Luckily he did not follow her to Nairobi as we had two good jobs last month. First was an 80 mile round trip to David Stoddart’s farm near Penicuik where I pulled two sheds. David has concreted the bases of all his hen houses which makes my job a lot easier although I was pulling up hill in a wet field so I needed a hand to get myself out once the shed had been moved. The second house was much easier being smaller and a downhill pull. A week later I was at Town O’Rule pulling Nicola Brown’s shed into position, it was amazing how much the ground had dried up in a week and I was able to drive out unassisted. The diary looks particularly empty with nothing booked until March. At least that was the situation until an hour ago when he received two calls - one for a bogged tractor at Manorhill, near Kelso and another to pull three ash trees that are leaning over the road and need felling near the A7 between Him a hockey player? Somehow I think not Selkirk and Hawick. So he had better hurry up, I can’t wait to get going. Although I have had a quiet Christmas, it certainly was not like that around here. The young uns had a serious party on the 30th in the steading, there were cars parked all round me, blocking me in. It was lucky for them I did not have an emergency call out that night. On Our Farm

January 10th 2024 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. December turned into a very eventful month and not always for the right reasons. At the end of November we moved one of our hen houses. We move three to four a year and over the years have got it down to quite a slick operation. The winter is never the best time to move a shed although we have done it in the snow, hard frosts and rain before. However, never have I experienced such terrible ground conditions. Despite installing new drains last year they were at capacity and the whole site was a quagmire - even Wendy had to be towed in and out! In such bad conditions the whole process takes twice as long and all the machinery creates a horrendous mess. Thankfully the high winds in mid-December dried the site out enough for us to get a digger in to level out the ruts we had made. Bogdan and I alternate working over Christmas and this year was his time to be off. With both Bogdan and Diana back in Romania for three weeks Yurii and I were going to be kept busy collecting eggs, feeding cattle, rearing pullets and running the treehouse. Two days after Bogdan and Diana had left Yurii called to say his baby had been taken by ambulance to hospital with suspected meningitis. It turned out that the baby had covid which Yurii and his wife then caught. So for the next week I had nobody to help. A massive thank you to Jess and my parents, especially to the old man, for all their help as it was the week before Christmas! The new Agrimart hats are proving very popular Christmas and New Year were action packed and fantastic fun. Both my sisters with everyone at Sandystones. Photo credits to Jess and their families came up and Jess’s family joined us for New Year. There was a family rough shoot, trip to the pantomime, children’s meet, family hockey match, a walk up the Eildon’s and a joint 40th birthday party for Jess and I. The theme for the party was ‘Après Ski’ and we had 90 people for dinner and dancing in one the barns. I regretted the sour skittle vodka shot ski races and the beer the following morning when feeding the cattle, however I would do it all over again as it was a cracking party. Hopefully we will get some better weather soon as I am getting pretty desperate to spread muck. The wet autumn prevented us from emptying the muck barn fully in October and combined with larger cattle numbers this year we have produced a lot. There appears to be a weather window next week. Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. As I write this, we appear to be finally having a day or two without rain. I suspect we’ve said this before, and I also suspect it’s the same for most, but we’ve never seen the farm as wet, for as long a period, as it is now. We aren’t sitting under two foot of water like some poor souls, however, everywhere is completely saturated. Travelling to check stock is an ordeal; fuel use, wear and tear on bikes, morale, stock condition etc are all taking a beating. All the rain seems to have fallen during the last six months and December’s weather has just finished 2023 off in a deluge. John, who now works with us in the hens, has been measuring the local rainfall and he has record 47 inches of rain in Scots Gap. Normally, annual rainfall is in the low 30’s here. We are making slow headway on our new stewardship and are trying to finalise the details and make sure the agreement is workable. We have also just submitted our SFI agreement for the areas of land not covered by the Higher Tier. With Steve Barclay’s announcement last week, it looks like managing the land for environmental benefit is finally being taken seriously. Traditionally options where farmers create habitat have always paid more than options where we maintain habitat. This has always been a personal gripe, as its almost as if we’re being penalised for doing the right thing. Well, that has all changed and the announcement detailing the uplift in payments has increased the maintenance payments to where they need to be. This is very welcome. Collectively, we now need to spend the agricultural budget to ensure it doesn’t get under used and then unallocated in future years. As part of our agreement, we have secured capital works payments for roofs over the silage pits and muck heaps. The funding is meant to cover 100% of the costs, but the reality is, it won’t. We’re busy getting quotes for the works, but also investing time into preparing cash flows to analyse where the sticky points will come, as like most grant schemes, we’ll need to pay for the works up front, then apply and recover the funds. This week Black Sheep Farm Health Vets have utilised our meeting room and on farm facilities to host a meeting of vet graduates for a Sheep Vet Training Day. Their topics of discussion are all things sheep, including genetic selection, effective parasite control and management, grazing management, scanning, management of the Ewe etc – they could be here some time! One element up for discussion is Bluetongue. At present we are fortunate with our location, however it is clear, that over the coming year it is something we need to be aware of and look out for as it is possible it will make its way north. Weather patterns and the movement of midges is hard to predict. We clearly need to protect our geographical advantage as best we can. Like all diseases, the guidance is to not purchase from high risk areas, especially Holland, pre and post movement test and to be very vigilant. Apparently, the signs include crusty noses and lameness, as well as the more noticeable swollen head and tongue. 42

After a hectic Christmas and New Year with a houseful of children and grandchildren staying and a continuous supply of feeding for the ever-hungry hordes, last weekend was much quieter and time was spent recharging the batteries. Philly and I both read our digital versions of the Sunday paper, it is the first time for ages that I have read the paper in detail. I couldn’t believe the number of pages taken up with transgender issues whether it be in education, the NHS, the civil service or just everyday life. I don’t know how many more letters of the alphabet can be added to LGBTQ+ to describe a person’s sexual orientation but for people of my generation it is hard to keep up with the definitions and understand what they all stand for! Trans activists are a determined force to make life ‘interesting’ for those in the public eye who do not conform to their views. One has to admire Guy Lee those who are principled and stand up to the abuse they are subjected to. Henry Cheape was featured briefly in the last issue of Agrimart as he rows solo across the Atlantic. He set off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on December 13th, as of today, January 10th, he has rowed 1426 nautical miles leaving 1226 to the finish in Antigua. He is lying 5th of 11 in the solo class and 26th of 38 overall. He posts interesting daily updates on his Instagram page pollyanne_atlantic23. The app called YB races shows the position of all the boats and if you like statistics gives a lot of information. Yesterday Henry posted an underwater video of himself cleaning the hull of his boat. Henry farms at Strathtyrum outside St Andrews producing much of the produce for his farm shop at Balgrove Larder. He should reach the finish in the middle of February, I can only admire him for this incredible achievement and the money he is raising for 3 charities. Global Canopy, Sustain and Nomad Conservation. It is definitely something I would hate to do! For the followers of Ian Mackenzie, our correspondent from New Zealand, I am afraid you will be disappointed. No article has been forthcoming as he says he has been out of signal?! January 8th 2024 Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Ah, the weather. I am a bit of a stats nerd, and love to find patterns to try and explain any phenomena. The Howes as a family love recording the weather, my grandfather did, dad did and now so do I. In the last couple of years I have invested in a fancy rain gauge which is normally out of range, or needs cleaning or is just having a fit. I am tired of listening to farmers moaning about their land “never looking so wet” yet just accepting it. The Environment Agency has failed in its responsibilities, but so too have farmers. For too long the BPS/SFP were seen as profit whilst neglecting the most important investments a fen farm can make. Blue pipe and gravel. What is worrying is how much water is stood on fields locally when we haven’t had that much rain. It doesn’t want to reach the top! We are 120% of average (600mm/yr), and I believe the 120mm we got in July was the issue. That led to wet ground conditions at harvest and the following cultivations were done whilst the soil was in a plasticine state which led to smearing as opposed to fracturing the soil. If you add a wet year’s rainfall to the preceding year you typically get close to the 30yr rainfall average. For example if you add 718mm in 2023 and 504mm in 2022 the average is 611mm. Or 2012 (812mm) and 2011 (373mm) the average is 592mm. 2018 and 2019 (533mm & 786mm) slightly buck the trend with an average of 659mm, but that is only 10% over. So what does this all mean? God knows. A recent skiing holiday did suggest that weather patterns are changing as the resorts always seem short of snow and working windows seem to be getting ever tighter and flooding seems more widespread. Our weather does seem to swing from extremes more than I even remember growing up. Having reflected on the time sheets of the subsoiler operator, I have decided to double our subsoiling capacity. Trying to cover over 700ha of subsoiling with a 3.6m machine was always optimistic so I have been out and bought a slightly smaller second machine which will How I like my water in the winter work behind the sprayer tractor. Having spent over £500k on four pieces of equipment in the last 18 months it is hard to explain how I got far more satisfaction from spending 2% of that sum on a used subsoiler than I did from any of the new shiny machines. Scouring the web resulted in a trip down to Essex where I selected a frame from one machine, and a packer from another to make what I want. A lot of ratchet straps secured it to the car trailer and we were off! Not the most aerodynamic load I have towed! All I need now is to convert it to the legs I like and we will be ready to go (when it ever dries up!). 56

On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. A Happy New Year? To be honest I’d settle for a dry one (and I don’t mean in the alcohol sense). 2023 will live long in the memory of farmers in this area for the sheer volume of rain we have endured. With England now also facing devastating flooding the spring barley area is bound to be huge as winter crops are wiped out and I Pigs keeping warm and dry inside don’t want to be growing any more than strictly necessary. Growers lifting winter vegetables deserve a medal for their valiant efforts. Sprout, carrot, parsnip, cabbage and neep harvest goes on no matter what to meet supermarket orders and I cannot imagine how difficult it has been for these guys this winter. I hate writing about weather because there should be more interesting things to talk about but the severity and long-term effects of 2023 cannot be ignored. In other news… turkeys season was successfully concluded with processing, packing, collections and deliveries all going smoothly. The only minor disaster occurred when my wife lost her phone. Susannah is basically in charge of all operations in the final weeks of turkey season, arranging logistics and dealing with customers so losing her phone was a big deal. The whole family was involved in the search but sadly to no avail. Our daughter suggested we look on CCTV to see if there were any clues. In a last ditch, no hope effort we reviewed the last few hours. As we watched, Susannah was seen helping a customer out to her car with a large turkey. Chatting away happily with the lady whilst opening the door and placing the order inside the vehicle, Susannah is seen absentmindedly placing her phone down on the roof of the car. Sadly, it remained on the roof as it was seen trundling out of the farmyard and disappearing into the distance. If anyone finds an i-Phone on the northbound A90 carriageway, please don’t tell me as its expensive replacement is already here. January is a short and busy month with plenty of jobs and meetings to fill up the shiny new diary. All the best for 2024.
