WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term One, Week Ten, 1 April 2021

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland The week began with long assembles for both the Primary and the College, as we celebrated a number of really talented students here at Sunderland.

At the College assembly, we were delightfully entertained by our in-house staff band for 2021, with Mr O’Connor on guitar, Mr Dawson on Bass, Mrs Dawson (Reliever) on vocals, Mrs King on vocals and Mrs Ngoh holding it all together on the drums. The band pumped out two ‘Blonde’ singles to the highly entertained student body. A huge thank you to all involved!!

Winter sports teams trainings are well under way at Sunderland with Hockey, Basketball, Netball, Table Tennis, Badminton, and Football trainings all taking place.

I wish to congratulate our Cricket team for a excellent season. They only lost one game, and the team they came second to was a composite team from three schools and two clubs, so not too bad!!

Thank you to those of you who supported our Open Day last weekend. In the end, it was our largest Open Day ever, with over eighty individual groups through the school. Also, big thank you to all our wonderful guides, who not only answered questions and showed guests around the school, but also gave up a big chunk of their Saturday too.

I wish to particularly highlight Mrs Victoria Ogden and Ms Phoebe Chong for stepping in and doing a lot of the organisation in Mr Stephens’ and Mrs Eldridge’s absences.

Sydney Sharp and Ethan Brown also did a superb job, coming into school early, and getting the school ready before our prospective parents arrived. One family arrived forty-five minutes before we set to open – but we coped!!

I wish to highlight our wonderful Ball coming up at the end of this Term. The Ball committee and Dr Kerryn Olsen have been working hard to make this a highly memorable evening for everyone. However, they do need your support – please purchase your tickets next week.

Have two wonderful short weeks as we celebrate Easter this weekend. Remember, school begins on Wednesday 7 April.

Inspiring our Students This week Sjaan Evans (mother of Toby Evans 2AV) came to speak to ACG Sunderland Primary to talk about her role as General Manager. This was part of our Leadership Ambassador program in the primary. Sjaan Evans spoke about how she needs to work in a team of over 100 scientists and with people around the world. She spoke to the children about how they need to work hard at school, do your homework and listen to your parents and teachers. The children really enjoyed having her at our Primary assembly today.

Enviroclub The college leaders at ACG Sunderland organised a paper recycling session with the Primary Enviroclub in the Art room. The children learned to take wet mulched paper bits and put it through a sieve and then strain the water out. Then it was layed to dry with dryers ready to become usable paper to take home. A huge thank you to the college leaders for their work today! Modelling Club Are you interested in making models?

Do you like escaping into fantasy worlds? Or are you a war-game mastermind? If you said “yes” to any of the above, then “Modelling Club” is a great opportunity for you! Painting and building models twice a week on Thursday and Friday lunchtimes, you will be able to build the army of your dreams.

This mesmerizing game is called “Warhammer”, and we play both versions of it- fantasy and sci-fi (40k). With 18 factions to choose, it is certain that you will find the one that suits you best. Players paint their own figures and terrains, building extravagant battlegrounds to play on. The background stories of each faction are all incredibly intriguing- be sure to find out which one is the undead skeleton-robot!

There are many phases of the game, each with a different purpose, where you can do different things. Although the process may sound complicated at first, we are certain that you will pick it up very quickly. Now that we have let you in on the secrets of the elite club, you can only find out more from here on! The endless possibilities of the game will leave you in a trance, so why not bring your unique battle-style to the battlefield?

Coral Reefs in Danger The ocean has hundreds of habitats – homes for marine life, but all this beauty and wonder is slowly diminishing due to pollution, and the worst part; we are the problem. The coral reef is one of the many habitats found in the ocean, and it’s in danger. Over 4,000 fish are dependent on coral reefs at some point in their life, others may choose to permanently live there. So how are the coral reefs dying? Coral Bleaching.

What is coral bleaching?

When coral is stressed due to temperature, light, or nutrient change, it expels the symbiotic algae living in its tissues, which can lead to colour loss (some corals turn a bright neon colour instead of losing their colour). When a coral is bleached it is not yet dead, but it is under stress and is subject to mortality. It will eventually die from starvation and turn a brown colour. What’s more, this isn’t a rare phenomenon, in fact, roughly half the Australia’s famous reefs have died off.

So how can you help?

Try and choose sustainable seafood and, you can do this by checking for this logo:

Try and save water, the less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater will end up in the ocean.

Long lasting light bulbs are a good idea as this sends less greenhouse gas into the air, climate change is one of the biggest threats for coral reefs.

If you go for a dive do not touch the corals, you can admire them from a distance.

When buying sunscreen check the ingredients so you are sure they will not harm marine life.

Common harmful chemicals are oxybenzone and octinoxate, a marine safe sunscreen is Nivea Sensitive Protect SPF50 Sunscreen.

When at the beach or anywhere in general, do not litter and if you see any trash pick it up!

Notices New Violin Teacher - Fiona Haughton

I am very pleased to announce that we will be having a new violin teacher start at ACG Sunderland.

Teaching is something she is very passionate about. She holds a Bachelor of Music, with first class honours, from Victoria University in Wellington. She also has a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of British Columbia. She has played in a number of professional music organisations such as The NZ Symphony Orchestra and the NZ Opera Company.

Mrs. Haughton has a great deal of experience as a violin instructor. She uses the Suzuki method as it is a well-proven and successful teaching pedagogy.

Her lessons will be on a Monday at Sunderland, starting the 15 March. Lessons will take place during the school day.

If you are interested in your child taking violin lessons, then please do contact Mrs. Haughton directly to set up a time. mfhaughton@gmail.com At reception, there is a pamphlet entitled “Itinerant Music Lessons”. This form should be completed and given to Mr. O’Connor (via reception) before lessons start. This document outlines the costs and expectations that go with instrument Music lessons at our school.

I would also like to let parents know that we have four, good quality, full sized violins that are available to be borrowed.

There is no rental fee for these.

I do hope a large number of students will be keen to take up violin lessons with Mrs. Haughton. We are very lucky to have her as our new string teacher.
