As we approach the Annual General Meeting scheduled for April 20th, I want to take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary community that is the American Club. Our Club transcends being a mere venue; it is a dynamic assembly of individuals brought together by common interests, forming a haven in a world that can often feel fast-paced and disconnected.
In our pursuit of inclusivity and unity, we have successfully cultivated an environment where diversity is not only acknowledged but celebrated, and camaraderie thrives. This distinctive atmosphere is a testament to the collective spirit of our Members, each contributing to the unique tapestry that defines the American Club. At the heart of our club lies the Board of Governors, your elected representatives. Their unwavering dedication is the bedrock upon which our Club's inclusive ethos stands. Tirelessly working to ensure that the American Club remains a welcoming and nurturing space, the Board's commitment to upholding our shared values permeates every decision and initiative they undertake. Behind the scenes, our Committees play a pivotal role in shaping the overall Club experience. Collaborating seamlessly with Management and staff, these Committees are instrumental in establishing traditions, fostering meaningful connections, and ensuring that your experience at the American Club is always at the forefront of our focus.
Our dedicated staff, many of whom have devoted the majority of their careers to serving you, go above and beyond mere employment. Their commitment is a genuine pledge to make the American Club a second home for each Member. From the warm faces at the front desk to the skilled individuals working diligently behind the scenes, our team forms an invaluable part of the Club's intricate fabric.
A special note of gratitude goes to the Members who participated in the voting process through the "Written Consent." We understand that, due to its nature, this process may have taken longer than anticipated. Your engagement in these matters is a vital aspect of shaping the direction of our community, and we appreciate your dedication to the continued success of the American Club.
As we approach the AGM, we encourage all members to actively participate in open dialogue, form connections with fellow Members, and commit to preserving the positive atmosphere that defines our Club. Your voice holds significance, and the AGM serves as a crucial opportunity for us all to come together, share insights, and collectively contribute to the future of the American Club.
Thank you for being an integral part of our vibrant and diverse community. Your commitment, enthusiasm, and individuality are the driving forces that make the American Club truly exceptional. I look forward to welcoming you at the Annual General Meeting on April 20th.
Warm regards
Dear Fellow Members,
As we stand at the threshold of 2024, it is my pleasure to present an overview of our Club's financial performance for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023.
Revenue Report
Since May 1, we enacted a revision to the Food and Beverage (F&B) minimum charge, elevating it from $3,200 to $4,500. Despite this adjustment, I am pleased to announce that our F&B expenditure beyond the minimum charge has consistently exhibited robust performance, highlighting the engaged involvement and backing of our Members.
Our Food and Beverage sector witnessed a remarkable 18.5% surge in revenue in 2022. Concurrently, conscientious measures in cost management resulted in a commendable 1.6% reduction in raw goods costs, despite the upward trend in food prices. These accomplishments underscore our dedication to financial responsibility and operational excellence.
Unit:
2022 2021
Operating Surplus 21 19 17
In 2023, we not only met but surpassed our budgetary projections. Our operating surplus exceeded the anticipated amount by $6 million, marking a notable $2 million improvement compared to 2022. This achievement underscores the collective financial acumen and responsibility demonstrated by the Management Team and the Board.
The influence of our robust operating surplus is evident in a significant boost in cash flow, reaching $33.8 million. This heightened liquidity strategically situates our Club for upcoming initiatives, guaranteeing sustained financial stability and flexibility for the future.
In 2023, our Bond Coverage Ratio demonstrated a remarkable enhancement, achieving 100%. This signifies a substantial progress from 89.7% in 2022 and 82.2% in 2021. This favorable trend underscores our unwavering commitment to financial responsibility and sustainability.
In adherence to our commitment to enhance the Member experience, our Operational Capex reached NT$4.5 million, while Project Capex amounted to NT$6.2 million in 2023. These strategic investments have empowered us to upgrade facilities and introduce new benefits, reaffirming our Club's position as a premier destination for member satisfaction. Heading into 2024, the Club enjoys a robust financial position, providing the impetus to explore fresh opportunities for service enhancement, equipment upgrades, modernization, and potential expansion. The Finance Committee, in collaboration with pertinent committees, will meticulously assess and approve project proposals. Simultaneously, the elected Board of Governors will oversee and monitor these projects, ensuring their successful realization from inception to completion.
I look forward to your active participation and engagement at the upcoming AGM, where we can address any queries or concerns you may have. Wishing you a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead.

The American Club bids farewell to William M. Funk III who passed away on January 7, 2024, at the age of 80.
by Kimberly and Camille FunkBill was President of the ACC five (5) times - 1988, 1995, 1996, 2001, and 2003, making him the longest-serving president in the club’s history. He was a very popular and gregarious man who truly cared about people and demonstrated it, by his actions and demeanor. He could be seen, on any given day, conversing with members and staff.. always striving to make the American Club a better place for everyone.
A man of diverse experiences and countless stories, Bill's extraordinary life encompassed a love of education, military service, travel, career, and of course family.
Bill completed his undergraduate education at the University of Madrid, the Centre Universitaire de Mediterranean, and the University of Maryland, majoring in International Relations and minoring in French and Spanish. He also obtained an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management. In 1967, he volunteered for Officer’s Candidate School in the USMC and married the love of his life, Catherine Kennedy.
Commissioned as second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, Bill served as a Platoon Commander in the 1st Battalion 8th Marine’s and was later assigned to the Defense Language School to study North Vietnamese for 47 weeks. In 1969 he was sent to Vietnam as an Interrogator Translator.
Post-military, Bill’s business career took him back to Asia. In 1975, it brought him to Singapore as the Southeast Asia manager for McCulloch Corporation, which was later acquired by Black & Decker.
His professional journey continued, leading
him to Taiwan in 1978 to open Black & Decker's presence there. Meanwhile his wife Cathy contributed to the community in Taiwan as an educator, eventually becoming the principal of Taipei American School's Middle School.
In 1983 William accepted a new role with American Tool Inc. where he flourished for two decades, rising to the position of Vice President Asia Pacific region.
In 2003, still based in Taiwan, he joined Asia Inroads Ltd. as Executive VP and continued to travel and meet with customers within the hand tool import/export business.
Retirement beckoned in 2008, bringing Bill and Cathy to America, where they settled in Portland, Oregon. A couple years thereafter, and much to their delight, Bill and Cathy were relocated to London when Cathy was invited to become an interim Principal at the American School in London and Bill thoroughly relished in his role of traveling spouse.
In 2015 they returned to Portland permanently. Tragically, Cathy's passing in 2019 marked a profound loss. Thereafter, Bill filled his time researching and creating elaborate meals, hiking, reading, writing poetry, and visiting with friends and family.
Bill leaves behind a legacy carried by his daughters Kimberly and Camille, their husbands, Richard Hasapis and Thomas Eckert, and his cherished grandchildren, Noah and Georgia Eckert.
In honoring Bill, we remember a man of strength, intellect, pride and most of all, humor, whose journey touched lives across continents. May he rest in peace, his spirit enduring in the hearts of those who knew him, reunited with his wife Catherine.

On January 30, gathering in front of the Shuanglian MRT Station, the drizzle didn't seem to affect the groups' jolly atmosphere at all, with everyone already fully engaged in friendly conversations with their group mates.
The tour's focus was to introduce how local Taiwanese prepare for the Lunar New Year, and we started at the traditional market, nearby the Shuanglian Station. Our tour guide, Ivy Chen, an expert cooking teacher for expatriates and foreign travelers since 1997, also collaborates with The Community Service Center to conduct tours to help expatriates to familiarize themselves with their newly adopted nation. And today, Ivy also shared her culinary knowledge and answered all our questions about the local lifestyle as they apply to many other traditional holidays, where food rich with flavors and meanings play such an important part in our celebrations.
For example, local Taiwanese—before the most important Lunar New Year’s Eve Dinner—their ancestors are first to enjoy the feast. which is done in the form of worship. The essential food in this ritual is called “The Three Sacrifices 三牲 ”, which consists of three types of meat that Taiwanese have been consuming for over 400 years: "pork, chicken and fish". Interestingly, Chinese speakers who use a large amount of homophones to form puns are highly welcomed, especially in festive occasions for the purpose of pursuing luck. From the Three Sacrifices, one can see the famous word play in traditional Taiwanese culture: pork in Chinese sounds like “ZHU” similar to “everything”, to express “everything” goes well; chicken sounds like “home” in Taiwanese; and fish sounds like “surplus”, as to wish for a bountiful new year. Ivy added, besides fresh meat for the Three Sacrifices, cured meat is also a well-loved food, with regional specialties.
Ivy introduced more fun with 'play-on-words' while leading our group through the traditional market at Shuanglian, such as persimmon for safety, mustard leaf for longevity, celery for diligence, bamboo shoot for promotion, and a winter radish, also known as daikon for good luck — the list goes on and on. Not just words, the color red was also an indispensable element while preparing for Lunar New Year. If you want to start your New Year right, don’t forget to add some auspicious red color to your clothing, decorations or even the food you eat. Later, our group arrived at a street of several religious relics and incense stores where we learned about the deeply spiritual side of Taiwanese culture. For example, on the rice bowls which people serve to their ancestors, local people place a pair of flowers made from red paper as an invitation. Moreover, Taiwanese use The Yellow Calendar ( 黃曆 ), which is a traditional divination guide and almanac for important occasions, such as the most suitable dates and time to worship their ancestors.
Finally, we came to the climax of our day tour: the gorgeous historical Dihua Street, also known as the most popular grocery market to shop for Lunar New Year's goods. With less than 9 days to the holiday, Dihua Street has officially entered its busiest time of the year. For tourists, it was almost impossible to see everything because of the street’s massive amount of festive products, but every step unveiled a surprise. Shops and vendors proudly presented their high quality products and generously gave out samples for whoever passes by; pedestrians waved at our group and everyone gave us a friendly smile; even the drizzle was gone and the sun came out. After learning so much about the profound meaning of Lunar New Year, maybe it was also part of the preparation for the holiday— to bring out the positive vibe to your surroundings!

As we sent away the year of the rabbit and welcomed the year of the golden dragon, our annual Lunar New Year Calligraphy Booths were held on January 14 with overwhelming support from our Members. Once again, all the spring couplets were sold out quickly on the event day. This year, we had 10 calligraphy masters creating beautiful, exquisite pieces next to our decorated money tree with some traditional treats and Fang Cha for all to enjoy. All the donations went to Institute for the Blind of Taiwan’s vocational massage training program to help the visually impaired regain their livelihood skills, and then contribute back to society and help others.

A vanity walk on the red carpet of Cannes. Knocked on the wrong doors. Naively tried to crash the gate of the arrived. Met his Waterloo. Ended his wild ride. Retreated into the shadow of Taipei, waiting peacefully for the maker’s recall. …… The TRAIL LEFT by JOHN SUN
