NOT WANTED
With a full tank of fuel and an overnight bag packed with all my needs for a week away, I was very disappointed to be told by the organisers of the Farmers Rally in London on November 19th that I had not been selected as one of the chosen few to represent the industry in the Capital. I thought the reason was rather spurious, they claimed I was not at the cutting edge of agriculture. Rather than being a bright coloured modern tractor I was better suited to a museum than an important cog in current food production. I ask you, me not an important cog? If I refused to work they would soon be missing the egg on their breakfast plate. Sometimes you are just not appreciated. I did have a record day the week before the big rally. It was a clear, cold day and we set off in good time for the 42 mile journey to Halls Farm near Penicuik, I pulled a shed first one way so they could clear the muck at one end of the house and then from the other end. This all went very smoothly and by 12 o’clock I was on the road making the 53 mile journey to my next job at Town O’ Rule near Bonchester Bridge. I arrived at 2.30, exactly as arranged, to pull their hen house into position for the next flock of hens. With that job complete I set off on the journey home which I made still in daylight. The total distance driven was 107 miles, and two happy customers with their hen houses where they wanted them. With my oil leaks fixed, brakes working well I feel as fit as I have for a long time. Please think of me staring into a bunker full of wood chip as you spend time with your families over the festive period. If I am lucky he may acknowledge me by wishing me all the best for 2025. More likely he will walk past ignoring my presence until someone needs me when he will jump in (not literally at his age) and expect me to suddenly be at his beck and call. Unfortunately, with a new alternator and batteries, I start every time and can’t protest my disgust at the way he treats me.

CONTRACTORS SERVICES
On Our Farm
December 11th 2024
Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year.
The past month has been relatively quiet with the majority of cattle now housed and the next hen shed depletion scheduled for early in the New Year.
We have finally got round to ‘sorting out’ the office and meeting room which have both gradually acquired clutter over the past twenty years. Six trips to the dump later and it feels like we are working in a brand new office!
It always amazes me how much firewood our treehouse accommodation uses. We are forever running short of seasoned wood which is frustrating. Cutting and splitting wood is a slow laborious and expensive task with a chainsaw and splitter. I have been looking for a better solution for a while and last week we hired a neighbour’s wood processor. Wow what an incredible machine!
Output has gone from five tattie boxes a day to 12-14. We now have at least a years worth of wood in stock.
Bogdan and I are halfway through clipping 46 fat cattle which are heading to Stoddarts on Sunday. I am the first to admit our cattle are never the cleanest in the sheds. All cattle are bedded using a bedding machine and we are perhaps a little mean on straw. However, I do find that Angus cattle will lie in the dirtiest place possible if they have the option. We have run a mixed batch of continental and Angus cattle before and the continentals barely needed clipping whereas the Angus were filthy. I am probably guilty of over clipping but we take pride in sending clean cattle to the abattoir and we are averaging six an hour currently which is not bad going for this time of year.
I know farming is a lifestyle as well as a job but I have to admit, sometimes, feeling a little jealous of friends who don’t work in our industry and can down tools at 5pm on a Friday and enjoy the weekend. They can take holidays whenever they want and don’t have to fit it in around harvest, lambing, calving etc. However, I have to remind myself that they can’t as easily watch a hockey or rugby match on a Wednesday afternoon, attend mid-week school concerts, plays or even the end of term carol service. During the busy times when I feel there is no end in sight and work can become all-encompassing I have to remind myself of this.
Despite the current political situation both north and south of the border I am still a firm believer that we work in the best industry in the world and should be proud of it.
The news yesterday that one of our advertisers is missing presumed dead after being caught in Storm Darragh flooding is unbelievably tragic. All our thoughts are with his family and friends at this terrible time.
Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise.
Having given Labour’s budget both barrels in my last Agrimart article, I must admit I attended neither the London nor the Edinburgh rallies. During the London event I was busy weaning deer (a big job that involves extra help that had been arranged weeks before) and at the time of the Edinburgh event I was under severe pressure to get our new turkey processing line finished ahead of plucking (a project long in the planning but ultimately only completed at the last minute).
The Mizuri (shown) and Sumo direct drilled wheat trials. The slugs showed no preference and chomped through both! Luckily all growing away now after some late season pelleting The elf that should’ve been left on the shelf.
The effectiveness of such rallies can be argued but I would have liked to have attended both to show my support and feel I had done something. I was disappointed by some of the public reaction to the cause on radio call-ins or social media during the London event especially. The changes to APR and BPR are a complex issue to explain, and the asset rich/ cash poor, low profitability and multigenerational scenario of many farms is also difficult to succinctly translate to a lay audience. The public are fickle, and we must tread carefully if we are to keep the majority on side. I do wonder that rather than calling for protection of APR/BPR we should be calling for all inheritance (aka death) taxes to be reformed/abolished. They are generally disliked by the wider population and the previous governments have toyed with the idea. Being taxed after death on wealth you have worked hard for, already paid tax on and keen to pass to next generations is understandably the most unpopular of all unpopular taxes. Currently the very rich can easily avoid paying death duties by various legal and accounting practices but the modestly wealthy are often caught out. I think every homeowner, business owner and prudent saver in the country would be receptive to the idea. Abolishing the tax is unlikely but what about lowering the level to such an extent that everybody can afford to pay. The current 40% is absurdly high and money spent avoiding it is well spent if that’s an option. But say it was reduced to 2% and suitable thresholds and caps placed, then the hassle and cost of loopholes and trusts wouldn’t be worth it for most. Pay the tax and move on. Death taxes stifle intergenerational ambition, make bereavement all the more stressful and cause assets to be sold or split up. Better to be a nation that builds wealth rather than taxes it. Tax me on the services I use, the income I generate or the items I buy during my life but not on my lifetimes achievements once I’m gone.
The past month has been hectic in the preparation of turkey season. A new processing area has been completed which should hopefully make our lives a bit easier going forward but in the short term has caused me significant stress. It worked well during plucking with only a couple of minor teething issues and saved us considerable time.
Wishing all readers a restful and peaceful Christmas.

I’ve just had a quick look back to last year’s Christmas article and the year before, and yes, it appears that those two years motored along at speed as well, but I really can’t quite get over how quickly this year has gone. Interestingly, this time two years ago we were TB testing (that must have been a treat just before Christmas) and struggling to get tags delivered with the postal strikes. Last year we were feeling relieved to have got our Countryside Higher Tier over the line, but we were wondering whether the job would have been a lot simpler to have settled for a Mid Tier agreement. Now, we feel incredibly fortunate to actually have an agreement. It was a difficult time getting the agreement in place, but the frustration and concern to not be able to get an agreement and the double whammy of cashflows being destroyed by the reduction in BPS along with all the other budget changes is being felt by many. We went down to London on the 19th. There were a lot of people there – definitely more than what the media reported, probably between 40,000 and 60,000. Have our voices been heard? Its hard to say, but we felt it was the first chapter in making this government listen. Was our MP listening? Possibly, but it was evident they had all been given the ‘script’ the night before. They were saying the words, but really had no grasp on what these collective changes and challenges will do to our industry. We will need to keep talking about this, we will need to make our voices heard, maintain momentum, but need to keep the public on side. What wasn’t reported in the mainstream press is that the Metropolitan Police has said this rally was well organised and peaceful. They would be happy if all rallies went this way, and we not only left the place tidier than when we arrived, but also donated over 6.6 tonnes of food to the City Harvest food bank, which is over 15,000 meals. There are not many rallies that do that.
On a farm level, the new hens are busy laying, so hopefully by the new year we will be up to full production, which will be a huge relief after such a tight cashflow. We have also moved packers. So, after more than a years notice we are now putting our eggs into Lintz Hall and looking forward to building a relationship for the future. It’s the right time for us to make this move and it definitely feels right to have our eggs packed in the North East rather than the South West.
Scanning has gone really well after a couple of poorer years, with our new herd of Luing Heifers 100% in calf. This is a relief, as they are new stock, with a new Bull. It feels good to end the year with positive news. So, Claire and I would like to thank our team for working with us throughout the year… Christmas Party in January! We’d like to thank our customers and suppliers, and we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and the very best for 2025.

December 9th 2024
Our golden spring has crashed to an end and we’ve been brought back to the harsh reality of a tough windy dry Canterbury summer. The Nor’wester wind has been sucking the ground dry for weeks and to cap it off, gusts yesterday topped 100mph and toppled irrigators. Watering days we can’t afford to lose. On the up side, we had a major win around our regional council table 2 weeks ago. We voted down the draft regional plan that the Greens and other activists were using to try to lock in our previous socialist government’s attempt to destroy our economy. It was a close vote but we won. The pernicious nature of the old Labour/Green policy was that to get permission to use any natural resources for anything, (including domestic water supply and septic tanks), we had to bribe local Māori to get their consent… 3rd world corruption. This has been costing our communities $millions in expensive processes and lost opportunities. An example has been a major catchment restoration programme down our way designed to improve water quality and stream flows and recreate wetlands. This should have been approved quickly and without contention. Instead because as a community we wouldn’t pay the bribe, the process has taken 3 years and will cost close to $1m. In the meantime the community has been paying several $m in targeted rates to fund the programme. If Jeremy Clarkson thinks he has problems with his local council it pales into insignificance compared to our regional council. And yes I’ve been on this bloody council for 5 years but have been consistently voted down on most issues until 2 weeks ago. So a major win.
Unfortunately Chris Allen, a clever, articulate, popular and all round lovely man and good friend (and very highly regarded farm leader) and who was at the top of my list to replace me on council was electrocuted in an accident yesterday. We are reeling.

After a devastating budget for agriculture delivered by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Labour party’s Rachel Reeves, in Westminster a little over a month ago which led to organised marches and protests in London and Edinburgh I thought I would look a little closer to home to see if there are any positives that can be drawn from the Scottish Budget.
The Scottish Finance Secretary, Shona Robison, delivered the annual Scottish Budget Statement on the 4th December to the Scottish Parliament, setting out her taxation and spending plans for 2025/2026.
The Scottish Government now has full control over agricultural spending. At first glance, the budget announcement would lead you to believe that the £660m pledge to farming and crofting for such crucial schemes as Basic Payment Scheme, Greening, Less Favoured Area Support and Voluntary Coupled Support is an increase, however given the rate of inflation, this is actually a reduction in real terms. This is disappointing given that the block grant received by the Scottish Government benefited from an 8% increase.
The promised return of £46m previously deferred from agricultural funding now has a clear schedule: £20m is to return in 2025/26 for capital expenditure with the remaining £26m to come a year later.
Grant funding for woodland creation has reduced to around £53m whereas funding for peatland restoration has increased substantially to around £35m with an aim of restoring 15,000ha of peatland.
Budgets for National Parks and Forestry Land Scotland have both been cut. The Land Commission have been tasked with finding justification for a Carbon Land Tax. There is no change to the Land Reform allocation and there will be £15m to be spent on flood protection, which won’t go very far. More general changes tabled in the budget are a 3.5% increase to income tax thresholds to the basic and intermediate rates, however, thresholds for higher earners are set to remain frozen, placing a larger burden on those on higher incomes and further widening the gap between other parts of the UK.
The Additional Dwelling Supplement will increase from 6% to 8% effective from the 5th December. There is a £284m increase to fund new homes and local authorities will get a further £1b to spend.
Unfortunately, I do not think any of the key points reported can be considered positive despite looking hard for that silver lining. The most positive part is the return of the reallocated agricultural funding, which it could even be argued, should never have been reallocated in the first place as those funds were meant to be ring fenced.
As the Government do not have a majority, they must now work with other parties to pass this Budget Bill. It is not expected that there will be any major changes although there is a possibility that things might be tweaked to get the Bill through. I expect during this period there will be some lobbying by organisations such as the NFU and Scottish Land & Estates to improve the situation for their members. Perhaps without the input of organisations such as these the outcome here could have been worse, but I think their efforts are simply holding back the tide.

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.
As the rain beats down for the third consecutive day, Colby is now off until the New Year, there is time for a period of quiet reflection of the year just gone. What went well, and more importantly what didn’t.
The crops in the ground look well, with a customer’s direct drilled winter barley into spring oat stubble looking a real treat. Experience is now showing that cultivating land after spring oats is a mistake as the incorporated oat straw does seem to leave the land “wet” so direct drilling is the best method.
Having sorted my tractor conundrum, I have now resolved the cultivator challenge. It isn’t exactly what I wanted from an agronomic point of view but represents good value for a robust machine which will have a respectable resale value should it not perform as hoped. There is also the opportunity to pull a press or set of rolls behind it which will move us back to a one pass system. I have even had to swallow my pride and resort to ploughing. Some of the new land we have taken on this autumn has had sugar beet on it and was lifted in the wet so a reset was required. Cue a phone call to a kindly neighbour to scrounge a plough and we had it done in 3 days, just before the weather properly broke. The whole process has reminded me why I don’t like ploughing with horses’ heads being produced and watching the tractor sliding up and down the field sending shivers down my spine whilst contemplating the cost of thrashing the lumps into a seedbed in the spring.
With a lot of spring barley destined to be planted this coming season, I have decided my combine is not up to the challenge. I have contemplated buying a flex header for it to try and improve output, especially when the straw gets damp in the evening but they are £120k, or changing the combine will cost £250k on top of mine being part exchanged. The combine is now 10 years old which is when I would normally change it, but with commodity prices where they are it will battle on and I have found a friend who is over capacity so willing to come and lend a hand when required. This will put the store under pressure but hopefully this is a one off. After this season a lot of Worths Farm will have had a double spring break, and some even three years, which should mean we are back on top of the blackgrass and a more normal rotation can ensue.
May I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

The Farmers Rally in London was well organised, well attended and well reported although the actual numbers were considerably more than the authorities estimated. Word came back from the Police that they wished every demonstration was as well behaved and respectful as this one was on November 19th. It must be a first when rather than rubbish to clear up when everyone has gone home, there was sufficient fresh produce donated to make 15,000 meals. Almost 7 tonnes of home produced food was bought up to the capital and given to the London Food Bank – City Harvest who said afterwards they were overwhelmed.
The challenge is to keep up the momentum, local protests in Wales, Felixstowe docks, Dover, the Midlands as well as the NFUS organised demonstration outside the Scottish Parliament on November 28th all have their effect and make the point but not sufficient for a Government to back down on policy. The hope is that the tax bands, implementation date or thresholds may be changed without attracting a lot of publicity and exposing the Government as weak. Farmers are very aware of the negative effect climate change protestors had on public sympathy when traffic was held up and daily life severely interrupted and are being very careful to keep the consuming public on side.
The bulk of arable fields in Scotland grow combinable crops for alcohol, predominately malting barley for the whisky industry. A recent report showing a decline in alcohol consumption in the UK, which I presume will be mirrored in the Western world, does not bode well for the future of a staple crop in Scotland. Since 2004 consumption has dropped by 16%, with reportedly 20% of the population not drinking at all which must be a reflection of the changing ethnicity of the UK. I always struggle with the concept of preserving land for ‘food production’ as opposed to energy, when electricity is a greater necessity for human life than alcohol. We can manage without either and our forebears enjoyed wine and beer in candlelight. Our arable net margins were down by 13% for this harvest compared to 2023, which was the year when fertiliser prices were almost double. It clearly demonstrates the importance of price and yield rather than input costs. Solar production for 2024 was 57,500 kws, 2023-60,800kws, 2022-64760kws, given this very low amount of solar radiation (and very high rainfall) it is of no surprise that yields were down. On the other hand our egg and beef enterprises are performing well with high demand. With the future being so unpredictable, planning ahead is tough but with every challenge there is an opportunity - as ever it is seeking those out. Wishing all our readers a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.
