PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Members will soon begin seeing signs of the many plans and projects currently underway this spring. The board of governors and management are excited about the changes coming the club's way and believe members will enjoy the club even more than before in the years ahead as a result. ACC food and beverage outlets are essential to fulfilling our mission of being your “home-away-from-home” and also critical to the financial health of the club. It is no surprise then that is where we are seeking to improve the most.

NEW FOOD AND BEVERAGE DIRECTOR

We are pleased to announce the hiring of our new food and beverage director, Mr. Ralf Dohmeier. Mr. Dohmeier has an impressive background, including many years as an executive chef in large five-star hotels.

We believe his food knowledge as well as his extensive experience in Asia make him the perfect person to step in to the unique role here at the ACC and raise the quality in all outlets. Mr. Dohmeier is particularly excited about bringing his ideas to the ACC right as we are renovating the restaurant that rests in the heart of the club - Sigis.

SIGIS RENOVATION UPDATE

We are happy to report that the renovation design phase of Sigis and the playroom/nursery area is completed. The next step in the process is putting the design out for bidding from contractors. We are on schedule to begin the renovations as planned on June 4.

FINANCIAL HEALTH OF THE CLUB

The board has made the financial health of the club a point of emphasis in forward planning. While the club is managed well and is continuously improving, like with any family budget, there are areas in which we can improve our position. The club's cash reserve comes essentially from bonds and operating income. As a member-based non-profit club, our operation goals to attain surplus primarily focus on maintaining a healthy cash reserve for rainy days. Through the hard work of previous boards and our GM, we have improved most of our facilities and now forward planning will be shifting towards achieving better financial status. We will work towards improving the club's cash position in protection against any unforeseen calamity. The need to improve our cash position is also due to our lower-than-desired insurance coverage for building damage in the event of a major accident such as fire or earthquake. Insurance coverage and our current cash holdings do not offer enough protection. A financially healthier ACC will ensure our sustainability over the long run.

GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

Todd Bretzlaff

April offered the perfect weather to host our very first Junior’s Tennis Championship. We were able to enjoy a weekend of some really good tennis from our young and upcoming junior members. I was amazed to see how good so many of the children that I have seen grow up in the Club have become and it was clear that the parents were all proud of what their children were able to achieve.

You likely noted that we removed the elevated seesaw swing at the outdoor playground as many members raised concerns with the safety of this equipment and we are actively looking for an alternative piece of equipment that will safely fit within the space. We just completed the rectification of the second squash court wall and it is now back to the high quality standard that you would expect. And finally, based on feedback from all of you, we are in the process of simplifying the guest registration process to only require members to enter the number of guest or personal employees; guest names will no longer be required.

With the renovation of the Sigis and children services area coming online in June, we have been busy working with the selected designer to finalize the plans and material selection in order to send the construction tender out for bidding. In the meantime, we are also working closely with our kitchen team designing an all-new menu that will promise to elevate the dining experience and create a new feeling with a more contemporary and modern feel. The timing of the new outlet is also perfectly aligned to the introduction of our new F&B Director, Mr. Ralf Dohmeier. Originally from Germany, Ralf has worked in the food & beverage industry within Asia and Australia for over 25 years, with a majority of his experience in the kitchen. He is also very familiar with Taipei from working with the Grand Hyatt - Taipei as the Executive Chef before moving to Korea where worked with the Grand Hyatt, the Four Seasons and most recently consultancy for a group of 5-star hotels. We look forward to Ralf’s culinary expertise to add the right finesse to our newly renovated Sigis dining and help raise the standards of our F&B across the board.

In addition to planning for the upcoming renovation work, April was a very active month for activities. Leveraging off last year’s success, approximately 250 members and friends enjoy our Children’s Easter Party where the events team did a fabulous job offering many new crafts and activities that gave the party a new fresh feeling to the members. The children enjoyed our Spring Break Sport’s Camps focusing on both tennis and swimming which was just in time for the Juniors Tennis Championship. Then on April 24th the Club hosted a party for all the long standing members who have faithfully supported the Club for a consecutive 25 years. We sincerely thank all of these members for the wonderful support and dedication that they have given to the Club over so many years.

The Parent & Child Doubles Championship will start on May 11th. Last year’s event was a huge success and we look forward to families sharing wonderful experiences together out on the court. Then the weekend of May 12-13th promises to be packed with plenty of activities including an Art Exhibition and Cocktail Party in the lobby on Saturday - a special Mother’s Day set menu in Sigis for the weekend - a crafts activity to make a special gift for mom and then our special Mother’s Day Sunday Brunch in the California Room. On May 20th we will hold another children’s cooking class to learn how to make decorated sweet buns and finally at the end of May, we will take members to explore the secret tunnels underneath the Grand Hotel.

With summer right around the corner, we would like to remind members of a few important rules to help ensure an enjoyable environment for all. Flip-flops and tank tops are not permitted in the Rendezvous, Gyoson or Sigis Dining Outlets. Children who are over 90 cm tall are not permitted in the opposite sex bathrooms or locker rooms and children less than 18 years of age are not permitted in the indoor Jacuzzi located between the men’s and ladies tennis locker rooms.

We appreciate your continued support as we strive for continuous improvement to reach our vision as the “Best Club in Asia”.

Thank you to our Members and Volunteers for ACC’s 2018 Easter Party Thank you Members for supporting our Pie Booth Event held on April 1. A modest NT$1,701 benefit donation to The Child Welfare League Foundation in Taiwan (兒童 福利聯盟文教基金會) was made possible from this year’s Easter Pie Booth Event.

Special thank you to our Board Member Mr. Mar and Mr. Philip for willing to be “targets” for the children’s pie throwing game!

Also, thank you to our Board Member Mrs. Faye Angevine, Mrs. Anita Clark and the Girl Scout Team who helped us to run the Easter Booths and Check-in Section; and to our teen member Redmond Welbourn, who handled the egg hunt activity really well. ACC SWIMMING

FOR AGES 2.5~12 Baby Swimming (May to October)

(For ages 4 months to 2.5 years) (Class size will be a minimum of 2 babies and a maximum of 6) Each Baby Swimming Lesson will be 30 minutes. Your baby will be taught water adjustment and basic swimming skills.

Please NOTE that each baby must be accompanied by at least one adult during each lesson.

Toddler Swimming

Bubble Maker & Submariner→We play and go under water.

Toddlers will be taught water adjustment and basic swimming skills like blowing bubbles while playing fun games.

Each toddler will become used to swimming underwater and will learn how to swim back to the poolside unaided, should they accidentally fall into the water.

Level 1 Pool Safety Swimmer

(For ages over 4 years including beginners) (Class size will be a minimum of 2 children and a maximum of 4)

At this level: The students will learn to maintain a stable breathing rhythm while swimming for more than 5 minutes and learn basic self-lifesaving skills.

At this level: Students will learn four strokes and be able to use one stroke to swim across the pool.

Monday & Thursday 4:30 - 5:00 pm & 5:00 - 5:30 pm (30min) NT$2,200 total per person for 8 lessons.

Level 2 Advanced Swimmer

(For ages over 4 years and already a pool safety swimmer) (Class size will be a minimum of 2 children and a maximum of 8)

At this level, students will learn four strokes and be able to use two different strokes to swim across the pool.

Tuesday & Friday 4:30 - 5:00 pm & 5:00 - 5:30 pm (30min) NT$2,200 total per person for 8 lessons.

Level 3 Rescue Swimmer

(For ages more than 4 years and already an advanced swimmer)

Learn valuable lifesaving, basic water safety skills, CPR and first-aid techniques while getting some great exercise.

Students will also learn several techniques and methods (without jumping into the pool) to save people in distress in the open water.

At this level, children will learn four strokes and to be able to use three different strokes to swim across the pool.

At this level, the students will also learn basic self-rescue skills, snorkeling, basic speed training and aquatic activities.

Thursday 5:00 - 6:00 pm (1- hour) NT$4,400 total per person for 8 lessons.

Level 4 Swim Master

(For ages more than 4 years and already a rescue swimmer) (Class size will be a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8)

At this level, children will learn four strokes and be able to use four different strokes to swim across the pool.

At this level, children will learn diving & turning skills, individual & relay medley skills.

At this level, children will be trained as a swim squad to improve their swimming speed and stamina.

S WIMMING S CUBA B ASKETBALL Group Lessons

SpeedMaster Training Course This group swimming is for adult swimmers and triathletes who are looking to keep fit or improve their performance in a fun, dynamic and comfortable team environment. The session is structured to cater for each swimmer’s ability and fitness level with swimmers being placed in lanes accordingly. The Adult SpeedMaster Swimming Squad is focused on developing swimming techniques, and race skills. Attendees will be challenged in a fun and exciting team environment. The squad is available to swimmers who are 18 years or older and already an advanced swimmer who can swim with more than two swimming strokes.

Limited to 10 swimmers per session. (Requires a minimum of one swimmer) Sign-up is open now.

Scuba Diving Lessons/ Discover Scuba Diving Lessons (For ages more than 8 years and already an advanced swimmer)

Now we are having Scuba Diving Lessons for ACC Members. It will be a group activity held in the ACC pool. Purpose of these lessons is to teach basic scuba diving skills as an introduction to the experience and enjoyment of diving and swimming underwater. The lessons will be conducted by PADI certified instructors.

NOTE! Parent’s participation is encouraged - enjoy the learning experience with your children.

The group lesson fee will be NT$1,200 per person for a 1-hour lesson.

Class size will be a minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 6 students.

Private lesson fee is NT$2,000 per hour. This course is by appointment only.

Water Basketball Games (May to October)

(For ages more than 6 years and already an advanced swimmer) (Game size will be a maximum of 10 players) Learn the basketball game rules and techniques for free and get lots of exercise and enjoy a refreshing pool basketball game!

Slampros Basketball Lesson Experience the fun and passion from learning basketball skills.

Students will learn all the dribbling, passing, shooting, tactics as a professional basketball player!

Persistence Interviews by ACC Member Mary Goodwin

If you’ve been watching social media in the last few years, you know that women worldwide are “reclaiming their time,” asserting their political, economic and social power in startling numbers. But anyone who has ever known a woman already has witnessed her power - to work, to create, to nurture, to uplift and to support. To persist!

In this interview series we explored the sources of women’s power, asking accomplished and interesting women: What is the source of your power?

What do you draw on to give you strength to continue your work? The answers we got from a diverse group of artists, businesswomen and athletes were as varied as the women interviewed. But all have persisted in pursuit of their dreams, and draw on experience - both good and bad - as a source of strength.

Experiencing the innate ability we each have to connect and change lives gives me strength and inspiration. Art is the visual language that helps me decode the world around me, through brushstrokes, colors and textures.

I happen to have a very good architectural pedigree. I never thought much about it: at MIT the coursework was difficult, and at Harvard, the atmosphere was obsessively competitive, but I assumed it was all just the process of being educated. Emerging from programs like that can only leave you with one conclusion: other people are a lot smarter or more talented than you are.

Despite how movies might portray architects, in reality it is meticulous work. In my earlier years practicing as an architect, I specialized in trying to make the design details neat and attractive.

I eventually made the transition from architecture to interiors: some might consider this a step down, but I found interiors more appealing in contrast to the comparatively impersonal nature of architecture.

Surprisingly it has been several men that I have encountered in the course of the profession who have encouraged/embarrassed me into becoming more confident about representing myself. Their comments always ran along the lines of "If I had your pedigree, boy the things I could do!!" Apparently I was underachieving, and on top of it, I wasn't happy. I realized I needed to focus on shaping my practice into something I found meaningful enough to justify all the time and stress it demanded.

Nowadays I go into a project expecting to become fond of my client. If you approach each project as an opportunity to learn, it isn't as frightening, even when you are biting off more than you should chew. If you look for the opportunity to positively affect the lives of the future inhabitants, then you have yourself a mission. If you think of yourself as someone who creates work for all the consultants, suppliers, and tradespeople involved, then they become a part of your team, and you take pride in being able to provide opportunities for them. I try to engage with all levels of people involved with my projects, and to personally overlook each aesthetic decision, and for this reason my firm and project load are probably never going to get larger than they are now. Since the time of its conception, nine years ago, Topia Design has only ever had a staff of two ladies, one being myself. My fellow professionals are a little surprised at how much we accomplish with just two, but I just see it as taking care of business.

PAT GALLANT - CHARETTE

Elite Distance Swimmer and world record holder as oldest woman to swim the English Channel.

My power comes from my life experience. Twenty-one years ago at the age of 46, I never imagined that I would become a marathon swimmer and set six world records in my sixties. Then tragedy struck my family. My youngest brother, Robbie, died of a heart attack at 34. My son Tom, 16, wanted to swim the Peaks to Portland, a 2.4 ocean mile swim, as a tribute to my brother. Surprising myself, I too took the challenge and on my very first open water swim I fell in love with the sport. At the age of 58, I attempted my first marathon swim -- a solo crossing of the English Channel. My swim was stopped 1.7 miles from the finish line of France due to adverse tidal flow. I learned more in my failed attempt of the English Channel then in any of my prior successful swims. I found the power within myself to persevere in a sport that I truly enjoyed. At 66, I returned to England and set the World Record for the Oldest Woman to swim from England to France in 17 hours and 55 minutes.

In my sixties, I set six world records for Oldest Woman to swim the English Channel (21 miles), North Channel (21 miles), Catalina Channel (21 miles), Tsugaru Strait (32 miles), Molokai Channel (26 miles), and Lake Ontario (32 miles).

Now at 67, I look forward to meeting new challenges in life. I have learned that power comes not only from success but from failure, too.

For me, in every stage of my life, I encounter different environments and challenges. My power comes from these various stages. When I was young, the source of my power was my parents; later, it was my husband, then children, then community. All in all, the source of my power is LOVE for others, and fulfillment for myself.

Complications can lead to disappointments; it’s the simple things in life that can bring happiness

GyĹŤdon for One Simmered Beef and Onion on Rice

Ingredients

Slice Beef Belly-100g / White Rice-250g Cooked Konnyaku Noodles-50g / Sliced Onion-150g Chopped Green Onion-20g / Chopped Garlic-10g / Olive Oil-20ml Soy Sauce-30ml / Mirin-10ml / Sugar-10g / Black Pepper-a pinch Water-100ml

Method 1/ Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium high heat, add chopped garlic and onion, cook the onions until tender.

2/ Add black pepper, beef and sugar cook until no longer pink.

3/ Add soy sauce, mirin, water and cooked konnyaku noodles, reduce the heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes.

4/ Add the chopped green onion before its ready then pour the mixture over the boiled rice before serving.
