BORED
Christmas came and went as did New Year. For over a month I have been nowhere. Bogdan occasionally starts me up and moves me away from the pile of woodchip I stare at every day to load the bunker for the biomass boiler. Then he drives me back again, slightly further into the barn which keeps the drafts out but I am still exposed to the elements. It was extremely cold last week, and whilst ‘Big M’ the sprayer was parked on the heated drying floor I was frozen to my chassis. Just because he has got pipes and pumps he enjoys preferential treatment over yours truly. I have important bits too you know and I am much older than him so why can’t I have a warm bedroom as well? I know I might leak a bit, nothing a small nappy wouldn’t absorb. I don’t know why I’m asking as it is a lost cause.
There must be someone, somewhere who wants something pulled. I have a shed to move here later this month which should stop me seizing up but hardly a journey to warm my wheels and tyres. I will ask him to go through my customer database and communicate with the most likely candidates enquiring if they have any work. The problem is he charges a lot, if it was up to me I would do it for the pleasure of the pull, but not him. Life is not all about money as I see it. It is more about a taut cable and the thrill of seeing that static object move from where it has been sat for the past year and slowly, slowly come towards me. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than a job well pulled.
Here’s hoping that when he is away yet again, orders for work will come flooding in and with a younger operator I will be out and about doing the job I love.

On Our Farm
January 15th 2025
Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year.
Christmas seems to get busier every year as the children get older. This Christmas had everything from a cousins wedding, reels party, Boxing Day football match, children’s meet, family shoot and a New Year’s Eve hockey match! The house never seemed to be empty with a continuous stream of cousins and friends passing through. There were some early mornings and late evenings spent on the farm to ensure all the jobs were done without clashing with the day’s entertainment. Frustratingly I always seem to get ill at Christmas and this year has been worse than ever. The cough has now gone but I have lost my voice for over a month now which is very frustrating for me and a blessing for others?!
I enjoy spreadsheets and analysing how the business is performing financially. With so many different enterprises it is important we don’t lose track of were we are. I simply don’t have the time especially during the spring and summer to do it all myself. I am very grateful to my father, as many of you know has a passion for spreadsheets, for helping. Our year end is December 31st so we always kick off the New Year with a review, the highlights of which are below. 2024 was wet, cold and dull, not good for arable farming! It was my 7th harvest since I came home and by far our worst yields across the board except for Winter wheat. Sunlight, yields and margin were all down 20%. Thankfully the hens fared much better helped by a low feed price and good egg price; it looks like it could be our best year ever. The cattle have done ok but nothing record breaking, the increase in fat price over the past few months has really helped. It has been another good year for the Treehouse. Bookings were down slightly on the year but this was not unexpected with the cost of living crisis.
Everyone is back on the farm after their Christmas break and we are getting ready to deplete, move, wash and restock one of the hen sheds. I hope that we don’t have another cold snap as it makes the whole job an absolute nightmare with water pipes freezing and sheds getting stuck to the ground. We managed to take advantage of the recent good weather and get the muck barn emptied which is always a relief. Travelling conditions were perfect and the spreader barely made a mark.
Not long to go until the start of the Six Nations, one of my favourite times of the year. Could this finally be Scotland’s chance? As always we go in with high hopes of finally winning the championship!

Talking......from the boundary
January 15th 2025
I feel very fortunate to be asked to walk over farms and estates in the pursuit of sport. Two days ago I was on a friends farm in Northumberland, his daughter has taken over the running of the shoot with real enthusiasm and great organisation. The party was a mix of young and old, whilst we ‘Old Farts’ complain about Government and taxes, the conversation with the generation down was much more about carbon and technology. Our host works for a Natural Capital investment business, another of the junior members was involved with technology analysing carbon sequestration and crop demands using satellite imagery, one was in high end UK tourism mostly with Americans and the fourth had returned home to take on management of the family estate. They were all full of hope and prepared for the challenges of the future.
Fellow writers in Agrimart this month are all venting their anger at environmentalist and politicians. From New Zealand to Northern Europe directions and diktats are imposing regulations that are neither practical nor workable. They are dreamed up in offices or more likely ‘written from home’ with no experience of the effect of their decisions on the ground. None more so than the £100 million tunnel on HS2 to protect bats.
We have just had an excavator here digging a ha-ha between the garden and field by the house. Impossible to see from the garden side the ditch is deep enough to protect us from any invaders either 2 or 4 legged! We will put an electric fence in the bottom of the trench which will maintain the illusion and mean we will not need to build a wall to keep stock out.
We are off to Kenya next month visiting our youngest daughter and family who live in Nairobi. This time we are going on a guided seven day trek with camels carrying all the gear for sleeping and eating in the bush. With no electricity to charge devices next month’s article could be challenging, I will have pen and paper but catching a pigeon going in the right direction could be more difficult. If nothing appears from me in the March issue don’t be alarmed!

Talking......New Zealand
Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing.
One of the things that makes the Ashburton district a great place to live is the people… when it counts, they tend to get stuff sorted.
Lake Camp is a popular water sport lake in the Ashburton high country. In its natural state the lake level varies considerably. At least 70 years ago a diversion from a small river was built to put water into the lake to keep it full. This was in the days when permissions weren’t needed other than from the landowner. In this case the landowner built the diversion.
In the 90’s bureaucracy required this diversion to be retrospectively consented. Unfortunately 2 years ago this consent not only expired but a flood destroyed the diversion.
Last year was a humdinger of a drought in the high country and without the diversion the lake dropped so low that it was unsafe for boating and the good people of Ashburton came to me for advice on how to renew the consent for the diversion.
I naively thought it should be a simple process.
The effect on the river, the environment and biodiversity values are minimal and well understood and have been acceptable for the last 70 years. The local Ashburton district council (ADC) gave their support and there was a groundswell of support from the community. The cost to reinstate the diversion was estimated to be only $2500. All good.
Unfortunately, as happens in those bloody awful zombie movies… the half dead, recycled bottle top fleecy wearing, bearded, sandalled vegan environmentalist automatons who work for regional government and the department of conservation emerged from their caves and drew up a list of reasons why the community couldn’t possibly be allowed to do anything that encourages fun… and hell is going to freeze over before they’d support an application.
The ADC estimated the cost of getting the consent renewed (including the obligatory bribery now required to buy local Māori support) to be in the vicinity of $800k thanks to this opposition.
It was agreed not to go ahead with the consent and victory was declared by the vegan zombie bureaucracy.
I went up to Lake Camp a few days ago and miraculously pipes and rock dams and channels are once again diverting water; the lake is full and what is the ultimate 2 fingered salute from Ashburton to the kale swigging zealots… we’re having fun.

Talking......from Lincolnshire
Stuart returned home following a career working as an F1 car mechanic, which took him all around the world Stuart is now happy to be home working with his dad, Giles. The pair farm a total of 220 organic hectares, in which deferred grazing the Luing cows on the 110ha hill is a key part of the farming system. For Stuart, returning home has come with its challenges, however his experiences outside of farming have helped cultivate an adaptable mindset, which he tries to apply to the business.
Hugo Lee: Sandystones
Hugo and wife Jess moved back to the Lee family farm in 2017. Since returning home, Hugo and Jess have helped to transform the mixed farming business, which has grown to accommodate ~8000 organic free-range hens with eggs supplied to Waitrose and ~500 finished Angus cattle. In 2019 Hugo and Jess also designed and built a treehouse, which they now let out as a luxury destination. Change has presented challenges; however, the pair have met these head on.

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.
When is not a lot of rain, a lot of rain? On the first working Monday morning of the New Year Lincolnshire ground to a halt, literally. 43mm of rain overnight had caused every conceivable road to be flooded and matters weren’t helped with the last few mm falling as snow causing lorries to jack knife at the smallest sniff of an incline. The first school run of the year took over 3 hours with poor Vicky trying 8 different routes before finally getting home, whilst ignoring a policeman’s advice to retreat to a nearby village hall “and sit it out until the water levels drop”… Immediately global warming and climate change are to blame, government ministers want flood prevention schemes installing at enormous cost and all the while the Environment Agency are sat in warm offices achieving the square root of zero. We live in a man-made environment here, and therefore it needs maintaining which the EA sees as an unnecessary cost when they could all have a pay rise instead. The Fens are relatively well catered for by our drainage boards (not to historical standards but it is ok), but the reason for the flooding in the areas between the Fen and the “high lands” is that the EA drains can’t hold the volume of water, nor discharge the water quick enough due to being silted up. Some poor Celt dug the drains as deep as was requested by a Dutch engineer, not for fun but because it had been a calculated requirement. Our drains no longer resemble the vision of these early settlers, and as such have become unfit for purpose; and then the country floods. It would almost be funny if it were not symptomatic of a deeper malaise in society. I thought that last year the shooting field was full of despondency regarding agriculture, but this year we have moved on further to despair. There has been a lot of talk of farm investment projects being cancelled as there is no desire to add capital value to the business, crops being produced at or below the cost of production, and complete uncertainty as to what the next 5-10 years hold. I struggle to see the SFI being continued long term. I just can‘t see the government justifying wild flowers to Joe Public when Rachel “from accounts” has to wait 18 months for a brain transplant. The other side of the coin is that the next decade could be laced with opportunity. To decide upon a course, ignore the outside noise of social media, fads and governmental soundbites, and get your head down and work. Just like the Scots did after the Battle of Dunbar. When those captured were sent South to dig the drainage ditches on the Fens and in doing so created something which has stood the test of time, at least until the digger drivers started “working from home”. My own approach to water management

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise.
Having ‘done’ Christmas turkeys for 14 years I struggle to recall LBT (Life Before Turkeys). What on earth did we do in Decembers past?!
The run up to Christmas is now our most pressurised time of the year and the preparation for this one immovable feast becomes all consuming. Anything not turkey related is passed into January making this month also very busy. Piles of office work, non-urgent tasks, meetings, appointments, social engagements are all postponed until after we have stopped spinning. I’m not one for New Year resolutions. The short, dark days of January are not really the time to be forming new habits or depriving oneself of the vices that make life in the cold north bearable. Selfimprovement can wait until the warmer months. I do however allow time to reflect on the past year and make a few plans for the year ahead. A key focus has been improving systems and processes to make jobs easier, safer and quicker to complete. Working alone most of the time I need to make work manageable and enjoyable and investing in things that allow that to happen is money well spent. The major problem is having the time to implement these improvements but once they are done the time savings and pleasure I get are immense. My children laugh at how excited I get over small, boring changes I make. Why do they not share my joy in new shelving for the turkey delivery van, a new access ramp to the pig shed so that I don’t need to reverse when mucking out, colour coded files to make quality assurance inspections plain sailing or even the simple pleasure of a well hung and swinging gate? Some changes are small, cheap and cheerful whilst others require more planning and resources, but all are designed so that I work smarter not harder. This mindset must continue into 2025. The recent cold snap has concentrated pigeons into large flocks that are descending on unprotected OSR crops. Our early sown and well-established crops will cope with a bit of grazing but large number of hungry doos can devour a crop in a matter of days if not vigilant. The farm is now reverberating to the sound of gas bangers.
The sprayer has spent the last month with Wull Scorgie (fabricator and namesake of the robust, custom-built Scorgie booms) getting repaired, squared-up and rebushed after 16 years of reliable service. Hopefully after a lick of paint fit again for another 16 years. It now awaits an annual service and NSTS certificate allowing it to be ready for the first liquid fertiliser application on OSR and rye as soon as NVZ and weather conditions allow.
Spring will be on us before me know it!

Christine Beaton, SAC Rural Business Management Consultant
A new year and new requirements
In preparation for the gradual transition to the new agricultural support framework, last year’s update from the Scottish Government puts some meat on the bones of the Agricultural Reform Route Map. It provided further details on how agricultural support will change in Scotland from this year, and the actions that farmers and crofters will have to take in order to be eligible for the new support payments.
For suckler cow units, currently eligible for the Scottish Suckler Beef Support Scheme (SSBSS), a key change will be that from 2025, calves will only be eligible for payment if their dam’s calving interval is 410 days or less. For example, a cow calving on the 1st March this year, needs to have produced her calf by the 14th of April 2026 for her next calf to be eligible for a SSBSS payment. Simple from a theoretical perspective, however, in practice, not so straightforward as the gestation period of a cow can easily vary by ~ a week from the 283 day ‘average’; heifers can take longer to get back in calf, as can cows with twins, or where there has been a difficult calving.
For businesses with two calving periods who allow ‘good’ cows and heifers to slip round to the next block; you need to weigh up giving them another chance to conceive versus the loss of next year’s calf premium, if the calving interval exceeds 410 days.
While advance notification will be given, the Scottish Government has also announced that in future years, the maximum calving interval could be reduced by up to 10 days. If you think that you may lose calf payments this year due to extended calving periods, seek advice now with regards herd nutrition, replacement heifer management and health and welfare planning.
Most people should now be familiar with Whole Farm Plans. From May this year, in return for eligibility for basic payments; farmers will have to declare on their SAF that they have carried out at least two activities that are relevant to their business from the five available options. Carbon Audits, Biodiversity Audits and Soil Analysis are required to have been carried out in the last 5 years. Animal Health Plans and Integrated Pest Management Plans (IPM) are required to be completed annually. Further details about IPM plans are available on the Plant Health Centre website.
From this year, new Cross Compliance conditions are being introduced for wetlands and peatlands (GAEC 6 – Maintenance of soil organic matter). The new standards which apply to land with peat soils >50cm in depth with a near natural vegetative cover and also wetland habitats include:
• Ploughing and cultivation – new drainage and maintenance of existing drainage systems that causes further drying out of peatland.
• Activities that cause damage to the vegetation cover exposing the soil.
Further information on changes that will be introduced in 2026 will be announced this summer.

......Organic
January 15th 2025
Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically.
Every year we all try to start the year with a hint of optimism, new year, new ambitions, new challenges – well this year it’s a little different. There is optimism for the farm and what we are doing day to day, optimism for what we are producing from the farm and delivering for the environment; however, the bigger picture is significantly less pretty. The more I consider the contents of the budget and the impacts on all of us in agriculture, the more frustrated I get with this government, and they’ve only been in power for six months. Today there is a rally being held at County Hall in Morpeth. I hopefully will make it even though I have a longstanding meeting in the diary in the morning. We have definitely reached the stage where we need to keep this issue in the press, whilst keeping the public on side. The challenge is that we are a long way from Westminster and those that are meant to represent us are not prepared to step out of line. County Hall has been chosen for today’s gathering in order to reach the local councillors. Maybe the hometown of our local MP, Hexham might be a good location for the next gathering. Interestingly, our MP Joe Morris is Treasurer of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Rural Services. It is a cross-party Group of MP’s from rural constituencies that come together around 4 times a year to promote debate on the provision of rural services. However, for a rural MP, with a rural role I fear his rural knowledge is significantly lacking.
I have always felt that the role of DEFRA secretary is probably one of the most challenging yet perceived as a bit of a duff cabinet position. The complexity of our industry, the links between us and other industries and sectors is complex and wide-reaching and in my opinion few ministers over the years have ever really grasped it. Irrespective of whether I like them or not the two that I felt understood how complex it was were Hilary Benn and Michael Gove. The ones that currently stand out as not having a clue are Liz Truss, Therese Coffey and our current Minister Steve Reed. How do you get someone who has no interest in our world to understand how debilitating this budget is to agriculture? Not just the APR, but the BPR, NI, etc etc. We have to keep on trying to educate them.
On a farm level, we’re chipping away at the winter jobs, finishing the vaccination programme with the cattle with the final dose of Bravoxin being administered. We’re on with stone walling repairs. Typically, I managed to get the Waller booked, but have had to wait for stone to be delivered as they’ve only just dug all the snow out of the quarry the last couple of days. Hopefully we can make progress soon. Hens are doing well and currently laying well. Sheep are looking good with scanning taking place in a couple of weeks.
