ADDERBURY AND MILTON FEOFFEE’S CHARITY Grants are available for school leavers going onto further education, university, or apprenticeships. The criteria for students is that they must have lived in the village for three years. The deadline each year is 1 January, and grants will be awarded at the end of February, after the meeting of the Trustees. Each application will be assessed individually and confidentially by the Trustees.

The Assistance Fund is a long-established fund within the Feoffee Charity. It is there to help when times are hard. We cover all age groups, young and old, and can offer help to all who have lived in the village for a period of three years or more. To apply for help, please request a form from: S. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM The Adderbury & Milton Branch of The Royal British Legion will be holding its usual Remembrance Service in St. Mary’s Church on Sunday 12 November at 3.00 pm.

Please support this annual occasion. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all ex-service personnel and to the public, to include all village groups and organisations, e.g., Scouts, Guides, etc. Those wishing to join in the parade, all will muster outside the Church Lych Gate at 2.45 pm.

Our RBL AGM will be held on Thursday 16 November at 2.00 pm at the Adderbury Bowls Club. We welcome any ex-service personnel or otherwise to come along and join us. Come and see who we are and what we do. All welcome.

Thanks again, Regards, Jean Moore ADDERBURY CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2017 We are running the Adderbury Christmas Tree Festival again this year and would like to invite local businesses to join those already sponsoring the event: Banbury Litho, Chiltern Railways, Dematic, Edd Frost & Daughters, Humphris Funerals, and The Heritage Fruit Tree Company.

This year’s Festival will be raising funds to restore our historic church tower. The church tower is a symbol of Adderbury and a well-known Oxfordshire landmark.

We are raising the £400,000 needed for restoration with events, donations, grants, and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Festival will be held 8 - 10 December 2017 with refreshments and live music.

With your help, we hope to have St Mary’s Church filled with 40 decorated living Christmas trees, aiming to again attract over 2,000 visitors over the Festival weekend.

FOSMA We continue to be busy with our fund raising, and I’m delighted to tell you that Jazz in the Garden made £1010, and the Bellringers’ Putting Competition and BBQ raised £447. Both events were blessed with fine weather and were thoroughly enjoyable and convivial gatherings. Thanks to Tim and Karen Bestwick for lending us their garden for the jazz and also to Dave Stansfield for allowing us to step up to the challenge of his tricky putting course!

Up and coming dates for your diaries are: 11 October – AGM at 7.30 pm in Church House 12 October – Outing to the Bodleian Library. This is an extensive tour including the Divinity School starting at 2.00 pm until 4.30 pm and includes afternoon tea.

Trish Fennell, Chairman ADDERBURY PARISH COUNCIL WILD FLOWERS AT THE RISE Our Grow Wild seed wild flower area at The Rise has continued to bloom throughout the summer, and our enthusiastic team have done their very best to maintain site viability through a long, hot summer. Pruning of faded plant material has continued alongside reseeding and weeding, and we delighted in our Viper’s bugloss and cornflower blooms, as did the many bees crowding over our plants. Summer vacations held up our work for a short while, but now we are getting back on track with our weekly work sessions. We still have poppies, cornflowers, yarrow, campion, and Viper’s Bugloss blooms in September to brighten the last of summer’s days. New seedings will have been undertaken by the end of September to ensure more beautiful flowerings for 2018.

THE ANNUAL GARDEN PARTY The Annual Garden Party was a huge success this year. The weather forecast warned us of thunderstorms in the afternoon --- which indeed happened --- so we had to hold it in the church, sadly missing out on the beautiful garden of The Manor House.

Despite all this, the event was very successful, and, as always, the folk of Adderbury turned out and supported us and helped to raise an astonishing £1,032.55 for St. Mary's Church.

It was a wonderful afternoon bringing the community together, and the children just loved the Punch and Judy Show.

My special thanks must go to the team of workers manning the stalls, serving and making delicious cakes for the teas, and those setting it all up.

ADDERBURY & DISTRICT WI Our Speaker in September was Vania Martins who gave a talk about Women’s Refuges and how so many women live in fear and need to get out of their homes for protection. We learnt about the different skills needed by the support team, including, legal, mental, and socialising.

On 2 September we attended the Fun Day for KHH organised by Tony at the Coach and Horses. It was a sunny day, and our winner of the Treasure was Val Scarff who successfully picked square no 26 – The Green!!!

Our walking group had a very short walk round the beautiful grounds of Broughton Castle followed by dinner at the Saye and Sele Pub. We have a new website which is in preparation and should be released very soon.

Our wild flower areas at both KHH and Adderbury Lakes continue to thrive.

New seeding, pruning of faded material, and now seed gathering of corn chamomile, campion, viper’s bugloss and verbascum nigrum continues enthusiastically, hopefully bringing about a bright flowering season for 2018.

Our next meeting will be on 5 October at 7.30, and our speaker will be Gill Randall talking about Esoteric Healing.

New members are always welcome at The Institute on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm where they are assured of an enthusiastic reception.

Bourton-on-the-Water was visited 12 July. Lovely weather was enjoyed by all. On 26 July, the film The Glen Miller Story was shown. It was very interesting, and members enjoyed it.

Catherine, an Occupational Therapist, gave a talk and exercises on how to keep our bodies and limbs supple, 13 August. We all found it very interesting and had fun doing the exercises. August 23 was a visit to Bicester Garden Centre. This is always a popular trip, and many members came. September 13 was our last trip for the year, and we visited Buckingham Garden Centre.

ADDERBURY GUIDES Camp! I like camp. For four days at Horley Scout Camp, we slept in tents and had a football, peace, and survival themed Guide camp (don’t ask me to explain the theme – I don’t know).

On our first day, the Guides put up their tents (which is slightly terrifying when you think that we actually need to sleep in these things) and then had a football themed afternoon. The Guides decorated cakes as football pitches and then competed to convince me that their cake was the best in the world. Some Guides claimed the Queen had played on it and some gave us full dramatic performances about the wonders of their cake. After tea (which the Guides cooked, of course, you have to work on these camps), we played football themed games like a football obstacle course, three-legged football races, and a load of football games which the Guides invented themselves.

Day two. We gave the Guides some ‘wild’ ingredients (like blackberries, mushrooms, hazel nuts, apples) along with normal food like rice and pasta and said ‘cook lunch’. They cooked lunch. I felt there was some slight cheating going on (‘you’re telling me that’s wild?

Pasta, egg and cheese?’). I’m also not 100% everything produced was exactly edible.

The Guides kept going ‘try ours, Emma, try it’ but I was backing away faster than a vampire encountering garlic. Anyway, they all ended up eating something, so it worked out. Also, this day was Izzy’s birthday, and her group surprised her with a card in one of the tents, and we all had cake to celebrate. In the afternoon, we had a massive water fight and powder paint fight. We ended up with wet, slightly cold, colourful Guides who for some reason all seemed extremely happy about this.

Archery day! Two of our Guides made their Guiding promise and properly joined Guides. They put the promise onto the targets and shot at it (as in aiming to keep the promise, not as in wanting to destroy it, you understand). All the Guides got to wield a bow and arrow and have a go at shooting. Some of the Guides chose to make their own table football tables out of a cardboard box and kebab sticks on this day, which came out looking amazing, I was super impressed by them! That afternoon, the Guides went out into the woods to build a survival shelter. They were really inventive! The groups were showing me around their kitchens, toilets, phone and WiFi areas (in the wild? Seriously?!) and relaxation zones. I feel they wouldn’t have lasted long in bad weather, but I can’t fault the creativity. We ended the day with a campfire where the Guides did group performances (which I’ll swear get sillier every year) and singing Guide campfire songs. That night, some of the Guides decided to ditch their tents and slept out under the stars.

One final day, and the Guides shot rifles at targets. Some of the Guides turned out to be a really good shot with them! Afterwards, the oldest Guides ran a yoga and meditation session, managing to twist their bodies into pretty impressive shapes. We then had to take down all of our tents so the Guides could go home. It was an amazing camp. We had a few moments with homesickness and friendships, but the Guides pulled together, supported each other and we all made it through and had a great time. We’re now sneakily planning next year’s camp.

Many people helped, so my thanks to the following: Sue, David, Barbara, Malcolm, Veronica, Anne, and Rosemary for their efforts and enthusiasm. Thanks to the judges for their continued support; to the exhibitors for “having a go;” and to those villagers and friends who came to view what was on offer. Hopefully some may have exhibits next year.

The judges commented that despite being down on exhibits this year, the standard was still very high. This year we had 24 adult entries producing 151 exhibits. There were only two exhibitors in the flower arranging classes, which is disappointing given that all of the village churches are regally decorated every Sunday. Domestic classes fared better, the quality was very good, and we had a few gentlemen making their mark. Phil Mansell was third overall - “Domestic God” next stop? Let us see if we can't improve on the entries next year.

The Junior Section this year was, as in recent years, full of colour. Well done Adderbury Rainbows and their leader Liz Calvert. Thirteen Rainbows (young ladies aged between five and seven) entered and produced 56 exhibits. Freya Simester won the Junior Cup and the Rainbows’ Trophy, while the Best Junior Exhibit was won by Cherry Smith. We also had our youngest ever exhibitor Faye Florent aged 3½ say that she wanted to enter a “bunch of smelly things,” so entered an exhibit in Adult Class 42 – A “Nosegay” of Herbs. The show secretary made her a special rosette.

Our Chairman, David White, welcomed everyone to the show and invited David Griffiths, Vice Chairman of the Parish Council, to present the Council's Millennium Cup for the best allotment to "The Mansells." They have won the cup for the past four years.

He then introduced Cyril Smith, Chairman of King’s Sutton Gardening Club, who then, assisted by the Show Secretary, presented the prizes. Cyril then said a few words thanking us for the invitation and stressing the importance of events like these in the lives of our villages. He was thanked by David and warmly applauded.

The Chairman then spoke of the hard work and effort by Rod Roberts, the Show Secretary, who had now organised and run thirty-two consecutive shows.

The raffle took place, after which the Show Secretary expressed his thanks firstly to the Parish Council for the grant in support of the show, secondly to the committee and those who helped on the day, and finally to those villagers and friends who came to see the produce and flowers and "eat the cakes."

Without the Parish Council grant, this year’s profit would have been too small for the work and effort it takes to put on the show and would have prompted a decision to stop. However, the grant ensured a reasonable profit, and the money will help support the club going forward. continued on page 23

ADDERBURY DEDDINGTON AND DISTRICT PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY David Boag made a welcome return on 6 September to give a talk titled “Photographing Nature More Creatively.” David has been a wildlife photographer for over 30 years, has been published in many photographic journals, and has over 20 book titles on this subject.

His unique ebullient and enthusiastic style of presentation captivated the audience’s attention from the start. He demonstrated that the use and understanding of light and shade was important. David emphasised that creativity was the key to a successful picture, one that could stand out from the thousands of other photographs. Using superb photographs of animals and birds his repeated encouragement was to think creatively and use the photographer’s intuition to produce a picture with impact. David stressed that use of telephoto lenses is not the only way to create impact. The judicious use of space around the subject can also enhance visual effect, and framing the animal in the picture imaginatively could also produce impact. Understanding the subject you are photographing is important. Examples were shown of being able to predict what the animal or bird will do next. This is often the difference between a brilliant and a mediocre picture.

The subject then moved from wildlife onto to the creativity required to present successful landscape photography. The potential possibilities of both wide-angle and telephoto lenses was then demonstrated by examples of imaginative landscape photographs. The importance of foreground detail, middle distance detail, and the far distance was demonstrated in his landscapes. This was stressed by pictures with, and without, the foreground interest to emphasise the point. The photographer’s skill in capturing the variations in weather, producing atmospheric mood was beautifully illustrated.

Emphasis was put on not being discouraged by poor weather conditions. “Make use of these conditions to your advantage and emphasise the impact of the landscape before you.” Environment creates atmosphere was the message.

David then went into the use of autofocus and the importance of knowing when and how to use the tripod. Although modern high ISO settings may discourage many from using tripods, the use of one is still beneficial. Commenting on so called “rules of photography,” stress was placed not necessarily on ignoring them, but to use that inner feeling, which many of us have, of what is good or bad in the picture. The instinctive ability to pick the right moment, regardless of what rules theorists may lay down is often key to producing pleasing pictures.

As the chairman thanked him for the presentation, and expressed the hope that it would not be long before David returned, a hearty applause from the group showed their appreciation.

However, there are concerns affecting FT at present. Firstly Brexit --- as yet, no one knows what the government will do about continuing to trade in the present way that the EU supports FT. However, the Fairtrade Foundation is putting on pressure to bring this about. Secondly, Sainsbury’s are weakening the power of farmers growing tea, by ditching the Fairtrade mark from some of their own-brand tea and replacing it with a ‘Fairly Traded’ label. They’ve decided to abandon Fairtrade and pilot their own scheme. Farmers will no longer be able to decide for themselves how to spend the money that they have earned through the Fairtrade Premium.

Please continue to buy products with the FT logo at your supermarket or from myself, a Fairtrader. If what you want is not there, ask for it. Our local school, Christopher Rawlins, is setting a good example to us in Adderbury. The pupils are all learning the principles of fair trade, and they are now on a ladder to become a Fairtrade School.

PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council met on 12 September. There were apologies from Councillors, Gill, Head and Jelfs.

The Chairman sent condolences to the family of Mike Wood, former Chairman of the PC in the 1970s, who recently passed away, and she thanked those who made donations in his memory, totalling over £400, to Adderbury Lakes.

She confirmed that the installation of the new play equipment would be started at the beginning of October 2017.

The Lakes were holding an Open Day on Saturday 16 September, and she thanked all those who were involved in the preparation of Lakes for this occasion.

The two applications for a Judicial Review submitted by Mr Nigel Davies had been refused by Judge Purle in the High Court of Justice, Queen’s Bench Division Administrative Court.

OPEN FORUM: Andrew Barnes raised a concern about the danger of driving out of the entrance to Gracewell Care Home onto the Oxford Road. This would be conveyed to Highways at OCC. Nick Fennell suggested that the results of the Judicial Review should be conveyed to the village. It was agreed that a statement would be made on the APC website www.adderburypc.co.uk. and www.adderbury.org.

FINANCE: A request had been received from the PCC for assistance in funding repair works to the St Mary’s church clock. The PC was minded to contribute to the cost but would request a breakdown of the costs and detail of the necessary re-gilding.

ALLOTMENT RENT: It was agreed to increase this from £26 to £27 for 2018/19.

PARISH COUNCIL MATTERS: It was noted that the two applications for Judicial Review had both been refused. The cost to the PC to defend itself was £6100 plus VAT. The PC had applied for costs. It was agreed that the Clerk should look into the possibility of amending the insurance cover to ensure cover for any JRs that may arise in the future. The Chairman planned to contact the Law Society complaining about emails that had been sent to the Clerk by Mr Davies.

PARISH COUNCIL SURGERY: Two members of the public had attended, one requesting consideration of creating a footpath along the north side of Berry Hill Road, and the other requesting improvement of drop kerbs in Church Lane suitable for mobility scooters.

The PC agreed to contact OCC about the feasibility of the BH Road footpath and would also contact residents to establish their views. The kerb issue would also be looked at.

PARISH INSTITUTE: Councillor Lyons was appointed the new PC trustee at the Institute.

HEALTH AND SAFETY: All was in order at The Rise – the bin needed emptying. The entrance paths to the Lucy Plackett Play area will be made good when the contractors move in to install the new play equipment. All was well at The Lakes.

WORKING FOR ADDERBURY COMMUNITY (WRAC): The constitution was approved. Councillors Rye, Mitchell, and Shallis were appointed as trustees to WRAC. It was agreed that quotes would be obtained for the recommended drainage and levelling work necessary.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: The Chairman reported that this was now at the submission stage at CDC. A meeting had been held with the officer in charge of Neighbourhood Plans – a few minor points needed addressing and she had agreed that they would progress the NP by 22 October for submission consultation.

FOCAL: A report was noted.

RECYCLING BINS: It was agreed that the clothing recycling bin on the Oxford Road should be removed due to the increase in fly tipping and mess which regularly occurred there.

DOG BIN: It was agreed that a new green dog waste bin should be installed at The Rise.

PLAQUE ON TREE IN PLAYING FIELD: A request for this had been granted.

FOOTBALL CLUB: The PC had been informed that some damage had been caused to the doors of the sports and social club during a break-in last weekend. More details would be obtained.

ADDERBURY PARISH COUNCIL GRANTS 2018/2019 Adderbury Parish Council has a small budget for the award of grants in 2018/2019.

To enable the Parish Council to feed the grant applications into its budgeting process, applications for 2018/2019 are being requested earlier than they usually would be.

The Parish Council can give grants to community organisations in the village whose activities benefit some, or all, of its residents, or some, or all, of the area.

The deadline for applications is Friday 13 October 2017.

KATHARINE HOUSE HOSPICE SANTA DASH AND CHRISTMAS TRAIL SUNDAY 26 NOVEMBER, PEOPLE’S PARK, BANBURY Join us at People's Park in Banbury on Sunday 26 November for the festive fun and raise money for people facing life-limiting illness.

Get your free Santa suits and take part in a jolly jog or winter walk after a Rockin' Robin warm up! People's Park will be in full festive spirit with a brass band, music from Radio Horton, and hot drinks for all taking part. This year there's also the Christmas Trail --- a children's treasure hunt for our younger supporters. Tickets are £15 for adults, £8 for children, and £40 for a family (2 adults & 2 children).

Led by the hospice chaplain, a special part of the service is the blessing of the books of remembrance which this year will contain your personal handwritten messages. Our Lights of Love events are open to everyone. Katharine House Hospice is holding its sixth annual Make a Will Week from 16-20 October 2017. Local solicitors and will writers will write a basic or standard will or update an existing will in return for a donation to the hospice. They are generously donating their time and expertise to help raise vital funds, so we are asking people to please be guided by the usual will writing fee when making their donation. The equivalent cost of an average basic will could pay for a day of home visits from one of our community nurses, supporting people with life-limiting illness.
