Implementing SDGs in Everyday Life In the fast-moving world, we are so inundated with responsibili es in our personal and professional lives that we don't think of the world around us.

Take a minute and think of your contribu on to make the world a be er place? Did you think of something? Did it create an impact? Did your ac on change a life if not lives? Did your ini a ve create a be er world for a be er tomorrow?

If you feel that your answer is on the less favorable side, it's me for you to think of the world that surrounds you, provides for you and that will provide for the genera ons to come. Earth is 4.51 billion years old and it's ageing -much quicker than before. The resources are being replenished and exhausted. We need change makers who can not only think but also work towards crea ng a be er world -- a sustainable world.

While we are engaged in our lives, there are many others who take out me to be the change they want to see in the world. These change makers, with their ideas and innova ons, are changing the world by working on the goals to create a be er tomorrow -- a tomorrow that will be appreciated by others and will exist for others.

At AFS, we encourage change-making ac vi es. Our volunteers and alumni are engaged in various ac vi es to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as Global Goals, that are 'a universal call to ac on to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity'. The aim of the volunteers is to do their bit in crea ng a real change by crea ng and engaging in ini a ves and projects to achieve a sustainable future for all. They have done ac vi es such as Clothes Distribu on for the Needy & Underprivileged (Goal 1 - No Poverty); Khichdi Distribu on Program (Goal 2 - Zero Hunger); Menstrual Health Hygiene Awareness Camp (Goal 3 - Good Health and Well-Being); Educa on | Serving the Underserved (Goal 4- Quality Educa on); Empowering Transgender Community (Goal 5 - Gender Equality and Goal 10 - Reducing Inequali es); Wall Pain ng (Goal 6 - Clean Water & Sanita on); Environmental Advocates | Reduce, Reuse & Recycle (Goal 12 - Responsible Produc on and Consump on and Goal 13 - Climate Change); Beach Cleanliness (Goal 14 Life Below Water); Tree Planta on (Goal 15 - Life on Land); Peace Educa on Workshop & Webinars (Goal 16 - Peace, Jus ce and Strong Ins tu ons) and much more. These are just few examples of the projects and ini a ves started by AFS volunteers, alumni and exchange students during their me in India.

In today's world, we are in an urgent need of change makers who are ready to address the global challenges that we're facing in the 21st century. We need people who are ready to bring innova on to ďŹ x the challenges in the ďŹ eld related to poverty, environment, inequality, climate etc. AFS encourages individual or group contribu on by empowering the AFSers with right tools, resources and training, it also creates pla orms where various stakeholders can come together to contribute to achieving the Global Goals. In the past, AFS India has developed partnerships with many like-minded organiza ons who are working towards the same goals of crea ng a be er sustainable tomorrow.

We create Global Ci zens, change making process is a big part of the same. If you want to be the change and have an idea that will make our world a be er place, act now. Share with others. Partner with a friend or an organiza on.

Reach out to organiza ons who are already working on the cause. The idea is to -- Think Globally, Act Locally! Your mantra for your change-making process should be: Ideate, Innovate and Implement.

Intercultural Learning | Educa on AFS India Member Schools Meeting | Connect, Collaborate & Co-create

#interculturallearning The Principal Meet was held on 13th April 2019 in New Delhi. With the theme Connect, Collaborate & Co-create, 28 Principals from the five different regions- North, South, East, West and Central regions of schools from all over India a ended the meet.

The meet featured sessions, discussion, ice-breaking session to plan the Business Model that will help us in advancing our 3 impact goals: develop ac ve global ci zens, globalize schools & ins tu ons and expand access to intercultural educa on.

The meet entailed the tes monial sec on, in which 4 Principals par cipated with the mandate to empower and have experience sharing with AFS and its programs. They talked on the theme of: l l l l

With the day passing, some engrossing sessions with interes ng ac vi es were introduced to the par cipants. The sessions were as follows: l AFS and Our Educa onal Goals: Sarita Badhwar facilitated this session where her focus was on the 16 Educa onal Goals. She described how the AFS Educa onal Goals are the backbone of the AFS Student Learning Journey & Curriculum.

The objec ve of the session was the help the Principals understand how AFS Student Learning Journey & Curriculum supports students before, during and a er their me abroad through group orienta on sessions. The facilitator also shared about the innova ve curriculum provided by AFS uses a variety of proven experien al learning formats and resources to engage students, help them process their everyday experiences, and learn from their reac ons to new, and some mes difficult, situa ons. By explaining the 4 areas of Educa onal Goals, Principals understood the AFS Programs and the goals. l AFS Student Learning Journey: Aditya Chaudhary, Dean Academics and Innova ons, Sunbeam Schools, Varanasi, shared the student learning journey which began with an Iden ty Iceberg ac vity. It made the par cipants put together all of their visible, less visible and invisible components. With the visible factor’s individual gets a racted and excited of what catches instant a en on, less visible awareness comes li le later in life and not visible factors are not easily seen and take me to frame an opinion. The session explained the cultural adjustment curve - the journey of the students while on the exchange program.

The day ended with elec ng regional representa ves from the 4 regions- North, South, Central & West with an expecta on from the representa ves to be ac ve & able to communicate on a wide range of ideas, knowledge, & skills on behalf of the schools of their regions and built a be er associa on with AFS. We look forward to strengthening our associa on with Schools in India & provide them with significant opportuni es to globalize their schools.

Hos ng | Programs Annual Hosting Trip for 2018-19

#AFSeffect Before the final departures of host students of 2018-19 batch, AFS India organized a week-long Annual Hos ng Trip for them from 31st March to 6th April 2019 to Southern India from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. The trip was for 6 nights and 7 days. Total of 45 host students par cipated in the accompanied by the Staff Members.

The places covered were Bangalore, Coorg, Chikmagulur, Puducherry, Mahabalipuram and Chennai.

Community Service: The student who completed a minimum of 50 hours was en tled to this scholarship . Top 09 students won this scholarship. It is a ma er of great pride that some students exceeded even 80 hours. l l l l l l l

Stay at Elephant Dubare Camp in Coorg, visit to the beach; Trekking to the highest point in Mullayanagiri (Chikmagulur); Auroville, lunch at the organic café and DJ night in Puducherry, UNESCO heritage sight-seeing in Mahabalipuram, were some of the highlights of the trip.

Overall, Annual Hos ng Trip was enjoyed by the hosted students.

The students had great fun and enjoyed a lot with their fellow host students. They clicked a lot of pictures and shared on social media.

The students enjoyed local food and got a glimpse of another culture in India. We are happy to share some beau ful pictures of the trip. It was good exposure for them to observe different culture, people and try new cuisine.

Another highlight of the trip was the distribu on of the scholarship amount to the students. This year AFS India successfully implemented the enhanced local language learning and community service plan to give a very interac ve, hands-on and local immersion to the hosted students. The scholarships were provided to students on this op onal trip if they have done excep onally well in both these plans, including passing tests. The two scholarship themes: Local Language Test: The student who cleared both language test 1 (conducted at mid-term) & language test 2 (conducted in February 2019) were eligible. #AFSeect Overall, 52 Host par cipants a ended the orienta on, along with 05 facilitators and the Hos ng Team from the Na onal OďŹƒce.

The facilitators equipped the par cipants with various talks and sessions which were focused to prepare them with the focus of readjustment and re-entry to the natural countries. The par cipants

were given individual counselling moments, recognizing the dive of their exchange journey.

The orienta on served as moments of introspec on for the par cipants with real and unreal expecta ons. This also becomes a reason to retrospect on their ac ons and look forward on their goals especially in returning back gra tude to their host communi es, the shortcomings to pick themselves up and recognize the posi vity in their learning for the future.

On the intercultural aspect, there were sessions on Cultural Con nuum with the mee ng trajectories for two Icebergs, Wall of Success, Reflec ng Challenges upon return, Cri cal Incidents and Future Goals, My tool bag, Returning Home & What I miss, Before & A er Perspec ves, Seeing with New Eyes, Bridging the Gap, Preparing to let go and las ng wri ng le ers for next genera on along with a plan of Ac ons.

Equally, the Host par cipants also had the opportunity to visit their respec ve Embassies with 14 country representa ons along with AFS India Staff. Embassy visits were an integral part of sharing #AFSeffect with the officials. Hosted par cipants engaged in an interac ve discussion where they shared about their me in India focusing on the skills and experiences they learned during the AFS Study Abroad experience. The Embassy Officials enjoyed the me spent with the hosted students and wished them best for their future.

Volunteerism 2019 Annual Volunteer Meet

#AFSvolunteer We are happy to announce the successful comple on of the 2019 Annual Volunteer Meet from 18th April -21st April in New Delhi.

Being a volunteer-driven organiza on, this is one of the most important events we have at AFS India where we invite volunteers from all the chapters to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism, recognize them for their wonderful eorts and discuss the future course of ac on for the coming year. 2019 Annual Volunteer Meet featured eminent keynote speakers, panel discussions, concurrent sessions, workshops by like-minded organiza ons and resultsoriented small group discussions.

Along with the advocacy of Intercultural learning and global ci zenship educa on, the meet also focused on development and associa on with the Partner countries and other like minded organiza ons.

The event was full of learning through fun-ďŹ lled ac vi es. The meet had 146 par cipants including alumni, volunteers, educators, host families & partners from Sri Lanka, Nepal & Bhutan. We also

had 52 hosted students who joined for Gala Dinner, Cultural Show & AFS Grand Award Ceremony.

18th April 2019 The evening started with Angela Roye (AFS India Board Chairperson) & Divya Arora (AFS India Na onal Director) warmly welcoming the guests.

With an interes ng ice-breaker ac vity, par cipants got the opportunity to learn more about each other. The ice-breaker set the tone of the meet where volunteers were encouraged to engage and connect with each other in the next few days.

Moreover, we had a cultural show, which was one of the best part of the evening, where the host students gave mesmerizing performances-some of them danced on the Indian tunes, some sang the Indian melodies, some played a musical instrument and some of them recited poems with meaningful ac ons. Truly it was amazing to see such bright performances of the host students. It really converted the room into a powerhouse of energy, everyone screamed with joy and apprecia on. The evening ended with the gala dinner.

The morning started with the AFS Grand Award Ceremony which was one of the most important part of this event as it highlighted and recognized the reless eorts of our superb volunteers, alumnus, schools, chapters and host families.

A er the tea break, the highlights and achievements session was done to create awareness about the major happenings in each of the departments at the na onal level during the last year. For the same ac vity, volunteers were given the chance to reflect on the work done at their chapter level by pas ng their chapter names for the ac vi es they had done. Through this, volunteers were given the opportunity to discuss and learn about the best prac ces from each other – helping them plan for the future. This was one way of highligh ng the major works of the chapter.

Moving further, volunteers a ended the Paper Presenta ons on different topics which was facilitated by 4 different speakers focusing on promo ng the global ci zenship like.

Implemen ng Global Ci zenship Educa on in India by Deepak Solanki The session focused upon different ways to implement Global Ci zenship Educa on in India along with the role played by the government and policy makers in advancing it. By the end of the session, the par cipants had about 30 ideas and project plans to be implemented in their respec ve communi es.

Crea ng Global Classrooms for a be er tomorrow by Sukhnidh Kaur Global classrooms entail equal opportunity for all, and this requires func onal inclusivity. Offering a peek into the lives of vulnerable

students, their perspec ves, and experiences, this session introduced audiences to differently abled, LGBTQ+, socioeconomically under-served and special needs (both learning disabled and academically gi ed) students, within the classrooms of Indian schools.

Strategies to Implement Global Ci zenship Educa on in India

by Kalai Selvi The session introduced par cipants how the concept of Global Ci zenship can seamlessly blend into the School Curriculum when internal members of the School community engage and involve with external organisa ons to consciously collaborate. The speaker talked about various ini a ves that immerse students in a deeper understanding of their connec on and interdependence with the world around them that help them recognise the inevitability of Globaliza on and its influence on enriching their lives.

What it means to be a responsible Global Ci zen? by Nandita Kothari This session built understanding on sustainable measures of innova on to promote SDGs as a Global Ci zen. The session laid in lines with Meemansa, a garment manufacturing company that produces women ethnic wear, producing garments from upcycled le -over fabric waste, reducing impact on the environment and also empower rural and urban underprivileged.

20 April 2019 The day started with an influen al talk on the topic of Volunteerism and intercultural educa on: why it is more needed than ever by the key note speaker for that day, Francisco Marmolejo, (Lead, Global Solu ons Group on Ter ary Educa on & Lead Educa on Specialist for India of The World Bank Group).

A er this engrossing session, the volunteers went on to a end the concurrent sessions which were planned for the day.

Sustainable Development Goals – Understanding them be er and crea ng sustainable projects by Hosherdar Adil Polad, CISV The session facilitated understanding of the word in trend: SDGs. The session looked at a few SDG goals to understand them in details and also looking at crea ng projects and ac vi es (Long and short term) related to them.

Intercultural Learning- Heart and Soul of AFS by Ajay Mehta and Bhavya Arora, AFS India This session introduced par cipants to the significance of having intercultural learning at the very heart and core of AFS Programs and ini a ves and how it in turn builds tools for Global Competence.

The workshop took them to reflect on the metaphor of Culture and the role it plays in everyday life and introduced the concept of “Global Ci zenship” and its link with every day ac on.

Decoding 21st century skills for Global Ci zens by Vaibhav Mi al and Urvashi Goyal from the World Youth Council This workshop took par cipants through an unconven onal and fun approach towards understanding the “QI” (Key) skills that every individual must have to be globally competent in the 21st century.

The workshop enabled volunteers to introspect and challenge the pre-exis ng ideas of self and others, be a cri cal thinker and have a crea ve approach towards choosing from various alterna ves.

Conflict Resolu on- Conflict Styles Presenta on and Assessment by Saumya Aggarwal and Mannat Dhillon, Youth for Peace Interna onal The way we address conflict directly affects the effec veness of the conflict’s outcome. Through this session, facilitators built an understanding among the par cipants about conflict styles and its consequences. There are many ways to approach conflict and decisions regarding conflict are based upon the importance of issues and rela onship.

3. Wrote le er of apprecia on to volunteers in Pan-India

The last day of the program began with the mo va ng talk on the topic of The Need of Changemakers in the 21st Century delivered by the key note speaker for that day Ankit Kawatra, who is the founder of Feeding India (a leading NGO working towards the eradica on of hunger, malnutri on and food wastage in India).

He presented his views on the process of change making and discussed how, youngsters can bring a posi ve change in the society through ideas and efforts. His enthralling talk encouraged the volunteers very much.

4. Sending special shout-out to other AFS volunteers via social media

A er the mo va ng talk, Partners from Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan talked about their respec ve organiza ons and shared their insights about their countries' cultures and tradi ons.

The day ended with The Joy of #AFSEffect where the volunteers appreciated and recognized the other volunteers by 1. Designing Cer ficates of Recogni on for the fellow volunteers.

This session was aimed towards celebra ng and recognizing the efforts of the volunteers who dedicated their me, energy and love for the advancement of AFS's mission in India. The Joy of #AFSEffect depicted the true spirit of #AFSEffect. During this session, we also presented the gi s as a token of love and apprecia on to the volunteers. Lastly, the day ended with a thank you note to all the volunteers who a ended the Annual Volunteer Meet.

Overall, the meet was very successful, fun filled and mo va ng. It surely encouraged the promo on of intercultural learning, volunteer engagement and recogni on among everyone. All volunteers bid goodbye to each other with the promise of mee ng again soon and of course working more closely towards achieving new goals.
