“DETROIT ‘67” AT DETROIT PUBLIC THEATRE - JUNE 3RD The Detroit Public Theatre (DPT) produces nationally recognized plays and programs with world-class writers, directors, actors, and designers in the heart of Midtown Detroit’s thriving cultural district. The play “Detroit ‘67” sits in the summer of 1967, and the songs of Motown are breaking records and breaking barriers. Chelle and her brother, Lank, are running an unlicensed after-hours joint out of their basement— risky business—especially during a brutal police crackdown that has sparked unrest throughout the city. When Lank offers refuge to a mysterious stranger, he and Chelle clash. Pentup emotions erupt, and they must navigate the chaos both outside and within. Broadway Playwright Dominique Morisseau is an alumna of The Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, and has developed work at Sundance Lab, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference. Awards include: Obie Awards, Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship, and the MacArthur Genius Grant Fellowship.
