We Need to Come Together to Power the Possible

Get more involved with NAIFA and be part of our remarkable transition into 2021.

s I took the position of national president of NAIFA this year, I had one focus: to speed up the modernization of the association.

At that time, we were firmly on the path of transformation, but I could easily see that we needed faster adoption of our new programs and use of technology. Little did I know that a pandemic would ensue, which would ask NAIFA to accelerate its pace of change by not just months, but by years.

What we have accomplished in 2020 is remarkable: A 130-year-old organization was asked to completely restructure its chapter model while adopting a “One NAIFA” mentality, and it succeeded.

The dedication of our volunteer leaders and the hours of time dedicated to the modernization of NAIFA are not just appreciated, but applauded, as well. Yet, many members are still unaware of how much has changed at NAIFA and the opportunities that the new NAIFA now affords.

GET TO KNOW THE NEW NAIFA

This special edition is an opportunity for you to explore the new NAIFA. Get to know the new programs that we offer, explore our Centers of Excellence, and catch up on all of our recent advocacy wins as we fought for producers and Main Street Americans.

For the many members who have returned to us this year, welcome home. For those members who continue to loyally belong to their professional association, thank you. And to those prospective members who are wondering what NAIFA is all about, come talk to us. We would love to invite you to join.

Staying in business 130 years is a true accomplishment in any industry, but staying relevant as a professional association is a labor of love. We have lasted throughout the years because of our ability to adapt to the environment and to the social and political climate. Our willingness

to adapt to the changes on Main Street USA and learn how to better serve a changing clientele is our greatest strength. We are committed to continuous change and to bringing you the new educational programs and inspiration you need to modernize your own practices and stay current with the changing needs of your clients.

This year has been about resiliency. We have held steadfast to our mission while changing our methods. We have disrupted, upended, tweaked and rethought nearly every aspect of NAIFA to ensure that we are putting in place an agile association built to withstand change.

This year has also been a stress test of our new model, which allowed us to see in real-time if we could flex to new environmental, political and competitive pressures. We should all be proud of ourselves because we passed with flying colors!

As we move into the latter part the year, I can firmly say that my desire for speed has been met. With new technology and resources, we are now able to respond to your needs faster, communicate faster and use faster methods to get information out to you. We have adopted an agile, continuous-improvement model that puts you, the member, at the center and delivers value when, where and how you prefer to receive it.

I invite you to slow down for a moment to catch up on the speed at which NAIFA now runs. Then, I invite you to get more involved with NAIFA to be part of this remarkable transition into 2021.

Our work of transformation is not finished — we need you! We need more people who want to lead progress, and we need more energy to fuel the journey.

Now more than ever, we need to come together to power the possible.

Thanks for Your Membership!

As

Idon’t think any of us could have imagined how many challenges and opportunities 2020 would present to the world — and for NAIFA, it has been no different. COVID-19 has changed the way we all live life and has caused disruption to virtually every part of our lives — from how we do business, to how we interact with others, to how we socialize, learn and grow.

While 2020 has proven to be exceptionally challenging, it has also given each of us a chance to reflect on what’s important and find ways to innovatively do our work, serve our clients and go about life.

As the professional association for the insurance and financial services industry, NAIFA has been there for you, doing what we do best — working tirelessly to be of value to you, your team and Main Street Americans.

ADJUSTING TO THE “NEW NORMAL”

I’m proud to see how much NAIFA and our members have nimbly adjusted to the “new normal” of life. We banded together and used new technologies to gather virtually. We held a series of Town Hall meetings where thousands of participants joined us as NAIFA became the go-to association for providing clarity during the confusion of shelter-in-place orders and stimulus packages. We quickly put materials together to help our legislators provide trusted resources for consumers who found themselves under new threats of identity fraud and cybersecurity scams.

We couldn’t hold our legislative fly-in on Capitol Hill; so, we brought our advocacy program to our members directly through our NAIFA Nation: Impact Week virtual conference.

This isn’t the first time that NAIFA has been tested through its 130 years of existence, but it is the first time that we’ve had to learn to lobby from the living room and meet with Senators and members of Congress via Zoom!

RE-INVENTING NAIFA

Since our new bylaws went into effect on January 1, 2019, change has been our constant. As part of our transformation and modernization, we underwent a rebrand. How appropriate that the tagline we adopted before the pandemic hit was “Together We Can Take on Anything.” This year has shown the power of belonging to the industry’s premier professional organization, one that can flex to the moment and rally together during challenging times while never losing sight of its mission.

NAIFA’s culture of belonging — of constantly stepping up and doing what’s right for the profession and for those we serve — is what makes NAIFA great. We have become an even stronger association through this period, with many former members returning to our fold with renewed pride and commitment.

To commemorate our 130th anniversary, we have prepared this issue to say thank you for your membership and invite you to commit to ensuring that NAIFA is around for another 130 years.

To do this, we need to invite new generations of advisors into NAIFA and educate more companies on the benefits of supporting NAIFA. Together, we can ensure that NAIFA is the professional home for generations of insurance agents and financial advisors to come.

Happy Anniversary, NAIFA!

This Special Edition of Advisor Today showcases some of NAIFA’s most recent accomplishments as it celebrates 130 years of excellence in helping its members succeed.

The oldest and largest professional association in the insurance field, NAIFA was founded on June 18, 1890, in Boston as the National Association of Life Underwriters. Thirty years ago, NAIFA celebrated 100 years of industry leadership by publishing the highly acclaimed book, Voices from the Field.

Over the years, NAIFA has re-invented itself to meet the changing needs of its members and the markets they serve. In 2018, NAIFA members voted to restructure the association to move from a federated model of 600-plus legal and financial entities to a new organizational model of one national office, 53 state and territorial chapters, and 30 local chapters. The new model went into effect on January 1, 2019, and empowered NAIFA to reinvent itself.

This Special Edition of Advisor Today provides an overview of how NAIFA is keeping its Membership Promise to advocate, educate and differentiate. We highlight our advocacy work at the federal, interstate and state levels; our thought leadership activities; and the opportunities you have to differentiate yourself through volunteer leadership.

THE SEVEN HABITS OF NAIFA CITIZENS

What binds us together is our desire for continuous improvement and self-excellence.

In a time of disruption and dichotomous viewpoints, there is a natural tendency to want to identify a unifying force to bind us together. For NAIFA, this has never been truer. As we welcome five generations of producers into the industry, we are not only more diverse than ever, but more homogeneous, as well.

8 ADVISOR TODAY
FEATURE
SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ LEIGH TRAIL

What binds us together? What is the same throughout NAIFA Nation? It is not our ages, our races or our ethnicities — it is our desire for continuous improvement and self-excellence. NAIFA members have the same DNA, whether they reside in rural or urban areas, manage big practices or single shingle — the DNA we share is to care.

We call these commonalities and their practice the “NAIFA Way” and focus our new members’ attention on the activities they need to undertake to be considered good “NAIFA Citizens.” When we look at our top producers, we notice they share a common profile, which we are now sharing with all new members to fast-track them on their path to success.

NAIFA Citizens are dedicated members who take pride in belonging to an association that has been at the forefront of the financial services industry for 130 years. While they work in different markets, specialize in a wide range of products, and provide a broad array of services, all of them share these seven key habits:

1. NAIFA Citizens believe in the power of NAIFA’s political advocacy to secure a favorable business climate for agents, advisors and the clients they serve. NAIFA is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to protecting the insurance and financial services industry from harmful legislation and regulation. Since its inception 130 years ago, the association has positively influenced hundreds of laws and pieces of regulation, which made it less cumbersome and onerous for NAIFA members to secure their clients’ financial futures.

2. NAIFA Citizens adhere to the NAIFA Code of Ethics, which demands that the best interests of clients come first. The financial advisory practice is a profession that demands high ethical standards from its members, governed by a mandate to always put the clients’ interests first. NAIFA Citizens live by this mandate day in and day out as they work to help keep families intact and with hope, no matter the financial challenges they face.

3. NAIFA Citizens believe in a culture of belonging . A belief in this culture empowers them to combine their

strengths, network with peers and be part of something that is greater than themselves. This culture of belonging is becoming increasingly important in today’s uncertain world because it gives many people the feeling that they have a community to turn to in good times and in bad.

4. NAIFA Citizens believe in continuous education and certification. Most NAIFA Citizens take time from their busy schedules to pursue industry designations and certifications like the LUTCF designation and the LACP certification because they know that informed advisors are best equipped to serve their clients and guide them on the path to financial security.

In addition to NAIFA’s Leadership in Life Institute (LILI), NAIFA Citizens take full advantage of a plethora of NAIFA educational programs. These include:

• NAIFA Big Ideas Webinars

• NAIFA Live. National Monthly Membership Meeting featuring top speakers with sales ideas.

• The NAIFA Centers of Excellence Content and event hubs focused on personal development, practice management and specialty areas such as long-term care.

• NAIFA’s Performance + Purpose Conference. This premier conference allows attendees to learn from experts and peers. It challenges their frame of reference, incites their curiosity and motivates them to perform at higher levels of success. Because of socialdistancing rules caused by COVID19, this year’s P+P will be virtual. For registration information, please visit conference.naifa.org.

• NAIFA’s Advisor Today. NAIFA Citizens frequently turn to Advisor Today magazine for the best practices, sales ideas and cutting-edge strategies they need to enhance the financial performance of their practices.

5. NAIFA Citizens give generously of their time and talent to NAIFA . The success of NAIFA is made possible by the work of hundreds of NAIFA leaders and volunteers who serve on committees, boards, focus groups and task forces. These

dedicated NAIFA Citizens share their expertise willingly and mentor those in need of guidance and direction. They have accepted the responsibilities of leadership and service, and bring to their positions a sense of personal pride.

6. NAIFA Citizens are active in their communities. Spend some time with NAIFA Citizens and you will quickly discover the huge amount of time they spend volunteering in their communities and making meaningful contributions to neighborhoods, schools, civic associations and faith-based organizations. Much of what they do goes uncompensated; yet, their services provide immeasurable value in the form of peace of mind, promises kept and dreams fulfilled.

7. NAIFA Citizens represent the interests of Main Street USA . According to a recent survey, nine out of 10 NAIFA members serve middle-income clients, and almost half serve at least some lower-income clients. NAIFA Citizens are in communities across the country, striving to ensure financial security and prosperity for friends and neighbors, local families and small-business owners. They understand the financial challenges Main Street Americans face, know where gaps in their level of financial literacy exist, and provide solutions to close those gaps.

NAIFA members who possess these seven habits are among the most successful agents and advisors in the industry. By giving their time and talent to the association, they are gaining the strategies and leadership skills they need to build fulfilling and rewarding careers.

Delivering on NAIFA’s Membership Promise

Since its inception, NAIFA has made it a top priority to provide an exceptional member experience for all advisors and agents who choose to become members of the association. NAIFA carries out this critical mission by focusing on three key areas: Advocate, Educate and Differentiate. This article highlights some of NAIFA’s most recent advocacy efforts.

NAIFA Advocacy Creates a Favorable Business Climate for You

During NAIFA’s Town Hall Meeting that the association hosted to celebrate its 130th anniversary, NAIFA Senior Vice President of Government Relations Diane Boyle shared a NAIFA advocacy update with attendees.

NAIFA’s advocacy teams at the home office and in every state capital can quickly address legislative and regulatory issues whenever and wherever they arise. NAIFA is the only insurance and financial services membership association that advocates on the national, state and interstate levels, she said.

NAIFA ADVOCACY AT WORK FOR YOU

Boyle then gave a quick rundown of some of NAIFA’s advocacy efforts so far this year:

• Before COVID-19 shutdowns, NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux, CAE, testified at a Massachusetts hearing on the state’s proposed fiduciary rule for financial professionals that helped reshape the regulation.

• NAIFA gave input to a new NAIC annuity sales model that aligns with the SEC’s Regulation Best Interest and then was instrumental in seeing the model adopted in Arizona and Iowa.

13 ANNIVERSARY EDITION
ADVOCATE
Diane Boyle

• When the COVID-19 outbreak began impacting the nation, NAIFA worked with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to ensure that insurance and financial professionals were designated as essential infrastructure workers.

• NAIFA then worked with Congress to advocate on behalf of small businesses as lawmakers considered the COVID-19 economic relief and recovery legislation.

• New Hampshire securities regulators publicly thanked NAIFA for supporting senior-protection measures.

• NAIFA worked with the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) to defeat a proposal in Colorado that would have increased taxes on consumers who benefit from annuity products.

NAIFA IS THE ADVOCACY VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY

“NAIFA’s advocacy strength is rooted in our geographical diversity,” Boyle said. NAIFA is stronger because there are NAIFA members in every congressional district around the country.

When COVID-19 forced NAIFA to convert its May Congressional Conference into a virtual event this year, some 5,000 financial professionals, including members and non-members from all 50 states, participated. They took part in sessions that showed them how to be better advocates and how to connect with their lawmakers in spite of COVID-19 restrictions.

NAIFA also serves as the advocacy representative for many of its sister organizations, she added. These include the Asian American Insurance and Financial Professionals Association, the Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies, the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies, the National African American Insurance Association, the Society of Financial Services Professionals and Women in Insurance and Financial Services. “When

we go to the Hill, and when we are working at the state level,” Boyle said, “we bring the diversity of these groups with us.”

Members of these associations also have access to NAIFA’s advocacy materials, receive legislative briefings and can participate in events like NAIFA’s Congressional Conference and advocacy webinars.

NAIFA also has a strong advocacy partnership with ACLI, which represents the most influential companies in the industry. NAIFA and ACLI have coordinated for many years on state and federal issues where NAIFA members’ interests overlap with those of ACLI’s members. More recently, the two organizations signed a formal state-advocacy partnership to combine efforts and resources on crucial issues in key states.

WORKING FOR RETIREMENT SAVERS DURING COVID-19

NAIFA urged Congress to give Americans who are financially impacted by the pandemic greater flexibility to access retirement savings without incurring penalties. This became part of early federal COVID19 economic relief legislation.

Now, NAIFA is working with our allies at the Insured Retirement Institute to support IRI’s five-point plan to help workers reverse the harmful impacts COVID-19 has had on their retirement savings. NAIFA has been a part of more than 100 virtual Capitol Hill meetings, Boyle said, to ensure that members of Congress understand how the COVID-19 outbreak has affected people planning for retirement and how legislation is needed to help them in the economic recovery.

NAIFA’s advocacy is only as strong as its members, Boyle said. They are the ones who ensure we represent every congressional district and provide the Main Street USA voice for our industry.

Advocacy provides numerous opportunities for NAIFA members to get involved and make a difference, Boyle added. They can be a part of NAIFA’s grassroots army, become a key contact for a state or federal lawmaker, or contribute to NAIFA’s political action committee.

If you would like to get involved in NAIFA’s advocacy efforts, please visit www.naifa.org/advocate.

Get Involved in NAIFA Advocacy

Building relationships with elected officials is vital to our success.

For 130 years, NAIFA has built a reputation as the premier advocacy association for insurance and financial advisors in Washington, D.C., and in all 50 states. This is because of members who go above and beyond the call of duty to engage in advocacy. Now, more than ever, NAIFA needs you to get involved and stay involved.

NAIFA has members in every congressional district in the country, and many of them have taken the time to get to know their elected officials and advocate on behalf of the financial services industry. These dedicated members have established trust with their representatives, and that trust is extremely important for influencing positive policy outcomes.

These relationships constitute the cornerstone of our advocacy strategy. Every day, elected officials make decisions that impact millions of lives. As a result, elected officials are constantly meeting with lobbyists, interest groups, constituents — you name it.

However, of all the people our representatives meet with, constituents are by far the most influential, and it is for this reason that NAIFA is so successful.

While lobbyists are skilled in influencing our desired policy outcomes, arranging a meeting with knowledgeable, trustworthy constituents to get representatives to see our side of the issues is a proven method for bringing wavering representatives to our side.

Building a relationship with an elected official is much like building a relationship with a prospective client — it requires work, but there are benefits, both professional and personal, that come from putting the time in.

Spending some time on NAIFA advocacy is fun, engaging and rewarding. So, if you would like to start getting to know your representatives or if you already have a relationship, please visit the Advocacy Action Center at naifa.org/advocate.

EDUCATE AND DIFFERENTIATE

DIFFERENTIATE

In addition to these educational offerings, NAIFA has first-rate programs that give members a competitive edge in today’s crowded market. The purpose of Differentiate in NAIFA’s Membership Promise is to empower members to use NAIFA as a platform to leverage their brand. Differentiate is all about a NAIFA member using NAIFA to get published, become a speaker or become a top volunteer leader.

NAIFA has created a designation and a certification — the LUTCF and the LACP — to help you stand out in today’s highly competitive market and empower you to serve your clients more effectively.

NAIFA’S LACP

NAIFA developed the Life and Annuity Certified Professional (LACP) certification based on feedback from NAIFA members and others in the industry who saw a need for an accredited certification to distinguish extraordinary life insurance and annuities practitioners.

As an industry leader in education and professional development and with growing consumer outreach, NAIFA is well-positioned to advance the LACP as a standard for the industry.

“Having the LACP next to your name tells clients and industry insiders you are a successful advisor, dedicated to your career and committed to providing knowledgeable, ethical client service,” said NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux, CAE. “It differentiates you in a crowded marketplace and can be a meaningful part of your personal brand.”

More than 90% of insurance and financial professionals find value in industry certifications and designations, according to a recent NAIFA survey, with 43% finding them “very valuable.” More than three-quarters expressed some interest in obtaining additional professional designations and certifications.

WHY MEMBERS VALUE THE LACP

Reasons participants gave for valuing certifications like the LACP include:

• “They give you credibility with clients and show your desire to learn.”

• “In addition to contributing to continued education, they are a ‘separator’ in a competitive industry.”

• They provide “credibility with other professionals, including lawyers and CPAs.”

• They “communicate a commitment to excellence.”

The LACP is accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies and is recognized as such on the FINRA website.

NAIFA has obtained explicit approval from companies and broker-dealers for their affiliated producers to use the LACP certification.

These organizations include:

Cambridge Investment Research

Country Financial

FSC Securities

Guardian

Kansas City Life

The Leaders Group

MassMutual

Nationwide

New York Life

Principal

Royal Alliance

SagePoint

Western & Southern Life

Woodbury Financial

“Life and annuity products are the foundation for plans protecting the financial security of tens of millions of American families,” Mayeux added. “These products can be complicated, but the LACP lets consumers know they are working with a professional they can trust and who has the experience and understanding to help them meet their financial goals.”

Learn more about the LACP certification at tdc.naifa.org/lacp today, and start making plans to earn this ultimate mark of distinction.

NAIFA’S CONSUMER-FACING SITE

In its ongoing efforts to help you stand out from other advisors, NAIFA has also created a consumer-facing website at www.financialsecurity.org.

In addition to featuring content designed to enhance the financial-literacy levels of consumers, the site has a Find a NAIFA Member feature, which

helps consumers locate a NAIFA member near them.

The site is three-pronged. It aims to:

1) Increase financial literacy of American consumers,

2) Increase financial security through access to a NAIFA advisor,

3) Increase awareness of financial services as a career option for Americans.

For information on how you can provide content for this site and make it an even better resource for you and your clients, please visit us at www.financialsecurity.org.

NAIFA Members Proudly Serve Main Street USA

As a Main Street advisor, you have a valuable asset this election year because you have a trusted relationship with an important segment of the population — Main Street USA consumers.

ccording to the most recent NAIFA survey, almost half of NAIFA members say that the typical annual household income of their clients falls between $50,000 and $100,000, and 4% say that their typical client earns less than $50,000 a year.

As a NAIFA member, the work you do for this group of Main Street USA consumers who form the backbone of the American society is priceless. You help them plan for the expected and the unexpected; you work with them to identify ways to save money; and most importantly, you build trusted relationships with them.

NAIFA needs more advisors like you to continue your work on Main Street USA and to spread the word about the good that you do protecting the industry and securing sound financial futures for millions of Americans.

And NAIFA needs you to lend your voice as we work with lawmakers to protect the industry. Your voice is crucial because as a Main Street USA advisor and you have a unique lens on the local economy, an area that interests many legislators.

You know the pulse of Main Street residents, and as a Main Street USA advisor, you can talk about the direct effects of government policies on local consumers in districts back home.

And since you are a constituent, congressional offices’ contacts with you usually turn into action items for congressional staff, and these action items are what produce results.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

This is why it is important that in this election year that you not only get involved in NAIFA, but you also spread the word about the good that you and NAIFA are doing to protect Main Street Americans.

Contact us today at governmentrelations@naifa.org and find out how you can lend your voice to NAIFA’s efforts to protect you — and the clients you serve.

COVID-19 has made it more critical to come together and empower each other’s growth — and P+P will help you do just that.

From its inception in 1890 as the National Association of Life Underwriters (NALU), NAIFA has undergone a series of transforma

tions that have given the association a leadership position in the financial services industry.

Here are some of the steps that NAIFA took on its way to the top:

1890

In 1890, the National Association of Life Underwriters (NALU) was created in Boston, Massachusetts.

1927

In 1927, the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) was formed at the NALU convention in Memphis, Tennessee, as a forum for leading producers.

1951

In 1951, NALU created a conference, General Agents and Managers Association (GAMA), to enhance the quality and capability of the insurance industry’s field management.

1956

NAIFA has been committed to improving the quality of life for Americans and addressing social problems since 1956, when the association first started developing community service programs.

NAIFA chapters and members have volunteered in social programs for health care, homelessness, youth education, AIDS awareness, drug/alcohol awareness, senior citizens and U.S. crisis relief efforts. Between 1981 and 1989, NAIFA public service programs were honored six times by the Reagan and Bush administrations’ Private Initiatives Program.

1957

In 1957, NALU formed the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) to support advanced life insurance underwriters and agents engaged in complex areas of life insurance such as business continuation planning, estate planning, retirement planning, deferred compensation and employee benefits planning.

1990

In 1990, a third conference of NALU, the Association of Health Insurance Agents (AHIA), was formed to sustain and enhance the business environment for health insurance agents and to improve the financing and delivery of health care in the United States.

1999

On Sept. 29, 1999, National Council delegates voted to change the association’s name from the National Association of Life Underwriters to National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

2000

In May 2000, NAIFA moved into its new headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia, after 40 years at 1922 F St., N.W., Washington, D.C.

2018

In May 2018, NAIFA members voted to adopt a new set of bylaws that created a national association with 53 state and territorial chapters and a national association with state, territorial and local chapters.

2019

On Jan. 1, 2019, the new bylaws went into effect.
