CONNECTING THE WORLD

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program is an innovative high school exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This public diplomacy initiative builds bridges of international understanding, especially between Americans and people in countries with significant religious minorities populations. The program offers scholarships to high school students from these countries to spend an academic year in the United States, where they live with a host family, attend a U.S. high school, and engage in various cultural exchange activities.

The YES Program aims to promote cultural exchange, build leadership skills, and strengthen the ties between the U.S. and participating countries. By experiencing life in America firsthand, students develop a deeper understanding of U.S. society, values, and people, while also sharing their own cultures with Americans.

Since its inception, the YES Program has provided thousands of students with the opportunity to experience American life, gain new perspectives, and become global citizens committed to bridging cultural divides.

Participating in the exchange program has profoundly shaped my life, leaving me with cherished memories and lasting friendships. The experience of giving a presentation about my home country, India, was a highlight, allowing me to share my culture and learn from others. Fun adventures like visiting Mt. Olympus water park with other exchange students brought us closer together, and my graduation was a milestone I celebrated with my host family, who had become like my own.

This exchange program has broadened my horizons, deepened my understanding of different cultures, and created bonds that will last a lifetime.

This exchange year has been incredible. I'm grateful for my amazing host family, welcoming community, and wonderful school. I've made many friends and had supportive teachers and coaches who encouraged me to try new things, like skiing and improving my communication skills. My physics teacher sparked my love for the subject. I've visited new places, learned about different cultures, and shared my own. A special highlight was attending CEW in Washington, DC. None of this would have been possible without my parents, my host family, KL–YES, AFS, and my placement organization, PAX.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to embark on this exchange year journey. It has been a transformative experience filled with eventful activities and unforgettable memories. From delivering speeches to acting in drama, community service, presentations, soccer matches, debates, and cross country races, each activity has shaped me in profound ways. Through these experiences, I've grown not only academically but also personally, by making everlasting friendships, polishing skills, and learning new ones. Thank you for this incredible opportunity, AFS India; it has truly been a year of growth, learning, and fond relationships.

APURVA PATHAK

This year has positively transformed my worldview, making me more confident, openminded, and respectful. The YES exchange program allowed me to explore a diverse community in Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan. Celebrating festivals like Rakshabandhan, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Diwali with family and friends was enriching. Volunteering over 115 hours and engaging in fun learning and extracurriculars at Pioneer High School was fulfilling. Visiting landmarks such as the United Nations headquarters in New York and Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, turned my dreams into reality, providing experiences pivotal to my future.

BALIGA HASINI

Dr. Br Ambedkar IIT Medical Academy

Host School: Plano west Senior high school, Plano Dallas, Tx

My journey was like a roller coaster ride, but with more ups than downs. I was hosted in one of the biggest cities in Texas, US. I had a beautiful host mother who taught me everything from beginning to end. She supported and guided me in every step I took. We had a cute dog with whom I fell in love. I attended the biggest school in Plano, where I made my friends who made my journey unforgettable. I visited New York, an experience I will never forget, and went on a road trip too. Despite facing homesickness, jet lag, food adjustments, and meeting new people, I overcame them with courage and selfmotivation.

CHAYANIKA BARUAH

The past 10 months were a dream come true. I was blessed with an amazing host family who opened their home to me and accepted me as part of their family. I often say I now have two sets of parents, one in India and one here in the United States. My host parents and little siblings were the sweetest, and I love them with all my heart. I was placed in Tillamook, Oregon, famously known for its cheese. I attended Tillamook High School and met so many cool people there. This exchange opportunity was the best thing that happened to me; it helped me grow and transformed me for the better. Thank you, AFS, for this golden opportunity!

The exchange changed my perspective on the world. I learned to be confident and speak up for myself. The most memorable moments were spent with my host dad. I love my host dad; he never treated me like an exchange student, and I am glad to have him as my dad.

I had the chance to travel to different places like Disney World in Florida, go ice skating in Colorado, and have many different experiences. I am so glad to have joined this program. Thank you, YES.

My exchange year was a rollercoaster ride. I stayed with my host mother, Jackie, and her dog, Bowie, in Boston, attending Meridian Academy as a sophomore. My host family and teachers were incredibly supportive and loving.

We took road trips to Milwaukee, New York, and Georgia, celebrating Christmas, skiing, bowling, and enjoying movies together. At school, I learned Spanish, ceramics, drumming, and attended MUN conferences. I discovered my talent for sketching and deepened my love for poetry. Making friends from around the world greatly impacted me. This year made me more confident and loved. I’m grateful to everyone involved. Thank you!

My exchange year was amazing, filled with memories and success. Some of my best experiences included ice skating, skiing, winning a volleyball regional championship, giving a saree to my host mom, and attending FC Cincinnati soccer games and Reds baseball games. My host family and friends were the reason for my happiness; without their encouragement and support, I wouldn’t have reached this stage. Their emotional support from the day I landed in Cincinnati to my return to India meant everything to me.

Thank you, AFS and the YES program, for this wonderful opportunity and once-in-alifetime experiences.

FAIZ ANJUM

Syed Abid Husain Sr. Sec. School

Host School: Woodland Park High School

As the YES Program 2023-24 completed, I am constantly reminded of the experiences I had and cherished throughout the year. Out of all the amazing memories, one stood out: in early May, a geomagnetic storm revealed the Aurora Borealis across North America. Around midnight, while I was sitting at my desk, my host brother hurriedly took me outside to our porch to see the sky. Initially, I thought we were stargazing, but his urgency suggested something more. We turned off the lights and soon saw the faint greenish-purple hues of the Northern Lights. Witnessing this rare phenomenon, which had long been on my bucket list, was a serene and unforgettable moment.

HARSH YADAV

VidyaGyan School, Bulandshahr

Host School: Puyallup High School

This exchange year has been a life-changer for me. I feel like a completely new person, having gained many perspectives. It’s amazing to view the world through multiple lenses simultaneously. I discovered a beautiful part of the USA’s culture. The exploration wasn’t limited to culture but spread over many domains. Joining the business club, participating in multiple business conferences, and making it to the national competition were both overwhelming and exciting. Additionally, my time with the debate team was enriching, teaching me to express ideas in various ways. Touring Washington State and taking trips to Oregon and Florida made my exchange year truly special.

NITISH KUMAR

This exchange year was one of the most wonderful, life-changing experiences I’ve had.

Arriving in a new country brought a mix of excitement and nervousness. I made diverse friends among the locals and other exchange students, found a home away from home, and gained a second family who loved me. I cherished all the fond memories, whether it was the fun cooking sessions with my host mom, where we barely managed to save a dish, or the new custom with my host dad of dipping our heads in every new body of water we visited, regardless of the weather. These moments were everything I could have asked for.

The YES program had a significant impact on my life. I never imagined coming to the USA, staying for months, studying through the academic year, and graduating. YES gave me the chance to build confidence, be brave, and stay in the USA for 10 months away from my parents. It helped me improve skills like adaptability, time management, finance management, and understanding American culture. I’m grateful for my loving, caring, and protective host family. The community, church, and school I was part of were special, offering much love and care. I made lifelong friends, and the best part was my graduation. Although I was sad to leave my school friends, I’m glad to have made such beautiful friends who don’t want to lose me. Thank you, YES, for this life-changing opportunity.

Through the YES program, I embraced diverse cultures and American high school life. I am grateful for the chance to explore new cultures, expand my comfort zone, build friendships, and create connections beyond borders. My year included unique experiences, like seeing snow for the first time and celebrating a US holiday.

Overcoming initial shyness at soccer practice, I made friends and joined the varsity team. I also tried various sports, with Ultimate Frisbee becoming a favorite. My exchange year felt like a vacation and was the best time of my life. I had the kindest and most loving host family ever. In America, I found a place where I felt at home, welcomed, and loved. My favorite people are my host family and my sports team. My favorite memories are going on vacation with my host family to New York, Boston, and other fun trips like beaches, going out to eat, and spending time with each other. I enjoyed participating in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track with my amazing coaches, who provided immense support and love. This exchange was the best decision of my life and truly changed me. I LOVE IT HERE IN AMERICA.

TANAY AMRUT PATEL

Pragnya Bodhini High School

Host School: Emporia High School, Kansas

My unforgettable exchange year was thrilling and full of learning. It began with emotions I had never expected but eventually became skillful and effective in my life. The highlight was after the first semester, when I was cast for a show and managing basketball brought me closer to my friends. I also spent more time with my beloved grandparents, visiting their house often. A special memory was fishing with my brother from Egypt and my grandfather on a sunny, windy day at a lake. Despite a slow start, a competition began between my brother and me. Sadly, he won by catching seven fish in 20 minutes, while I caught four, including a 13-inch catfish. Packing my year into two suitcases was daunting yet rewarding. Despite some challenges, this year was worthwhile and fun.

VEDSHRI DEEPAK THAPA

Loknete Shankarrao Balaji Waje Vidyalaya

Host School: Skowhegan Area High School

I had a wonderful time in the US, which impacted me in many ways. I saw personal growth; I became more confident, mature, and gained a broader perspective. This helped in everything I did and every decision I made. I learned about a culture very different from mine, allowing me to think outside the box and innovate. I became more realistic and unafraid to express my opinions. I now have a great second family forever. Their kindness inspired me to show the same to others. I also learned new sports. My painting displayed at the Portland Museum of Art and winning the best dancer medal boosted my self-confidence. The experience in the US was incomparable to what I could have had in India. I highly recommend this program.

Applying for an exchange program turned out to be the best decision I ever made. The unique experience of being abroad enriched and developed me as an individual and benefited my community. I believe every small step taken today leads to big success tomorrow. That’s how I started my journey. Now I can proudly affirm that the small steps I took have led me to the path of success I’m on. Cooking Indian foods, teaching dances, tasting American cuisine, and learning about a new culture added fun to my exchange year. I deeply thank my host family for their hospitality and open hearts. I am grateful to the Almighty God, AFS India, the YES program, PAX, my family, friends, school, and the US Department for their support throughout this remarkable journey.

I faced many challenges during my exchange year but never lost hope. I consistently sought positive vibes and became my own guiding light. Today, with pride and tears, I reflect on how my struggles paid off. I returned home with a successful completion of my exchange year. I worked hard at school and was awarded "Student of the Month" twice, an achievement rare for foreign exchange students. I also received the "Student of the Year" award. I joined FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and won two regional medals. My U.S. high school teachers were my backbone, and I earned an "International Education Week" participation award from the U.S. Councils for presenting about my country to build understanding and relationships. I am grateful for all the lessons learned.

My exchange year was loaded with unforgettable experiences and memorable people. This exchange year helped me a lot in learning about American culture and the political system. It also taught me the value of the people around you and the bonds you make with them. Making friends from around the world, valuing and respecting each other's cultures, and staying in touch with them helped me become a global citizen. Involvement in social and volunteer activities has made me a more confident and independent individual. These skills will help me in whatever profession I choose in the future. I truly think I've become a better version of myself than I once aspired to be.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, American Council, The US Embassy New Delhi, American Centre, US Consulate Mumbai, US Consulate Hyderabad, US Consulate Chennai, US Consulate Kolkata, and AFS USA for their constant support in promoting intercultural exchange programs.
