Our primary students loved spending their time in the library this academic year. In addition to their weekly library lessons, students have had the opportunity to change their library books during lunch time. Our students have also been introduced to the world of e-books through our new application SORA, which gives them a chance to read books in a different format, suitable for travels, holidays, or whenever the print books are not available to them The main purpose of adding these extra opportunities is to strengthen students’ reading habits and help them become life-long readers
The library has continued to be a calm and safe space, with a primary objective of developing and supporting reading for pleasure and instilling a love of reading in all our students.
To motivate students in developing their independent reading skills, we continue to use the Accelerated Reader programme, engaging them in exciting competitions throughout the year This tool has had a positive impact on the reading comprehension skills and learning outcomes of all students involved. This school year, we have expanded the programme to year 2 students, extending its benefit to younger learners.
In November, the primary library hosted the ‘Bookworm’ book fair, which gave our students and parents an opportunity to explore the latest publications We are anticipating another fantastic book fair at DIS brought to us by Magrudy’s, this time alongside many other exciting events during the book week in April.

Well done to all of our History students this year – exam results at both IB and iGCSE were excellent. It is an exciting time for the department with two new members of staff with Miss McGrath and Mr Long joining Miss Smith. This has meant more opportunities for IB teaching, and a new (Edexcel) iGCSE course to get stuck into. With modules in the latter on Japan, Hitler, Vietnam and US Civil Rights, students will have a modern perspective on key events that shaped the 20th Century
At Key Stage 3, students have been studying the Roman and Abbasid Empires in Year 7, The Tudors and global exploration in Year 8, and the French Revolution and World Wars in Year 9.
Especially exciting is the formation of the new Senior History Society “The Bull Moosers” (with close links to Law and Politics Society), with speakers so far discussing Teddy Roosevelt, and more recently Bushido culture in Japan Future meetings will involve student presentations, and more visits from world experts from educational establishments around the world. Choosing GCSE Music has been a great decision that I’ve made! The GCSE Music course has not only helped me focus on my piano skills and develop them, but it has also enhanced my creativity in ways I did not expect. The composition work has pushed me to think outside the box, and, frankly, it gives me another excuse to listen to my favourite songs all the time!
Aekuss - Year 10 Student
One of my biggest highlights in PA at DIS was playing the lead in Aladdin. It was the first major thing I did in PA at school, and I'm very glad I got past the nervousness the audition I wasn't sure I'd be good enough, or if I'd be able to carry such a big role. But ever since I was selected, I found out why everyone loves PA It was an incredibly positive and supportive environment, where I was surrounded by like-minded peers who not only shared my passion, but helped me improve a lot That experience built my confidence more than anything else, and I learnt many tips and tricks from them on the art of performing The friendships I made, the encouragement from friends and teachers, and the overall sense of belonging made all the difference I was able to connect with my teachers a lot more With their guidance and support, I grew so much: not just as a performer, but even personally From that moment on, PA is family
Philip – IB1 Student & PA Prefect
“Being in High School Musical meant a lot to me as someone who just entered secondary. In the past, I’ve felt like I can’t be myself and it took me months just to change for a show but High School Musical just made me feel like I didn’t have to change a thing. I’ve met so many people that make me feel like we are a team High School Musical will always hold such a massive spot in my heart, it just felt like home, working with the sweetest teachers and the most enthusiastic crew ever. I’ll never forget how much this musical brought joy to me”
“Every single production has been such a thrilling experience, with lots and lots of room for growth in every aspect There's lots of opportunity for singing, dancing, acting and just having an exciting time. It has been an unforgettable experience for my time here at DIS, and has allowed me to grow infinitely more than I could've if I didn't participate Every year I step foot on that stage, I'm always ready to give it my absolute all and sing the house down. It is cathartic in a way I don't think anything else is able to emulate”
Izhaan – IB1 Student & PA Prefect

Next up was an exciting cable car ride over Sentosa Island, offering amazing aerial views before heading to Universal Studios for a day of adrenaline-pumping rides and fun The trip also included a deep dive into Singapore’s culture, with visits to Gardens by the Bay, where futuristic Supertrees and biodomes created a sci-fi-like landscape, and Marina Bay Sands, with its jaw-dropping architecture and panoramic city views Exploring the colorful streets of Chinatown and Little India gave students a taste of Singapore’s rich cultural mix, while a stop at Satay Street meant indulging in some of the best local street food
The learning didn’t stop there students got a glimpse of university life at the National University of Singapore and even had the chance to test their piloting skills in a Boeing 737 and F18 flight simulator! They also took part in a hands-on cooking class and got a peek behind the scenes at the legendary Raffles Hotel, discovering what makes Singapore’s hospitality industry world-class
Of course, no trip to Singapore would be complete without some shopping, so the students hit Orchard Road to explore the city’s best retail spots The adventure wrapped up with a delicious Indian meal and a thrilling night safari at Singapore Wildlife Park, where they saw nocturnal animals up close in their natural habitat From start to finish, this trip was filled with adventure, learning, and unforgettable moments Singapore left a lasting impression on everyone, and the experiences gained will be cherished for years to come!
“In the end, it’s not the speeches or the badges we all remember it’s the moments of impact and the friendships forged along the way.”

What we’ve accomplished:
Student Voice Surveys: We launched feedback surveys that reached across grade levels, giving every student a platform to share their thoughts on school life, academics and wellbeing
Planning for the future: We’ve started laying the groundwork for major projects, including proposals to improve school facilities, ehance student spaces, and support sustainability initiatives.
Collaborating with staff: By fostering stronger communication between students and administration, we’ve helped bridge the gap to ensure student needs are reflected in real decisions.

This year’s TEDxYouth@DIS was an unforgettable celebration of courage, creativity, and community.
With the powerful theme “The Brave and The Brilliant,” the Al Futtaim Community brought together an inspiring lineup of student speakers, external guests, and performers who shared bold ideas, personal stories, and innovative visions for the future.
From heartfelt talks on resilience and perseverance to cutting-edge insights on technological advancements and AI, the stage came alive with passion and purpose
The energy in the room was lively, amplified by a vibrant mix of musical performances and thought-provoking talks that kept the audience engaged from start to finish.
“Giving my talk at TEDx ‘The Brave and the Brilliant’ was something I’ll never forget. Standing on that stage, sharing my story, and hearing others open up about theirs made me realize how much courage it takes to be real and how powerful it is when we are. It was raw, inspiring, and honestly, kind of life-changing”
Haatim - Y10 TEDx Speaker
“'Being part of TEDx Youth: Brave & Brilliant was an absolute privilege Presenting alongside such exceptionally talented individuals, especially the IB students who spoke with such insight, passion and poise, was truly inspiring Their courage and clarity left me in awe What a powerful reminder of the brilliance our young people here at Deira International School hold.”
Mr Kieran Birrell - TEDx Speaker
“Being selected for TEDx 2025 was an incredible experience and something I’ll always be proud of. After attending TEDx in 2024, I set a personal goal to not just be part of the audience, but to be on that stage the following year I started by joining the TEDx organising team, with my first role focused on finding external speakers When applications opened for speakers, I was the first to apply because I knew this was my moment.
The whole process was such an interesting journey developing my topic, crafting the message, creating the visuals But more than anything, I didn’t just prepare or memorise my speech I lived it. Every word came from my heart, and my goal was to reach people in a real and honest way My talk, Stepping Out of Your Trap Box, was based on my own personal experiences of overcoming limitations and finding freedom beyond expectations”
“Hosting the event at Deira International School was truly an honour it was more than just a conference; it was a platform for the voices of the youth to shine. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved, and I know TEDxYouth@DIS will continue to inspire for years to come.”

On 3rd November, Deira International School proudly celebrated UAE Flag Day, a momentous occasion marking the anniversary of the accession of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as President of the UAE This annual event is a tribute to the nation’s unity, pride, and heritage.
To honour the occasion, we were delighted to welcome our parent community and Emirati students to take part in a special flag-raising ceremony held at our school. This year, the event featured inspiring speeches from Fatima in Arabic and Essa in English, as well as a heartfelt poem recited by Jawaher.
The highlight of the ceremony was the raising of the UAE flag by our youngest and oldest Emirati students, Rashid and Abdulla, symbolising the nation’s past, present, and future. The celebration concluded with a closing speech from our Heritage Lead, emphasising the significance of UAE Flag Day and the values it represents.
Following the ceremony, our parent community was invited into the school to enjoy refreshments and continue the celebrations together. The event was a wonderful reflection of our school’s commitment to fostering national pride and strengthening community bonds We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who participated in making this celebration a memorable and meaningful occasion

On Friday 7th February, Deira International School embraced the spirit of Hag Al Laila, a cherished tradition that celebrates community, generosity, and cultural heritage Throughout the week, our Heritage Heroes presented in year group assemblies, sharing the significance of this special occasion with students across the school
To mark the celebration, on Friday, 7th February, children wore UAE cultural dress, embracing the rich traditions of the region. As part of the festivities, students were also invited to bring sweets (from a suggested list) to share with their classes, fostering the spirit of giving that defines this occasion
In keeping with the tradition of sharing and generosity, every child received a fruit and a juice box to take home at the end of the day. It was a joyful celebration of heritage, unity, and kindness!
“During the holy month of Ramadan, our school community came together for a meaningful Iftar meal distribution initiative in collaboration with Red Crescent and Islamic affairs, spreading kindness and compassion to our local community
Students, staff, and volunteers collaborated to prepare and distribute hundreds of Iftar meals to local families and workers, ensuring everyone could break their fast. This act of service not only reflected the true spirit of Ramadan, generosity, unity, and empathy, but also strengthened our shared commitment to giving back and making a positive impact beyond our school walls”

“Participating in the Winter Souk was an incredible and immersive learning experience for both of us From the initial planning stages to the final moments of the event, we navigated every aspect of running a business, including budgeting, marketing, and customer engagement. Managing high customer demand tested our problem-solving skills, requiring quick thinking and efficient teamwork to ensure smooth operations.
One of the most valuable lessons we learned was the importance of adaptability. Whether it was handling long queues, adjusting our pricing strategy, or finding creative ways to attract customers, we quickly realised that flexibility and resilience were key to success. The hands-on nature of the event allowed us to put theoretical business concepts into practice, deepening our understanding of entrepreneurship.
Beyond the technical skills, the experience also pushed us out of our comfort zones, boosting our confidence in communication and decision-making. Seeing customers enjoy our drinks and receiving positive feedback was incredibly rewarding, reinforcing the impact of our hard work Overall, this experience not only gave us a real taste of running a business but also instilled in us a greater sense of achievement, independence, and entrepreneurial spirit”
This year we came together to recognise the International Day for Tolerance, a day that calls upon us to embrace the values of respect, acceptance, and unity. In an increasingly interconnected world, tolerance is not merely an ideal but a fundamental pillar of a thriving and progressive society. It is through understanding and mutual respect that we cultivate harmony, foster innovation, and build a future that is inclusive for all
The UAE stands as a testament to the power of tolerance With over 200 nationalities coexisting within its borders, our nation has not only embraced diversity but has actively championed it as a source of strength. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum once stated, “The future belongs to those who can most effectively manage and embrace diversity” This vision is deeply embedded in the fabric of our society, as seen in the establishment of the UAE’s Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence
Tolerance is more than passive acceptance it is an active pursuit of understanding, empathy, and respect. At our school, we embody these values every day. With students and teachers from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, we learn not just from textbooks but from each other’s cultures, perspectives, and traditions We work together, support one another, and grow as a community that thrives on mutual respect Our differences do not divide us they enrich us When we respect one another we pave the way for a more just and prosperous future.
On this occasion, let us not only celebrate tolerance in words but embody it in our actions Let us listen more, judge less, and embrace the diversity that makes us stronger In doing so, we uphold the very values that define our nation and shape a world where respect and harmony prevail
