October 2022

I initiated two meetings this summer, both for the first time in my tenure as club president. The first meeting was with the leaders at AIT, AmCham and ECCT, to discuss how we can collectively support the needs of our international community here in Taiwan, such as The Community Services Center (read more in our July issue). The second meeting, held online, was with the presidents at the American Clubs in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo, to exchange experience and share ideas. At each meeting, we all agreed to continue these conversations to find ways to work together toward our common goals.

Community Outreach and Events Committees
Board and Committees Update
The Community Outreach Committee chaired by Governor Elaine Chang met several times to define the Club’s charitable commitments to local organizations that will offer our unique international perspective, the Club’s existing resources, and also promote sustainability. Volunteering as English tutors to students in need after school is one such commitment. Peter lists other initiatives in more detail under his General Manager’s message.
President
finds you well and rested from the summer break. I learned that many of our members traveled abroad for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared. The Club felt quieter at times, particularly during July’s heat wave. But the shortened quarantine also brought many familiar faces back to Taipei. I enjoyed reunions with friends and family throughout the Club, and feel refreshed as the Board and Committees resume its activities in full this fall.
2
James Clark’s Dedicated Service
Even with a reduced summer schedule, the Board and the Committees, along with Management, continued the work toward fulfilling our Club’s mission. To name a few…The F&B Committee met to give Management feedback on recent efforts to reset and centralize our wine list, menu changes, bread offerings at the ACC Market, and proposed physical enhancements to improve service. The Membership and Rules Committee began review of the house rules for updates, consistency and clarity - a process that is long overdue. Committee members attended several focus groups conducted by our Marketing and Communications Manager, Hui-Yi Wang, to solicit suggestions for the redesign of our website.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Earlier this summer, Supervisor James “Jimbo” Clark tendered his resignation from the Board due to increased business travel that will take him away from Taipei for extended periods. Since joining the Club in 2006, Jimbo had served four terms as Governor, three of which as an officer on the Executive Committee. This recent service marked his second term as Supervisor.
International Community Partners
We are very grateful to Jimbo for his dedicated service to ACC, and will miss him for his depth of understanding and historical perspective on the Board. We also welcome H. Henry Chang, the Supervisor next in line, who has accepted my call to serve out the remainder of this term. Henry is a Partner at Baker & McKenzie and the current Chairperson for ECCT.
More updates will follow regarding Board activities in the coming weeks, in these pages and on our bulletin board! Welcome back!
Since last year, the Events Committee chaired by Governor Pradeep Mehrotra has led the effort to enhance our Club’s popular members events, as well as introduce new and creative activities for members and friends, including Trivia Nights. Our new Events Manager, Wendy Lee, pulled out all stops to include the awe-inducing Fire Dance at our July 4 th celebration. Recent pizza making, flower arrangement, and painting classes were well attended and indicative of the interests from our diverse Members’ community.

Community Outreach
The Community Outreach Committee is pleased with Management launching a series of initiatives. Our intent is to build a ‘charity-culture’ within the club and to implement more actions and activities such as those inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as set forth by the UN.
Dear Members, It is such a pleasure to see and feel the buzz around the Club now that many families are back after the summer break. We trust you had a good time and that you are enjoying catching up with your friends and families in the Club.
Peter Wood
Over these months, much has been happening, and the next few months will prove particularly exciting now that the Club’s Committees are back from their summer break.
GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
We are also working on more squash events, so do stop by the Pro Shop or chat with Ricky for more Additionally, details.in
Another couple of noteworthy events are coming up. We have a comedy night in the Rendezvous on 23 rd September; it should be great fun. Also, while 29 th October will bring the traditional Halloween Party, which every year is a much sought-after event, and this year we will also offer an adult only “Halloween Fun” DJ Party in Sigis complete with a special menu.
Sports Currently, it is planned to open the tennis courts in early September after the court resurfacing, so we will have a fun social tennis reopening party, a mini tennis tournament, and a match versus the Grand Hotel, all for September.
The Club is well known for many traditional events, but we are also looking to create new and fun ones. In August, we held the very successful “International Beer Day,” a fun BBQ event by the pool. But not all of them must be large events. With the great support of Maria, the Club President, we launched “Storytime” in the Library. Seeing the joy on the young faces was so rewarding; this is what a great Club is all about.
The Fall Tennis Championship is in October, and we have planned through December when we will be having our first “100+ Doubles Tournament,” where the age of the playing partners must be over 100. This promises to be a great inclusive Club tournament.
3General Manager
Food & Beverage
October, we have our Plunk Challenge in Fitness and the Annual Swimming OneChampionship.ofthethings we have tried to do over the summer is to make sure that as many of these as possible do not clash with other events or activities. With so much going on, it may be difficult, but we have tried hard to make sure that you will have the opportunity to enjoy as many as possible.
We now have a new centralized wine list available throughout the Club, a much-requested change. It has a broader selection with many house-wines. This has been well received, and we will use this as a foundation to offer an even broader wine selection. So please, do let us know your thoughts, and we will be working with Chef Andrea in Sigis to bring in more wines to compliment his new set menu that should be available in SomeOctober.other changes of note; Sigis now has a set menu for both lunch and dinner. Gyoson has a new menu. The Terrace has more promotional items to give you more variety. Bottle storage is now available in The Rendezvous so that Members can retain their wine/spirits obtained from the Club’s monthly promotions.
Events
I have, as usual, run out of room for my message, but I continue to say a big thank you for your comments, Your insights serve to strengthen Management’s resolve in making the Club a great experience for you your family, friends and guests.
One of our first initiatives is support for three charities – Faith For Animals, Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation, and Reuse.org.tw (Green Miracle). You may have already seen the donation boxes in the Club and some separate communications. These three wonderful charities help recycle books, PC/laptops and iPhones for better remote area education, sustainability, and animal welfare. This donation program will continue until Sunday, September 11 and so if you have not yet been able to participate, please do try. Other programs are planned, such as the annual Christmas Bazaar, including the Angel Tree, to place with a letter to Santa about how to combat climate change. This program looks exciting, and more information will be forthcoming.

ACC COMMUNITY
The Book Club does not just offer discussions; it takes measures to bring the books to life. The chef made a special ‘bouillabaisse’ dish for the Book Club members that was referenced in A Gentleman in Moscow. The members of the Book Club also hope to take part in other activities as a group, such as visits to museums and art galleries as well as talks from guest speakers. “We can include more activities like movies and films, lectures, trips to experience a day out in the country, visits to independent books stores, tea and coffee tasting, China craft-making and more,” said Jennifer Cheng, who has been an ACC member for 21 years.
New members are welcome to join the Book Club at any time. “It’s perfectly fine if they have not read our book for the month,” said Fanny Chan, who is one of the original members of the Book Club, “because we all have interesting life experiences to share.” It certainly puts less pressure on prospective members who wish to participate. “Syd runs the meeting like a book review. Basically you can be an active or passive participant. It is all up to you,” said Jessica Chan, who had already been running an online book club with people in Hong Kong for over a year when she was asked to join. The Book Club may also set certain topics and themes in the future. Mary Goodwin, who teaches literature herself, said, “It could be a kind of seasonal thing - scary books for Halloween, something historical around Thanksgiving, and so on.” To date, the Book Club has read and discussed 2034: A Novel of the Next World War by Elliot Ackerman and James G. Stavridis, A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. “It was one beautifully rendered scene after another,” said Alison Lin of A Gentleman in Moscow. The Book Club intends to meet again beginning in September after several members have returned from traveling during the summer. So far, there are a total of ten members, including Peggy Wang and Catherine Thomas. A list of the books that they have already covered and are planning to read next can be obtained from Emily, the Hair/Spa Library Manager.
ACC

Members have been joining The Book Club for reasons varying from being pulled in by their friends to just needing to get themselves offline and out and about for a change. Some joined simply because they saw the announcement and decided that was where they needed to be. The rewards of being a member of the Book Club are vast and varied. Some find it a great way to practice language skills. “It is rewarding how much it has pushed my English ability from having to read one book a month,” said Simon Pan, whose interests are varied and unique. Others enjoy the discussions and different viewpoints members bring to the table. “My impression is that our members think deeply about the books that they read,” said Book Club Lead Syd Goldsmith, who has published three books of his own. C Book is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the uncertainty of acclaim.”
5 urling up with a good book still remains one of our oldest and favorite pastimes. In spite of a global pandemic or perhaps as an inevitable side effect of it, ACC members have turned to reading and have even creat ed a Book Club. “The idea for me,” said Maria Ting, ACC President, “was always to build a community within our Club.” Since March 2021, the Book Club has been making a concentrated effort to meet in person and discuss various themes found in much-coveted popular titles.

She continued, “At this time I started thinking about getting a Master's degree in coun seling. When I looked at the course material, it involved mostly the translated text from the original. I decided to study abroad and took a leave for two years to finish my master's degree. Later, acting on encouragement from several professors, I started with Ph.D. As I moved along in my doctoral studies, I came to realize that clinical practice, rather than research, was my passion. So later I decided to become a clinician instead of pursuing a career in academia. I’ve been using my teaching skills mainly in doing outreach, e.g., giving invited talks or workshops.” She added with a smile.

The day when I started crying before going out alone to get my vaccine shot (I’m not afraid of injections), I realized I needed help. After a few sessions with my therapist, I could finally see light at the end of the tunnel. I wish I had known earlier about the Community Services Center, Taipei. Since its founding in 1987, the Center has been providing counseling, cross-cultural education, and life-skills programs to meet the needs of the international community in Taiwan. We contacted Dr. Emilie Yueh-Er Ma, who is involved with the functions of the Center, to talk to us about the Center and mental Dr.health.Emilie’s work mainly revolves around providing psychotherapy for clients, clinical supervision, and consultation. Due to her vast experience, she is frequently invited for talks and workshops about mental health. The Center offers services to people from different backgrounds- locals and ex-pats but mainly caters to the ex-pats community because of the language barrier they face.
IWritten by Amandeep Kaur
While sharing what piqued her interest in this field, Dr. Emilie joyfully reminisced, “I started my career as an English teacher. During this time, students would often reach out to me with the issues they faced. It could be related to studies, and sometimes their personal lives. I found satisfaction in helping them out. We (teachers) learn guidance during our teacher training but that’s not formal professional counseling.”
Dr. Emilie prefers the term “holistic health” over the misnomer “‘mental’ health.” Accord ing to her, mental health, emotional health, physical health, relational health, and spiritual health- all are integral parts of our overall wellbeing. Hence, they all need to be taken care of. moved to Taiwan right before the pandemic hit. A new country, a language barrier, and a lack of social interaction made me feel isolated. The girl who loved to strike conversations, and travel alone was now anxious about visiting the convenience store in the neighborhood.

Recently, she got married and gave birth to a baby. Being able to see her through the challenges and witness her grow through various stages of life is what makes it most Ourmemorable.”interview ended with an important takeaway for me. Dr. Emilie shared, “Visiting a counselor, whenever you need help or seek personal growth, is just like visiting a physician whenever you are unwell and for a regular health check-up. You may need it more frequently than you would like but that’s very natural.”
“I guess it is more so now because public figures and celebrities are talking about it more openly and freely than before. They are sharing their experiences on social media, which makes it easier for people to come out and speak up. We hear and see more conversations about mental health on TV shows and movies these days. I have also observed that when clients get needed help from counseling, they are more comfortable sharing their personal experience with their friends or family members and even refer others to therapy.” she enunciated. Dr. Emilie explains the reason behind more conversations about mental health-related issues than before. She believes that counselors also play a significant role in destigmatizing and depathologizing such issues and encouraging open dialogue. Talking to a counselor is just like talking to a friend or a confidante. It’s just that they are trained and they know how to help. For example, they ensure that everything that clients share is kept confidential, which helps people to feel safe to open up. Also, they keep a more objective view of clients’ issues since they do not have any conflict of interest as clients’ loved ones may have. When asked about the right point of time to reach out to seek professional help, she answered, “Whenever a person faces any kind of issue, they would use their available resources first. It could be a self-help book, online research, a friend, a family member, or anyone they trust. When they have exhausted their resources but the issue is still unresolved, they should seek professional Whathelp.”can we do to keep ourselves in good mental Answeringhealth?this

question she said, “To give a simplistic answer to this complex question, we can view well-being from the perspective of autonomic (dys-)regulation. We all have an autonomic nervous system, which has two branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic. If we compare our body to a car, the sympathetic branch is like the gas and the parasympathetic is like the brakes. When the nervous system is in a healthy (balanced and flexible) state, we will experience well-being.
“There have been countless experiences that are worth remembering. So I’d just pick a recent one. There’s a person whom I have been counseling on and off for about 9-10 years now. I started working with her when she was struggling with a relationship breakup in her twenties. Later, she continued to work through some family-of-origin issues. After a gap, she approached me again for more individual therapy and later couple therapy when she was having issues with her then partner, now husband.
So, if you think you or someone you know needs help, please reach out. Remember a useful phrase by John Green“There is hope even when your brain tells you there isn’t.”
With vast experience and deep knowledge in the field of mental health, she must have had many memorable and unique experiences. It was imperative to ask her about any such incident or moment that stayed with her or is memorable to her.
When it becomes chaotic, rigid, or both, we will experience dis-ease. Most of us are trained and even ‘rewarded’ by the society to stay mostly in sympathetic overdrive-feeling compelled to be ‘productive,’ constantly doing things. We may not know when or how to relax and rest-to activate the parasympathetic branch, to refuel and restore our mind and body. We tend to get stuck in lots of human ‘doing’ and forget how to be human ‘being.’”
She has observed that people have become more open to talking about mental health and holistic well-being over the past few years. More clients are coming up and sharing their issues.

Early Childhood Mamas SharingDads!)Group
As a mother of two young children (Toby is 6 and Kinsley is 1 years old), I’ve learned how important it is to have a group of fellow moms (and dads!) to connect with over raising children. I wanted to create a new group here at the American Club Taipei, “Early Childhood Mamas (and dads!)” as a platform for all of us with young ones to connect, share tips, laugh about experiences and create lasting memories for our families. I also wanted to create this platform to bring a variety of classes and experiences for the kids such as Music, Art, Yoga and a series of classes specifically for parents to learn a variety of tools to help us raise our young children (based off latest research). Especially as an expat here in Taipei, trying to navigate a new city while raising little ones can be quite difficult, but I hope that this group can make the experience easier and more fun! We are always looking to expand this list, so please let us know if there are other classes/teachers that might be a good fit. Most importantly, if you’re interested in joining the Early Childhood Mamas (and dads!) group, please join us for coffee/tea & snacks on September 15th. We will have more information on the kids’ classes, discuss best times/location for offering the classes, future events and more! Please sign up at the front desk or the nursery.
