Hudson Girl Scouts Earn Silver Award Three girls from Hudson have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award – the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

Loralyn DiDucca, Emma Fondas, and Abigail Maston, from Troop 75242 in Hudson, will be honored for their achievement at a ceremony this spring, along with other Girl Scouts from Central and Western Massachusetts.

“Saving the Honeybees” was the title of the girls’ project, which addressed why honeybees are dying and what we can do to help save them. The scouts presented their research to the

fifth graders at Quinn Middle School and then helped the students plant seeds for bee-friendly flowers. The girls also rehabilitated a garden plot at Lamson Park, to attract the pollinators, and built and painted a beehive.

They will purchase bees and set up the beehive in the spring.

In addition to identifying an issue they care about and matching it to community needs and interests, they needed to talk to community leaders and organizations, develop and execute a plan, individually lead a part of the plan, and spend a minimum of 50 hours each.

who provided information and expertise to make their project successful. Stephen Burney, from Hudson Hives, shared his experience and facts about bees.

Steven Santos from Hudson Parks and Recreation helped them find a location for their garden. The Hudson Garden Club has volunteered to help the girls maintain the garden. The girls hope that by educating local kids about bees and what they do for our environment, maintaining a garden, and introducing more pollinators to our community, they will make a lasting impact.

Much of the project took place during the 2017-18 school year, when the teens were in eighth grade. They completed their final reports this past fall and will set up the beehive this spring and continue to help maintain the garden.

Live Art Of Fly Tying At Historic Longfellow’s Wayside Inn The art of fly tying and bamboo fly rod exhibit will take place at the Wayside Inn on Sunday March 17th from 10 am to 4 pm in the 2nd floor historic ball room. Traditional fly tying and fishing was taught by fathers, mothers, uncles, friends etc. to children. Returning veterans from wars were taught fly tying to recover from injuries.

A license is not necessary to learn about fly tying. People from all walks of life learn to tie; from presidents, doctors, students, mothers, fathers, tradesmen, sons, daughters, grandkids, priests, teachers, housewives etc. take up the hobby. Some of the best fly tyers in the world are women. It doesn’t matter what your marital status is.

The public is invited and it’s free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This is the 12th Annual Fly Tying and Bamboo Fly Rod exhibit at the Inn. The first year was 2007. It was the late Doug Bugley idea to stock Josephine’s Pond built by Henry Ford who owned the Inn in 1920 with trout. Doug wanted a program where children and adults could learn about fly tying and fly fishing for trout. Mr. Bugley was the Beverage Manager at the Inn for 35 years passed away from cancer on 2009. It was his request to have event to continue.

FPC Sunday Service: Living Our Values On Sunday, Feb. 17, First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist, welcomes Laura Wagner as she leads a service on “Living Our Values.” Services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m.

Unitarian Universalists value the seven principles that guide them. As they work to confront oppression in today’s political climate, these values are more important than ever. Ms. Wagner, executive director of the social justice nonprofit UU Mass Action, will explore the climate crisis, how this intersects with multiple justice issues, and what we are called to do to create change.

“My message includes the need to hold many conflicting feelings at once and understand the big picture of what’s happening in our world,” she says.

“Then, one can focus on a specific area in which they wish to engage.”

February is African American History Month. In coordination with First Parish of Concord, First Parish of Sudbury, and the Maynard Anti-Racism Alliance, the names of victims of lynching will be read during each service throughout this month.

Assabet Valley Mastersingers Assabet Valley Mastersingers will showcase a stirring array of American Folk Songs on Sunday, March 10th at St. Mark’s School, 25 Marlborough Rd. (Rte. 85), Southborough 01772. The program will include both sets of Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs; Gwyneth Walker’s River Songs, commissioned by AVM in 1996; and four compelling folk song arrangements by Mack Wilberg for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. AVM Artistic Director & Founder Robert P. Eaton will conduct the 3:30 pm concert with accompaniment by two pianos and percussion and with three vocal soloists selected from the chorus. New, Grief Circles Are you or someone you know struggling with a significant loss? The Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson (UCMH) is now offering Grief Circles, offering compassionate care to anyone who has experienced a loss of any type.

The Grief Circles are facilitated by Rev. Alice AnachekaNasemann and meet twice per month where participants gather to share stories within a community of love and mutual support.

An evening session meets first Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30pm and a daytime session meets on third Wednesdays from 1-2pm.

Local Rotary Clubs Sponsor Meal Packaging Event The Rotary Clubs of Nashoba Valley, Littleton, ActonBoxborough, Clinton, and Wachusetts Area, along with the Nashoba Regional High School Interact Club, the Littleton High School Community Service Club, the Assabet Marine Corps JROTC, and Workers Credit Union, are sponsoring the sixth annual Rise Against Hunger food packaging event on March 2 from 9:30 AM to 1 PM at Littleton High School, 56 King Street, Littleton, MA. The goal is to package 20,000 meals in a couple of hours. Interested participants can register at https:// tinyurl.com/y3fgqa2p Walk-in volunteers are also welcome.

The assembly process combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages. These meal packages are shipped around the world to support school feeding programs and crisis relief. The food stores easily, transports quickly, and has a shelf-life of two years.

“Rise Against Hunger is a great way to provide healthy, cost-effective meals,” said Chris Spear, Chair and Past President of the Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley. “We’re are funding the cost of the food. Now we need help from anyone and everyone

to reach our packaging goal and to help us combat hunger around the world.” Past meal packages have been sent to Madagascar and Burkina Faso, in cooperation with partnering agencies.

Established in 1998, Rise Above Hunger, formerly known

as Stop Hunger Now, coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid to crisisburdened areas around the world.

Green Hudson is pleased to announce that after working together with Sustainable Stow we were awarded a HeatSmart Massachusetts grant. The program will be working to increase the adoption of clean, efficient and cost-effective heating and cooling technologies by aggregating homeowner buying power

HeatSmart is an important program for our community as it raises awareness of reliable cost effective heating and cooling solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We will be holding many meetings to present heat pump technology, how it can be incorporated into a home, the likely cost savings and the rebates which are available to homeowners who install heat pumps. We are looking for assistance in reaching out to organizations in town where we can do presentations and for people to help at the events which we schedule. On the agenda for this month’s meeting will be planning for our March 5th HeatSmart information session. Preparing for our meeting with the town Select Committee to discuss our Plastic Bag Reduction petition.

Fresh Start Furniture Bank Seeks Donated Items And Volunteers Fresh Start Furniture Bank has moved to a new Hudson location and is busy serving new clients.

If you’ve been cleaning out and looking for a place to donate your furniture and household goods, please come see us!

We are a volunteer run nonprofit in Hudson that provides furniture, linens and housewares free of charge to qualified Massachusetts residents in need.

We depend on your donations to provide for hundreds of families from across the state each year.

This year we expect to provide over 24,000 items to as many as 800 families. We already have 70 open referrals. Last Saturday alone 13 clients came in!

Now we need to restock our shelves with household goods and our showroom floor with furniture. This week we are in particular need of basic appliances (except coffee makers), twin size blankets and king size comforters, glasses, coffee tables, TV stands, lamps, rectangular kitchen tables, and queen size beds. We accept items in good, clean condition only. All donations are tax deductible. Additionally, we would be grateful for new packing materials (bubble wrap) and new bed pillows, or cash donations to purchase these types of items, as well as to help offset our build-out and increased operating costs.

Rotary Offers Youth Leadership Conference Opportunity The Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley seeks qualified candidates to apply for this year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) conference to be held June 28 – June 30 at Fitchburg State University, Fitchburg MA. This annual leadership conference offers outstanding high school sophomores an opportunity to live, work, and interact together in an atmosphere of friendly competition. Unitarian Universalists value the seven principles that guide them. As they work to confront oppression in today’s political climate, these values are more important than ever.

Ms. Wagner, executive director of the social justice nonprofit UU Mass Action, will explore the climate crisis, how this intersects with multiple justice issues, and what we are called to do to create change.

“My message includes the need to hold many conflicting feelings at once and understand the big picture of what’s happening in our world,” she says.

“Then, one can focus on a specific area in which they wish to engage.”
