We spread crushed basalt rock on agricultural land, enriching soil health whilst locking away CO2 via enhanced rock weathering.

WHAT IS BASALT ROCK?

Basalt is a mineral-rich volcanic rock that has been applied as a top dressing for hundreds of years due to its benefits for soil fertility, soil biology, crop yield and health.

It is a locally sourced by-product of the aggregate industry which is screened to ensure it’s safe for agricultural use. Crushed basalt is suitable for all crops including pasture and has been approved for use in organic systems.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR FARMERS?

Our basalt is supplied and spread free of charge or heavily subsidised, using local contractors who know the roads and the land.

Basalt releases magnesium, calcium, potassium and other nutrients, reducing the need for fertilisers. Basalt can help raise and stabilise the pH of your soil, improving nutrient availability.

An initial trial with The University of Newcastle showed an increase in crop yield following the application of crushed basalt.

NO PROBLEM WITH MY BIG ENDS

It’s been a busy old month, I’ve pulled 8 sheds, four of which were on the same day. Two I can manage fine but then everything gets rather hot, my winch gearbox starts smoking and it all becomes worryingly overheated. Not that he cares, he can’t see beyond the £ notes I am earning for him. No concerns for my welfare, if I slow down out comes the whip and he threatens me if I dare to take a break. The only consolation to excessive heat are 40 litres of cold water that Bogdan kindly puts in containers every time I make the journey to East Lothian. This does cool me down somewhat just like a winning horse at the Grand National. Otherwise I feel fine, unlike her car, Myrtle, which is 13 years younger than me being a 1968 model. Her big ends have gone, Paul says they need polishing. Don’t you dare touch mine they are in good working order and I am very ticklish down there.

He seems to be spending an inordinate amount of time organizing a biking holiday in the Borders for him and his mates, he knows I can’t ride a bike so goes out of his way to arrange journeys that I am unable to join in the fun. Lunch there, drinks here and all in surprising places that I am not invited to. It is one thing earning the money, another thing how it is spent and on whom.

Next month is show season and I will be front and centre of stage – Boswells Show, The Border Union – wild horses won’t keep me away.

Silo2Block - 7 Layer Oxygen Barrier Silage Film

Oxygen barrier silage film works by creating a barrier between the silage and the outside air. This barrier prevents oxygen entering the silage, which can cause spoilage & reduce the nutritional value of the feed. The film is made from a special blend of materials that are impermeable to oxygen, such as polyethylene, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and nylon. The film is applied to the silage as tightly as possible, creating a seal that prevents air from entering. This helps to preserve the quality and nutritional value of the silage, making it more valuable feed for livestock. The application of SIlo2block all in one oxygen barrier film is faster and more efficient than traditional vacuum film and top sheet, especially applicable to multi-cut systems.

Average density of silage clamp = 750kg/m3

Average density of silage on top 1m = 600kg/m3

Value of 1m3 of top layer = £35 x 0.6 = £21/m3

Silo2Block reduces DM losses by 50% approx (no waste across the top 50cm of the clamp)

On Our Farm

June 7th 2023

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 14,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. What a difference a month makes. We have gone from too wet to too dry, an abundance of grass to not enough and good looking crops to very ugly ones.

Having looked really good all year, winter crops, especially wheat, now look awful. I have never seen so much brome before at Sandystones. In any normal year we may get the odd plant around telegraph poles and on field margins. However this year it is everywhere with big clumps in areas we have never seen it in before. Fields which have been min-tilled after oilseed rape are the worst but even the ploughed ones following a green manure are pretty dirty. Having spoken to my agronomist and consulted twitter it does appear that I am not the only one with this problem. The very mild autumn last year was the ideal conditions for not only crop establishment but also grassweeds. Fortunately our worst field is at the top of the track well away from any main roads. I can’t wait for harvest to get it cut as I hate having to look at it!

We cut silage last week and for the second year running conditions were perfect. Despite being a week earlier than 2022 yields were up and the organic fields were especially pleasing. A combination of chicken muck being applied earlier and a wet May has really helped. The grass that was stitched into the new lay last month has come away really well. We cut the field for silage to ensure the new grass gets plenty of sunlight and a N, P, K blend was spread immediately afterwards. Fingers crossed for some rain and a bumper second cut.

The first ever Sandystones pullets to be reared on the farm got transferred to Shed 1 last week. They have done really well and mortality has been exceptionally low. It has been a big learning curve and we have plenty to improve on but a massive thank you to Bruce for everything he has done. We certainly could not have done it without him. All they need to do now is lay plenty of eggs!

The past week we have been busy with farm visits. On Monday we had 15 pupils from a local primary school and yesterday we hosted 20 students from Texas who are on a two week study trip around Scotland. The school children got to mix their own ration for the cattle, met Dizzy the pet cow and learnt all about the hens. The Texan students were very interesting and I couldn’t get over the sheer size of their farming operations. A small holding is around 3000 acres. Most of them owned ranches and feedlots. One of the girls’ parents finished 65,000 Angus a year!

I hope to catch up with you at the Royal Highland Show in a couple of weeks’ time. It may have started raining by then (looks unlikely).

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically.

It is amazing how a spell of good, dry weather lifts the spirits and with the dry weather continuing the mowers are starting to appear in full force with a few early cuts already taken. We will hopefully get on next week with some of the fields, so a continued spell is needed but, dare I say it, a little bit of rain would also be welcome to help set the wholecrop seeds away. Knowing our luck, it’ll be a deluge just as we’ve finished mowing.

The warm weather over the half term has certainly made it an enjoyable week for the children but also added to the success of lots of local events. The County Show was well attended, Belsay Horse Trails had a glorious 4 days and most importantly on the event calendar, the Northumberland Young Farmers Rally, held at Fairnley Farm was a huge success. Moreso as Cambo Young Farmers won the competition. A great effort all round and we wish them luck for their regional events. The event calendar continues as the team are all away today at North Sheep being held at Bradford House Farm near Belsay. It’s the perfect time for a catch up, with lambing and calving mostly finished. We have finished lambing and scratching with Scabivax (we have managed to get enough doses eventually) but calving hasn’t quite finished with seven left to go, apart from the Galloways who were always set to calve later. I feel they need a little squeeze as the bull is set to go out in two weeks’ time!

We depleted one of the hen houses last week, which is always an event full of mixed emotions. Relief that you’ve managed to get through a flock without any major incidences, sadness that the hens are going, exhaustion from staying up all night to be on site whilst the catching team are present, weariness at the huge cleaning jobs in front of us for the next few weeks and positivity for the new pullets soon to arrive. This flock has been excellent, with consistent laying figures throughout, not too many floor eggs and the shell strength was still very good. The cleanout and wash down team are set to start next week, which typically will coincide with silage… next week will definitely be a busy one.

Black Sheep Farm Health were on farm a couple of weeks ago pelvic measuring the heifers. We weigh, condition score and assess their temperament at the same time. If they don’t meet the spec on any level, they will simply not be used for breeding. It has been a good month for sales with 15 bulling heifers away to a repeat customer, 30 steers away to a local farm for finishing and the final 35 fat cattle away to Dovecote Park next week. Empty sheds… just as well, as the silage pit is now empty!

Talking......North of the Forth June 5th 2023

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. How on earth have we ended up in June already? 2023 seems to be flying past at an alarming rate!

As expected, following the cold late spring, the crops are now accelerating through growth stages and May has been spent trying to hit spray timings and finish off nitrogen applications. Luckily we have decent sprayer capacity and spray most fungicides at 120 litres/ha meaning I can cover a lot of ground when conditions allow. Despite this I do seem to spend a huge amount of the growing season in my trusty Multidrive. With so much time in the cab you’d be forgiven for thinking I’d have lots of time to think and strategise. Unfortunately, despite the fraction of my brain used to drive, follow the tramlines, check for choked nozzles and avoid telegraph poles, my mind mostly goes into a strange neutral mode. It’s almost a zen-like state where difficult thoughts and applied thinking are replaced by, well, not very much. This is probably a good thing otherwise I may well be dwelling on the cost of the inputs I am applying versus the price of the crops I am trying to grow.

Oilseed and spring barley look full of potential at the moment, despite a late start. Wheat isn’t looking too exciting with less heads per square metre than I’d maybe like to see. I am hoping that the ability of wheat to compensate during grain fill will prove my worries wrong. East Coast Viners were sowing peas here on the 16th May with seedlings emerging quickly (much to the delight of the local woodpigeons). Forage rye will be harvested early next month but the crop looks a bit off last year’s bumper yield. For the past couple of years writing this column I have reported on the emergence of Patrick the Peacehill tortoise from his winter hibernation. I took his awakening to mark the start of spring proper as soil temperatures increased (26th May 2021 and 28th April 2022). Tortoises aren’t silly and will only appear when the winter is finally over. Sadly he didn’t appear this spring and was found dead in the middle of May. The Forster family are understandably upset to lose his gently lumbering presence from their garden.

Rather more happily the much-anticipated combine has finally arrived on farm. As you may recall this was first ordered in autumn 2021 but due to global supply issues wasn’t completed for harvest 2022. Claas were great and arranged a replacement combine for last harvest, however I am very glad to get my hands on our very own. Given the increase in the price of kit since this was purchased it is the first time a new bit of kit has appreciated in value before arriving on the farm. I am now booked into a course in how to get the best from the machine and am looking forward to a day at Claas UK HQ at Saxham. Hopefully the combine will do most of the thinking and I can drift off into my usual daydream state…

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.

Last autumn I was lamenting the lack of blackgrass in our stale seedbeds. Perversely, I like to see a smattering as we know we have killed some. My agronomist believed that as we have done such a good job over the years, we have none. The dry hot weather at flowering and in the autumn just meant it never grew. And now it has. 90% of the farm is pretty clean, but there are a couple of pieces we are walking with knapsacks to try and keep the seed return down. Interestingly after a period of spring cropping we do seem to have selected for spring germinating blackgrass, with 80+% being spring germinated. I am hoping I have found a friendly cow farmer who will take the blackgrass infested spring oats down at Worths Farm as silage. He is not willing to pay much but at least it will help offset some of our costs and tidy the field up. As I have now been relegated from sprayer-man, my new title is “mower-man”. This may be seen as a demotion, but I love it. I potter about listening to the cricket mowing the inside 3m of all our grass margins to reduce weed ingress into the fields. This sort of practise is discouraged under the CS options, but with the growing cost of herbicides putting grass margins automatically into CS is not a simple decision. Keeping on trend with our monthly trips away, this month it was London with the kids. When people ask what they would like for Christmas/birthdays we always ask for experiences, so they went skydiving at the O2 arena and on a tour round Twickenham. As a complete aside I do find it laughable that agriculture and farmers are being vilified from all directions for global warming when the amount of construction currently happening in London is frankly frightening. Given the paucity of Chinese restaurants in the Shires, we went to Chinatown for a real Chinese experience. The kids have always been told by us that when abroad, always eat where the locals eat. As we perused the vast array of restaurants we picked the one where the majority of clientele were Asian/of Asian descent. You know that feeling when it dawns on you that you might have bitten of more then you can chew? The specials described intestine soup, cold duck tongue and frog’s legs in chilli. Not a beef in black bean sauce to be seen. On finding the drinks at the back of the menu we found a very small slightly more Anglo-Chinese menu. The chicken with chilli and Szechuan pepper sounded good. With the heat of the kitchen already playing havoc with my thermostat, the waitress kindly suggested I had the “medium” version to which I readily agreed. My goodness me, it was like eating small cubes of fire. Sod broadening your horizons, next time it will be Pizza Express!

Talking......from the boundary June

In the past four years we have been on biking holidays to Transylvania in Romania, Zagori - Northern Greece and the Taurus Mountains in Southern Turkey. These trips are organised by The Slow Cyclist who specialise in out of the way places with interesting history, stunning scenery and very hospitable locals. Electric bikes make the effort of tackling hilly roads manageable for all levels of fitness. It is a perfect break of exercise, adventure and discovery.

We have been with the same core group of 10 friends. I have always been aware of just what a beautiful part of the world we live in with all the ingredients for a Slow Cyclist itinerary. Next week they are coming to stay for four days of biking, combined with entertainment at the Borders Book Festival held at Melrose in the evening. My only fear is the weather will break after a such a long dry spell. The Slow Cyclist was founded by Oli Broom who gave up his surveying job in London to bike to Australia. A passionate cricketer he left Lords Cricket Ground in October 2009 giving himself 13 months to watch the first ball of the Ashes series in Brisbane on 25 November 2010. His luggage consisted of a tent, pans, water and a cricket bat. Whichever capital city he was in, regardless of the time of year, he would find the cricket club. He played games in Belgrade, Budapest, Istanbul as well as more well known cricketing nations such as India. Oli wrote a book of his 14,000 mile adventure which I found compelling reading. When he arrived in Darwin he took the Stuart highway south but found the road trains a dangerous vehicle to contend with, so after 225 miles he headed East on the Roper highway which in places is a rutted dirt road. By amazing coincidence in 1971 I worked as a grease monkey lubricating dozers and graders building that road. We wondered then what the purpose of this road was, it appeared to go nowhere of significance. Due to the heat our working day started at 4 pm and finished at 2am, the canteen provided meals at 3pm and 3am. Our fellow workers were all escaping some problem in their lives – the Northern territory is a pretty lawless place! Oli Broom is speaking about his adventures at the Book Festival in Melrose on Thursday June 15th at 7.15pm. His story is one well worth hearing.

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing.

As the first winter storm runs up the island it is as good as anytime to look back on the past season.

It has been a pretty good harvest with solid yields of wheat and grass seed. The mustard and radish have gone well and we have sold all the crops at quite good money.

We also made good margins last spring on the 6000 lambs we finished. The dairy farm had a slow start to the milking season but has been ok since. We now have a cap on the amount of N fertiliser we can use to grow grass and that is limiting grass production and therefore the milk produced. However we will adjust to this.

The cows are now dried off and up at their winter holiday ground, the lambs behind electric fences and the autumn wheat is all in and mostly up.

So all in all, despite a few hiccups like burnt down houses, winter floods etc it has been a good year.

The outlook is less rosy, with grain, meat and milk prices coming back but costs such as diesel and fertiliser still too high and interest rates now up around 8%. The new season may well be challenging.

We did manage to escape down south for the opening of the duck hunting season. It was similar to the coronation that was on the same weekend: full of ceremony, entertainment and partying but with not a bird shot was highly unproductive.
