How can students be prepared to succeed in a globally interconnected society?
Today’s students are poised to enter the world at a time when the entire planet is watching India with anticipation and promise. India would emerge as the world’s third-largest economy soon. I wish that our children choose careers that will be driven by inquisitiveness and curiosity while leveraging talent and energy to create value and happiness. We need to ensure that our world is not only prosperous but happy too Our technology-led world has become a global village and ‘geography’ is gradually becoming ‘history’. Students must embrace a global mindset, understand the planet’s complexities and actualize that the world is flat. They must be adaptable to uncertainty and adopt continuous learning A global citizen must also thrive on ‘change’, both quantum and discrete in products, markets, technology and organizations.
Our students should be sensitive toward cross-cultural issues and engage seamlessly with stakeholders across the globe. Moreover, it is important to develop a long-term vision rather than a short-term approach. There’s a distinct need to arouse the latent leader in our youth while embracing lifelong learning in this ever-changing world. Unfortunately, most Indian students remain unemployable due to a lack of life skills and improper grooming Therefore, moving up the value chain is a distant cry on the horizon for many of them. Schools and colleges have to respond to this employability challenge by blending a good mix of knowledge, soft skills and attitude; and making them true global citizens. AFS India addresses this gap effectively by shaping young minds through its global programs which students must leverage. As one of the Directors on the AFS India Board, I share William Blake’s verse written in a different context that beautifully sums up the challenge before students endeavoring to succeed as global citizens.
To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower; Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour!

My exchange student experience in the United States was a lifechanging journey that expanded my horizons and shaped my perspective in profound ways. From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in a rich tapestry of cultures, ideas, and opportunities that forever altered the course of my life.
One of the most amazing things about my exchange program was the diverse group of students I met from various backgrounds. Interacting with them allowed me to see the world through different eyes and appreciate the beauty of diversity. We shared our stories, exchanged ideas and formed deep connections that broadened my understanding of different cultures and made me feel like a global citizen.
Community involvement was a core part of my exchange program, and it taught me the value of giving back. Through volunteering and helping others, I had the privilege of making a positive impact in the community. Whether it was lending a hand at local shelters, participating in fundraisers, or mentoring younger students, I learned the immense power of small acts of kindness and how they can create a ripple effect of goodness.
Trying new sports and activities helped me conquer fears and uncover hidden strengths I realized that personal growth thrives when we embrace new experiences and push our limits. Now, resilience and adaptability serve me well in various aspects of life

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE BACKBONE
In 2008, my younger son Janak was selected for the prestigious KL-YES scholarship to the US. Witnessing him being welcomed into a completely unfamiliar family, we were inspired to open our hearts and home to a child coming to Gandhinagar for their exchange.
Our first host student was Jessica La Porta from Italy in 2008-09. Jessica quickly became an integral part of our family She became the daughter we never had This unique and beautiful experience led us to continue our association with AFS, eventually leading to the establishment of the Gandhinagar chapter in 2013.
As office bearers in the chapter, my family and I continued to host exchange students as well as AFS volunteers. Each hosting cycle presents its own challenges, from dealing with multiple hosting in one year to catering to specific dietary needs. The unbreakable bond of love that AFS creates has even brought back 3 of our former students to revisit us after their exchange, proving that the sense of belongingness endures over the years.
'Coming back to India in June 2023 was an amazing experience. Reconnecting with family and friends was an overwhelming experience. Coming for a second time also meant, connecting my Swiss life with my Indian life, which I was thankful for ’

Overall, it was a memorable experience, and I eagerly anticipate participating in more AFS meets in the future.
Ananya Singh, Participant AFS Regional Meet (North India) at Pinegrove School 12-14 May 2023
I was here for a month (which at the start felt like a year, but I guess it takes time to settle in). I believe I could not have been assigned better roommates. The experience exceeded my expectations, and I had a lot of fun staying together with students from different nationalities I got to learn about their culture, their ways of doing things and generally more about Denmark, its education system and overall, how people live here. The Danish education system is the EXACT OPPOSITE to that of India, be it anything. (there really aren’t any common parameters to compare them on!) The food was different, like nothing I had tasted before, but I loved most of it. Evening activities, and weekend activities like sailing and mountain climbing were super fun and engaging as well, and I learnt a lot from them
The Indian Cultural Night was a BLAST! I hosted some games for the students and helped host the event. Everyone loved the Indian food we cooked for them. But most importantly, I came back more confident, more mature and definitely more independent than ever, content with my experience in Ranum! For this, I would like to thank all the teachers, AFS India and AFS Denmark faculty! This surely was a oncein-a-lifetime experience and I am extremely grateful to be a part of this journey.
AFS Global Up Educator Program is an Intercultural program to help teachers become Globally Competent and further develop Global Competence in their students. STORIES ALUMNI
Prachi Pundhir, YES Alumna 2015 - 16
From being a school girl of a very small and remote village, little did I know that one day I would become a community leader! And the credit for this amazing transformation goes to the fact that I was selected for the KL-YES Program in 2015 My exchange year taught me the importance of embracing my cultural identity and sharing it with the world.
In 2018, I initiated Project Peepal in my village, Rikholi, Uttarakhand to promote sustainable lifestyles and economic opportunities for the local community.
Project Peepal
We have created a natural food products brand that provides a fair market for village produce, encouraging farming We promote experiential nature and village tourism, inspiring the younger generation to appreciate their community. Women's self-help groups prepare food for visitors.
Participating in YES alumni programs, particularly the Do Your Bit (DYB) and DYB 2.0 Projects, has been instrumental in my personal growth. DYB 2.0 allowed me to mentor students aged 13 to 17, guiding them in creating climate action projects aligned with SDG 13
Inspired by DYB, I launched Do Your Bit Rikholi, a climate action initiative to address deforestation and restore native ecology. Every monsoon season, Project Peepal organizes tree plantation drives on the Rikholi village temple hill, involving local villagers, school students, and volunteers. So far, we have achieved a 75% survival rate for the saplings planted; thanks to the use of tree guards.
Over the past two years, we have planted a total of 280 trees, with a goal of replanting 1/4th of the temple hill's land area this coming monsoon season. My exchange year and involvement with AFS kindled a drive in me to give something back to my community, providing me with a platform for learning, growth, and networking Our project supports and transforms six villages, five selfhelp groups, and approximately 130 families. Ultimately, we aim to facilitate reverse migration and promote equitable wealth distribution in the Himalayan communities.
Through Project Peepal, I aspire to empower village communities and revive their crafts, knowledge, and traditions, creating a movement that extends beyond financial stability. I am grateful for the opportunities and support that have shaped my journey.
