WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term One, Week Five, 26 February 2021

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland After the challenges of our three-day lockdown of last week, this week has been far more settled. I have again been so impressed at how our students here at ACG Sunderland can ‘pivot’ from face to face teaching to virtual learning and back again so efficiently. The school has been back to its best from a teaching and learning perspective.

Next Tuesday is the annual Whole School Athletics Day, being held at the Trust Stadium. This is perhaps the biggest logistic challenge for the school, with all students, including the Preschool, all making their way down to the track to compete over the course of the day. We will make sure there are huge number of photos taken on the day. I do remind all students this is a House event and House shirts are compulsory.

Currently, the forecast is for a few showers taking place on the day. It will have to be extreme weather for this event to be postponed. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

I want to congratulate our First Eleven Cricket team. As they beat Dilworth Firsts on Saturday. We have a young side that is competing very well and I personally wish them all the very best for the remainder of the season.

Most other summer sports have begun this week, with both the Primary and Lower College basketball programmes having started up at Massey YMCA. I wish to acknowledge Mr Philip Keen and Mr Sam Baker for all their effort in getting all our keen athletes into sport in 2021.

Next Monday, we are also acknowledging our scholars at the annual Special Scholars Assembly. This year, over two hundred certificates will be presented at the event. This is a 70% increase in our students’ meeting the threshold of being recognised as a scholar. Parents and graduates alike will be in attendance – it is always one of the highlights of my year.

Have a wonderful weekend at Alert Level One, and enjoy the freedoms of making the most of the end of our summer.

Join an Extra-Curricular at ACG Sunderland

School only happens once a lifetime and is an integral part of our lives. It is a time where we can develop or find a passion that could stick with us eternally. That is why we should not focus all our attention on instantaneous enjoyment such as spending hours on video games or social media. With an endless array of options at ACG Sunderland, there is no excuse of finding a hobby that suits your interests.

For example, if you want to challenge yourself physically, you can find a sports registration form on Blackboard. I would personally love a few more basketball players to join the team, but whatever sport you choose, make sure to hand in your form before it is too late.

If sports are not your go to, ACG Sunderland provides an extensive curriculum of performing arts. Have you ever wanted to learn an instrument? Well, ACG gifts this opportunity with exceptional teachers as well as choices in drama, visual arts, debating, and public speaking. The possibilities are infinite meaning the next step is up to you.

Another great way to get involved with school life is by paying attention to the daily notices. It is just 5 minutes of your day and should not be disregarded. Almost every day there are clubs that are looking for members like the Student Voice. When I first came to this school, I eluded the use of the daily notices which now reflecting on makes me such a fool. There were so many clubs and activities I missed out on because I was not proactive. I suggest you do not make the same mistakes and listen attentively the next time the notices are read as you will be surprised with the number of things that will interest you.

The benefits of joining an extra-curricular activity are self-explanatory. Firstly, you will meet new people. With the same interests, I would assume making new friends will be super easy and I mean who does not love friends. You will also learn about time-management skills as you will most likely be having weekly meetings as well as balancing out time spent on homework and tasks required by your extra-curricular activity. This will also benefit in future job/university applications. These activities are what separate you from the crowd because everybody wants somebody who has a diverse multitude of talents.

School is not a timeless interlude and signing up for an extra-curricular is not difficult. The activities are less based around skill. More often, the person who shines has commitment and determination. Be bold, take the leap of faith, and join an extra-curricular at ACG Sunderland.

Swimming Sports A few weeks ago, we had Swimming Sports. I was glad to see lots of smiles on my friend’s faces. Being honest, I was not looking forward to this swimming sports. I was nervous to verse other people on swimming since this was my first time participating in this event. Somehow, my nervousness was gone after I entered the swimming pool.

The pool was decorated with different colours, each house members supporting other teammates. I could hear people laughing, shouting out their house charts and more around me. Personally, I wish I’d entered more races. I want next year to come sooner so I can see everyone’s proud smiles again!

Help our planet!

There is no doubt that the earth is in trouble. Climate change, pollution, disappearing forests and lastly pandemics. We have to play our part to minimize these terrible situations disturbing our planet.

So how are we going to help?

Upcycle things you find that have no longer any use (reuse an object with no use to create something of better quality and use)

.

If you have any clothing that either doesn’t fit you or you don’t like it anymore, donate it to a charity store.

.

If you want to start small, then focus on one thing and slowly progress by: taking faster showers; remembering to turn off the light in a vacant room; unplug unused appliances, your phone if it is already 100%, even unplug the toaster! You can even save energy by spending less time looking into the fridge; opening the fridge won’t make your desired food appear.

Think about whether you really need to turn on the dishwasher, or if there’s only a couple plates and mugs in there; is it necessary?

.

If you are really committed, installing solar panels or buying an electric car is the next step.

.

Use your voice to help spread this to friends and family, as the world is not going to clean it self-up! You could write a small article like this one, or you could even make some posters and hang them up around your town. Bring it up in conversations; make yourself heard!

.

Make it a goal to pick up at least 10 pieces of plastic every week and increase that number every week!

You can do anything you set your mind too, any of the things I’ve listed above, or you could even start shopping at plastic free stores! For example, Refill Nation, which is only 9 minutes away from school!

But just remember: Get Drastic About Plastic!!!

Isha Takyar – National Rotary Science and Technology Forum Before attending the National Rotary Science & Technology Forum, I was a completely different person. This journey has changed me into a better person; I am more aware of the power of science, the extensive innovations in technology, and the broad range of talent I will meet again in my future.

Across the 2 weeks, I was introduced and exposed to 14 potential career paths. From psychology to sports science, we were shown concepts which were fascinating. In my opinion, the biomedical science was the most interesting, primarily because of how hands-on the experience was. In this module we dissected sheep’s heart and lungs. Although it was initially unsettling, once I got used to it, I was able to appreciate both the specimen and the content we were learning.

Another favourite was Chemistry at Massey University. I had my first experience distilling, in this case extracting ethanol out of red wine. Out of the 14 modules I took part in, of course there were some which didn’t strike a bell, but I guess that’s all part of the process. Now I know now that those select pathways are not the right ones for me.

Alongside the modules, we took part in three technology visits. My first one was a visit to TVNZ. There, we were shown around the technical backrooms where all the control are. We were also allowed on the TVNZ stage. It was amazing to see how advanced their technology was. My next tech visit was to the Auckland Medical School. With the help of a cancer-research team, we went on a tour of the research facilities available within the building. Not only did we do that, but we also were shown the Medical School Learning Centre, a room full of more than 1,000 pathological specimen and anatomical models. My last tech visit was working alongside AUT and helping their Living Labs project. Their main aim is to restore native forest around New Zealand. We helped log data of native trees planted around the Pourewa Creek in Ōrākei. It helped open my eyes to the importance of restoring native life around Aotearoa.

Although the forum was academically oriented, the idea of living a healthy lifestyle was also encouraged. One way this was shown was having us do early morning activities, whether it be running or mindfulness. Admittedly it was difficult the first few days to be waking up at 5:00, but after getting used to it I somehow started looking forward to it. Along with our early morning exercises, we had an ongoing volleyball competition across the six colour groups. The energy across the colours was extremely similar to our own houses at school, so putting in the extra enthusiasm was nothing new to me, especially when hearing I was put in the red group! Even though the competition got fierce, it was amazing to see the level of comradery everyone had for each other at these volleyball competitions. It was something that existed out of court as well, which contributed to making the forum such a safe place to be.

By attending this forum, I was able to find like-minded people. I was exposed to so many different opinions and ideas that have better sculpted me as a person. Although I may not know exactly what I want to go into in my future years, this forum has confirmed the type of skills I want to be able to use in my chosen career path. If I hadn’t received support from the Parents & Friends committee, I wouldn’t have experienced such a life-changing event. I wouldn’t have gone through my personal growth nor would I have explored the extent of possibilities available.

The key is being specific, and remember that staff like it when you are proactive. The tutorial is the opportunity to look closely at the requirements of a piece of work with the guidance of a staff member.
