Vol 16, Term Four, Week Five, 13 November 2020

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Like many of you, I had the privilege of attending the Primary Production ‘Tell Us A Story – Aesop Fables’ on Wednesday evening. It was a very polished performance, with the entire two hundred strong primary student body getting on stage.

Most were on front stage but also a great group backstage along with all the technical support too.

I was so very impressed with each year group’s performance.

They were all smiling, engaged and clearly enjoying being ‘onstage’.

A big thank you to all the Primary staff who arranged all the costume and set hires, dancing and choreography too.

An extra special thank you to Mr. Dan O’Connor and Mrs. Sarah Lim for directing the show. Its my understanding Dan also wrote all the music too.

We are blessed with wonderful staff here at ACG Sunderland!

Well done to everyone involved.

Orientation Day will be on Tuesday 17 November.

If you are like me and on tank water, this rainfall over the past week or so has come at just the right time. However, running field trips this time of the year can be problematic as we navigate these Spring conditions.

Therefore, Mrs. Barlow was thrilled that both field trips this week managed to dodge all this rainfall. The feedback from the marine focussed trip to Long Bay was very positive, and a big thank you to all the parents who also accompanied us on these very important experiences.

This week we announced the teachers who will be responsible for teaching your children in the Primary School in 2021.

We are so very excited with the quality of staff we have available here at Sunderland with the addition of two new staff.

I also wanted to explain to everyone, that due to the growth of the Primary in 2021 and beyond, I have moved Mrs Chartrand out of the classroom setting so we can generate more time for her to run the Primary school.

Therefore, Leanne will be taking Technology as a specialist teacher and heading up all things Primary from 2021.

This is a wonderful promotion for Mrs Chartrand who continues to work tirelessly for our school.

The Parents and Friends committee would like to invite new parents to this very relaxed group who meet on a monthly basis. The focus of Parents and Friends is to welcome new parents to the school and support the school where appropriate by running a variety of functions. Please see Sonya Eldridge for more information.

Spanish in Primary

The Year 5 class have been researching the Hispanic festival DĂ­a de los muertos or Day of the Dead.

This takes place every year on 1st and 2nd November and is a celebration of life and remembrance of those who have passed away.

The students designed their own ofrendas and described why they would have particular items on their altar.

These were then displayed inside a traditional calavera or sugar skull – one of the many items associated with the colourful celebration.

The Teacher Band ‘Geek Chic’: Interview Part 1 In ACG Sunderland, three amazing teachers are part of the teachers band ‘Geek Chic’. Geek Chic is the teacher band with a singer; guitarist and a drummer. Some of our students in Sunderland have interviewed our teacher band members this week. Some interviews were done in person and some were done through emails. We are really grateful that we had the opportunity to interview all members in the band, Thank you again to all the teachers who have replied and gave up their time for our interview.

Mr Dawson, our Design and Technology teacher is an awesome bass guitarist in the band. He gave us some humorous responses about the origin of their band name and the basic information about the teachers’ band. Here are some of interesting replies he have us in the interview.

Where did the name ‘Geek Chic’ come from?

‘Geek Chic! So, we were having our first practice and Ms. Ngoh said, ‘Oh, im only learning the drums and I’m a Maths teacher, I’m such a geek!’

I replied saying ‘Actually, you are pretty chic!’

I looked at Mr. O’Connor and said ‘Geek Chic!’ and he said ‘Yes! that’s the name of our band.’

Could you tell me briefly about the teacher band?

‘Yeah, so we first performed in the 2020 Battle of the Bands and Talent Show. Since it was a virtual show due to Covid-19, we got together and decided to do a Ramone song which is a Punk band from the 1970’s. It was quite easy to play so we learnt the piece and played this in 2020.

What was your favourite song that you covered with the band?

‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ is my favourite song, a very short song which we played for the first time. It’s a song with a very fast tempo. You might know if from the movie ‘Spiderman – Home Coming.’ It was a really fun song to play.

What is the reason of choosing the instrument that you play now in the band?

I play the bass guitar in the band, and I’ve had mine since 2010. My wife is a very good musician, and she is also a music teacher; she brought me the bass guitar. She’s been teaching me over the years, and I haven’t been playing much, but Mr. O‘Connor inspired me to start playing again. So, I’m right back into it now!

What is your favourite part of being in the band?

I really like playing music. So, getting the chance to be in a band, it gives you a reason to play music. So it’s just nice to get together and the actual playing is just really fun making harmony with the other teachers in the band.

What do you want to tell our staff and students about the upcoming performances about your band?

We are going to be performing at the end of the year. It’s kind of like the Battle of the Bands and Talent show. I think we’re doing three songs in preparation for that, and make sure you clap and scream really loudly when we do!

The last Checkpoint unit for this year is ‘A Load Of Nonsense’.

Amelia Lee and Anya Thurner wrote poems about their fantastic beasts using iambic tetrameter and rhyming couplets:

‘The Crema’

‘The Peflagon’

The Crema wonders day and night,

In children’s pockets snug and warm, Safe from the world and outside storm, The peflagon seeks shelter here, And burrows deeper with no fear He knows he’s sound with no threats And his fears he forgets He hides his face in his fur And his squeaks become a slur, Until the smell of food comes ‘round And out he comes, excitement loud His nose quivers in the air, He can smell that lunch is near, Licking his lips he spies the fruits Out he springs and forward he shoots, Eyes on the prize, nose on the scent Those who come near he shall torment, And once he gobbles up his meal He disappears with a satisfied squeal.

Until a nice home is in sight.

The family there then takes it in, Who could resist that adorable grin?

Its big round eyes are emerald green.

Its snow-white fur flows like a stream.

Its padded paws go thump, thump, thump.

It has a cuteness nothing can trump.

Its rounded body covered in fur It certainly did muster a murmur A murmur that spread far and wide.

Tales of cremas can relieve fright.

And due to its brave demeanour, It adopts the name - the cute, courageous, Crema.

Caitlin and Megan Unsworth wrote dictionary definitions for their own ‘Fantastic Beasts’:

The Pheonog: The Pheonog has the head, body and legs of a dog but the wings and tail of a phoenix. It is believed to have the ability to breathe fire. The Pheonog tends to be quite goofy and playful like a dog. Pheonogs can be kept as pets but be warned - your house must be fireproof!

The Slothragon: A colossal beast that is a mix between a sloth and a dragon. This unusual creature has the characteristics of a sloth and the fiery appearance of a dragon. They live in remote hillsides, far from civilization. With the small, furry body of a sloth and the ferocious wings, tail, and fire-breathing ability of a dragon, the Slothragon is an impressive figure. Their favourite treats are the heavenly hibiscus flowers.

Auckland Girls Chess

The results have been published!

Congratulations to Anya, Yolanda, Sophia, Miu Miu, Katie and Abigail, who represented ACG Sunderland and competed in the Auckland Girls Chess Competition.

For the fifth year in a row, Anya has won first place in her age grade.

Yolanda came in shared fifth place, a mere half point behind the shared second place.

Sophia was shared second place, half a point off the winner, and incidentally the only player who didn’t lose to the overall first placement player of the Under Tens.

Miu Miu had won four of six games.

Katie was only half a point behind second place in the Under Eights.

Abigail received two points.

Congratulations to our Sunderland girls!

Weet-Bix TRYathlon

We are only four weeks away from the Central West Auckland Sanitarium Weet-Bix TRYathlon. We hope everyone is getting excited.

Participants need to be entered by midnight on 11th November to take advantage of the Early Bird price of $45 as well as the option of having their TRYathlete pack couriered to their home.

Entries will continue to remain open but participants who enter after this date will need to collect their TRYathlete pack at our Early Pack Pick Up or on the event day.
