Welcome Back!

It’s been a hot summer. I thought I was going to get a break from this heat heading out to the Northwest; Portland greeted me with a record 105F heat in August. I got a break from the steam room heat in Taipei and in return, I got a sauna in Oregon.

I would like to thank all of our staff who were busy hosting summer camps for the little ones and keep them all busy over the summer. We had many little happy campers.

A New and SAFE Kitchen Thank you for your patience during our kitchen renovation period.

At the time of writing, Terrace main kitchen is scheduled to back in operation second week of September.

Working with a disjointed and very old structure is challenging. Terrace kitchen had wiring, pipes, unsupported walls, holes and patches from multiple renovations over the last 30 to 40 years that needed to be addressed after the existing equipment and ceilings were removed. BOG and management decided to address some of the questionable structure issues to ensure safety of new kitchen moving forward.

Structure evaluation and enforcement added 4 weeks to the schedule. Additional unexpected problems surfaced after the demolition crew unearthed the floor, where unidentified old gas pipes and wirings added additional 2 week delay to the project. We were cautious in choosing when/how to push for progress.

Safety was our number one concern. House committee met with management and project team multiple times over the summer to ensure integrity of our new kitchen is at the utmost priority. A few weeks delay is a worthwhile wait in perspective of many years of good use of our new kitchen.

Terrace/Gyson new kitchen will have proper vendor delivery, receiving area, sufficient chill/frozen and dry storage space. The air, water, and people flow design are all in compliance with GHP (Good Hygienic Practice). Floor treatment is one of the most challenging features in any kitchen renovation; in addition regarding cleanliness requirements, we reference OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards in our floor treatment to ensure employee safety.

Food prep, cooking and serving flow will be more efficient. All of these improvements help bring ACC food service to HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) standard. This new kitchen will help the F&B team deliver improved quality, taste and safety in foods we consume at the club.

Next phase of the kitchen improvement project will be the banquet and bakery kitchen up on the second floor.

We expect this second half of the project to deliver similar improved result for our banquets and baked goods served.

Controlled Access For as long as I have been on the board, there have been discussions at the board level regarding member identification verification and security check at the entrance. Taipei is a safe city and our members have enjoyed the freedom of walking-in without showing our club ID cards for years. It’s not an easy privilege to surrender and the debate has gone on for years.

With many of the new technologies available in recent years, the BOG and management felt it is time to re-visit the possibilities of introducing controlled access to our club. In addition to the obvious improved safety feature delivered, controlled access provides multiple additional benefits, enhanced prestigious image, improved membership usage data that leads to better manpower distribution, just to name a few.

Security and MIS committee, along with management team has gone through a rigorous study on options available that are the least disruptive and most user friendly to ACC members. We mostly likely will be using some sort of RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentification) in conjunction with biotechnology that will not be intrusive nor increase manpower to implement. The system selected will be able to accommodate guests we want to bring to the club as well as ease of large groups accessing our ballroom upstairs.

If you have any concerns or questions about implementation of this system, please come to our Town Hall meeting scheduled on October 29th where there will be plenty of experts available to answer questions and address your concerns.

Organic Tuscany Wine Dinner Osteria by Angie menu will be available for two weeks from September 26th to October 11th. Limited seating Wine Dinner will be held on October 8th, organic Tuscany wine will be served. This will be one of the best-valued wine dinner in town. GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Summer went by in a blink as we had so many things going on over the summer, particularly the kitchen renovation, and now that everyone has returned from their summer break and settled back into their fall / school routine, we look forward to a busy season.

As announced in the weekly eNews, there were a few additional delays with the kitchen renovation and the new handover date is September 11 and the Club will commence operations from the new kitchen on the following Monday. The good news is that there were no additional costs to the Club for these delays and kitchen project is still within the NT$50 million budget. The phase II renovation work on the 2nd floor banquet kitchen, pastry and bakery will commence on September 19, immediately after the Mid-Autumn festival.

In September, Sigis will have the distinct privilege of providing a joint promotion with popular Osteria by Angie Restaurant chain from 26 September to 11 October. Chef Patrick Benedetti and his Osteria team will work with Chef Lam and our Sigis kitchen team to offer a specially designed menu of authentic Italian cuisine with Tuscany flair. It is a unique opportunity for the Members to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine from an Italian Chef while the Sigis team learns the subtle finesse of this great cuisine. In addition to the two week feature menu, the Club will offer an exclusive Osteria by Angie cooking class on Sunday, October 2 and an Italian Wine Dinner paired with organic Tuscany wines on Saturday, 8 October. We would like to thank the Angie group for their willingness to share their culinary knowledge with our Sigis team while allowing the ACC Members to enjoy this special experience at Club.

As we finish the year, we have a number of other very important projects to complete. Our highest priority is the implementation of a new digital television distribution system. This project is urgent since the analog services we currently use will cease by the end of the year. Once this project is completed, it will mean dramatically improved signal for all the televisions and monitors throughout the Club. The changeover will require a new signal decoding system and the upgrade of approximately 14 monitors / televisions for digital feed. So now you will be able to enjoy HD quality reception while enjoying sporting events at the bar or your favorite television show while exercising. We will also be updating the Club’s analog telephone system to a digital system.

In preparation for next year, the Club hopes to renovate the multi-purpose sports building (aka. Squash building).

This renovation project will mark the final phase of a 9-year renovation plan to bring the entire Club back up to high standard. For many members, this is a very important project as the condition of the facility is poor and for management it offers a tremendous opportunity to improve usage in this area and increase Member value. As part of the renovation, the two deteriorated squash courts will be refurbished. In the multi-purpose court, we will install a retractable basketball backboard which will allow for basketball “on demand” which was one of the most frequent requests from Members on last year’s Member survey. On the second floor, we will be convert the space to a fitness studio with a proper cushioned wood flooring which is desperately needed for additional fitness classes such as aerobics, Pilates, yoga, TRX, spinning cycles to accommodate the significant waiting list of Members hoping to take part in these extremely popular classes. This space will also be set up for cross fit classes, the latest craze utilizing body weight, gravity and natural resistance to develop core strength, agility and coordination.

The plan to introduce ‘membership controlled access’ has been in discussion, evaluation and planning for over a year now and we are nearing the final stages. For those of you that may not be aware, controlled access will provide a technology based system to validate and ensure that only Members and their invited Guests are able to enter the Club. Not only will this improve the safety and security within the Club, it will also provide a system to ensure that all guests are properly registered and to enhance the integrity of ACC as a private club. The Security Committee, chaired by Mr. Richard Yin, was established with the primary task of planning the best and most appropriate solution for this very important enhancement. We hope to implement this initiative in early 2017. The Security Committee has already conducted the first round of tenders from qualified vendors and we will provide a clear proposal for the system, the logistics and costs for approval in the upcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled for Saturday, November 12 and a Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, 29 October (two weeks prior to the AGM) which will provide Members with the opportunity to ask questions prior to the AGM. We are excited to let you experience the Club and our new kitchen facilities in the coming months during our never ending efforts to find new ways to make ACC an essential part of your daily lives.

Drop Off Service at Front Desk Are you Aware? Some of you may not be aware of our Member to Member drop off service. It’s a free service that ACC offers to our Members to drop off small packages and letters for other Members to pick up at the Front Desk Reception in the lobby. When dropping off small packages and letters the Club, please be aware that we cannot accept perishable goods or cash and we also request that all packages that are dropped off, are picked up by the other Member within 2 weeks. It is important to note that the Club will not take responsibility for items dropped off at the Club but will assist to secure these items by providing safety seal bags to keep the items more securely contained until they are able to be picked up. We must also request that Members do not have items of any sort delivered to the Club for pick up via any postal, delivery or courier service. We look forward to continuing to find better ways to serve all of you.

No Overnight Parking Please do not leave your car overnight in the ACC parking lot. During severe inclement weather damage may be caused to cars due to falling trees or other airborne objects. Please note that ACC does not take any responsibility for cars damaged while parked overnight in the ACC parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation.

Notice - ACC Market from Sep to Nov During the second phase kitchen renovation the Club’s pastry / bakery will be out of commission.

During this period of time, the Club will have to purchase all desserts and breads from an outside wholesaler from September 1, 2016 until the completion of the 2nd phase kitchen project.

We will still be able to provide Members with personalized cakes although we will need 7 days advance notice for such special orders during this time period.

Operating Hours for Rendezvous The Operating hours for the Rendezvous Bar is currently at 11:30 pm with a last call order at 11:15 pm. Occasionally Members will linger after closing hours as late as 1:30 to 2:30 am in the morning. These late nights creates potential issues with some of the new changes in the labor laws as well as creates potential safety concerns in our staff getting home. To avoid these concerns, the Board agreed that it was reasonable that all Members are expected to leave the Rendezvous Bar by no later than 12:30 am. Also, please be reminded to avoid drinking and driving beyond the legal limit in Taiwan, Members are always encouraged to leave their vehicles at the Club and take a taxi home.

May Name: Y. C. Yang 楊英進 Department: Janitorial

Y. C. Yang who is the Janitor with ACC’s Housekeeping Department, has been with us for only about one year and already he has the reputation of being a hard working employee. His director Mr. Lin says: “Yang not only works so hard, but he pays attention to the little details and is willing to take full responsibility in conducting his daily duties and he never messesup!” We also hear many complimentary remarks from other ACC staff members who fondly call him the Hard Working Silent Janitor with a warm and gentle disposition. We believe Yang definitely deserves the recognition of being one of ACC's valuable employees because of his great attitude that no job is too small. Housekeeping is one of the basic necessities but requires attention to detail in order to maintain the high hygiene standards and safety of the Club - after all “the devil is in the details“, and we take this opportunity to thank all of our team members for taking such good care the Club’s environment

General Fitness and Conditioning

Tennis is all about quick movements over short periods of time with short recovery periods.

Your off court training should prepare you for this. Train smart not necessarily hard.

Nutrition

Tennis nutrition is highly individual. Each player will differ physiologically and will need different compositions of nutrients based on their unique biology, training habits, game style and energy needs. Everyone burns different amounts of fats and carbs throughout the day, especially during training. Have a personalized plan.

The human body can only replace 1.5-1.8 liters of fluid per hour comfortably. Tennis athletes can sweat up to 3 liters per hour. The major electrolyte lost in sweat is sodium. Others that play a role are potassium, magnesium and calcium, to a lesser degree. Over drinking can be a problem as well. If an athlete sweats, losing sodium and replaces the fluid with water, the electrolyte content of the blood becomes diluted which results in health consequences. This is termed water intoxication or hyponatremia.

Introduce routines between points and changeovers as this assists conservation of energy.

Those players that are highly talkative, emotional will burn a lot more energy and may result in more problems due to more calories being burned each minute which requires more energy.

The nervous system may help to reduce the likelihood of muscle cramps.

Exercise related to muscle cramping suggests that muscle overload and neuromuscular fatigue cause an imbalance between excitatory impulses from muscle proprioceptors that control length and tension in muscles. Work on better strategies of relaxation of the nervous system as this may help reduce the likelihood of muscle cramps.

Two Wheeled Passion

M

y love for riding bicycles began at an early age and has continued to grow especially in the past 8 years. When I was in 2nd grade my family was living in the suburbs of Sacramento, California. It was here that I first fell in love with riding. We lived in the typical suburban American neighborhood made up of strip malls and cookie cutter homes. Back in those days there were much less cars so it was relatively safe for children to ride bikes around the city. The bicycle became my main mode of transportation and in a way it was like my car. My parents were very liberal and allowed my brothers and me much autonomy. We used our bicycles similar to the way adults traveled around in automobiles. Instead of getting dropped off by car or bus we would ride to school. I also remember bicycling to cub scout meetings, violin lessons, and even the supermarket to pickup groceries for my mom. On weekends my friends and I would build dirt tracks with jumps and pretend to be professional BMX racers.

Many years later, while living in Los Angeles, I bought a beat-up mountain bike at a garage sale. Initially, the bike was meant for taking my toddlers around the local parks and neighborhoods. The more I rode that old bike, the farther and faster I wanted to go. The distances that I would ride at the time, although nothing to me now, seemed like a great accomplishment in the beginning. Within a couple of months I bought my first road bike and graduated from “dad riding bicycle� to cyclist. Riding became an obsession for me.

Soon, all I wanted to do everyday was to ride my bike for hours and hours without stopping.

Each person only has a limited amount of attention and on the motorcycle, attention is paramount to safety. Consequently, the rider is forced to focus on the present moment and unable to contemplate any other problems. So in a way, riding is similar to meditation because you can’t really think about much else except changing the gears and the road and traffic conditions ahead of you. Riding helps relieve my stress and enhances my mood. Every time I get home from a ride, I feel refreshed and happy!

2 years later, and entering my first mid life crisis, my love for riding kicked up a notch. I signed up for my first triathlon and began to train even longer on the bike to increase my endurance. For most of that first race, I struggled and told myself never again. Once I crossed the finish line and the pain was gone I was ready to race again. My favorite part of these races is the cycling leg. Since most of the races begin with a swim in the ocean, the bike course is usually routed along the coast, which is beautiful and scenic. My favorite bike course is at the Strongman Triathlon in Miyakojima, Japan. It’s 155Km and loops around 3 islands that are connected by bridges. The water is so clear you can see the coral and fishes while riding along the beach and crossing the bridges. To date I’ve finished over 20 races and continue to train daily.

My second mid-life came in the form of my obsession with motorcycles. It all began the day we rented scooters while on vacation in Thailand 3 years ago. After several days playing at the beach and an elephant trek through the jungle, we decided to tour the area by scooter. The serenity and relaxation of riding a motorcycle along the coast of the turquoise waters got me hooked. When we returned to Taipei, I got a motorcycle license and within a few months I bought my first motorcycle.

The difference between riding a motorcycle and driving a car or riding a bicycle is your focus of attention.

On a motorcycle the rider cannot allow his mind to wander or daydream because it’s necessary to concentrate on the traffic and road conditions.

Riding on two wheels has not only brought me health, but also some fortune, in the form of luck.

I’ve always considered myself to be quite lucky especially when it comes to finding things. There was the time in 8th grade at the old TAS campus in Shih Lin, while walking to class, I found NTD400 on the ground. Since nobody was around to claim it, I could have either brought it to the administrative office or just keep it for myself. Since I was in 8th grade and didn’t have much of an allowance, without much thought, I decided to keep it and spend it on food in the snack bar. Many years later while driving through a small alley in Tien Mu, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something lying on the road. I can’t explain, but something told me to stop and investigate. I pulled the car over and got out to have a look. It turned out to be a billfold of some sort with no ID but a stack of NTD$1,000 bills.

In total there was approximately NTD$35,000, and since it was more than 20 years ago, it was worth a lot more in today’s dollars. I had just graduated from college and wasn’t living “large” so you can imagine what I did with my new found “wealth”.

Fast forward to 2015, the year of the Goat which is my zodiac sign. Most Taiwanese, similar to my mother-in-law, believe that every 12 years when your birth year zodiac rolls around, your luck can change for the worse. So one must take precautions and “bai bai” to fend off and counter the bad luck. Courtesy of my mother-in-law I had double protection, the ritual of bai bai and a thin gold colored card to carry around in my wallet as a form of “added protection”.

I’m not sure if the gods answered my mother-in-law’s prayers for me or the gold colored card I had been carrying around in my wallet worked some magic because it turned out to be one of the luckiest years of my life.

In October after many months of analysis and sleepless nights I decided to buy a new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Harley hosted an event to launch and presale new models in October. I attended the event and ordered a brand new Softail Deluxe that was scheduled for delivery in December. At the same time, Harley Davidson was running their Test Ride and Win contest in the Asia Pacific Region to promote their Dark Street Custom line of entry level motorcycles. The Asia Pacific region is broken up into for markets, China, Australia/New Zealand, India, and other which includes Taiwan, Korea, and other South East Asian countries. To enter the contest you book a test ride online and go for the test ride.

During the test ride you are photographed riding their specified motorcycle and then the pictures are emailed to you.

You then pick one of the pictures and write a caption describing how you felt about the ride. The entrants are judged on their caption and picture.

The contest period lasted 3 months. Each month winners were chosen from each market and awarded a Rider’s Kit, which includes a couple of jackets and other apparel. The monthly prize winners are then judged against the monthly winners of other markets in the region and a grand prize winner is chosen.

In early November I found out that my entry was chosen for the monthly prize. I received a leather jacket, a meshed riders jacket, a shirt, and a baseball hat. This was the first time I had ever won any kind of contest, let alone a contest of this scale. To say I was overjoyed was an understatement, or so I thought. About a month later I received a call from Harley Davidson Asia in Singapore informing me that I had won the grand prize!!!! The prize included a motorcycle, US$9,000 in customization, a trip for 2 to Milwaukee (the city where Harley Davidson headquarters is located), and cash to cover my other traveling expenses. During the call, I was in shock and couldn’t say much more than thank you. For a week I could hardly sleep. This contest was based solely on the creativity of the caption, but it felt like I won the multi-million dollar Powerball Lottery Jackpot.

In April, my wife and I traveled to Milwaukee and received the full VIP treatment from Harley Davidson. We were treated to a guided tour at the Harley Davidson Museum, which houses motorcycles from every year since the company’s inception in 1903. In addition we were given tours of Harley’s factory (where the powertrains are built), as well as their headquarter offices, where we had the pleasure of talking to some of the employees in marketing so we can understand how the company operates. We also received quite an in depth tour at Miller’s Brewery that concluded with a taste test of three of their more unique beers. And as if all the above wasn’t enough, we got to see the Milwaukee Bucks play against the Indiana Pacers in the last home game of the NBA season. The trip ended on the final day at a local Harley Davidson dealership where I met with Harley’s senior designer, Dais Nagao. He redesigned the Iron 883 and is considered to be one of Harley’s top designers. Dais helped me customize my motorcycle. Since we both grew up riding bicycles we decided on an off-road Scrambler style, which basically looks like a BMX bicycle. The style is similar to the bicycles that I used to ride in Sacramento and riding the bike reminds me of my childhood.

There is not a day that goes by where I’m not riding through the mountains on one of my bikes. Motorcycle or bicycle it doesn’t matter because either one helps to relieve stress and puts me in a great mood. My two wheeled passion continues to gain momentum and is here to stay.
