The residential buildings in this model housing program are modest in size but feature high ceilings, creating a sense of spaciousness. Despite their limited footprint, these dwellings provide enough room for everyday activities while encouraging residents to engage with the rest of the site and its various third spaces. This integration fosters a sense of community and companionship, promoting a comfortable and breathable environment.

The selection of materials for this housing program was a thoughtful process aimed at enhancing the overall experience of residents and humanizing the landscape. Brick was chosen as the primary material for the lower levels, retaining walls, and communal buildings, paying homage to the original Hobbs House and establishing a sense of human scale. Different colors in the brickwork allow for clear differentiation of space and context, adding visual interest and depth to the design. In contrast, colorbond cladding was used for the upper levels to create separation and a modern aesthetic. Natural timber was incorporated throughout the project to bring warmth and a connection to nature. Polished concrete flooring provides thermal mass, durability, and ease of maintenance. Together, these material choices create a welcoming and comfortable environment for the residents, blending harmoniously with the surroundings.

In the context of youth homelessness, architecture acts as a powerful catalyst for change, paving the way towards a better future. This housing model endeavors to unite at-risk youth through spaces that offer more than basic shelter; it provides a ‘third space’ for building companionship. An adaptable modular design, with high ceilings and modest space, creates cost-effective multi-person dwellings, and single unit dwellings that encourage the residents to engage with the spaces on site. Community integration is prioritized through ‘third spaces’, these are versatile communal spaces that encourage organic social interaction, both organised and impromptu.

These ‘third spaces’ enable disenfranchised young people to build companionship with others who share similar experiences.

STUDY

The study space serves as a refuge and a safe, quiet environment for thoughtful discussions and learning. With its soft furnishings, natural timber elements, and large windows, it provides a comfortable and inviting area. The soft furnishings, including cozy seating and plush rugs, create a cozy atmosphere where individuals can feel at ease. The natural timber elements add a touch of warmth and organic beauty to the space. The large windows allow abundant natural light to fill the room, creating a bright and welcoming ambiance.

INTIMATE GATHERING

The lowered gathering space is a flexible environment that can accommodate both big and small groups. It has cozy corners and open areas, allowing for different types of interactions. The curved brick walls and wooden seats create a welcoming and natural atmosphere. These design elements help the space blend in with its surroundings. Moreover, the tiered layout and strategic plant placements create separation between different areas, giving each group privacy and their own space to gather.

CAFE

The cafe not only provides a physical space for people to come together and socialize, but it also helps the community by offering employment opportunities for some residents. By working at the cafe, these residents not only earn a living, but also make new friends and learn valuable skills that can positively impact their lives. The cafe plays an important role in improving the overall well-being and quality of life of the community it serves.
