May 2025 ARE THEY EVER HAPPY? Talk about farmers moaning, it is either too dry, too wet, too windy or too cold. Are they ever happy? I have to listen to their moans every morning – “When is it going to rain?” I hear one ask the other. “Was it this dry, this early in 1976?” I overheard the young un asking him. I was alive then, I had just left the forces and was being operated on by my new owners, the Christian father and son team, who cut me up, shortened my chassis, made my spades, removed the old winch and crane I was born with and fitted a much larger heavy duty winch and cable. My memories of that hot dry summer are hazy and blurred - so are his by the answer he gave “I can’t remember” he replied. I have had a couple of pulls in the last two weeks. One was on this farm where I was forbidden to drive on the grass being saved for silage. I hardly make a mark, the ground is so dry and the grass pretty short. I did just manage to pull the hen house into position in a very restricted space. On Monday I drove over to Over Langshaw to move Sandy Bergius’s shed. The shed is on a built-up site as the field is on a steep slope. I am parked up below the bank with the cable digging into the hard standing. A while ago! Fortunately there were no issues and in one pull had the house ready for the next flock. He missed out an opportunity to recover a bogged stone crusher stuck on a farm near Kelso. He said he was too busy, well he might have been, but I certainly was not and would have jumped at the opportunity. On Our Farm

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. A couple of months ago some farming friends from Hampshire came to stay. The discussion over supper one evening turned to the weather and global warming as it does when farmers are present! They feel that weather patterns are definitely becoming more extreme with either too much rain or not enough. They asked if I was concerned about the relatively dry start to the year we had been experiencing. It reminded them of the start of 2022 which resulted in a bad drought in southern England. I told them not to be so silly; it always rains in Scotland...! I hope that I am not wrong, with 14mm in April, 0.6mm in May so far and absolutely no sign of rain for the rest of the month things could start Rape enjoying the sunshine getting pretty serious. I have never seen our river so low at this time of year before. At present all the crops are looking good, it is amazing what a prolonged period of dry sunny weather does. The only crop looking thirsty is the Spring Barley that did not have seedbed fertiliser. For the first time in 10 years we spread NPK on the seedbed and what a difference it has made in these dry conditions. The only fields which didn’t receive it were mucked and definitely look further behind and in need of some water. It will be very interesting to see what they are like by my next article if we have not had any rain! All grazing cattle have now been turned out and are doing well with grass growth just about keeping up. Silage fields have been shut up since January with first cut less than a month away they need to bulk up fast otherwise first cuts could be pretty disappointing. As fat prices start to slip back I hope we are not hit with the perfect storm of severe drought and a falling market. Having spent an eye watering amount on cattle this year a drought is the last thing we need. T1 on Spring Barley On a positive note all this dry weather currently makes life a lot easier. We are washing and moving a hen shed as I write. This is usually a job I dread as we traipse around in a cold, wet, muddy field dismantling, washing and reassembling a shed. The whole process has never run so smoothly. I have to admit I quite enjoyed it. Hopefully we get some welcome rain soon. In the meantime we must all enjoy the sunshine and not worry too much about the weather. I would take this spring weather anytime over the washout of last year!

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. The gods have been kind to us this lambing and calving with dry sunny days, albeit a little chilly at times. Drilled crops undersown with clover and grass are now all in, have been rolled and chicken muck has been applied. We are now working our way through rolling the silage fields. Time is motoring on with the hens. The flocks at Garden house will be going out in about six weeks – it feels like only a couple of months ago that they went in, but its over a year ago. This flock has been challenging. They struggled with ORT (a respiratory disease) early summer last year, over preening meaning they have looked a bit ropey all year. They’ve laid consistently at an ok level, but there’s definitely no records being set. Shell quality is slowly decreasing, which is normal, however our last few flocks have had good shell quality all the way through, so its disappointing to have a flock that’s just ticked the boxes, rather than shone. The management, care, feed, water, and staff input is all the same as previous flocks, so could be down to things outside our control; stress in the rear? Hatch stresses or even the age of parent flock. We are currently in South West France in Gers, west of Toulouse. The winter crops here are looking really well, maize is coming through and I think currently they are just drilling the sunflower crop. The rolling countryside is amazing, with lots of trees in the landscape and the region is dominated by farming. We are near Samatan, the home of Fois Gras. What I really like is the passion the French have for their home produced produce. Everything is marketed with a French flag on and there is little to no fast food in this region. The active management of water courses, roadside ditches and verges is evident, and you can see there is a long term plan for food, farming and the countryside that goes with it – everything working together in harmony… and not a pot hole in sight! Bureaucracy and legislation at its worst. Mobile service The calving of our new herd of Luings has improved as our knowledge of how to handle them has increased. We did add some 07802 201612 extra magnesium to their diet which may have helped things. Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. 80 years ago the war in Europe ended. My father’s artillery regiment, the Mid Lothians, was seconded to the US 10th Mountain division and fought up through the spine of Italy for the last year of the Italian campaign. In April of 1945 the 10th Mountain were attacking the Germans up the length of Lake Garda in northern Italy. The Germans blew up the roads and tunnels making it nigh on impossible to keep the guns in close support of the advancing infantry. So the men of the Mid Lothians commandeered 3 twin masted sailing boats from Malcisine on Lake Garda. They loaded a gun on each and sailed them up to Torbole, a small port at the head of the lake. The men of the 10th Mountain had a 20 hour intense Just after the battle for Torbole battle taking Torbole from the Germans who had armour and were defending with desperation. Reading the accounts of that battle it sounds like the last scenes from the movie “Saving Private Ryan”. Dad and his Scottish gunners sailed the boats into Torbole as the infantry were still fighting through the streets of the town. They unloaded the guns under heavy fire and crashed them into action helping the Americans push the Germans out of Torbole. The 3 boats spent the next couple of days ferrying the rest of the regiment’s guns up the lake from Malcisine. As the magnificent mountain men of the 10th advanced through Torbole they suggested to the gunners that if they were intending to be ahead of the infantry for many more battles they should consider fitting bayonets to their big guns! Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. We are now allegedly drier than Marrakesh, which is not the sort of headline we want during the growing season. The unseasonally hot weather last week at least was brought to an end with a fabulous electrical storm and a small, yet very much needed 4mm of rain. The spring beans had visibly grown overnight and the smell hanging in the air of damp dust is one of life’s great pleasures. At this time of year, I have the unenviable task of walking round assessing blackgrass populations in all crops. The winter wheat in general is really good, showing that delaying drilling into October is effective, but sadly does mean we risk not getting drilled up. What is very noticeable is that the wheat which was mauled in late just has no energy, I assume caused by compromised rooting exacerbated by the dry conditions. The hybrid barley has had 2% sprayed off for blackgrass. The barley looks well but it is not as competitive as I had hoped. What I am struggling to understand is land which grew no blackgrass over winter now has concerning populations in the spring barley. Some of this land won’t make it to harvest, but it is irritating and gives further credence to the fact we are selecting blackgrass for spring germination. Traditionally harvest preparation happens in the few weeks before the combine starts rolling, but this year I am trying to be more organised. Given the ludicrous prices for new combines, ours has had a major service, and new LED lights, rear wheels and GPS steering kit are on order. The first part of that list was obvious, and we have even changed the main rotor bearings just as a precaution. The lights are so I can see the next run at the headland (a failing of most A size 10 boot for reference… combines) and just being able to see more than 5m in front of myself would be useful. The fancy steering kit is courtesy of a local farmer who is developing AgOpen GPS very successfully. He did offer me the option of programming and installing it myself, which given I am more from Jethro Tull’s era of technology I politely declined! The rear wheels may seem an odd one but for some reason my combine was sent on smaller wheels which has always meant it has sat back meaning the angle of the header has been wrong making flat crops a struggle to pick up. Hopefully we won’t have flat crops but if we do at least picking them up will be easier. The effect of government policy and commodity prices are now beginning to show here. There are good farms coming to the market, whether for sale or CFA. Dispersal sales are becoming a weekly occurrence which should make me nervous, but all I can see is opportunity. There have been herbal leys established with apparently little thought with what to do with them coupled with discussions with farmers who don’t know what to grow anymore. Interesting times. I have no doubt that every farmers article will start with the lack of rain in the past two months and the dry forecast ahead. As I look out on our small array of solar panels I can report on record production in March and April with 42% more electricity generated compared to last year. It is not surprising that the oilseed rape looks so happy having absorbed so much solar energy. Chris Clark and I were on the same HND course at Seale Hayne, we both met our future wives there, we played in the rugby team, and we were in business Guy Lee together for seven years fattening free range pork outdoors in the early 80’s. We then moved to Scotland and Chris and Fi bought a hill farm in the Yorkshire Dales. Struggling to make a living on a 170 ha of inhospitable land, they survived on B&B, holiday lets, grants and subsidies. He then downsized the business and found that with less inputs the farm became profitable. The family have now moved to North Devon from where Chris has just published a book jointly written with Brian Scanlon whose career has been in management consultancy and banking but had no association with agriculture. The title is The Profitable Farm and I can assure you it is not bedtime reading. You need to wrap a cold flannel round your head and read small chunks as it is heavy on economic theory, it does challenge everything we take for granted. The premiss of the book is that every farm business has a point of maximum sustainable output (MSO) when all natural resources available have been consumed and no artificial input has been used. I am so impressed that someone I shared a cottage and attended lectures with and then selected pigs for our London butcher customers at 6am on many a frosty morning - has written It’s in the genes! As a child I used to love towing trailers a book! He and Brian have built up a whether it was behind my bike or the Mayfield 2 wheel garden tractor. Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. Every farm in the world is completely and utterly different to any other. Each farm’s land and location has various positives and negatives. The constraints farms have that limit productivity, efficiencies and ultimately profitability vary greatly. Those factors may be climate, soils, topography, distance to market or excess/deficient water. Perhaps more human influences affect your farm’s potential – a motorway splitting your farm in two, poor historical management, poor current management, pollution, lack of cash, substandard buildings. The list of possible limitations to a farming business are endless but also specific to each farm. My arable land has a lot going for it, but I am also aware of the constraints which hinder my competitiveness in what is a global market. When out working the land one such restriction that annoys me is the size of fields. Our fields are too small! We have 41 fields on the farm with an average of only 5.96ha (14.7 acres). Only two fields are larger than 10ha (24.7 acres) Ground prep work ahead of replanting forestry with 15 under 5ha (12.4 acres). Small and awkwardly shaped fields are massively detrimental to productivity and efficiencies. The output of modern, high-capacity machinery is seriously hampered when dealing with small land parcels. Probably about 15% of our land is headlands/ endrigs. These areas are often poorer yielding, require more inputs and cultivations and are horrifically time consuming. One 15ha field is considerably quicker to work than three 5ha fields. Staffing and time (two other major limitations) are far better utilised in larger fields than messing around in small areas. The farm is divided by drystone dykes. These were created when the land was enclosed and improved sometime between 1806 and 1860. Progressive farmers cleared the land of stones and, wasting nothing, used these to build field boundaries that would also act to contain livestock within a mixed cropping rotation. These, now, two-hundred-year-old dykes have come to define the local landscape and since the 1990’s become a protected feature. Any attempt to remove stone dykes without prior permission would result in a hefty penalty to your BPS payment. Unfortunately seeking permission to remove walls and amalgamate fields is practically Who’s checking who? impossible. One of our neighbours had the foresight to remove many, but not all of the dykes on his land when you were allowed. I now look at his large fields jealously as I dizzily spin round and round my wee fields. Unlike hedges, I question whether there are any environmental benefits to stone dykes as any biodiversity gains they may offer will probably be offset by the extra inputs and decreased yields of the headland crop. They are also a decaying landscape feature. Repairing and maintaining the miles of stone dykes is cost prohibitive and, in an arable situation, providing no practical advantages, are left to slowly weather, fall and crumble. It’s sad to see and frustrating to have current and future productivity hindered by a deteriorating structure. I am not for one minute advocating the removal of all dykes. They are a historical feature, a creation of skill and craft. A well preserved and maintained stone dyke is a work of art. There is also no need to remove all. Many mark land ownership boundaries, run alongside linear A dilapidated drystone dyke features such as roads or even mark a dividing line between distinct soil types that are best managed separately. Like old buildings some are worth preserving and others are better removed and the land better used. What I would like to do is remove several sections of dyke and amalgamate smaller fields to allow modern and efficient use of the land. I am pretty sure the progressive 19th century farmers who built the dykes would do the same if in my shoes. I would certainly be happy to plant a metre of hedge, or one tree, or repair one metre of dyke elsewhere on the farm for every metre of dyke I removed. This would allow both the improvement of landscapes and farm efficiencies. Ironically up at the hill farm I am subdividing large fields to better utilise grass through rotational grazing. I suppose landscapes constantly change over time…

The World Uncertainty Index is at near record levels and agriculture is far from immune from this. From policy uncertainty to environmental concerns, UK farmers are navigating a complex landscape as they look to secure their future. The recent Budget announcement around APR and BPR, the phasing out of the BPS and the sudden removal of SFI support in England, as well policy uncertainty north of the Border has only added to concerns about the viability of farming businesses. These concerns have been reinforced by the current Government’s apparent antipathy to the sector. With such uncertainty and around £17.5 billion of debt in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries it is crucial that farmers work with lenders that understand and are committed to agriculture for the long term.
