Message

Injay Tai

Dear Fellow Members,

As we transition into the vibrant summer months, I am delighted to share with you a comprehensive update on the exciting developments and ongoing initiatives within our Club. This mid-year reflection provides an opportunity to highlight our collective achievements, outline strategic plans, and celebrate the spirit of our community.

Firstly, I am pleased to announce the success of our recent Annual Board Retreat, a pivotal strategy meeting that allowed us to conduct a thorough self-audit and address several key membership issues. One significant outcome is the introduction of an interview process for prospective Members, ensuring that we maintain the high standards and camaraderie that define our Club. This new process will be launched in September. Additionally, the Food and Beverage Committee and Management benchmarked our restaurant pricing against comparable restaurants in our area. Our aim is to offer competitive options that are 10-15% below the competition, enhancing our Members' dining experience without compromising quality.

In our continuous effort to maintain and enhance the Club's facilities, several projects are underway. Notably, we are addressing essential infrastructure needs, including the recent connection to the city sewage, which enabled us to upgrade Sigis Deck and the car park. Renovations for the California and San Francisco Rooms are in progress, with detailed plans available for your review on the display boards.

Furthermore, we are excited to announce the

implementation of a new website that will provide a more user-friendly and interactive online experience for our Members. This is in progress and will be launched towards the end of the year. We are also going paperless with our billing process, in line with the adopted UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As the summer heat intensifies, the upgrade of our 38-year-old air conditioning system is a priority. Due diligence and a transparent selection process have been carried out, and we will have a new system before the end of this year, ensuring comfort throughout our premises while being more efficient and energy-saving. Looking ahead, we are actively planning for the 2025 renovation of the Rendezvous, Lobby, Market, and Pro-shop areas, aiming to create welcoming and modern spaces for all to enjoy.

Governance remains a cornerstone of our Club's integrity and functionality. This year marks the first review of our protocols since 2010, with a focus on enhancing the roles and responsibilities of our Committees. To foster a deeper understanding of our Club’s governance, we have a comprehensive induction process for new Members and Board Members alike. The new Committee Protocols will ensure that all Committee Members are wellinformed and equipped to contribute effectively to our community.

As many of you embark on summer travels, I encourage you to stay connected with the Club through our digital platforms. Whether exploring distant destinations or enjoying a staycation, remember that our Club remains a place of connection, relaxation, and enrichment.

Thank you for your continued support and active participation in making our Club a thriving and dynamic community. Together, we look forward to a summer filled with memorable moments and shared successes.

Warm regards,

President

GENERAL MANAGER’S

Peter Wood Message

Dear Members,

Following the President's update, I would like to provide further details on the ongoing projects, upcoming events, and important initiatives that reflect our commitment to maintaining and enhancing your Club.

Maintaining and Enhancing the Club

Firstly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all Members for your patience during the recent maintenance works, including the sewage connection, upgrade of Sigis Deck, and car park improvements. These essential projects, though inconvenient at times, have significantly enhanced the Club facilities.

The refurbishment of the California and San Francisco Rooms, which had not been updated for 16 years, is also well underway. We are excited to introduce an LED wall in the California Room, offering an enhanced visual experience for events, movie nights, and presentations. This upgrade promises clearer displays, energy efficiency, and a modern touch to our beloved spaces.

Board Retreat

The recent Annual Board Retreat was integral in aligning Management KPI’s with Committee goals. A significant outcome is the new interview process for prospective Members, set to launch in September. This process will involve the sponsoring Member, ensuring a warm and personal introduction to our community. Additionally, our waitlist remains strong at 330, reflecting the Club’s desirability and the value of Member referrals. We are grateful for your continued support in bringing new faces to our community.

Events

We have an exciting lineup of events this summer. The 4th of July Pool Party is just around the corner, promising a day of fun and celebration. Throughout the summer, we have planned various activities for kids at the pool and pop-up events to keep things lively. Mark your calendars for Friday, August 2nd, as we celebrate International Beer Day. This is an adults only pool party, featuring a wide selection of different types of beer, great food, and a DJ. Last year's event was a huge success, and we look forward to another fantastic gathering.

Food & Beverage

The Food & Beverage team continues to face staffing challenges, often relying on students to meet demand. Despite these challenges, we are focusing on value. On the Terrace menu, there is hardly a price increase, and we are 10-15% below the benchmarked competition. The same concept will follow through with Gyoson and Sigis.

While we cannot compare directly with smaller single-item restaurants, our diverse menu and quality offerings stand out. Our wine list is also noteworthy, with a new variety-based approach and a premium list marked up by only 10%. The positive reception of these new concepts has been encouraging.

Traveling in the Summer

For those of you traveling this summer, don't forget to visit our Reciprocal Clubs. You can find a comprehensive list on our website or enquire at the front desk. These partnerships allow you to enjoy the comforts of home and the camaraderie of our Club, no matter where you are in the world.

Thank you once again for your continued support and engagement. Our community thrives because of your active participation and dedication. I look forward to seeing you at the Club and at our upcoming events.

Practical Mandarin Made Easy: Survival Chinese Program at the Community Services Center

For international residents navigating the complexities of life in Taiwan, learning Mandarin Chinese can be an intimidating prospect. Balancing professional obligations, cultural acclimation, and the demands of daily life while attempting to learn a new language can be an overwhelming endeavor, particularly for those unsure of where to begin their linguistic journey. Fortunately, the Community Services Center in Taipei offers a comprehensive Survival Chinese program tailored specifically to the needs of the international community.

The Survival Chinese program is a pragmatic course designed to address the unique challenges faced by adults living in Taiwan. With all course materials provided, the curriculum is adaptable, catering to the specific requirements of each class. Employing an audiolingual and task-based teaching methodology, the program emphasizes the development of grammatical and phonological proficiency in both speaking and listening. In-class activities and homework assignments are crafted to be both practical and applicable to real-world situations.

The Survival Chinese curriculum was developed by Gloria Gwo, one of the earliest employees at The Center. In the 1980s, Gloria identified a need for a practical Chinese course that catered to adults living in Taiwan. At the time, university-level Chinese courses primarily focused on student life, with little attention paid to the day-to-day concerns of adults, such as managing a household, raising children, and navigating

daily interactions. Gloria's pedagogical philosophy is rooted in the belief that learning should be accessible, straightforward, and enjoyable. Homework assignments are designed to be both task-based and practical. "I will ask students to go out and buy a coffee or a drink on their own," Gloria explains. "Last week, we made a reservation at a restaurant in class. One student booked a table. Another student made a reservation the day before, and today she canceled it. It’s less scary when you all do it together. Everyone can help.”

The Community Services Center is a non-profit organization that offers an array of services such as mental health counseling, activities, classes, tours, and speaker events to the international and foreign community in Taiwan. The Center is also a licensed mental health center and a licensed intern facility dedicated

Photo

to supporting the mental health needs of the international community. Their licensed therapists, consultants and our interns provide professional, confidential care in English to those in need. The Center also produces an online magazine called Centered on Taiwan that offers a platform to share inspiring Taiwan-centric stories to worldwide viewers across Taiwan, the US, the UK, and Europe.

As one of The Center's longest-serving employees, Gloria possesses a unique perspective on the evolution of Taiwanese society and the foreign community. Prior to her tenure at the Center, Gloria taught English to foreigners at international companies. Many of her family

members are also educators, and she first embarked on her teaching career through her aunt's language school. Gloria's passion for teaching stems from the opportunity it affords her to learn about the world and experience new cultures through her students.

For expatriates seeking to embark on their Mandarin learning journey, the Survival Chinese program at the Community Services Center is an unparalleled resource. For those who are interested in registering for the Survival Chinese program, check out the Community Services Center website for all levels of Survival Chinese starting from September 2024.

RIVER CLEANING

at ZhuWei on May 11

Continuing our river cleaning efforts from last year and in alignment with our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) guidelines, our dedicated Members joined forces once again under the guidance of the Society of the Wilderness (SOW) to clean the Zhuwei riverbank. Despite the hot and humid conditions, we managed to collect 182 kg of garbage within an hour. The trash ranged from plastic bags and bottles to baskets of Styrofoam, and we even pulled a blanket from the riverside mangroves. With nearly 20 participants, we collected twice the amount of waste compared to a previous, much larger group organized by SOW. While our contribution may seem small in the context of the entire Tamsui River, we are committed to our goal and hope to inspire others, especially younger generations, to be more mindful of their daily waste and the use of disposable items.

Bricks of Hope

The Journey of ACC's LEGO Donation

Many of you will probably remember the Earth Month LEGO Drive last year at the American Club. It was a huge success thanks to the tremendous support from our Members. You might wonder what happened to those LEGOs, so once again, we invited the founder of The Regivers, Will Chen, to tell us about their journey and share their stories.

Studies have shown that playing with LEGOs fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which lay a stong foundation for Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning in children. This was the initial motivation for Will when he began his mission to recycle and reuse LEGOs by donating them to rural schools and children's homes to support their education. However, as Will delved deeper into this initiative and connected with others who shared his vision, he began to discover a wider range of impactful applications.

Targeting the right people and the right groups who actually need these LEGOs was the second task. In terms of finding communities in which to donate the Legos, Will initially relied on his own research and reached out one by one on his own, which took up a lot of his time and frustration occurred sometimes. However, he soon realized the effectiveness of connecting with experienced philanthropists. This led him to discover communities such as rural schools, children's homes, institutions aiding delinquent youth, and hospitals. The surprising discovery that LEGOs could be used therapeutically in hospitals added new dimensions to the initiative, expanding its reach and impact.

NTU student volunteering group teaching and interacting with kids from aboriginal school in Hualien
Let's build a place of hope, one brick at a time!

Regarding the support he received, Will reiterated his deep appreciation of ACC Members’ generous donations at the LEGO Drive last year, which was more than enough to supply to a long list of beneficiaries. Will also felt grateful to receive valuable help and guidance from a few mentors during the early stage. Firstly, the Chairman of ReUse.org., through the introduction by ACC, gave Will guidance and connected him with their network of rural schools throughout the island. Secondly, Dr. Stacey Mattison from Salt Collectiv. who played a crucial role by connecting Will with 7 international schools and providing invaluable assistance in various aspects. Lastly, our own club member Edward Wang and his family, contributed passionately to this cause from day one. Will commented that sometimes the impact of a good deed we do takes time to come to fruition, and sometimes the impact can affect ourselves in a very personal and emotional way. Those LEGO donations have reached 5 elementaries from Eastern and Southern Taiwan, 4 youth/children’s homes, and 7 hospitals. At NTU Children's Hospital, The ReGivers donated two boxes of new Legos to their Intensive Care Unit, where they care for terminally-ill children and those with severe illnesses requiring lengthy hospitalization. The psychological counselor at

NTU explained that Legos have become a vital tool in aiding the children's coping mechanisms. For those children who endured prolonged suffering and trauma due to their illness, Legos offered them a means of escape into their imaginative worlds, and at the same time express their emotions and moments of joy under their challenging circumstances. So even though sometimes heartbreaking goodbyes become inevitable, the time the children and their families have, playing LEGOs together will become a precious memory, encapsulating memories of resilience and creativity during difficult times. Among the numerous heartwarming stories, this one resonated deeply with Will. Learning about these stories made Will and his family’s belief in this cause even stronger.

Each journey of your donated used LEGOs brings new value and meaning to its recipients. These bricks can be recycled, reused, and passed onto many beneficiaries for years to come. As this concept gains awareness and more people get involved, more use cases and new applications will be discovered. If you would like to be part of this exciting journey, or wish to contribute in any way, Project ReGive would love to hear from you.

Footnote.

Did you know that the name 'LEGO' is an abbreviation of the two Danish words “leg godt”, meaning “play well”?

ANDREW FOOD BANK

May 24, 2024

We went to the Andrew Charity Association and learned that the association has been dedicated to supporting the disadvantaged, providing emergency relief, aiding in disaster recovery, and promoting education since 2011. On this special day, we volunteered in their most well-known 'Food Bank Project' and helped pack and load boxes and boxes of food aid. Nothing feels better than bonding with our coworkers through doing deeds together.
