LEADERSHIP

Educating Young People to Care for the World

United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) State of World Population Report 2023 released sometime in April 2023 shows that India is on track to be the world’s most populous country and India is the country with the largest youth cohort (15-24 years). As future leaders, policymakers, and change-makers, these young individuals of India and the world hold the key to shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for our planet

Hence, we as responsible adults, must focus on the kinds of human beings that we are raising and the kinds of societies we are fashioning. By equipping the youth with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to understand and address pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges, we empower them to become responsible and compassionate global citizens.

With growing global interdependence, molding and shaping the next generation of individuals who can engage in effective global problem-solving and participate simultaneously in local, national, and global civic life has become imperative. To achieve the goal of creating responsible global citizens, education plays a crucial role. Education helps in fostering environmental awareness and sustainability. They learn about the consequences of human actions on the environment, such as climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction. Armed with this knowledge, they can make informed choices which can be a source of innovation, new thinking and lasting solutions

Moreover, education nurtures empathy and compassion in young minds and provides them with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to tackle complex global issues. Intercultural learning exposes them to diverse cultures, perspectives, and social issues thereby inculcating qualities like tolerance and a sense of social responsibility. By teaching them about poverty, inequality, and human rights, we can inspire young people to become advocates for justice and equity They learn to challenge prejudice and discrimination, promote inclusivity, and contribute to building a more just and harmonious society

Teaching empathy and promoting social responsibility through education helps young individuals understand and respect diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences.

AFS India focuses on growing programs for the underserved to promote intercultural learning and experience By doing so, AFS India is creating the awareness and tools for creating a more just and peaceful world This investment in the well-being of the planet and future generations ensures a world that is more compassionate, sustainable and harmonious.

Thus, by educating young individuals to care for the world, we are empowering the youth to make informed decisions that minimize their ecological footprint and contribute to preserving the Earth for future generations.

Zahra Rizvi, AFS Chapter - Delhi

My Experience with AFS…

I was formally introduced to AFS in my school, Bal Bharati Public School, Rohini, in 2009, by Joseph Kuok, then President, AFS Chapter – Delhi. He had come to invite applications for various exchange programs. The mission of AFS to promote peace and justice captured my heart. I found a platform, wherefrom I could do my tiny bit in this vast world! Since then, I have been an active AFS volunteer, ready to help in which ever capacity, I can.

Over these years with AFS, I have had the pleasure of making bonds with several students and teachers from across the globe - with people coming to India and me traveling across several countries. To mention a few volunteers: Benedikite, Richard and Annette from Denmark, Gilda and Beatrice from Italy; and Rana, from Egypt. And exchange students that our school hostedNils and Jasmin from Germany, Francesco and Tommaso from Italy, Laurea from the USA and Enomoto Yutaka from Japan But the greatest gift I got during this journey is Levi Haas, my third son from Germany He has been part of our family since 2013!

AFS has also satisfied my ‘wander lust’ to a great extent. I went on a ‘Teacher Exchange Program (Denmark) for three months Sep–Nov 2010. It was both a challenge and a great learning experience. Soon after, I participated in the 2-week JENESYS Program (Japan) in December 2011. self-discipline and diligence can cause a rise from the ashes. I visited Egypt for ten days in January 2015. Other than these exchanges, I represented AFS India at the National Orientation for Thai exchange students in Thailand (2012) and at the tenth Volunteers’ Meet in Serbia in 2018 Moreover, I represented India at PEACE (Peace in Europe and Asia through Global Citizenship Education) – a project supported by the European Federation for Intercultural Learning and AFS Asia Pacific Initiative in 2017.

I end with a few lines by Walt Whitman-

I am not to speak to you, I am to think of you when I sit alone or wake at night alone, I am to wait, I do not doubt I am to meet you again, I am to see to it that I do not lose you

AFS Hosting Year Program 2022-23 – France, Italy, Japan & Thailand

End Of Stay Orientation May 2023

An eventful End of Stay Orientation was organized for 10 host students from France, Japan, Italy and Thailand who were placed in the AFS Chapters - Ahmedabad, Anand, Delhi, Indore, Kolhapur, Nabha, Patiala and Vadodara. Mr. Indrajeet Thorat, Educator, Sanjay Ghodawat International School, Kolhapur and Suyashi Dwivedi, AFS Alumna facilitated the orientation sessions on describing feelings, reflecting on the exchange journeys, letters to the next generation, returning home, cultural evening, etc. They also visited the Taj Mahal in Agra before departing to their respective countries.

I feel incredibly grateful for having had the opportunity to participate in this program. My year in India has been like riding a rollercoaster, with countless ups and downs, but I would not have wanted it any other way. This experience has given me so much, not only in terms of personal growth and self-discovery but also in expanding my horizons and broadening my understanding of the world. It has opened my eyes to the beauty of different cultures and the importance of embracing diversity. As I prepare to leave India and return home, I will carry with me a newfound sense of confidence, resilience and gratitude that will stay with me for a lifetime.

The welcoming and friendly nature of the people I interacted with in India encouraged me to be more outspoken and confident and I started giving speeches in front of people. This experience made me feel that everything is possible, there are no limits. Generally when students like myself think of exchange program, parents become very apprehensive but I am glad that my parents decided to send me on this program. I got the opportunity to immerse myself in the vast culture of India that is an ocean of cultural values and beliefs and learnt the importance of social empathy.

At first glance, I feel as though my life has not changed that much since coming to India. However, as I spend my last few weeks reflecting on my year abroad I have come to realize that this experience has positively impacted me more than words can express. I learned the value of dependability and learned how to balance being dependent and independent. I have learned so much both culturally and personally. This global society I am now a part of will continue to impact my life after I return. I have learned countless things during my time abroad and I know that the impact created during this time has made me a better person today.”

End of Stay Orientation May 2023

6 host students from the USA who were placed in AFS Chapters - Ahmedabad, Kolhapur and Delhi participated enthusiastically in a 3-Day End of Stay Orientation organized in Delhi.

Aditi Sahu, AFS Year Program 2022-23 France

“Salut! C’est Aditi. This has been one of the best times of my life. France is a country you can easily fall in love with not only because of its extravagance but also due to the amazing traditions, architecture, art and families from underrated parts of the country that are its true beauty. This exchange program has made me acknowledge and appreciate so many things in my life. I have come to recognize the beauty of my host country and India. The depth every culture has to offer, the uniqueness of different languages and the aspirations of people from different communities.

I became so self-aware in terms of aspects such as how they eat, how they dress and how they do their daily routines all so that I could adapt to them as best as I can. After leaving my bubble in India, in France, I had to make so many decisions without any supervision, I had to approach everything by myself to solve the problems I faced and now I’m so proud of how far I have come.

Along the way you learn so much, you learn to communicate and navigate through your differences with the new people around you and the best part about it all is finding common ground and thriving in it. I remember once I called the white bread we eat in India “normal bread” and my host family laughed at that because for the French “normal bread” is a freshly baked bakery sourdough kind of bread. They were surprised but it became our inside joke and a memory we laughed over together Such anecdotes stay with you for so long when you live in another country and they are the best part of it all. I would recommend this program to everyone. I've come to adore this country so much and I hope anybody who gets such an opportunity, must not let it go.

When you are in a foreign country that has traditions and a lifestyle completely different from yours, you learn to observe so much I believe discovering new things should never end The world is vast with a million things that will astonish you, and your youth is the best time to capture it with the shutter of your heart and the lens of your eyes.

My Unforgettable Journey

I come from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Through the YES program, I had the incredible opportunity to be hosted in Wisconsin, embarking on a journey of solidarity, adventure, and personal growth. My host family, especially Marlis, my host mom, holds a special place in my heart. We formed a deep bond, immersing ourselves in each other's cultures through movies and activities like diamond painting and visiting a water park We explored Wisconsin together, from the Haunted House to State Museums and the Zoo Lights program. Easter was a joyful celebration, with Marlis hiding colorful eggs throughout the house for me.

Food played a significant role in our cultural exchange. I introduced Marlis to Indian flavors and taught her how to make traditional dishes. We even visited the National Cheese Center as part of a winter cluster activity. I am immensely grateful to my host family for their love, support, and sense of community I miss them dearly I experienced Halloween for the first time in the United States, carving pumpkins, watching movies, and volunteering at a trick-or-treating event. Exploring the eerie forests and fields during the autumn cluster activity added to the excitement.

Attending school in Wisconsin was a spectacular experience. Despite its small size, the school community welcomed me with open arms. AFS students and teachers, particularly Ms Dohm and Ms Hass, fostered my cultural learning and academic success. Participating in clubs like FFA, FBLA, AFS, and FORENSICS broadened my understanding As I reflect on my unforgettable journey in Wisconsin, I am filled with gratitude for everyone who played a role in making it possible.

I was and am feeling epic!!!

I am a 16-year-old high school student at Him Academy Public School Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. I was selected for the Asia Kakehashi Project, a scholarship program in Japan. The experience was filled with anticipation as I embarked on the journey alone, not knowing what to expect. Now that I'm back home, I have countless memories and stories to share.

I learned about the Asia Kakehashi Project at my school and went through multiple application and interview rounds for the selection process I was placed in Nagoya, central Japan, with a host family and attended a regular Japanese school. Experiencing the differences between Japanese and Indian schools was eye-opening, and I made friends from various Asian countries during my exchange. The host family became like my own, and saying goodbye to them after nine incredible months was tough

Being on my own made me more independent and taught me to appreciate myself The experience had its ups and downs but was filled with joy and novel experiences It positively influenced my personality , self-awareness, and interest in volunteering. The program also enhanced my academic progress and broadened my perspective. The AFS staff provided support, helping us adjust to the new environment, understand local customs, and solve any issues we faced. Through the program, I discovered my skills, limitations, tolerance, and potential. It transformed me into a global citizen, an open-minded individual, and a confident person.

I highly recommend exchange programs to other children as they offer invaluable life lessons It builds character, self-assurance , empathy , and grounding. This experience has been one of the best things that ever happened to me. With this program, I got the incredible opportunity to spend 9 months in Japan, immersing myself in the vast culture and values that this country and the exchange program has to offer. I am grateful for the memories, friendships, and newfound confidence I gained during this exchange.
