The essential book of Hidden Portraits by thought-provoking artist Volker Hermes
Beautiful collection of contemporary art gone global through social media
Featuring commentary by leading academics Till-Holger Borchert and Professor Francesca Raimondi
A must-have reinterpretation of historical privilege through a very modern lens
Volker Hermes was featured by the Metropolitan Museum and Christie s in New York, and has shown his work at the National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland; the James Freeman Gallery in London; Museum Palazzo Merulana in Rome; and the Galerie Bräuning Contemporary in Hamburg
Volker Hermes: Hidden Portraits gathers the essential works by one of the most beguiling artists of the present era, in a very modern reinterpretation of historical privilege.
Using only elements of the original paintings, Volker Hermes masterfully alters photos of historical portraits to mask the faces of their subjects. With each figure concealed under their own ceremonial attire, these one-time elites quickly lose their individuality in a plume of decorations and accessories.
In this official collection, Hermes delivers his wry commentary on wealth, fame and social status with taut imagery, intense focus and a suitably shrewd sense of humour. His immaculately reproduced artworks are accompanied by the thoughts of German art historian Till-Holger Borchert and Professor Francesca Raimondi of Berlin s Institute for Philosophy, as well as the artist himself.
A must-have revision of classical portraiture from a celebrated digital creator.
Hermes s meticulously described collages pay homage to their sources while gently ribbing the social pretensions and ambitions of the courtly classes. Christopher Alessandrini, metmuseum.org
Volker Hermes, born in 1972, draws and paints powerfully and directly, with perseverance and a lot of humour. His pictures and drawings are always integrated into comprehensive projects, within which Hermes gets to the core of his subject in an almost scientific way. These projects include a multi-year preoccupation with the subject of portraiture and, more recently, with the subject of historical battle painting and seascapes. His works are always an expression of an intensive engagement with art. Thus his portraits do not serve the honour of their protagonists and the sea battles do not serve the glory of old seafaring. Hermes paintings bring fame and glory to art itself. His figures exercise the possibilities of painterly representation with impressive virtuosity. And there are no limits to these. Hermes combines linear conception with painterly gestures and watercolour-like painting with hard Edding drawing and shows himself to be a master in both fields. For him, painterly solutions must be derived from a fundamental (artistic) principle with an inner logic: If the viewer feels this even subconsciously, that's enough for me. You don't have to know everything, but you can feel a lot. Despite all the analysis, Hermes paintings should above all be enjoyed.

Publication accompanies a major exhibition in FOMU Antwerp, Belgium from September 28th 2024 to February 2nd 2025, Cindy Sherman Anti-Fashion
Showcases Sherman s photographic oeuvre from a new perspective, revealing the subject of fashion as the starting point for the artist s critical investigation of gender, stereotypes, and our attitude to aging
This book reworks the Anti-Fashion book published by Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
For almost 50 years, the theme of fashion has been a constant in the work of US artist Cindy Sherman.Cindy Sherman AntiFashion is the first to focus on this close engagement with fashion and approaches her photographic oeuvre from a new perspective. In so doing, it sheds light on the interplay between art and fashion. For Sherman uses her numerous commissions from magazines and her collaborations with renowned designers as a constant source of artistic inspiration. This book reveals the subject of fashion as the starting point for the artist s critical investigation of gender, stereotypes, and our attitude to aging. The wide range of Sherman s assumed characters highlights the artificiality and changeability of identity, which now more than ever is shown to be selectable, (self-)constructed, and fluid.

Look back at the colourful career of trailblazing artist Sir Michael Craig-Martin RA Published to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy from September 21 to December 10, 2024
Sir Michael Craig-Martin CBE RA (b. 1941) is an important figure in British conceptual art, and among the most influential artists and teachers of his generation. Since his rise to prominence in the late 1960s he has moved between sculpture, installation, painting, drawing and print, creating works that fuse elements of pop, minimalism and conceptual art. His work transforms everyday objects from buckets and ladders to trainers, mobile phones and laptops with bold colours and simple, uninflected lines. Renowned as an art educator, he has inspired generations of artists, including the YBAs. This handsome book, the catalogue of the largest exhibition of Craig-Martin s work to have been mounted in the UK, contains thought-provoking texts by the critics Michael Bracewell and Richard Cork, and an illuminating conversation between the artist and the writer Carolina Grau.
Michael Bracewell is a British writer and novelist. Richard Cork is an art historian, editor, critic, broadcaster and exhibition curator. Carolina Grau is an art historian and independent curator who specialises in contemporary art.

The official catalogue of the Centre Pompidou s Surrealism Exhibition which begins in Paris, 4 September 2024 to 13 January 2025, and moves on to Spain, Germany and the USA
Featuring pages from André Breton s Surrealist Manifesto
Illustrated with 250 Surrealist masterpieces, including works by some of the world s most famous artists
Reversible layout
The defining book for the centenary of Surrealism.
From September 2024 to January 2025, the Centre Pompidou will celebrate the 100th anniversary of André Breton sSurrealist Manifesto. For the next two years, their unprecedented Surrealist exhibition will tour the art galleries of the world, accompanied by this special catalogue.
Perhaps more than any other artistic movement, Surrealism had a cataclysmic effect on the modern mind, changing forever the way we think about experiencing the world. By rejecting the gross linearity that typified several centuries of preceding artworks, the legendary Surrealists Magritte, Ernst, Carrington, Dalí, Tanning and so many others reached beyond the façade of that which is patently visible and found something more.
Like the great works that fill its pages, Surrealism offers a departure from singletrack thinking, with a multi-directional layout and an uninhibited design. Featuring original essays from leading academics and excerpts from theSurrealist Manifesto itself, this stands among the most essential Surrealist catalogues ever published.

Art About NASA
£20.00
Spectacular artwork showcasing NASA's accomplishments and missions
Includes a selection of paintings, illustrations and posters
Reveals the fruits of the NASA Art Program from the 1960s onward
The first book in the series, Art About NASA, with the next book showcasing logos and mission patches
The countdown has started! In 2025 and 2026, NASA will launch two missions to the moon and beyond. Not only will they go further into space than ever before, but they will seek to establish the first permanent moon base.
Space: Posters & Paintings: Art About NASA showcases a superb selection of paintings and illustrations recording the history of space exploration.
From as early as 1962, the NASA Art Program commissioned artists to capture the importance of their work by giving them unprecedented access to on-site life at NASA, from the technicians at work and the suiting-up of astronauts, to the launch sites. Originally created for educational purposes, the artworks also include incredible, stylised posters portraying humans ambitions far beyond our planet, among them astronauts working on the moon, space shuttles and far away planets. This book is a real treasure for all those fans of life beyond Earth.
For over 25 years, Bill Schwartz has been involved in the production, distribution, licensing and branding of high-profile entertainment content on a global basis. Along with licensing or acquiring thousands of hours of feature films, television series and documentaries, Bill has created and produced 20 broadcast documentaries, including Terror On The Titanic, Howard Hughes: The Real Aviator and Valkyrie: The Plot To Kill Hitler. Of all of Bill s productions, his passion project was Journey to Mars, a documentary about NASA s Viking Pathfinder, the first vehicle to explore the surface of Mars. The story, the trust and the investment required gave a true insight to the drama and courage of the people and technology at NASA. Thus, when an opportunity presented itself to create a book of inspiring photographs about NASA milestones, it was an offer too good to pass up.

Alison Wilding OBE, RA (b. 1948) is one of Britain's foremost sculptors, tracing the trajectory of her artistic evolution, this original publication provides the first survey of Wilding's output on paper
Lavishly illustrated throughout, featuring essays by Professor Anna Lovatt whose research focuses on the role of drawing in Conceptual Art and renowned curator and art historian Penelope Curtis, and an in-conversation with the artist by Rosie Cooper, Director of the Wysing Arts Centre
Best-known for her ambitious sculptural works, this volume explores how Alison Wilding s compelling drawing and extensive use of collage have been integral to her development for five decades. Whilst sharing affiliations with Wilding s three-dimensional work, the artist s drawings often in series expand upon her investigation of surface by using a distinctive formal language. The works are characterised by a strong interplay between representation and metaphor, incorporating a range of materials from ink to silicone fluid to visualise and test ideas of mass and depth. Alongside essays by Anna Lovatt and Penelope Curtis, and an in-conversation with the artist by Rosie Cooper, this full-colour survey of over 300 illustrations offers the opportunity to track subtle correspondences in forms and concepts between historic and recent series of works. This publication was conceived by gallerist and Ridinghouse founder Karsten Schubert.
Penelope Curtis is a curator and art historian and the former director of Tate Britain in London and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. Curtis has written widely on 20th-Century British sculpture, on European art and architecture of the inter-war years, and on many contemporary sculptors. She is author of Sculpture 1900 1945: After Rodin (OUP, 1999) and Patio and Pavilion: The Place of Sculpture in Modern Architecture (Ridinghouse, 2007). Anna Lovatt is an Associate Professor at Meadows School of the Arts, and the author of Drawing Degree Zero: The Line from Minimal to Conceptual Art (Penn State University Press, 2019). Lovatt s research focuses on art of the 1960s onward, particularly the role of drawing and diagramming in Conceptual Art, Land Art and Minimalism. Rosie Cooper is the director of the Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridgeshire, she was previously Head of Exhibitions at De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, and Head of programmes at Liverpool Biennial.

New edition of the only book to date to comprehensively document the early work of celebrated Swiss artist HR Giger Features paintings and drawings by HR Giger that are rarely published or shown in public displays Academy Award-winner HR Giger is the creator of the legendary movie monster Alien and arguably the most distinguished representative of Fantastic Realism
Swiss surrealist artist HR Giger (1940 2014) achieved international fame in 1979 for designing the fantastic creatures and eerie environments that terrified moviegoers in Ridley Scott s science fiction film Alien. Yet before these iconic creations made him a celebrity and won him an Oscar for visual effects, Giger was already highly regarded in the international art world for his unique freehand painting style and biomechanical dreamscapes.
HR Giger: The Oeuvre Before Alien 1961 1976, first published in 2007 and now becoming available again in a new edition, is the only book to date to document the artist s lesser known, but no less impressive, early work. This lavishly illustrated volume traces Giger s career from his education as an architect and industrial designer at the Zurich College of Art to the development of his ink drawing and oil painting technique and his eventual breakthrough as one of the foremost artists of the fantastic realism school. Featuring many unpublished or rarely available early paintings and drawings, and accompanied by an essay by noted art historian Beat Stutzer, this volume juxtaposes Giger s paintings with works by his predecessors, including Ensor, Fuseli, Goya, and Piranesi.
HR Giger: The Oeuvre Before Alien illuminates the mind of a visual genius whose first artistic experiments were decades ahead of their time.
Beat Stutzer is a Lucerne-based art historian, writer, and curator. He served as director of the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur from 1982 2011 and as curator of the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz from 1998 2016.

This is the only book on Megan Rooney, a rising star within contemporary art today, that is currently available, and published to accompany an exhibition at Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, from June to October 2024
Produced in close collaboration with the artist
Lavishly illustrated with reproductions of an extensive new body of work as well as key paintings from the past five years
Three new essays which explore for the first time Rooney's practice to date, and her significance for contemporary painting
Megan Rooney: Echoes and Hours is the first monograph to explore the work of one of the most exciting emerging painters of her generation.
Rooney s sensuous and compelling paintings reinvigorate the power of abstraction. They embody a sense of boundless energy and life, whilst reflecting the artist s deep knowledge of painting and the potential of each viewer s encounter. Vibrant colour and gesture combine in dense, apparently infinite layers. Each canvas captures the ebb and flow of Rooney s process, from repetitive overpainting to the use of abrasives to remove pigment.
This major new book accompanies Rooney s first solo exhibition in the UK. It explores the variations in her painting practice across a series of new works made for the exhibition. The book illustrates these works including a temporary mural at Kettle s Yard painted directly on the gallery walls, as well as documenting earlier, formative paintings. Three newly commissioned essays and an interview with the artist in her studio explore Rooney s practice and the resonances of her hugely captivating work.
Megan Rooney (b. 1985, South Africa) works across a variety of media including painting, sculpture, installation, performance and language to develop interwoven narratives. She completed her BA at the University of Toronto followed by an MA in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College, London in 2011. Her work has been shown in solo museum exhibitions, including at the Salzburger Kunstverein, Salzburg (2020 21); Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto (2020); and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2019). Her performance EVERYWHERE BEEN THERE created in collaboration with choreographer Temitope Ajose- Cutting and musician Paolo Thorsen-Nagel, premiered at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf in 2019. James Ensor (1860 1949) was a Belgian painter known for his provocative and innovative works, often featuring masks and grotesque figures. Through mediums like etching and lithography, Ensor delved into themes of existential exploration and the macabre. His graphic oeuvre showcases his mastery of line and form, inviting us into a realm where masks, skeletons, and surreal landscapes converge to challenge conventions and provoke thought. But how did Ensor make prints? What techniques did he use? Which old masters inspired him and in what way did he experiment with this medium? James Ensor and the Graphic Experiment gathers the most remarkable results of Ensor s graphic experiments: preparatory drawings, copper plates and various states of prints.

The new monograph of the great English urban artist D*Face, bringing together the best of the past four years: murals (on five continents), paintings, lithographs, objects, motorcycles, etc.
In France, his two large murals (created in 2018 and 2023) can be seen in Paris along the elevated metro line 6 in the 13th arrondissement
A book for urban art enthusiasts, beautifully presented with visible stitching
Includes unpublished photographs and stories of an icon of street art
D*Face, born Dean Stockton, is a British artist known for his distinctive blend of pop art and punk culture in street art. Drawing inspiration from American comics, he creates street art and exhibits globally, contributing to the rise of contemporary street art alongside artists like OBEY and BANKSY.
The purpose of this book is to give a wider insight into the practice of working within the streets and the public domain. What people most often see of street art is actually the middle point of an artwork s lifespan, the clean image of a recently finished mural or a freshly peeled sticker but that s not the whole picture. Not only is there a whole process leading up to the creation of a mural but there also exists a journey of change after work has been left to the streets. Paint fades, tags appear, stickers peel and crack all these are part and parcel of what it means to work within the street. This book aims to tell that story.
D*Face, whose real name is Dean Stockton, prominent British street artist known for his unique approach to urban art, is the author of the book. Born in 1978 in London, he has become one of the most prolific contemporary urban artists of his generation. His work is heavily influenced by pop art, drawing inspiration from artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. D*Face's art features dysfunctional characters that satirize various aspects of society, particularly our obsessions with fame, over-consumption, and materialism. His murals and artworks often serve as thought-provoking social commentaries, adding depth and critical perspective to the urban art scene. Over the years, D*Face has made significant contributions to the street art movement. He established StolenSpace, a gallery in Shoreditch, and held his first major London solo exhibition, Death & Glory, in October 2006. His artistic journey spans 17 years, reflecting his evolution as an artist and his ongoing influence on the world of urban and contemporary art.

For the first time in book form, experience all Scream works together with numerous versions of the motif, from merchandise, memes, pastiches from film and TV, emojis in addition to three essays
Richly illustrated
Includes the stories behind the scream motif
Ever since Munch first came up with the Scream motif at the end of the 19th century, countless artists, including Andy Warhol and Marina Abramovi , have modified it within their own work. In addition, the open-mouthed figure has cropped up in popular cultural productions such as Wes Craven sScream film franchise, the poster for the kids movie Home Alone, and in scores of satirical cartoons on everything from Brexit to Donald Trump s presidency and tax rises as well as on innumerable political banners and placards, most recently in protests about the climate emergency. In recent years, the Scream image has also taken a prominent place on digital screens in the form of its own emoji and as the basis of countless memes. At the same time, the quantity of souvenirs and other objects decorated with or shaped like Munch s figure of desperation has increased immeasurably. In short: these daysThe Scream haunts pretty much every layer of culture. It is without doubt one of the most frequently reproduced images in the history of art, equalled only perhaps by Leonardo da Vinci sMona Lisa, and is the originator of a constantly expanding network of analogue and digital mutations. Via these three texts, and a rich selection of illustrations including all knownScream images ever made by the artist himself, a selection of hisScream texts and countless so-called Scream mutations this book embraces Munch s best-known image as a cultural phenomenon.

Amigos Forever
£29.95
An unusual biography of Picasso through his dogs, richly illustrated with reproductions of his works and archive photographs The first volume in a new series, Amigos Forever, about artists and their dogs
In 1933, Virginia Woolf wrote a biography of the poet Elisabeth Barret Browning, told in the first person by her cocker spaniel, Flush. In 1936, to write her memoirs, All the dogs of my life, Elisabeth von Arnim chose to tell the story of the 14 dogs that had accompanied her throughout her life. In 1957, the dachshund Lump arrived at the home of Pablo Picasso, whose life he shared until 1973. This book charts Picasso s intimate family life, with Jacqueline, Claude and Paloma, and with the animals that populate the villa La Californie, as well as his artistic life. Inspired by these references, this collection (whose title is a nod to Picasso and Lump) takes a look at the lives and works of the great artists and art lovers of the 20th and 21st centuries from the perspective of their relationship with the dogs of their lives . These lighthearted, erudite books offer a unique approach to the life and work of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Peggy Guggenheim and Yves Saint Laurent
Jean-Louis Andral, a leading expert on the painter, has been director of the musée Picasso in Antibes since 2008.Martin Bethenod has led numerous positions in the field of culture and contemporary art. He has been president of the Crédac-Centre d'art contemporain in Ivry since 2013 and president of the Archives de la Critique d'Art.

W Magazine This illustrated catalogue is published to accompany the retrospective exhibition devoted to American artist Mark Rothko, curated by Suzanne Pagé and the artist s son, Christopher Rothko. The show will feature over one hundred works. Born Markus Rothkowitz in Latvia in the early 20th century, the man who would soon become known as Mark Rothko began painting in the 1930s. While his early works were influenced by mythology and Surrealism, his first abstract paintings emerged in the 1940s with theMultiform series, followed by his Classic Years and the Black and Gray paintings. A key figure on the New York art scene, Rothko was an uncategorisable artist who deployed an extensive palette of colour and light with a talent that consistently triggers emotion. His great sensitivity shaped a poetic, enigmatic universe that leaves no one untouched.

Published to accompany the Opulence Distilled exhibition at Snijders-Rockoxhuis, Antwerp running until October 2024
Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684) was one of the best still-life painters of the 17th century. His work, which is enchanting to the eye, has always enjoyed international fame. Throughout his painting career of nearly 60 years, de Heem continued to search for new and better ways to depict his subjects. He trained several pupils and had countless followers and imitators, in the Netherlands as well as abroad, and throughout the centuries. The fact that he was active in both the Northern and Southern Netherlands enhanced his success and fame. He worked successively in Leiden, (presumably) in Amsterdam, in Antwerp, in Utrecht and again in Antwerp. De Heem is perhaps best known for his exuberant floral still lifes, which, however, were mainly created after 1660. By then, already for decades, he had painted still lifes of many themes and motifs, and in a variety of sizes, modest as well as luxurious. In Antwerp he had developed the large, rich still lifes which earned him part of his renown.
This comprehensive monograph written by Fred G. Meijer, contains the complete catalogue of de Heem s oeuvre. Volume 1 includes an introduction, a biography and description of the development of his work. Volume 2 contains the catalogue raisonné of all paintings now known by de Heem, as well as several appendices.
Fred G. Meijer (1955) graduated from the Reinwardt Academie in 1980 and shortly after started at the RKD, Netherlands Institute for Art History, in The Hague, where he worked until mid-2017, lastly as Senior Curator in the department of Old Netherlandish Painting. Subsequently, he founded Fred G. Meijer Art History (www.fredgmeijer.com), providing art-historical advice and texts. His main field of interest is still-life painting from the 17th and 18th centuries, but his specialist knowledge concerns many areas of painting and drawing from c.1600-1850, and related subjects. He published numerous articles, (contributions to) catalogues of exhibitions and collections, and wrote the catalogues of still-life collections in Rotterdam (1989) and Oxford (2003) and publishedA Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Still-life Painters [ ] with A. van der Willigen (2003). In 2016 he was awarded the degree of doctor for his research concerning Jan Davidsz. de Heem on which this book is based.

This book maps out a topography of Impressionism, illustrated with paintings by its artists and a rich selection of historical photographs, going back to the places and atmospheres of an extraordinary artistic movement
Plenty of visual and textual content at an affordable price
150th anniversary of the first Impressionists' exhibition at Nadar's studio
Comparisons between the paintings and historical photographs of the same places
The author is a journalist, specialised in reviews of exhibits and art books
Includes maps of Paris and its surroundings with address details for city entries
With many literary quotes from 19th-century novels and periodicals, cartoons
It brings back to life the gaudy, brilliant Paris of the Impressionists
More than other painters, the Impressionists wanted to shake off the dust of the studio, and swarmed the noisy streets of Paris, filling the cafés and living in garrets and humble little dwellings on the hill of Montmartre, which still seemed like the countryside at the time, its slopes covered with vineyards and vegetable gardens. Nor did they limit themselves to the city, planting their easels in the clearings of the forest of Fontainebleau, on the coast of Normandy, in the rustic villages in the Oise Valley and in Bougival and Argenteuil on the banks of the Seine. Like their Naturalist friends Zola and Maupassant, they liked to mix with the locals so they could experience the places directly, painting everywhere, even on a boat, like the one where Monet had his floating studio.

Roelant Savery (1578-1639) was among the large group of Flemish artists who arrived in the Northern Netherlands around 1600, during the Eighty Years' War
Roelant Savery (1578-1639) was among the large group of Flemish artists who arrived in the Northern Netherlands around 1600, during the Eighty Years War. There, they were at the cradle of the great flowering of art in the 17th century. Savery was a highly versatile draughtsman and painter, specialising in landscapes, animal scenes and flower still lifes. With encyclopaedic precision, he depicted countless different species: animals, flowers but also people from various regions, from Bohemian peasants to Jewish believers in the synagogue. Savery became the painter of the extinct dodo from Mauritius. For more than a decade, Savery worked in the service of the Habsburg emperor Rudolf II in Prague, who sent him out to capture the landscapes and people of his empire. Coming from the Low Countries, the waterfalls in the Alps must have made a deep impression on the artist. After returning to the Netherlands, Roelant Savery settled in Utrecht, where he created a garden with precious flowers and plants behind his house. This way, he did not have to leave home to find inspiration for his flower still lifes.

Beautiful catalogue for the Holburne s retrospective of Henry Moore s small-scale sculptures in stone, wood, terracotta, plaster, lead, plasticine and bronze, including works previously unpublished and unexhibited Accompanies a show at The Holburne Museum, from 3 May - 8 September, 2024
This is a beautifully produced catalogue accompanying the Holburne Museum s groundbreaking retrospective of Henry Moore s sculptures that could fit in the hand. At the heart of Moore s practice was the directness of working on a small scale, whether carving small stones or pieces of wood, casting lead, modelling in clay or, in later years, modelling in plasticine around a found stone or bone to be cast in bronze.
The exhibition will include sculptures in stone, wood, terracotta, plaster, lead, plasticine and bronze, and span themes recurrent in his work: the reclining female figure, the mother and child, the human head, and the fallen warrior. It will includemaquettes for some of his best-known, public sculptures alongside lesser-known works, including the display for the very first time in a museum exhibition of a recently discovered early lead cast of Mother & Child
The catalogue presents 85 illustrations with an introduction by Chris Stephens.
