We would also like to take a moment to thank our team of writers and photographers who have worked hard alongside us (the editors) and helped bring this newspaper to life. At UAS, we have 4 houses that you can be a part of: Wolves, Vipers, Falcons, and Vipers.

Each of those houses require a house captain to manage and look over them. The role of the house captain is one of the most important roles there is as they are responsible for representing their house in various activities as a leader and role model for other students.

For example, in the upcoming talent show, each of the house captains will judge the performances for their assigned house. They are also the ones encouraging everyone to participate in house events and build more school spirit. Last year during sports day, the house captains encouraged everyone to partake in all the different activities and ensured that everyone had a great time and stayed active! As mentioned previously, house captains serve as role models for their fellow students as they are chosen for their leadership qualities, and commitment to the values of their assigned houses. This sets a positive example for others’ to follow.

THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU!

On October 5th, students from all over the globe gather to celebrate ‘World Teachers Day’. This day is dedicated to all the teachers who take time to help us succeed, and for the teachers at UAS who always encourage us to keep trying and doing our best, even in tough times. Having access to good education is an advantage that some individuals fail to see.

Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." This quote emphasizes the importance of education. Having knowledge can help others become aware of their surroundings.

Without an education, people will fail to better understand everything that happens in this world. But most importantly, remember that without our caring teachers we wouldn’t have known the things we know today.

I like my teachers because they are helpful and caring. They always assist me whenever I need help. They are always kind to me and understanding.

During the month of October, UAS unites in a sea of pink to honor Breast Cancer Awareness month. We wholeheartedly recognize the magnitude of this disease, wearing shades of pink not just as a fashion statement but as a symbol of empathy and commitment.

Throughout this initiative, we pay tribute to survivors, remember those we've lost, and reaffirm our collective dedication to supporting the ongoing fight against breast cancer. Our commitment reflects the power of community and the promise that together, we can bring about a brighter future in the battle against this disease.

STAFF MEMBERS SHOWING THEIR SUPPORT BY WEARING PINK FOR B.C. We hope you didn’t miss the amazing bakesale that took place in the cafeteria on the 13th. Lots of pink treats and cups of lemonade were sold to spread awareness on breast cancer. To express our concern for this topic, we also had a pink accessories day, allowing students to attend school with amazing pink accessories. We loved to see all the different pink elements on each student, promoting the support of breast cancer. We hope you’re looking forward to seeing our beloved staff decorated with pink nails on the 24th. The NHS is going to be passing out pens and refreshments to our staff to raise awareness on breast cancer. And not only that, but free manicures too! We hope that every single student and staff member acknowledged breast cancer during this past week, and continues to spread awareness on this cause. By having events like these, we continue keeping Breast Cancer patients in our hearts.

OVEMBER: MEN’S HEALTH ISSUES BE LIKE TOBY FLENDERSON FROM THE OFFICE, GROW A MOUSTACHE AND HONOR THIS MONTH

-THE OFFICE

Movember, which is made up from the names "mustache" and "November," is a global annual event which is significant as it raises awareness about men's health issues. Every November, thousands of individuals, who call themselves "Mo Bros,” come together to grow mustaches and support this cause.

Movember is important as it encourages conversation starters about men's health, bringing oftenoverlooked issues such as prostate cancer, mental health issues, and suicide prevention to light. This campaign not only helps spread awareness, but is a chance for people to educate each other about this important and overlooked concept. To add on, Movember plays a valuable role in fundraising for research and support programs, ultimately saving lives by advancing our understanding of these conditions and providing resources for those who need help. Furthermore, it creates a sense of community where people unite to make a positive impact, breaking down barriers and inspiring men to take proactive steps toward better health.

Halloween at UAS is a time of fun and creativity, where our school community comes together to celebrate in a unique way. The campus transforms into a canvas of vibrant costumes, ranging from classic monsters to pop culture icons, and even some handmade costumes. Our annual dress down day never fails to amaze, with students and staff competing for the title of 'Best Dressed.' Beyond the costumes, the atmosphere buzzes with Halloween-themed activities, from movie nights to bake sales. Halloween at UAS is a tradition that reminds us all to embrace our inner child, have some fun, and create lasting memories.

The day was filled with amazing, and some scary costumes from our students, a Halloween parade which was done by the elementary students, a bake sale, the Trunk or Treat event, and a movie night after school. This year, UAS held a ‘Trunk or Treat’ event for the very first time. Parents had the opportunity to come to school and fill their trunks with candy. Students could then go trick or treating! This event was a huge success; so we want to give a big thanks to the parents that made it possible!

Welcome to the culture segment of the UAS SCOOP! In this segment, we will feature all the events related to culture that take place at UAS. Moreover, within our school we have more than 70+ different nationalities present and everybody has their own traditions, backgrounds, languages; and this segment will highlight all of it. From spotlighting different cultural festivals to showcasing the achievements of our diverse student body, this segment has it all.

We invite you to read about all the different perspectives that define our school and join us in celebrating all cultures!

CULTURE AT UAS At UAS, we embrace and celebrate our different cultures whenever possible! Our campus consists of so many different cultures, languages, backgrounds, and it’s this diversity that brings our community together and more united. UAS is a place where students exchange their traditions, perspectives, and experiences. From celebrating different cultural festivals such as, International Day, Chinese New Year, Irani New Year, Diwali, language clubs, and global awareness initiatives, we aim to foster an environment that encourages every student to take pride in their culture while also respecting and appreciating others’. It’s the combination of so many backgrounds that make our school such a special place, where we also grow as global citizens who respect and celebrate our differences. However, the UAS community isn’t the only community that celebrates different cultures. In fact, Dubai celebrates different cultures all the time.

CULTURE SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH: In the spirit of cultural enrichment, we recently introduced our first Chinese Parent Language Program.

This unique initiative allowed Chinese-speaking parents from all grade levels to ask questions in their native language and receive responses in Chinese from our dedicated educators, Mr. Proctor and Ms. Knig LÉA-MARIA & PARI

UMRAH WEEK OF: 16TH

The annual Umrah trip to Mecca took place in October. Around forty-five secondary students participated in this trip. The Islamic department organized this trip to be rich with activities in Mecca and Madinah. Students arrived at Mecca and performed Umrah at same day. Day two they had a tour in Mecca to visit the Hajj holy places like Arafat Mountain. In Madinah, students were able to visit the Prophet’s PBUH mosque and his grave. They also visited some holy places like Uhud mountain and Quba mosque (the first mosque in Islam).

The trip’s aim was to enrich and expand knowledge of the religion through practical experience. Students were able to learn many social skills like cooperation, collaboration, patience, and self-reliance.

Going on the Umrah trip was a remarkable experience. The trip was meaningful because we prayed together, shared thoughts, and supported one another. The Islamic department's dedication was clear in everything they did, from planning the journey to educating us about each ritual strengthened our faith. Because of the Islamic department's hardworking efforts, this journey became an important part of my religious growth. I want to share my sincere gratitude to the Islamic department for making this possible and giving me the chance to strengthen my faith.

This journey wasn’t an ordinary travel experience, it was a profound exploration of my faith.

WELLBEING EVENING OF THE ARTS OCTOBER 11TH, 2023

Another event that took place during mental health and wellbeing week in October was the Wellbeing Evening of the Arts. This event was organized by the art department here at UAS and was a huge success!

NATIONAL Parents and students were both welcome and had the HONOR opportunity to release their stress and worries through SOCIETY the form of art. The Wellbeing Evening of the Arts exemplified the impact that art can have on our emotional and mental wellbeing. From painting stations to a community mosaic that everybody there helped build, the evening was definitely one to remember! Students, teachers, and parents were encouraged to use art as a creative outlet. It was an NHS VOLUNTEERS AT THE EVENT: YOUSIF ALDAMASSY, ERINA KHAKWANI, BASIL SALAHEEN, ZEINA FARAJI evening that not only OCTOBER 11TH, 2023 showcased the incredible talents within our school community but also reinforced the role art plays in our lives. It served as a reminder that even in the whirlwind of life, especially when things get hectic; art can offer a sanctuary for reflection and growth. A huge thanks to Ms. Alina and Ms. Domanie for organizing such a great event for the UAS community!

During the month of October, UAS dedicated one whole week towards mental health and wellbeing, in order to ensure that students within our community are healthy and happy. Both mental health and wellbeing are interlinked and are fundamental to our overall health and happiness.

Having a strong and well adapted sense of wellbeing can help us overcome difficulties and help us in achieving the goals we have set for ourselves.

During mental health week, on Friday, October 13th, students and staff members were encouraged to have a walk around the track during first period. This encourages them to comprehend the value of leading a healthy lifestyle and motivates them to take good care of themselves. It was delightful to see everyone participate and understand how crucial mental health and wellbeing is. Events like these are what make the UAS community so special!

FLAG DAY Flag Day was first celebrated in the UAE in the year 2013. The idea was conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to celebrate the accession of Sheikh Khalifa as President of the UAE in 2004. It is now celebrated every year on the anniversary, November 3. Flag Day involves various events and activities, including flag-raising ceremonies, cultural events, and community gatherings. Overall, it is a significant occasion where people come together to celebrate their love for the UAE. On the third of November, UAS celebrated Flag Day. Each grade level was allocated a specific color to wear; this was so we could make a life-size UAE flag out on the field. Here are some pictures from the day!

The national flag of the UAE consists of four colors: red, green, white, and black. Each color symbolizing courage and strength, hope, peace, and the rich resources of the country. The flag is an essential symbol of national identity and unity, and Flag Day serves as a reminder of the values and achievements of the nation. It's an opportunity for citizens and residents to come together in a spirit of solidarity and pride in their country. The UAE is known for its commitment to progress and unity, Flag Day has become an annual tradition, reinforcing the sense of national pride and belonging among the diverse population of the country.

FLAG DAY “As the president of the Emirati committee I think that it is important for the UAS community to understand and appreciate the local traditions. That is why we set up events like national day and flag day. Although they take lots of time and preparation, we want UAS students and staff to take part in celebrating our country. The Emirati committee was created back in 2017 by my sister and now we are working with Ms. Maram to further understand the Emirati dialect, and with an upcoming Emirati dictionary. We are also focusing on other aspects of the UAE culture.” -Rashid AlFuttaim, Grade 12

THE STUDENT VOICE SECTION: YOUR CHANCE TO SPEAK UP.

In the "Opinions" section, we, as students, seize the opportunity to articulate our concerns and proactively explore potential solutions to the challenges that shape our educational journey. Through these thoughtful contributions, our students not only shed light on the challenges they face but also showcase their resilience and creativity in finding solutions.

It's a testament to the strength of our community and the determination of our young minds to make our school a better place for all. We encourage all students to continue speaking up and contributing their insights to foster positive change.

ULYANA PETROVA In my opinion, having two-hour art blocks would be a dream! In a way, art is a therapeutic experience where people can relax and have their minds mainly focus on creative thoughts and ideas. With a longer block, individuals could expand their creativity, having more time to experiment with various techniques and refine their works, without being interrupted with the shorter sessions. It would allow us to dive deeper into our art and produce more unique and meaningful pieces. This would not only boost our artistic skills but would allow us to rest from daily stresses and just be in the moment.

YOUSIF ALDAMASSY

The Universal American School of Dubai is one of the really good schools in Dubai, with such a welcoming and encouraging environment and community. There is little this school lacks, but one thing I’m sure all high school students, like myself, would appreciate is if the school were to add personal lockers. This would give each student the chance to customize their locker and make it their own by putting their own personal touch on the lockers. BASIL SALAHEEN I think it would be beneficial for students to have the option of utilizing their study hall time for extracurricular activities, specifically engaging in sports with their classmates. This year, the structure of our school days as IB students has notably shifted, with the exclusion of P.E. from our schedules. Personally, I believe that integrating sports into our free time is vital. Not only do sports contribute to our physical well-being, but they also help ingrain values such as responsibility, accountability, and discipline in the students.

We’ve had some really fun events that brought us all together, the Student Government did an outstanding job organizing a Halloween Movie Night. “The United Arab Emirates Pamphlet is an informational pamphlet about the UAE’s culture and history. The pamphlet was made by me and my CAS group including Luay, Daniel, and Neil in collaboration with the Emirati comittee for flag day (November). The purpose of this project was to raise cultural assimilation between locals and non-locals and to promote a greater sense of community. The inspiration derived from observing our community in Dubai in general; we realized the lack of connection between locals and non-locals as well as a lack of cultural awareness which can probably be attributed to increasing globalization. Thus, this pamphlet gives a brief synopsis of the UAE and things important to Emiratis.”

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM MS. RIANNE FOX I wanted to take a moment to express my excitement about the recent addition of our school's new newspaper and the inclusion of an Elementary section. It is indeed a wonderful development for our community, one that I believe will greatly enhance our connection and communication within the school.

We have already had some fantastic events this year that have brought us closer as a community, and I am thrilled by the positive response to these activities. The commitment and dedication demonstrated by everyone involved truly reflect the spirit of our community.

As we look ahead, I am eager to explore the exciting opportunities that the new newspaper will bring. I am confident that it will serve as a platform to further highlight our achievements, share important information, and celebrate the diverse talents within our community.

QUATHON

The aquathon is a competition that UAS takes part in during the 30 X 30 fitness challenge in Dubai. This challenge takes place during the 28th of October until 26th of November and is held in order to enhance physical health, but also contributes positively to mental health. The idea of the challenge is to encourage Dubai residents to get moving for 30 minutes everyday for 30 days. To display how our UAS community takes part in this challenge, we hold the aquathon. At the aquathon, students in elementary school compete against other schools which include GEMS, DIS, Kings, and more. The aquathon is a two part competition, the first is swimming and the second is running. It is also divided into two divisions for each grade, one for girls and one for boys. Students need to swim four laps in the pool then quickly get out of the water, go outside, wear their shoes along with their clothes, and run around the track twice.

Although this is a competition, the aquathon is essentially implied to motivate our students to get more into exercise and start living healthier lifestyles at a younger age.

ECAP: MONTH OF OCTOBER LOTS OF EVENTS TOOK PLACE, LET’S TALK ABOUT IT AND ABOUT YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS.

PARENT, STUDENT, AND TEACHER CONFERENCE The P-S-T conferences are the foundation of collaborative growth and goal-setting.

These meetings bring parents, students, and teachers together to discuss academic progress, challenges, and aspirations. This collaborative effort nurtures a strong home-school connection and empowers students to become more self-directed learners, setting them on the path to becoming tomorrow's leaders.

EMIRATES LITERACY FESTIVAL: GRADE FIVE The Emirates Literacy Festival took place in October. The 5th graders took part in the chevron cup and learnt about teamwork and brainstorming through this insightful and educational experience. In the Literacy Festival they had to read Arabic books and participate in a competition with other schools. They read in Arabic and expanded their love for reading through this experience. Furthermore, we are so happy to say that we had two teams that participated this year, compared to previous years where we just had one team participating.

GRADE THREE END OF UNIT CELEBRATION The grade 3's Unit of Inquiry last term was Culture. The unit started with students bringing in items related to their culture, and they presented this to the class. They had to research their own culture and compare this to the UAE culture, which they then showcased to their families. They used PowerPoint for the first time, and they did an incredible job!

FIELD TRIPS: GRADE FIVE AL KHOR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

On the 11th of October, Grade 5 went on an educational field trip to Ras al Khor Wildlife Reserve. During this trip, students had an opportunity to meet representatives from Dubai Municipality, and ask them questions about the purpose of protected areas and how the government maintains them. They also had a fantastic opportunity to observe the peacocks at the location.

HALLOWEEN FACE PAINTING On the 31st of October, the High School Student Government provided face painting for our Pre-K, KG1, and KG2 students. This definitely got them into the Halloween spirit. Here are some pictures from the event!

LIL BAHADUR PARIYAR

1987-2019 OCTOBER 15, 2019 Four years have passed since we said farewell to a beloved member of our UAS family, Lil Bahadur Pariyar, our esteemed security guard. Lil's enduring presence at our school left an indelible mark on our hearts, and his commitment to the safety and well-being of our community will forever be cherished. Lil was not just a security guard; he was a guardian, a friend, and a reassuring presence. His warm smile and kind words provided comfort to students and staff alike, making our school a safer and more welcoming place. Though Lil is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the memories we shared with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lil's family. We hold your memory close, dear Lil. You will forever be missed and never forgotten.
