The annual WADA Golf Spring Cup was held in September at the Vines Resort, Ellenbrook. The Lakes Course was host to 27 keen golfers vying for the perpetual trophy and prizes donated by our major corporate sponsor Dentsply-Sirona.
The final fixture of the year was held at the spectacular Lake Karrinyup Country Club, where a large field of 39 golfers gathered to contest the ADA Cup, sponsored by David Owen from Swan Valley Dental Laboratory. This is a long-standing trophy, dating back to 1936, which is contested as a stroke event, with the winner determined by the best net score.
Once again, the weather gods provided us with an outstanding day for golf. An early lunch in the Greenside Café was followed by a challenging 18 holes on the championship members’ course. The site of various international tournaments over the years, including the Johnny Walker Classic and Heineken Classic, The Lakes Course is a stern test with considerable water in play. In a closely fought contest, David Owen from Swan Valley Dental Laboratory secured the win with a fine score of 37 points, from Stuart Bowden on 36 points. A countback was required to separate three players for third place, with Garry Bishop from Health Practice Brokers pipping Paul Tan and Jane McCarthy on 35-points. Post-match presentations and hospitality were enjoyed by all. We were joined for the afternoon by representatives of Dentsply-Sirona in Russel Redpath and Craig Botes. Subsequently, Dentsply product representatives Becky Yates and Leanne Patrick joined the group to award the Dentsply-Sirona trophy and celebrate with the various winners of the day. Fast greens and windy conditions meant scoring was difficult with only six players managing a net score playing to their handicap or better. Russell Gordon proved the best gross score golfer of the day with an impressive 79 shots off the stick, and a competitive net score of 70. This was only enough to secure third place in the overall ADA Cup competition with Jay Vaddagiri and Stu Phillips each posting fantastic net scores of 69 strokes. The evening concluded with presentation of the Cec White Trophy, the winner determined by an aggregate of results over the eight WADA Golf events during the year. In an historic first for WADA Golf, Jane McCarthy became the first ever female winner of the trophy, having completed a consistent season of golf, posting: a first; two second place finishes; a third; and a fourth for the seven events she contested. Congratulations Jane and we hope this inspires all female dental golfers to come forward and join our group for the season ahead.
