HISTORY ASSOCIATION APRIL MEETING About 45 people, including several visitors, attended the Association’s Annual General Meeting on 20 April. The business was dealt with swiftly. All the committee members were re-elected and there was an invitation for other people to join it at a later date. The Treasurer gave a comprehensive account of our finances and a “Children and Vulnerable Adults policy” was adopted. Nick Allen drew our attention to the possibility of potential new members from the various housing estates being developed around the village. Following a short break for refreshments the Chairman Barry Davis gave us a presentation on Adderbury Bells and Bellringing. Speaking from personal experience, as a former captain of the local band and now vice chairman of the Banbury Branch of the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers, he outlined the history of Adderbury’s bells and the ringers from the fifteenth century through to the present day, with additional related information about the church clock and carillon. Trevor Trivett, the current tower captain, extended a welcome to members to visit the tower and learn more. Jean Davis ADDERBURY HISTORY ASSOCIATION OPEN DAY Don’t forget we are holding an Open Day on Saturday 18 July in the Institute from 10.00 am - 4.00 pm. Book this date now. This is your opportunity to research your family tree, solve local history mysteries, explore the village and see how the past and present are reflected in Adderbury’s buildings, roads and spaces. Many of our resources and archives will be on display and may be in use on the day within the events taking place. Admission will be free and refreshments will be available. A detailed programme will appear in July’s Contact and on village noticeboards. Barry Davis CHILDREN'S SOCIETY COLLECTION FOR CHILDREN Many thanks to all the Collectors and those who donated to help us raise £600 for The Children's Society. The Children's Society works to help this country's most disadvantaged children and teenagers. Many thanks, Colin Ewles

EVERGREENS On 8 April 8 members were able to enjoy an excellent at lunch much enjoyed by all. In fact they have asked for committee to arrange a return visit. Our A.G.M. on the 22nd was well attended. Our chairman Dot Hardy opened the meeting with a summary of the past years program, Secretary Rhoda Woodward said that she hoped that members would enjoy the coming season. She said she had applied for grants but had not so far had any results. She thanked Dot for finding a new bus company with a smaller coach and not quite so expensive. The Treasurer also distributed balance sheets and explained the clubs present finances. The present committee was voted en-bloc, although we do still need another committee member. Dot Hardy was voted as chairman and agreed to stand again, likewise Pat Chainey as treasurer and Rhoda Woodward as secretary. Over 20 members's paid their subscriptions and were given a colorful copy of our future years events. ORDINARY PEOPLE INTERESTING LIVES OPIL is a local charity that would like to establish a community of older people who help look out for each other. As we get older we all need a bit of help sometimes but still have many unused skills that could help other people. It’s this give and take that is the driving force behind OPIL’s desire to establish a local support community. To make this happen we need to know what you would like such an organisation to provide, how it should work, what you need and what you can do to assist others. This could be anything from:  Accompanying someone to an appointment  Calling or visiting someone who is feeling unwell or is housebound  Helping with home tasks, DIY, transport, gardening, shopping etc  Technology assistance, setting up printers, linking to Skype etc  Anything and everything else you can think of We see it as giving you the opportunity to make friends, make use of all your life skills, have fun and get the help that you need. As well as being able to help others, you’ll be building a local community that will provide you with help when you need it. If you think that you might be interested in getting involved in helping us shape this new venture or becoming a member / volunteer then please contact us for more information at: shirley@opil.org or telephone: 07966 134 733 to speak to Shirley Haynes. ADDERBURY BELLS REMEMBER THE FALLEN A Quarter Peal of Grandsire Doubles was rung half muffled on Wednesday 6 May to commemorate the death in action of Leading Seaman William Henry Gardiner one hundred years ago. This is the second in the series of Quarter Peals being rung at Adderbury to mark the deaths of Adderbury men who died in WW1 and are listed on the Adderbury War memorial. William Gardiner had joined the Royal Navy in 1909 and at the time of his death was in the Hood Battalion of the Royal Marines and died at Gallipoli. Although he was born in Deddington his home in later years was in The Parish at Adderbury which was situated just below the churchyard. Another Quarter Peal in this series, probably of Plain Bob Doubles, will be rung on or near 30 June this year to commemorate the death of Private William st Henry Roberts of 1 Battalion, Oxon and Bucks Light Infantry. As a member of th 17 Brigade, 6 (Poona) Division, William Roberts is listed as having died from natural causes whilst serving in India. Trevor Trivett

We were at Church House for our May Resolutions evening when we had good discussions on OFWI 2015-16 Resolution “Failing to Care,” after which we enjoyed a Swishing Event with members bringing in accessories items and choosing “new” ones on display. We had an excellent evening with much member involvement, a glass of wine, lovely cakes, and tea/coffee. We now have 200 photo entries for our 2016 Calendar Competition and our chosen 48 will be on display at Party in the Park --- where we will have our homemade cakes and tea/coffee stall on Saturday 20 June; in the library and at various other functions, for everybody to vote for their favourite photos for our lovely calendar. We shall be at the School Fete on Saturday 13 June where our tombola stall will present our filled and wrapped jam jars --- full of lovely surprises. On 25 June a Farm Visit with supper is planned. In May our Walking Group went to Ditchley Park to view the bluebells; our Reading Group read "Some Luck" by Jane Smiley; our Needlecraft Group met; and there was an evening visit to Sulgrave Manor New members are always most welcome at The Institute on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm where they are assured of an enthusiastic reception. Further details may be found on our website --- www.adderburywi.co.uk --- or by email --- adderburywi@gmail.com --- or find us on FaceBook via their search engine for Adderbury & District WI to see our page. PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY At last month’s meeting, member Randall Miles ARPS AFIAP gave a presentation on “The Maasai Mara, Part One.” Watch this space for a better part two. Introducing his presentation, Randall explained that the Maasai Mara National Reserve comprises approximately 550 square miles located in Kenya, adjoining Tanzania’s larger Serengeti National Reserve. The Maasai Mara contains the bigest concentration of lions, leopards and cheetahs in Africa, and is also famous for the bi-annual Great Migration of zebra, Thomson gazelle and wildebeest to and from the Serengetti. While most visitors spend overnight outside the Reserve, Randall was fortunate in being able to sleep in tents within the Reserve, being looked after by the Maasai people themselves. A great asset for wildlife photography, but, as he confessed, a somewhat alarming experience initially to be in such close proximity to the animals. Following this introduction, Randall then showed a large number of animal prints taken during his safaris on the ubiquitous Land Rover, starting early in the morning and finishing late evening. These included sightings of the ‘big cats,’ taken mostly at close quarters resting in the shade of Acacia trees, together with elephants, buffalos and rhinoceros. He was also fortunate to witness the start of the Migration, and showed photographs of the crossing of the Mara River with predators lying in wait. A most interesting and absorbing presentation by an accomplished photographer, accompanied by a great deal of humour, which was much appreciated by his audience. The presentation’s intriguing title suggests that another will be forthcoming soon. The next meeting of the Society will be an outdoor photo-shoot for members in the grounds of Blenheim Palace, starting at 7.30 pm in the Black Prince PH at Woodstock. Then, on 17 June, there is a workshop on ‘Digital processing and black and white photography,’ and on 1 July it is hoped that Craig Churchill will give a presentation on aspects wildlife photography. Includes children’s packed tea when pre-booked, children must be accompanied by an adult, cost £4 including food, accompanying adults free. What We Did On Our Holiday at 8.00 pm (doors open 7.30 pm) (2014, dir. Trish Fennell, Chairman CHERWELL BACKS FOOD SAFETY WEEK Chicken can cause food poisoning, traced to Campylobacter - a germ found mostly on raw chicken. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it on food. At its worst, campylobacter can kill or paralyse you. "By taking some very simple precautions and being that bit more careful when handling chicken we can make sure incidents of food poisoning can be greatly reduced." The FSA is asking everyone to:  bag and store raw chicken separately from other food, covered and chilled on the bottom shelf of the fridge  not wash raw chicken, as it splashes germs about  wash everything that’s touched raw chicken in soap and hot water --- your hands and utensils  check chicken is cooked properly - make sure there is no pink meat, that it's steaming hot and that the juices run clear
