WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term One, Week Eleven, 9 April 2021 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland I hope, like me, you were able to enjoy the extended Easter holiday – generating two short weeks, with only now one week until the end of term one.

It always surprises me, however, that the short week somehow always seems to feel like a long one once you get to Friday.

Most of you will now be aware that a travel bubble is going to be open between most of Australia and New Zealand just before the holidays. One can therefore only assume that several our families will make use of this opportunity and begin travelling outside the country again. Enjoy that time away, everyone.

On Thursday we had ten ‘new’ Year One visitors at school for their first school experience. I know the parents, children, and their teachers really enjoyed the experience. One further visit is planned for next week.

Currently, Sunderland will be welcoming twenty new students to the school in Term Two.

Primary Year 4CF & 4-5WB Spanish Classes

Hola! Year 4CF & 4-5WB are having fun while learning the Spanish language. They also tried to create a collage of all the words and expressions that they learnt.

Badminton Club Tuesday’s Badminton Club players are having fun and are all eager to learn the different skills in playing badminton.

Visual Arts Year 1 students are having fun in Visual Arts class while learning about colours, patterns and how to draw different figures like butterfly, penguin, shark, rocket ship and others.

Extracts from Year Eight English Descriptive Writing I tumble around in the water, as the life-threatening wave towers over me. I shut my eyes and hold my breath. The ferocious wave roars louder and louder, and is getting closer by the second, but I can do nothing about it. I look up and get a better glimpse of the mighty waves. Suddenly, I feel a cold shiver all over my body. The wind is howling loudly. I am all by myself caught in this mess. Nobody else is anywhere to be seen. A large wave slams into me, sending me flying further out to sea. My left leg gets tangled in the coral underneath the salty water, and I desperately try to untangle it, trying not to drown. As a result, I bruise my left knee badly. Pain. Torture. I can’t think of anything else at the moment. I feel like the world is over. I hear the whoosh from the waves as they crash towards the shore. I know it is going to be a long and hard journey.

Fear and frustration fill my mind as I desperately try to stay afloat. Cold waves crash on top of me, taking me further and further away from the sanctuary of land. The sky is grey and the thunder rumbles angrily, and it starts to rain heavily. I can feel my soaking wet hair on my back. With half of my body frozen, I feebly try to swim against the tide with little success. With every kick, I feel a sharp, piercing pain on my left leg. I kick harder, attempting to get to shore, but it only makes the pain worse.

In a blink of an eye, I am washed up onto the shore. The frothy, blue saltwater crashes onto the shore, then gently rolls up to the rising tide line, and slowly rolls back into the churning ocean water. It is all over, I think, smiling. I’m safe now.

The sun peeking through the heavy, white clouds illuminates the sky in a dazzling orange glow. All is still and quiet apart from the chorus of crashing waves.

We were stranded in the middle of the ocean, struggling to survive. Somalian pirates surrounded us. We waited patiently on the outside, but on the inside, we were panicking. Suddenly, a roaring, wet storm came over the Red Sea. The Somalian pirates went away and left us to drown. We wished we had gone through the Persian Gulf to deliver the oil, even though the Persian ships were blocking Saudi Arabia’s oil shipments. A few cannonballs dropped on our ship before the Somalian pirates ditched us. We tried to get inside of what was left of the boat, but right at that time, a massive wave gushed at us, and the ship started swaying side-to-side, whilst we tried to swim out of the thick oil that was oozing out of the barrels. It was a disaster.

At last, we thought we saw a helicopter that was coming from Yemen, but we knew it couldn’t be, since there was such a harsh civil war going on right now, and the government wouldn’t waste time on a couple of people drowning. But we realised that was a Saudi Arabian rescue helicopter once we saw the flag. We leaped onto the ladder and climbed up to safety.

As the sun bloomed in the light of dawn, my crew and I set sail for the everlasting land of Narnia. The sea was harsh, banging on the rocks of the shore as if lions were roaring at the benevolent sky. The waves tumbled and rumbled across the deep horizon taking the ocean by its side.

As the black clouds filled the sky, which gushed rain and thunder, the waves tucked my schooner on its side. I was holding on to the halyard like there was no tomorrow. In this case, there was going to be no tomorrow. The waves bashed down the hull of the ship. forcefully holding its currents. the ship started to tilt even more than it already was and not being able to hold I fell off the yard, falling into the vast ocean.

Dwindling down from the mainsails plunging into the deep-sea, felt like death was on the brink of my soul. The screams of the crew were haunting and blood-curdling, plummeting to the bottom of the briny sea no matter how young or old. I managed to hold on to a piece of plank that fell off the sinking ship, although it helped me to float, it didn’t help with the strong seas and water currents. There was a huge wave that I could never forget; a giant shadow was over me and came with it was an enormous wave even bigger than the schooner. It was almost as if it was Poseidon himself who was trying to catch me with his hands. To think a harmless export to Narnia would lead to the devasting death trap. The ship was carried over me by the gigantic wave, washing me with it.

The clouds had boomed, the rain had banged and the thunder came crashing down. Angry waves swiveled in irregular patterns, lefts, rights, going east, west, and even upwards. Sprays of cold seawater blasted in my face like spit, the wind deafening me as it flung my hair back and forth possessing my body. I glimpsed sunlight through the thick black clouds as it dragged me to the depths below.

Notices New Violin Teacher - Fiona Haughton

I am very pleased to announce that we will be having a new violin teacher start at ACG Sunderland.

Teaching is something she is very passionate about. She holds a Bachelor of Music, with first class honours, from Victoria University in Wellington. She also has a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of British Columbia. She has played in a number of professional music organisations such as The NZ Symphony Orchestra and the NZ Opera Company.

Mrs. Haughton has a great deal of experience as a violin instructor. She uses the Suzuki method as it is a well-proven and successful teaching pedagogy.

Her lessons will be on a Monday at Sunderland, starting the 15 March. Lessons will take place during the school day.

If you are interested in your child taking violin lessons, then please do contact Mrs. Haughton directly to set up a time. mfhaughton@gmail.com At reception, there is a pamphlet entitled “Itinerant Music Lessons”. This form should be completed and given to Mr. O’Connor (via reception) before lessons start. This document outlines the costs and expectations that go with instrument Music lessons at our school.

I would also like to let parents know that we have four, good quality, full sized violins that are available to be borrowed.

There is no rental fee for these.

I do hope a large number of students will be keen to take up violin lessons with Mrs. Haughton. We are very lucky to have her as our new string teacher.
