According to Mwalimu Julius Nyerere “Africa peace, unity and people-centred development are inextricably ... You can't have peace, in any country, in my view, without justice” How can you achieve unity and people centered development with seamless integration. One important African proverb to keep in mind is “Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable”. This proverb simply translates that unity makes a community stronger. This what Africa needs at this point in time, and that explains why the world has not allowed that to happen over the years.

The debate on the benefits of intra-African trade has indeed been prominent in the last decade. There is a consensus among experts that intra-Africa trade has the greatest potential for building sustainable economic growth and regional integration on the continent.

Many writers and studies have suggested that African governments will have to provide efficient agriculture, housing, transportation, medical and logistics services if they are to assuage the restless population. African despite spirited effort has not been able to enjoy seamless integration, as has been achieved in Europe making peace extremely elusive in most part of the continent. African continent remains fragmented due to poor physical and digital connectivity, resulting into a complex and difficult task of integrating unequal partners with the following profile: Harbouring 33 of the World’s 47 Least Developed Countries (LDCs); 16 Landlocked Countries:- Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ethiopia, Chad, Mali, Malawi, Lesotho, Central African Republic, Eswatini, Niger, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe (most are LDCs); Many writers estimated that by 2050, Africa is projected to house more than 2.2 billion people, making up over half of global population growth. This estimation begs the question of how propriety and peace can be achieved in the continent.

One important factor to note is that the connection between peace and economic development is unarguable. Most Intra-African trade in goods is transported by road:- transport costs contribute as much as 40% to the final price of traded goods. If peace keeping or conflict cannot be managed it will surely affect trade because absence of peace introduces insecurity which introduces distrust in the African community by its global trade partners.

As at 13 January 2021, WTO/International Trade Statistics reveal, that the share of Intra-regional trade in services is very low in Africa (only 7%) even if it comprises more than 50 economies. The share, in contrast, is highest in Europe and Asia by 63% and 53% respectively, Africa relies on Seaborne Trade, as about 90% of all African Trade is conducted by sea mostly via 90 major ports (which often serve the entire regional economic interests of neighboring countries, as 16 of Africa’s 55 states are landlocked. Eg South African ports like that of Durban, serve the economies of the whole Southern African region.

The fact that intra-African Trade accounts for only 15%, compared to about 47% in America, 61% in Asia and 67% in EU and its global share of manufacturing exports (less than 1%) underscores the shallowness of regional economic integration in Africa.

In Africa, Non-Tariff barriers (including divergent and unharmonized regulatory regimes in key infrastructure services and other services sectors) are more significant barriers than tariffs.

In an article published by the Organization for Economic Co-operational and Development (OECD) on the 7th of May 2020, the disastrous impact of the Corona Virus pandemic on Africa’s Economy was discussed. It stated that the Pandemic affected Africa’s Economy in three waves (i) Lower trade and Investment from China (ii) a demand slump associated with the lockdowns in the European Union and OECD Countries and (iii) a continental supply shock affecting

domestic and intra-African Trade. The OECD in that article advised that African leaders re-assess the tradeoffs between short, medium and long term priorities In another article published by the Wiley online Library, it was confirmed that as the pandemic accelerated, the Socioeconomic Damage increased in Africa. Measures deployed by governments to contain its spread caused severe socioeconomic dislocations. It points out that Many African governments responded with programs to mitigate personal hardship and disruptions to economic life.

Also, the effect of the pandemic with regards to peace promotion and keeping in Africa was disastrous. Whilst the pandemic did not necessary worsen the conflict landscape, it proved to be distracting seeing as it prevented organizations, institutions and governments from keeping and promoting peace.

One of the notable observations of the African Peace Magazine during the pandemic was that the pandemic gave great advantage to many people especially persons in government power who sought to tighten the grip, access, power and control in the government.

Today, over a third of the world trade takes place within regional trading arrangements like the European Union, the African Economic Community (AEC) with African union member states, under its first phase known as the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the eight recognized Regional Economic Communities (RECs) as the building blocs for AfCFTA:- ECOWAS, SADC, COMESA, EAC, AMU, ECCAS, CEN-SAD and IGAD. The Agreement Establishing AfCFTA, 2018/2019 • Adopted on 21 March 2018; Entered into force on 30 May 2019 (having been ratified by 36 AU member states/signed by 54 out of 55); • A – 30 Articles continental model law on international trade agreement, legally binding on its state parties; • The AfCFTA Agreement primarily establishes a Continental Free Trade Area, as envisaged by Article 6 of the AEC Treaty of 1991 and the first ten years implementation plan under the African Union Agenda 2063, “The Africa We Want” • Its scope covers Trade in Goods and Services, D i s p u te S et t l e m e nt Me c h a n i s m , I nve s t m e nt , Competition policy and Intellectual Property Rights; and any other subject matter/or protocol within the realizable objectives of the Agreement (see Articles 1-2, and 6-7 on scope and phases of the Agreement); • The AfCFTA Agreement together with its three Protocols negotiated under phase 1 (on Trade in Goods, Trade in Services and Dispute Settlement) were adopted by the AU Assembly on 21 March 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda.

To face its reality, and create a future it can be proud of, African must begin addressing its challenges now, and today. African governments must wake up to the reality of its growing population while employing sustainable means to seek economic growth through collaboration with relevant institutions. Only by doing this can the

African narrative of hunger and poverty begin to change, ever so gradually.

Clearly, the Agreement on AfCFTA represents a unique collaborative effort by African countries to bolster regional and economic integration, by among other things, increasing intra- African trade and investments, as well as deepening economic relationships by negotiating under phase 2, investment, competition and intellectual property rights protocols (hopefully by the end of 2021, in the best interest of all).

Hence, in line with African Peace Magazine’s mandate of promoting peace through innovation, entrepreneurship, unity and integration on the continent. The African Peace Magazine UK, in conjunction with her strategic partners, Rethink Africa Foundation, African Fact Checkers, Centre for peace and Conflict management in Africa and African Right Watch is set to host the African Peace Award 2021 in celebration of the unique AfCTA milestones, while drawing attention to the task ahead and how AfCTA can be the key to unity and Peace in the continent post Covid 19.

The event is designed to host business, political, and diplomatic leaders. It is set to have in attendance, policy makers and think-tanks on Africa and Africa related issues.

The African Peace awards 2021 seeks to honor persons, institutions, organization, governments and others whose actions, and efforts have in one way improved or contributed to peace keeping and conflict management in Africa as well as improving the lives of Africans.

The African Peace brand has noted Peace promotion and conflict management in any society alleviates uncertainly and risk which in turn promotes economic growth in any given community. It contributes to the economic growth of the community by increasing the productivity in capital and labour as well as good governance.

The African peace brand introduces its awards in the hopes of promoting peace globally and specifically in Africa with the hope of effecting change in Africa first and then globally.

Pastor (Mrs) Bipiminafieye Opuaya Agha (fondly called Pst O), is a Nigerian Minister of the Gospel and the President/Founder of When Women Pray International (aka WWP), head quartered IN ABUJA with well over 37 branches locally and internationally. A nondenominational Christian Women Ministry where ordinary women are turned into praying women with headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.

A teacher of the Word, she conducts over a dozen domestic and international conferences every year. Pst O deliberately and intentionally lives by the tenets of 2 Corinthians 4:5, by constantly showing thousands of women the need and utmost importance of knowing God for themselves.

Pst O’s teachings cover a wide range of topics with particular focus on the family,

Prime age development initiative, was incorporated in Abuja with the aim of improving the lives of our children by encouraging the parents to read baby and toddler parenting books provide social interaction and ask lots of questions because we know early child development within the first 5 years of life are critical because of this a woman whose heart and compassion for children was so high that it prompted her to initiate and found an organisation called prime age development initiative (PADI) building children's capacity. Her name is barrister Ekwutosi Odurukwe Angela, her love did not end there

she equally organizers training yearly on how children can start very early to cohabit peacefully with each other so as to help promote peace and religious tolerance in Nigeria and Africa and for 2021 training workshop African peace magazine was there to Grace the occasion it was a two days training workshop for children with the team (reserving a seat for another) the occasion was Grace by prominent men and women who are ambassadors of peace from different parts of the country, cardinal Onaiyekan was equally present to encourage the younger generation to live in peace with each other.

Can you tell us your name madam?

My name is Barrister Odurukwe Ekwutosi, the founder of prime age development initiative an organisation that we put together to promote peace in Nigeria and Africa what inspired the idea of this organisation is because of long age love I have for children. And children ministry I work in the children ministry in the church and so every time I see one child or the other doing what I don't like, like getting involved in violence and fights I said to myself this is not what I saw while growing up, we didn't behave like this it now became a burden to me seeing the way children behave I begin to see things in a different angle but I never knew it was a call that was how I began to from this organisation but I started doing it in the church and later have to structure this Foundation together.

What inspired you to organize this workshop today?

I organized this two days training workshop for children, so that a seed of peace will be planted in them today, that religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence is possible. If they can grow up with this mindset then Nigeria will be a b e t te r p l a c e to l i ve a n d c o h a b i t peacefully

1. Kindly tell us a little about yourself?

Ans. My name is Jamesetta Malid Henries, born September 21, 1982 in the city of Monrovia, Liberia West Africa. I currently serve as the Humanitarian P ro g r a m m e O ffi c e r a t A f r i c a n Yo u t h Fo r Development Commission, Liberia - AYDEC. I am a Women and Girls Advocate, a Humanitarian and entrepreneur who believes in educating, empowering and promoting women and girls; most especially the underprivileged community. I am a dedicated volunteer with over 15yrs of experience, who has been very committed to the process of volunteerism. I have volunteered in many ways and also encouraged others to volunteer as well.

In 2017 I Founded a youth driven nonprofit organization based in Liberia named People Advocating To Help-Liberia (PATH-LIBERIA) that is doing very well and in February of 2021 I established the Jamesetta M. Henries Humanitarian Initiative.

For the past fifteen years I have been fully and actively rendering services to my community and Liberia at large. My goal is to help individuals achieve a more independent and fulfilling life.

Ans. My advice to the youth is that they should show up at peace building seminars to gain more knowledge on peace building. Let them widen their understanding of peace building, Support peace initiatives.

Ans. Over time, the new replaces the old. People are influenced by popular fashion people wear in popular films, television shows, online videos, books, and music. ... In this way, fashions constantly change over time.

Ans: Non-government organisations (NGOs) have become increasingly involved in the international response to armed conflict, some aiming to mitigate the

effects of war and others to in Africa help end the violence.

Rabbi or Minister Onleilove (pronounced: “Only Love”) Chika Alston, Founder of Prophetic Whirlwind Ministries, was born and raised in East New York, Brooklyn. Rabbi Onleilove is a global community organizer, speaker, and writer. After experiencing poverty and homelessness in her youth, Rabbi Onleilove developed a compassion for people and justice and knows that the gospel is truly “good news to the poor.” Rabbi Onleilove’s spiritual

journey began when she was 10 years old, living in kinship foster care with her grandmother Freddie Mae in East New York, Brooklyn. At 14-years old, she walked into a National Baptist Convention Church and accepted Yahshua as her redeemer.

She is one of the first African American women to visit Jews in West Africa where she studied, learned from, and researched these communities for 6-years. This resulted in her book: Prophetic Whirlwind: Uncovering the Black Biblical Destiny. To date, “Prophetic Whirlwind” is one of the few, books written by an African

American who has spent time with Jews in West Africa. In September 2020, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Zoe Life Theological College, an accredited theological college in Nigeria and India, on account of the research she conducted for her book.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Human Development with a minor in African American studies from Penn State University, she completed a year of service with AmeriCorps Public Allies New York. In 2011, she received her Master of Divinity and Master of Social Work degrees from Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University S c h o o l o f S o c i a l Wo r k , respectively. She is currently a Doctor of Ministry Candidate at The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University (STVU) where she is focusing on Global Leadership and Institutional Reform. For over a decade, Rabbi Onleilove has worked

as a faith-based community organizer and advocate. In 2015, she was appointed as the youngest member of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Inaugural Clergy Advisory Council. In 2016, Onleilove testified before the United Nations Working Group for People of African D e s ce nt o n Ma s s Incarceration’s Impact on Black Women & Girls. Rabbi Onleilove served as the second executive director of PICO-Faith in New York, where she led a multiracial and multifaith organizing federation of 70+ congregations representing 8 0 , 0 0 0 N e w Yo r k e r s .

In 2012, I prayed and fasted

for two-weeks about my Hebrew identity and living Torah. On the last day of my fast I received a call from my prayer partner Danielle which confirmed that I needed to live a Torah based life. As I continued to research Torah through the eyes and history of African Jewish tribes, I started to feel led by the Ruach (spirit) to share what I was learning with Black youth I saw on social media floundering with unanswered questions related to faith. I started to post about Torah and the Black roots of the faith once delivered to the saints. After seeing what I was sharing on social media two African American women saw the potential Yahweh put in me and asked me to facilitate two sessions on the Black Presence in the Bible at Trinity Wall Street Church for Black History Month 2014.

Those two women were Roz Hall and Roberta Todd of The Union of Black Episcopalians New York chapter. After that workshop people started to

ask if I had a book and I didn’t have a book, social media, or webpage but during this season Prophetic Whirlwind was born. The inspiration for the name Prophetic Whirlwind: Uncovering the Black Biblical Destiny came from the Honorable Marcus Garvey’s speech Look for Me in the Whirlwind. In this speech Garvey preached about who Black people were and who we would be through the spirit’s power.

From Genesis to Revelation Blacks are central in the Scriptures, yet this presence has been hidden due to prejudice and ignorance.

Understanding the Black spiritual heritage is essential to u n d e r s t a n d i n g B l a c k history and the freedom movement for justice.

Prophetic Whirlwind seeks to uncover this rich history while inspiring through Biblical study and historical analysis.

5. W h a t ’ s y o u r b e s t approach to conflict resolution? My approach to H e r W i s d o m L L C w a s conflict resolution is to allow founded in 2018 and is a b ot h p a r t i e s to ex p re s s consulting firm focused on themselves in a safe space, D i ve r s i t y, Eq u i t y a n d Inclusion, gender justice, faith-based partnerships, and advocacy as well as political organizing.

Chika’s Closet was founded in 2017 after a trip I took to Ghana and is focused on bringing “AfroGlamour home” through providing the best in African tailored and ready to wear fashion as well as accessories. Our tailors are based in Lagos and Abuja, and we partner with African brands.

3. What does Peace mean to you? To me peace means Shalom which is a Hebrew word meaning nothing broken and nothing missing or whole. Peace is wholeness.

4. Can education bring about Peace? Education can help bring about peace but education alone cannot bring about peace because though education can expose us to knowledge that can help us develop peaceful communities, nations, and families, education alone will not bring about peace unless we implement what we are

with a moderator who recognizes the humanity of both parties involved. During conflict resolution each party should make “I statements” and statements where they take responsibility for their feelings or actions. Safe space, strong meditation and listening are keys to conflict resolution.

6. What is your plan for towards achieving peace in your Country? I live in the United States and as a faithbased community organizer and advocate I work towards racial and economic justice

utilizing the power of congregations. My plan is t h at w h e n s o c i et i e s a re economically just and when groups are not marginalized due to racism or ethnic hate that makes a society more secure and peaceful.

Fu r t h e r m o re , w h e n t h e largest number of citizens are engaged in political life in their country the citizens feel valued and like their voices are heard and this prevents people from being recruited for terrorist groups, gangs, or religious cults. I believe community organizing that involves as many people as possible in the political process can lead to peace. I am also very focused on peace in Africa especially West Africa namely Nigeria and Ghana due to ministry, business and family ties in these places and the number of Africans from the diasporas looking to relocate or return to these countries. I believe community organizing could work in Africa as well, especially if we involve churches and houses of faith.

7. Do you believe that technology is helping to make the world more? peaceful? I believe technology on one hand is exposing people to more knowledge and connecting people across cultures and b a c kg ro u n d s w h i c h c a n promote peace, but I also notice that hateful information and fake news is spreading due to technology, and this is leading to more

hate crimes and conflict across the world. I think we need to teach young people and even many adults how to determine if information online is false or not.

Technology is a tool that is neutral, and it is how we utilize it that will determine if technology is a tool of peace or a tool of conflict.

8. What advice do you have for the youth? I would advise youth to find the purpose they were created for early and to pursue that purpose. Learn from your elders, ask your parents and grandparents about your family history, and learn from the successes and mistakes and determine to be someone who breaks negative generational patterns. Also enjoy being young, work hard but have fun and do not follow the crowd. Do not be afraid to be yo u r ow n p e r s o n . S e e k Yahweh early and serve Him as a young person but do not fall into faith organizations that will rob you but join

congregations that will help build you up and help you live in purpose. Respect those who came before you but also know that you have a unique work to do. You are loved and special. Know this.

9. Why is fashion always i n t h e n ew ? Fa s h i o n i s influenced by culture and culture is dynamic so fashion will constantly change while also building on old trends.

Fashion is a beautiful way to express yourself and your culture. I love fashion, especially our traditional African fashion.

10. What do you think of Non-governmental organizations in peace keeping? I think that though there are NGOs doing great work sadly, especially in Africa there are many NGOs that push what benefits the west and not what benefits Africa. There are also NGOs that get large amounts of funding to serve the people, but we never see their work benefiting the people. Some

countries have thousands of NGOs that have been in existence for decades and yet the countries are not in peace but have constant political, tribal or gender turmoil and violence. NGOs need to be evaluated for true impact and if they are in Africa these organizations must benefit Africans first and foremost.

10. African leaders are renowned for holding onto power at all costs, what is your view? I think this is very unhealthy and has led to many African countries being stuck in cycles of political instability and nepotism. We need to have clear and equitable pipelines to leadership in Africa where the elders are respected but the talented youth know there is a place for them. If we do not develop clear and equitable pipelines to leadership and leaders continue to hoard power Africa will continue to lose its best and brightest to the west. This must change.

12. What do you think of the African Peace Magazine initiative? I think this is a wonderful initiative and should receive full support from Africans and our African diaspora. We must pursue peace not only for ourselves but for our children. Keep this important work up and you have my full support.

13. What is your advice for African immigrants? African immigrants should learn the history of the countries they are immigrating to. Do you know the African American Civil Rights movement led to changes in visa laws that allowed higher numbers of Africans to immigrate to America? The Civil Rights movement is directly responsibility for why you can immigrate to America. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and many others died not only for themselves, but their work led to legislation being passed that also included America allowing higher numbers of Africans to immigrate to America. Do you know how the country you are immigrating to treated your home country during colonialism and the role this country has in your country’s conditions today? You must learn this information. Learn about the full diversity of Blacks living in your new country do not think television and music will teach you accurately about Blacks in your new country.

Should we look to Nollywood to teach us about you and your family? No, so take the time to learn about those who make up the diaspora. Also

get involved in groups for the diaspora of your tribe or country. Get involved in Black immigration community organizing groups like African Communities Together (ACT), UndocuBlack and BAJI (The Black Alliance for Just Immigration), these organizations provide free or low-cost immigration legal services and advocate for African immigrants to be treated equally in society, provide community as well as career opportunities and t r a i n i n g fo r t h e fi e l d o f community organizing and politics. Do not be isolated and only think of back home because your children will be impacted by the conditions in your new country and though we respect your unique culture sadly the dominate culture in your new country will lump you in with all other people of African ancestry and in a way, we are a large extended family and need to stick together but on the other hand never forget who you are. Also respect the different African cultures that make up the worldwide African diaspora. Do not

stereotype other Blacks and know that racism is real so be prepared for it but do not let it hinder you. Also be willing to unite with your Black brothers and sisters.

14. Tell us about Human Rights Violations in Africa? I want to lift-up human rights violations against women in Africa. I am a leader in Pan African Women of Faith an initiative of Bread for the World and the World Council of Churches which works with African and African diaspora women ministers from across the world. I also am the United States Coordinator for Mothers of The Nations founded by Bishop Priscilla Otuya the first Nigerian woman to lead a Pentecostal denomination. These organizations fight for women to have equality and peace.

The human rights of many women in Africa are still under attack: from female c i rc u m c i s i o n t o wo m e n ministers being marginalized, to women being sexually harassed at work and university to domestic violence and rape. We cannot just quote what the United Nations or African Union says about women’s rights or think that if a woman can go to school or work everything is ok. We must see the African woman as key to African liberation. The human rights of African women must be a serious concern. Africa will rise no higher than its women.

15. Why do you think we have so much inequalities in Africa? The legacy of co l o n i a l i s m a n d s l ave r y

greatly contributes to why we have so many inequalities in Africa. 1,000 years prior to the trans-Atlantic slave trade we have the trans-Saharan or Arab slave trade. We cannot ignore our history and just move forward, and we cannot say will my family did not participate, but you may have lost family members and colonialism impacted everyone. I also think we need to examine what happened prior to the slave trades and colonialism, why do we often value money over each other? Why do we trust foreigners but not each other? Why are we willing to do business with China but not other African countries?

We truly need education, healing, repentance, and reconciliation. We cannot just s k i p p a s t s l ave r y w h i c h opened the door to colonialism until this is dealt with Africa will not rise. These may be hard words but words we n e e d to h e a r. T h e inequalities of yesterday are now the inequalities of today.

We m u s t a l s o s u p p o r t leaders who are by us and for us and not just who is backed by the west.

Furthermore, we still depend on foreign donations because we have a great deal of corruption from the top to the bottom of our continent.

Yes, we have many honest people who love Africa, but these people are not supported often because they may not be rich or may be wealthy but not flashy. We must develop and choose leaders of integrity and support these leaders and develop our own economy and have cultural pride. Africa has all it needs to thrive. Africa does not need to be rescued by other countries.

18. Why is Africa always in the news for the negative things? Racism in media will always highlight Black pain and failure but will hide Black excellent and joy. In America Nigerian immigrants are the most educated and have the highest incomes but when you hear about Blacks in America do you see this in the news? No. Why, because the goal is making Blacks in America of any ethnicity seem lower in the culture.

16. What do you think of the A f r i c a n R i g h t s Wa t c h Television initiative? I think this is a great initiative. We need television shows that promote positivity for Africa and the African diaspora. I support African Rights Watch 19. Why is so difficult for Television.

Sadly, Africans even in the same village will divide due to being in tribes that are even related but today have slightly difference language and names because this makes us feel special, but does this help our children?

The system of racism wants Africans divided so that they can take the spoils of our continent, but we can respect our differences and still unite as a bloodline if we look at things maturely.

Show the youth that they have a future in honest work and not just in a quick buck. Megachurches could play a role in this effort by using some of the offerings collected to hire young people for training. We must give the youth a future to stop crime.

1) I arrived in NYC in early 1974 at the age of 25. I was in search of something meaningful to get involved in. I had been a gambler and a hustler after leaving home at the tender age of 16 arriving first in San Francisco, then Los Angeles, ending up in Las Vegas. People of color will never have any REAL power unless they have ECONOMIC power. And we DO have power – over 3 trillion dollars of GDP in Africa, and at least another trillion and a half in the US,

Caribbean and elsewhere. But if we don’t unite and start looking out for our OWN economic interests, we will get sidelined again by the huge multinationals like Amazon and A l i b a b a ; co m p a n i e s t h at a re making hardly any investment in our communities, if any at all.

Making that investment in our future is what Africa House Global is all about. The economies of Africa and the Caribbean are entering a golden age. Economic growth across both regions is above the world average, and private foreign direct investment into Africa is at record levels. Corporations are waking up to the huge spending power of Africa’s new middle class.

People of color in America are likewise prospering. If African Americans were their own country, they would be the 15th richest country in the world.

So, what is the problem? Hundreds of millions of people of color are being completely left behind.

Multinationals are making huge profits in Africa, while millions of

people there still have no safe d r i n k i n g w a t e r, h u n d re d s o f thousands are dying from waterborne illnesses, and 40 billion hours are wasted every year collecting water. Here in America, the richest country history has ever known, an entire generation of young black men is being channeled straight from high school to prison by a system that has utterly failed them.

If record prosperity across the world hasn’t helped those left behind, and hasn’t given them hope, what will?

3) Peace and Prosperity – focus on the prosperity and peace will come!

While it is a great gesture to invite African descendants living abroad to “Return to Africa,” it is not feasible for the majority. We need an initiative that we all can participate in. We must work together for the common good to lift each other up, rather than always look to others for charity. We must not let history repeat itself! I think this initiative should originate from Africa – African Union (AU), and be adopted

by Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP), Caricom, Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Candomble Villages - Brazil, etc.

I have this unique and singular privilege of addressing you on the anniversary of a current, persisting and ever dominant i s s u e affe c t i n g m a n k i n d today: the issue of Peace, today being the International Day of Peace. I feel greatly honoured.

My focus in delivering this paper, will be to examine the

pragmatic strategies and options concerning the subject matter of this topic, which are key to broaching this amorphous topic and attempting direct solutions to a malleable subject-matter.

For ease of reference, I have limited this paper to Nigeria particularly and Africa generally; rather than the World in general in which case I would have had to prepare a much more comprehensive treatise of at least 50,000 words – and hope to perhaps, manfully scratch the surface! I have been given all of 15 minutes.

Introduction:

They are regarded as requiring empathy and the rule of law and imposing an obligation on persons to respect the human rights of others, and it is generally considered that they should not be taken away except as a result of due process based on specific circumstances.

On the other hand, MerriamWebster Dictionary simply defines human rights violation as the abuse of the basic rights of people by treating them wrongly. When the rights of people are not protected or are blatantly disregarded, those rights are said to be violated.

Individuals and the state can be guilty of committing human rights violation. A state can do so either directly or indirectly; it can also be intentional and/or as a result of the state failing to prevent the violation. The violation of human rights can be physically violent in nature, example is police brutality, or it may not involve physical violence, like when the right to fair trial is violated. When there is a conflict between individuals or groups within a society and the state does nothing to intervene and protect the vulnerable people and groups, that state is party to human rights violation.

African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights which in sum is a continental court established by African countries to ensure the protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa. Its mandate is to complement and reinforce the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. It is the judicial arm of the African Union and one of the three regional human rights courts together with the European Court of Human Rights and the InterAmerican Court of Human rights. The Court has its permanent seat in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania.

The states bear the primary responsibility of protecting and encouraging human rights. When a government ratifies a human r i g h t s t r e a t y, i t h a s a n obligation to respect, protect and fulfil human rights.

Therefore, when violations occur, it is the responsibility of the government to intervene and prosecute those responsible. It must hold everyone, including itself, accountable. Civil societies also have a responsibility to prevent human rights violations. Businesses and institutions must comply with d i s c r i m i n at i o n l aws a n d promote equality and every individual has a responsibility to respect the rights of others.

The international community is not exempted from this. It has an obligation to monitor governments and their track records with human rights and to call them out when there are violations of those rights. This is one of the reasons the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights came into existence.

The Covid Effect Before one can effectively discuss economic recovery and peace post Covid-19, we must understand the effect of Covid-19 on the world economy and peace.

Some of the effects of Covid19 in African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights include

that: • I t h a s b e e n p ro p e r l y managed • It brought about less travels • It magnified the use of technology such as video conferencing, etc • Several cases have been decided in this fashion.

• It has restricted the amount of personnel but just last August, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights resumed training of members of its Legal Panel List, etc • It is in her Lordship’s view that the Covid Pandemic should be seen as a challenge and calls to our powers of creativity and flexibility.

Covid-19 significantly affected the world economy n e g a t i v e l y ; t h e macroeconomic impacts of the crisis were significant and a lot of economies became unpredictable. The global economy suffered a shock it had never suffered before in modern economic history.

Unemployment spiked and millions of people were expected to lose their jobs; lots of businesses closed down, a lot of supply chains were severely interrupted; global remittances fell by 20% and oil and commodity prices collapsed. The effect of the collapse of the world economy was catastrophic for many African nations, especially those who were forced to import most of their essential goods such as food, medicine, etc. Lots of

livelihoods were destroyed and small businesses came to a halt. The World Bank predicted that Covid-19 was expected to push 49 million people into extreme poverty.

The consequences of this poverty and lack exacerbated other conflicts, social unrest and/or interpersonal violence, especially in urban settings.

The effect of Covid-19 on peace cannot be neglected.

Covid-19 increased the risk of violent conflicts and instability. It stressed the weak systems of governance and livelihoods, the fact that the governments were not able to rein the virus in and that people could lose their livelihoods in just a twinkle of an eye. It threatened to fuel social division, hate speeches, group grievances, migration, inequalities, corruption and structural macroeconomic fragilities.

There were tensions over food scarcity, breakdown in civic trust, rumours about the virus fuelled inter-ethnic violence and so forth. There was no way peace could have existed in a world with so much fear, rancour, hunger and distrust.

If Africa is going to foster economic development and growth across the Continent.

This is a clarion call to the Governments of the African Continent to put a united hand together to ensure that this vision becomes a reality.

The Lawyers are the Scribes usually called upon to provide and apply the ‘glue’ to foment, secure and cement true and legally bound African Unity.

CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic has p ro d u c e d a h e a l t h a n d economic crisis of unprecedented scope. As e c o n o m i s t s a n d policymakers turn to the task o f re c o v e r y, p ro t e c t i n g human rights remains intrinsically important, both morally and legally. It is also instrumental to the ends of public health and economic resilience. It is my argument that the human rights to life, health, education, social security, housing, food, water and sanitation - among the so-called economic and social rights - are as essential as civil and political protections.

Moreover, rather than simply ameliorate the inevitable i n d i g n i t i e s a n d m ate r i a l deprivations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of duties to respect economic and social rights should help ensure their protection in the post COVID-19 economy. For this to occur, however, I suggest that the relationship between unconditional enforcement of human rights to economic recovery is undeniable being well informed by the regrettable rather longer h i s to r y of h u m a n r i g ht s abuses Africa has had to endure and her economic

crises. We must change this narrative which will be assisted by both international and comparative economic and social rights legal frameworks and participatory processes as Africa builds with the help of the AU particularly a sustainable and viable human rights protective infrastructure across the Continent.

As the impact of Covid-19 is gradually subsiding, Governments of the world and the United Nations are putting programmes in place to ameliorate the effects of the pandemic and help in the recovery of the economy. To ensure that the world recovers faster, it is important to protect the rights of the p e o p l e s . M r. O l i v i e r D e Schutter, has called upon world leaders to establish strong social protection floors guided by human rights principles to make them more effective in eradicating poverty and reducing inequalities.

There is no harm in the AU and other African bodies and of course the Governments of Africa adopting same.
