PROCESS BOOK DESIGN 1

This assignment was completed with the help of three other design students, Kiyomi Engime, Laamiah Sayyed, and Alice Dvorak. This assignment was to create a site intervention that symbolizes togetherness. and the connections between people, people and nature, and the natural and built world. The heart became the symbol of the connection between people, the use of leaves showcases the connection between humans and nature, and having this all in between two trees shows the connection of the natural and built world. In addition, the heart was introduced as a photo prop to further incorporate togetherness into the design.
The objective of this assignment was to develop a further understanding of sections, plans, and elevations, as well as the contrast between solid and void. This understanding is developed through the re-creation of an everyday object in various ways, such as using horizontal and vertical sections, an “egg carton” approach, and exploring the form using an alternate material.
The objective of this assignment was to explore and learn how color, pattern, and texture are all influential on design. This is all explored through experimentation with pattern through the use of stamps, allowing for a wide array of designs, with color and how certain colors work well together and others don’t, and incorporating this with pattern as well, and with exploring texture and how it can be translated differently with color.
The objective of this project was to become further familiarized with solid and void, as well as experiment and learn how to translate designs from two dimensions to three dimensions.
The objective of this project was to further explore the translations of two dimensional designs into three dimensions, as well as experiment with paper as the main material, using various methods to obtain various outcomes and effects with the paper.
In relation to project 5a, the objective of this project was to experiment with the translation and development of ideas. This project is inspired by a section of the bas relief created in the last portion of this project.
The objective of this project was to explore spatial complexities, and become familiar working with scale. Adding on to the previous project, which was used as the site for this assignment, this projects objective allowed exploration on how to create spaces, building on a preexisting site.
This assignment was completed with the help of two other designs students, Hannah Powell, and Sean Christenson. The objective of this presentation was to research a famous designer, in this case Ying Gao, learn about their work, and connect it back to the work completed in this class, and design fields. In addition, her impact on the design world, and how she has inspired others was also researched.
The goal of this on going project was to showcase an improvement in craft, drawing, and experience throughout the semester, as well as introduce the use of new materials.
Throughout this semester, I have experienced many pivotal learning points and gained many skills. Over the course of most projects, in specific projects 2, 4, and 6, I have learned essential skills in regard to the process of putting together each one, such as the importance of measure twice, cut once, the importance of using a triangle or t-square to make sure all corners sit at 90 degrees when needed, and the importance of keeping a sharp blade. In addition, I have learned many skills in regard to drawing and diagramming. A few habits that I have made include sketching and documenting my thought process, focusing on line weights and how it effects what I’m drawing, and the importance of using tools, such as straight edges and circle templates. These skills have been most helpful during the completion of projects 3 and 02. Lastly, I have gained insight on how to present projects effectively. I have learned the appropriate length of what a presentation should be, how to pin up my work in an organized way, and how to photograph and show off my work. In the end, all of these skills and habits I have gained and learned through design 1 have proven to be highly valuable, and will continue to be throughout my future years as a design student.
