The play “Detroit ‘67” sits in the summer of 1967, and the songs of Motown are breaking records and breaking barriers . Chelle and her brother, Lank, are running an unlicensed after-hours joint out of their basement— risky business—especially during a brutal police crackdown that has sparked unrest throughout the city . When Lank offers refuge to a mysterious stranger, he and Chelle clash . Pentup emotions erupt, and they must navigate the chaos both outside and within . Broadway Playwright Dominique Morisseau is an alumna of The Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, and has developed work at Sundance Lab, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference . Awards include: Obie Awards, Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship, and the MacArthur Genius Grant Fellowship .
