’s busier dayto-day stories. On the home farm we have signed up for a potential solar park which including our neighbours land, necessitates 1600 archaeological trenches to be dug. Just as with any major project (HS2 anyone?) they are running behind, so it is now too late to contemplate planting winter wheat given the plasticine nature of the soil at cultivation depth. And sadly, on this land that means a spring crop is a non-starter as the preparation should be done by now. What has been incredibly insightful about this process is that it has highlighted how rubbish I am trying to farm in places, and more positively what good the lack of mixing soil horizons has done. The top 75mm of soil is dark and friable and then it quickly changes into a stickier soil. In the worst instances I have only 150mm of topsoil, which is 60+% clay itself, sat on impermeable clay. It at least explains why I struggle to grow anything other than winter wheat. The cover crops I planted after harvest were an attempt to keep the fields drier for the excavations, but so far the covers have kept the soil in such excellent order and is so beautifully friable the endless 4x4s seem to cut in even easier! The plan for the rest of the farm is to now broadcast a cereal when the field is returned and pigtail the field crudely for the winter. This should at least mean there is something green on the land over winter which should help to start to heal the damage and then in time dry the land. Then in May this will be sprayed off to allow a kill of blackgrass and we can carry out some remedial cultivations to try and repair the more compacted areas. Another cover crop will be sown to try and harvest the sunlight, provide some colour to lighten my mood and provide an excellent entry to first wheat next season. Well, that is the theory! Fortunately, I still have the land at Spalding to keep my inner farmer entertained. And we are now in the season of Russian Roulette. What will break first, the weather or my patience? It is very noticeable that having no organic matter returned to the soil for 25yrs, the soil lacks any resilience to weather events, so I am very wary delaying drilling by too much in fear of never getting drilled. Yet in a sign from the Gods to delay drilling further on Friday evening the hydraulically driven vari-cool fan on the drilling tractor disintegrated covering everything in oil, the result of which was the tractor and drill being abandoned on the headland for the weekend. With spare parts supply becoming more of an issue each year and no-one keeping bits like this on the shelf, we are most likely going to have to wait for one to be shipped from Germany. At present a Solar Park seems very attractive…

Is your system profitable, how does it compare to others and where are the opportunities for improvement? Financial analysis Financially, there are some good tools available to allow you to answer these questions. At SAC Consulting we have developed our own forward budgeting tool called AG2023, which allows us to project how changes to your cropping/livestock system, will affect your profit margin. Funding assistance up to £1,000 is available through the Farm Advisory Service for a business efficiency specialist advice plan. Carbon Benchmarking Monitoring greenhouse gas emissions is not just a case of looking at your sources of emissions, but an opportunity to benchmark against other businesses and consider your business efficiency. Benchmarks are available against farms with a similar enterprise type with Average and Top 25% benchmarks available, allowing you to drill into how you compare for each input, i.e. fertiliser, fuel, feed etc. The farmers who make most efficient use of their resources are usually the ones with the lowest carbon footprint per kg of output. One farmer who completed a carbon audit for a beef farm identified the need to increase soil pH and optimise fertiliser applications, which in turn allowed a reduction in fertiliser usage. Additionally, the farmer is aiming long term to reduce lime requirements as they will have reduced the acidifying effect from fertiliser usage. The changes made have resulted in a 37% reduction in nitrous oxide emissions. The business is now employing rotational grazing and is focused on increased sward clover content. This is just one example of changes which are possible following a carbon audit as it looks at business efficiency from a different viewpoint, highlighting opportunities for changes which can save on inputs or maximise production levels. Funding continues to be available under the Preparing for Sustainable Farming scheme. For more information on either of the above, please contact your local SAC Consulting office.

October 11th 2023 Three years ago 200 acres of ground that marches with Sandystones came on the market. We were fortunate to be able to buy all of it bar 4 acres which was sold to Energiekontor who are developing a 34 MW windfarm at Pines Burn near Hawick. The site next to our new land is designated a blade transfer station and it is where the 21 blades, measuring 70 metres each are offloaded from the road transport, stored in specially designed cradles before being transported individually on a blade lifter. The one photographed below is the only one in the UK and can lift the blades over trees, war memorials, lampposts etc. It is an amazing piece of technology being able to lift the blades up to a 60 degree angle. The final transport from the transfer station to the wind farm is held up waiting for electric and telephone lines that currently cross the road overhead to be buried. Waiting for this work to be completed and Guy Lee then fitting in with Police Scotland schedule to provide the escort has delayed completion date by months. The political spin put on so called ‘Green Energy’, is that it is a cheap and cost effective solution to our move away from fossil fuel dependency does not bear out in reality. As many businesses have witnessed the cost per kw of electricity may have come down from the peaks of 2022 but the standing charges have increased astronomically. We have two supplies - one is a non-half hourly 50kw where the standing charge has increased from £2.12/day to £5.31 an increase of 150%. The other supply is an 85 kw half hourly meter where the standing charge has gone from £1/day last September to £16.40/day a year later. As this is only used during certain times of the year like potato and grain stores, the small amount of electricity we used last month cost £23.92/kw. In the past investment in home produced power, such as wind or solar, really saved on bills as the cost was all in the daily consumption. With the change to the charge now being on the supply rather than use, it is impossible to offset these huge increases. I can’t see these charges coming down with the need for massive investment in infrastructure such as transmission lines.

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. The doomsayers have been forecasting an apocalyptic spring and summer involving drought, wildfires and the end of life as we know it. This is all because of El Niño. Apparently when it stops raining in the North Island, the dry will be the worst on record and government experts are urging farmers to ditch stock early so they don’t get caught out. Apparently climate change and El Niño will combine to make the weather as bad as the summer of ‘73/74. The farmers up North are pointing out that the land is so wet they can’t even run a dog across the hills without causing landslides let alone destock for drought. Down here in the south we are picking up some benefit from all this. Waiting to be milked NZ milk production, due to wet cold spring conditions in the North Island and the predicted dry summer, is expected to be down on last year which has lifted international prices. Meanwhile we’re having a great spring and our milk production is going well. The wheat is starting to shine and the spring sown mustard and radish is coming up. We have had some exciting wind storms which are a feature of El Niño, with several incidents of cars and camper vans being blown off the road; and we are irrigating which is early but not uncommon; but the Last of the lambs about ready for slaughter crops and stock (and old men) love a bit of sun on our backs and dry feet. As an old friend told a young bureaucrat at a meeting to do with the future of farming and climate change, “young lady you haven’t lived long enough yet to offer advice!” Very proud of her dead fish

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. Today we’re writing about the movement of goalposts! We’re still on with negotiating our higher tier agreement. I cannot quite get my head round the complexity of the scheme. It is truly frustrating when you feel like you’re 90% there and then the advisors seem to magic up new rules or changes to prescriptions as they go along. We have opted to put an option for cattle grazing on a number of parcels. The guidance available to us suggests 60% cattle LU and our stocking rates meet this requirement. The advisors now suggest 70%. Two months ago, it was suitable to combine two options, now those two only work under certain circumstances. Really the goal posts are literally moving as I write this. The frustrating thing is we’ve invested so much time and effort into this, and are almost there, and peeking round the corner is the glow of an SFI agreement, which is similar money for some options and significantly less hassle. When you see the headlines from Natural England about stewardship application numbers reducing, I can guarantee it’s because it’s so very complicated and non-user friendly. Higher Tier should be renamed as Headache Tier. It feels as if Autumn is just round the corner after a particularly miserable summer and one to forget here in Northumberland. Wet, low dry matter grass has reduced livestock growth rates and therefore left less finish. Harvest has been a challenge and subsequently straw has been chopped or rotted in the field. Drilling into sodden ground, or soon to be sodden, has been less than ideal from a crop establishment point of view. Farm diary update: Spaned lambs are rotationally grazing red clover fogs, all calves have now been vaccinated ready for spaning and winter housing. Due to a shortage of straw, we will try and keep the cattle out as long as possible, but that is literally in the hands of the gods. Our experiment of the Brassicas sown with Westerwolds is looking very well and hopefully there should be some regrowth to lamb on in the spring. A late spring followed by a wet summer has added to all our woes. The reduction in BPS now starts to really hit, just at a time when we really need it. It provides an insurance/income during weather challenges, enabling farmers to get from one year to the next whilst producing food in less-than-ideal circumstances. It’s a real pity the policy makers in Westminster find it so easy to decide what should and shouldn’t happen. They perhaps need to hear the words of Dwight W Eisenhower (President of The United States of America 1953 - 1961) “Farming looks mighty easy when your plough is a pencil and you’re a thousand miles from a corn field”.

October 9th 2023 Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. It’s not often we receive 100mm of rain in one contiuous dump, but that is exactly what we have just had from early evening on 6th to midday on the 8th October (time of writing). Burns and drains are bursting at the seams and newly sown wheat fields are sodden. The countryside is a bit of a mess and will take a few days to dry out. Thankfully the forecast is for a drier spell which will hopefully allow fields, crops and livestock time to recover. As I surveyed the damage this morning, I committed myself to invest in future proofing the farm for these extreme weather events. Any drainage, building works or infrastructure projects must be designed to have the capacity and robustness to withstand the worst that nature can summon. Potatoes being lifted in a rare The weather has been poor for most of the past month. sunny afternoon Harvest was saved by a good spell of sunshine during the first week of September but apart from that it has been wet and windy. Barley was all cut here by 8th September. Yields of Laureate seem to be slightly above average and all went for malting (a few deductions for skinning - don’t get me started on that nonsense again!). All rye has been sown and all wheat (except those fields following potatoes) also drilled. Most sowing was done in less than perfect conditions, but the Lemken drill can cope admirably when the going gets tough. Hopefully the wheats (Colosseum, Stokes and Insitor) have the vigour to get going in this wet autumn. Lime and dung were also spread when conditions allowed but Wheat sown on the 30th September, submerged on the 8th October opportunities have been few and far between. On road trips north into deepest Angus and rural Aberdeenshire uncut fields of barley are not uncommon. Any crop not cut in the first week of September has seldom had the chance to get cut dry. Bouts of straw also lie in many parts of the country as a damp reminder of a harvest most will be glad to forget. A few dry days in September, large machinery/combine capacity, growth regulators on crops and a dose of luck were all that stopped this harvest turning into a disaster for many cereal farmers. Don’t tell my agronomist but all autumn sown crops remain unsprayed with a long list of herbicides outstanding. Between wind and rain the chances of getting the sprayer in action have been limited. Perhaps, however, with the recent deluge the herbicide is better in the can than down the drain! The first of two consignments of deer left the farm in early October. The stags were the heaviest we have achieved and conformation grades look good too. The poor harvest conditions have actually been good for grass growth and this shows in the deer results. The rut has started and the older stags now spend most of their time corralling females, fighting off rivals and roaring their heads off. It’s quite a spectacle and the roaring of stags is a primeval sound that sends shivers down your spine. Looking for love.
