The JENESYS program has been a transformative experience, offering a golden opportunity to immerse myself in Japan’s technology and cultural heritage. I am deeply grateful to AFS for organizing this remarkable exchange program

The program seamlessly combined cultural exploration with technological insights. I visited landmarks such as the serene Miyajima Shrine, the historic Kiyomizu Temple, the stunning Kinkaku-ji Temple, and the dazzling Himeji Castle Engaging in traditional activities like playing the Tsuzumi (a Japanese hand drum) and practicing Aikido, a modern martial art, gave me a deeper appreciation of Japan’s rich cultural traditions.

On the technological front, I was thrilled to visit Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer, and attend lectures at the University of Hyogo. Visiting the University of Tokyo introduced me to Japan’s dynamic research and work culture. It motivated me to consider pursuing higher studies and a career in this innovative country.

Another highlight was our visit to the Embassy of India in Tokyo, where we learned about the strategic geopolitical relations between India and Japan. This insight broadened my understanding of international cooperation.

Though brief, this journey was profoundly enriching. Experiencing Japan’s culture, technology, and hospitality expanded my perspective and instilled a sense of global citizenship in me. This program also helped me become more extroverted, hone my communication skills, and pick up basics of Japanese. Building friendships with Indian and Japanese peers added a personal touch to this life-changing experience. I return from Japan more confident, openminded, and motivated to address challenges globally. This program has opened a world of possibilities for me, and I am honored to call myself a global citizen.

When I first heard I was selected for this program, I felt incredibly happy and excited. It was my first time traveling outside India and also my first flight experience, which made it even more special. I had no specific expectations about how it would be, and perhaps that’s why every single moment felt like a new and unique experience for me. Our journey began in Hiroshima, and as we traveled by bus, I was amazed. I couldn’t believe I was seeing the city we had studied in our social textbooks. It looked stunning, like a city beautifully dressed up for a celebration I initially tried capturing all the beauty of Japan on my phone but soon realized it was impossible. So, I put my phone away and soaked in the scenery with my eyes, treasuring those moments in my heart.

This program helped me discover myself in ways I didn’t expect I learned how to make friends, and I’m grateful for the meaningful relationships I formed. Visiting places like Japan’s serene temples brought a sense of peace and fulfillment. Witnessing their technological advancements, such as the supercomputer, and visiting the University of Tokyo was nothing short of a dream come true

I was deeply inspired by Japan’s punctuality, discipline, and respect for traditions. These values left a lasting impression on me. This program not only enriched my knowledge but also shaped me as a person

I’ve returned to India with countless memories, valuable experiences, and a renewed perspective on life. This journey has been one of self-discovery, inspiration, and personal growth an experience I will treasure forever

I finally had the opportunity to visit Japan, and despite knowing little about its culture, I was excited for the cultural exchange. Our group of 24 landed in Japan, and we were fortunate to witness the sunrise soon after arriving.

We took another flight to Hiroshima and then a bus from the airport to the Rihga Royal Hotel. I realized that all the things I had heard about Japan the clean roads, strict adherence to traffic rules, and overall discipline were true. The roads were spotless, and throughout the entire trip, I couldn’t find a single plastic wrapper anywhere. People waited patiently at red lights, even when there were no vehicles in sight.

When we reached our hotel, I was amazed by the room’s view of Hiroshima city. Over the next two days, we explored the streets, witnessing the incredible advancement in technology and infrastructure. Beneath Hiroshima lies an entire city in the form of subways. It was inspiring to witness how a city that had been completely destroyed just 70 years ago had rebuilt itself to such heights.

We also visited cities like Nara, Himeji, Kyoto, and Tokyo, where everything seemed pristine and high-end, with premium cars commonly on the streets. The people we met were cheerful, kind, and humble qualities that deeply inspired me I felt that I should learn from their way of living and incorporate some of their practices into my own life.

The temples and shrines we explored showcased Japan’s rich cultural heritage. We also had the opportunity to learn Japanese martial arts and traditional arts like Noh drama

The eight days were filled with joy and incredible memories. I had made great friends and shared unforgettable experiences. Japan left me with a deep sense of admiration for its culture, technology, and people, and I will always cherish this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I was introduced to Japan through two major things: devastating atomic explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and cartoons like Doraemon and Shin Chan. Thereafter visiting Japan to witness these things in person was budding within me The JENESYS program then granted me a weeklong Japan voyage. As an Indian ambassador of JENESYS 2024, the whole journey was full of excitement, and knowledge enriched that gave me an incredible opportunity to connect with people for learning and personal growth. The whole journey was shuttling between experiencing ancient Japan through temples and shrines to technologically advanced Shinkansen and Fugaku supercomputer at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science. Exploring cuisine, and meeting polite locals strengthened my appreciation for Japanese culture. Each cultural heritage I visited reminded me that exchange was not new between India and Japan Rather, it dates back to the 6th century when Buddhism was introduced to Japan, the 1st cultural exchange between India and Japan. As a result, Japanese culture was highly resonating with Indian culture. The Aikido and Kotsuzumi Workshop was a lifetime experience to learn Japanese traditional musical instruments used in noh drama and Japanese martial arts. The highlight of the visit was having an interactive session with the Indian ambassador in Japan and meeting with MOFA Japan officials to discuss future action plans to strengthen India-Japan friendship

Reflecting on my journey through JENESYS 2024, it feels nearly impossible to distill such an enriching and transformative experience into mere words. This program was a vivid tapestry of culture, innovation, and inspiration, leaving an indelible mark on my perspective

The first and most striking aspect was the immersion into Japanese culture and ethics. The value placed on time was truly eye-opening punctuality isn’t just a habit in Japan; it is a way of life that fosters discipline and respect

Witnessing AFS Japan members and volunteers unfailingly adhere to schedules, neither a moment early nor late, was a profound lesson in valuing every second. Equally impactful was their deep-rooted gratitude and kindness. Every act, no matter how small, was met with heartfelt appreciation, a value I observed consistently during my interactions

Another unforgettable highlight was experiencing Japan’s technological prowess. Visiting the “Fugaku” supercomputer facility in Kobe, the fourth fastest in the world, was awe-inspiring it felt like standing at the frontier of human innovation. Similarly, Japan’s advanced architecture and infrastructure left me speechless. Walking through Hiroshima, a city once devastated by an atomic bomb, I witnessed its miraculous transformation into a thriving modern hub, a testament to resilience and determination. Riding the Shinkansen, or bullet train, was another thrilling experience, akin to flying on rails.

This program not only expanded my horizons but also instilled a deep appreciation for discipline, gratitude, and innovation. I am profoundly grateful to AFS India, AFS Japan, and MOFA Japan for this life-changing opportunity, which has left me with invaluable insights and lifelong memories.

During my journey, I learned a lot about Japanese culture, people, society, and technology. We saw their high architectural beauty in Osaka and Himeji Castle, which was really inspiring.

During my first visit to Japan, I never ate Japanese food and I never used chopsticks. But this time, through JENESYS, I came as a group and, seeing other people eating with chopsticks, I also started learning. Now I am very good at using chopsticks, and I can now eat Japanese food Food has the power to connect people. If we can exchange food, we can exchange our culture. This is the purpose of JENESYS. My fragile memory may sometimes unsettle to the provocation of forgetfulness, but what my eyes have witnessed, my hands have touched, my heart has embraced and my soul has realized, are not mere ripples of the past They are my invaluable possessions that I bear myself with. They are worthy of transporting me beyond the ordinary. And so, for as long as time spells permission, I will recall this journey; how the places and people that were once new to me became familiar. I will stand once more on the brink of the world, gazing at another moon. And in that moment, I will know, as I still do, that these experiences, woven into my being, have transformed me. Traveling through Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo gave me profound insights. Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park deeply moved me Kyoto’s ancient temples brought serenity. Nara’s deer in the park reminded me of the sacred bond between humans and nature. Tokyo, a mix of innovation and tradition, inspired creativity and selfreflection. This journey changed my perspective on life, dreams, and possibility It taught me that no dream is too big if you dare to pursue it. Every step counts, and if you can dream it, you can achieve it.

Leaving my village, I touched the skies and crossed oceans. All it takes is one step no matter how small.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE EXCHANGE A

I’m Soumadipta Das, and I’ve been studying Japanese for two years while working as an IT Operations Associate at Accenture. My introduction to the JENESYS program came through my Japanese language school, Indo Japan Language Studies Society, and I was thrilled when I was selected The idea of visiting Japan and immersing myself in its culture felt like a distant dream until AFS made it possible.

On November 11, 2024, I arrived in Japan, full of excitement but also a bit nervous I wondered if my Japanese language skills would be enough for the 8-day program. Thankfully, traveling with friends from India helped ease my worries, and the program itself was so wellorganized that I never felt out of place. I quickly found myself immersed in Japan’s deep cultural traditions, and before I knew it, I felt completely at home.

I had the chance to explore some incredible places Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Tokyo each with its own historical and cultural significance. Visiting these cities, meeting local people, and trying traditional food with chopsticks were experiences I’ll never forget The program also allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, which was both inspiring and eye-opening.

As the program came to an end, I felt a bittersweet mix of emotions While I was sad to leave, I knew that I’d carry the lessons and experiences with me. Since returning to India, I’ve felt calmer, more focused, and more dedicated to my work. Thanks to AFS, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: MOFA, The Japan Embassy and AFS Japan for their constant support in promoting intercultural exchange programs. Over the years, we have been able to create numerous opportunities for students, Youths and volunteers to experience each other's cultures, values, and ways of life, thanks to your unwavering commitment to this cause.

We would also like to thank all the Coordinators from IIT Hyderabad, IIIT DM Jabalpur and other institutions from different regions of India for their support in promoting the Program and helping us recruiting the participants.

We hope that this partnership between AFS India and AFS Japan continues to flourish and that we can continue to work together towards our shared goal of promoting peace and understanding among nations.

Thank you on behalf of the AFS India Team.
