The finest single-volume edition of Audubon's Birds of America — with a luxurious 381 x 304mm trim size — is back in stock This printing features a new natural-textured paper stock, a strikingly redesigned cover and slipcase, and improved typography throughout Edited by legendary ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson and his wife and collaborator Virginia Maria Peterson Presents all 435 of Audubon's plates in modern taxonomic order, with the Peterson's commentaries on each bird An abundantly illustrated introduction surveys Audubon's life and career and the history of American bird art before and after him Abbeville’s classic edition of The Birds of America is back in stock — in a striking new package. The Baby Elephant Folio presents all 435 of John James Audubon’s brilliant hand-coloured engravings in exquisite reproductions derived from the original plates of the rare Double Elephant Folio. Although many attempts have been made to re-create the splendid illustrations in Audubon’s masterpiece, nothing has ever equalled the level of fidelity achieved in this luxurious edition. Organised and annotated by Roger Tory Peterson and Virginia Marie Peterson, this volume is as informative as it is beautiful. Its fascinating introduction places Audubon in the context of the history of American ornithological art and also reproduces a wide sampling of the work of his notable predecessors and disciples, including Roger Tory Peterson’s own rightfully famous paintings. A new systematic arrangement of the prints, following the modern classification of species, and descriptive captions about each bird allow us to appreciate Audubon’s achievement in the light of modern ornithology. Virginia Marie Peterson was a scientist and an expert on the environmental effects of oil spills. Roger Tory Peterson established himself as America’s leading ornithologist with his best-selling Field Guide to the Birds. Like Audubon, Peterson received many honorary degrees and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Honor.

The ultimate gift for gardeners, foragers, and nature lovers A spectacular poster-sized book that illustrates the family connections between the plants around us, deepening our appreciation of nature. Much like our own family, plant families share characteristics, often in the arrangement of their flowers, leaves, and stems. In this oversized book, acclaimed botanical artist Wendy Hollender depicts 24 plant families most commonly encountered in the garden and in the wild. Her superb full-page illustrations, featuring subjects rendered from life in colour pencil and watercolour, help us visualise the sometimes surprising connections between different plants—for example, between the zinnia, the dandelion, and romaine lettuce, all members of the sunflower family, Asteraceae. For each family, Hollender’s lively writings aided by additional illustrations highlight the similarities between family members, and describe her adventures in collecting the subjects (from her backyard garden to the Hawaiian wilderness). Guest essays from a variety of distinguished contributors—including Marta McDowell, the best-selling garden writer; Susan Pell, executive director of the US Botanic Garden; and Dina Falconi, the well-known clinical herbalist—lend fascinating perspectives on the featured plant families. The Album of Plant Families will be the ultimate gift for all gardeners, foragers, and nature lovers. Wendy Hollender is a botanical artist whose work has been exhibited at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, and the Smithsonian National Museum for Natural History, and published in the New York Times, O, the Oprah Magazine, and numerous other outlets. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Hollender is the author of the bestselling books The Joy of Botanical Drawing and Botanical Drawing in Color, and teaches botanical drawing at the New York Botanical Garden.

Two hundred lithographs that comprised a famous late nineteenth-century drawing course Introduces the work of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue Of interest to artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of art The Bargue-Gérôme Drawing Course is a complete reprint of a famous, late nineteenth-century drawing course. It contains a set of almost two hundred masterful lithographs of subjects for copying by drawing students before they attempt drawing from life or nature. Consequently it is a book that will interest artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of drawings. It also introduces us to the work and life of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue. The Drawing Course consists of three sections. The first comprises of plates drawn after casts, usually of antique examples. Different parts of the body are studied in order of difficulty, until full figures are presented. The second section pays homage to the western school of painting, with lithographs after exemplary drawings by Renaissance and modern masters. The third part contains almost 60 académies, or drawings after nude male models, all original inventions by Bargue, the lithographer. With great care, the student is introduced to continually more difficult problems in the close observing and recording of nature. Charles Bargue started his career as a lithographer of drawings by hack artists for a popular market in comic, sentimental and soft-porn subjects. By working with Gérôme, and in preparing the plates for the course, Bargue was transformed into a spectacular painter of single figures and intimate scenes; a master of precious details that always remain observation and never became self-conscious virtuosity, and colour schemes that unified his composition in exquisite tonal harmonies. The last part of the book is a biography of Bargue, along with a preliminary catalogue of his paintings, accompanied by reproductions of all that have been found and of many of those lost. A renowned specialist in nineteenth-century academic art, Gerald Ackerman (1928-2016) was the author of several books including The Life and Work of Jean-Léon Gérôme, The Orientalists of the British Schoo l and The Orientalists of the American School. Graydon Parrish is a renowned figurative painter, famous in the United States for his allegory Remorse, Despondence, and Acceptance of An Early Death , at the Mead Art Museum, Amherst College, Massachusetts.

The official catalogue of the Centre Pompidou’s Surrealism Exhibition which begins in Paris, 4 September 2024 to 13 January 2025, and moves on to Spain, Germany and the USA Featuring pages from André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto Illustrated with 250 Surrealist masterpieces, including works by some of the world’s most famous artists Reversible layout “Organisers say it is an unprecedented way to organise an exhibition: while some works and themes remain constant in each city, others change and each museum tells its own story. Perfect, then, for a movement that always aimed to subvert traditional artistic norms.” — The Guardian “… This blend of scholarly insight and artistic exploration makes the catalogue not only visually stunning but intellectually enriching.” — Artlyst The defining book for the centenary of Surrealism. From September 2024 to January 2025, the Centre Pompidou will celebrate the 100th anniversary of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto. For the next two years, their unprecedented Surrealist exhibition will tour the art galleries of the world, accompanied by this special catalogue. Perhaps more than any other artistic movement, Surrealism had a cataclysmic effect on the modern mind, changing forever the way we think about experiencing the world. By rejecting the gross linearity that typified several centuries of preceding artworks, the legendary Surrealists – Magritte, Ernst, Carrington, Dalí, Tanning and so many others – reached beyond the façade of that which is patently visible and found something more. Like the great works that fill its pages, Surrealism offers a departure from singletrack thinking, with a multi-directional layout and an uninhibited design. Featuring original essays from leading academics and excerpts from the Surrealist Manifesto itself, this stands among the most essential Surrealist catalogues ever published.

A comprehensive and accessible historical and artistic survey of botanical illustration Perhaps the most important book on botanical painting ever published With a new introduction by Martyn Rix, editor of Curtis's Botanical Magazine at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew This major work, first published in 1950, is still considered the classic book on the subject. It provides a comprehensive, critical and well-illustrated survey of the portrayal of plants across over three thousand years, at a more compact size. Of the first edition, the poet and gardening writer, Vita Sackville-West said: “Let no one think this is a book only for the specialist. It is essential for the specialist, certainly, but it is also for all the flower-lovers and all those who enjoy the by-ways of biography and the added attraction of good writing”. This edition contains 123 colour plates (more than twice as many as the first edition), alongside 148 black-and-white illustrations. It invites the reader to appreciate the works of the greatest botanical illustrators both past and present. Wilfrid Blunt (1901-87) was an art master at Haileybury College and at Eton College, Windsor. On his retirement in 1959 he became Curator of the Watts Gallery, near Guildford, Surrey. Here Blunt devoted most of his time to writing and travel and published some 25 books. An artist himself, Blunt brought to Botanical Illustration a craftsman's appreciation, as well as knowledge gained from experience, his extensive reading and visits to many galleries on the Continent. William Stearn (1911-2001) had a lifelong interest in botanical illustration. His numerous publications included Botanical Latin, Australian Flower Paintings of Ferdinand Bauer, Merian in Surinam, Plant Portraits from the Flora Danica, Flower Artists of Kew and The Orchid Paintings of Franz Bauer. He provided assistance on botanical, biographical and bibliographical matters in Botanical Illustration, and contributed part of the text.

Showcases the work of a realist artist whose work is enjoying a revival Explores Bouguereau's work in new depth, with expert insight into his most important paintings William Bouguereau, the most popular artist in nineteenth-century France, is rapidly becoming one of the most popular realist artists of all time. This book is an exploration of the four main types of paintings that were most prevalent throughout Bouguereau’s body of work. This includes his mythological works, religious works, peasants, and portraits. This final section on portraits focuses on paintings of heads and hands, which gave the artist the opportunity to concentrate on the subtleties of capturing human emotion, something at which the artist was a consummate master, and is a primary factor in what makes his works, in general, so compelling. Although each section of the book discusses the importance of the individual genera within Bouguereau’s oeuvre, and includes painting analyses to highlight his most important works, this book is a true showcase of the master’s lifetime achievement through beautifully illustrated fullpage plates of over 120 of his greatest masterpieces. Frederick C. Ross, Chairman of the ARC, has a Masters in art education from Columbia University and is the leading authority on William Bouguereau, co-author of the catalogue raisonné, William Bouguereau: His Life and Works. His essays and speeches have become required reading in countless classrooms. Kara Lysandra Ross, Co-Chair and Chief Operating Officer of the ARC, is an art historian and writer. She co-founded The Da Vinci Initiative, dedicated to introducing skill-based art education in public and private schools K-12, and serves as its Chief Executive Officer. She is the world leading authority on Edmund Blair Leighton, and is currently researching and writing the catalogue raisonné.

Complete survey of the collaboration between Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke for the band, Radiohead Many previously unpublished works and notebooks included Exclusive interview with Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood Includes essay by the novelist Ben Myers A major retrospective is held at the Ashmolean Museum from August 2025 to January 2026 This major retrospective catalogue accompanies the first institutional exhibition focusing on the visual works of art by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke. The majority of the paintings, drawings and digital works were specifically made for Yorke’s internationally celebrated band Radiohead, formed in Oxford in 1985. The book is beautifully designed in the same size as a record cover and features iconic artworks from the 1980s until today, relating to Radiohead albums, their covers and promotional band images, as well as sketchbooks and rare materials from their archives that have never before been published. It offers fresh views on the art of album covers, exploring the complex relationship between visual art and music. Radiohead was formed in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in 1985. The collaboration with the artist Stanley Donwood began in 1994 when the band was developing their second album, The Bends, which was released on 13th March, 1995. 2025 is therefore the 40-year anniversary of the band and the 30-year anniversary of the release of The Bends. The catalogue’s focus is upon the art produced by both Stanley Donwood and the band’s lead vocalist, Thom Yorke presented chronologically. Radiohead’s popularity has never waned and they have a strong core following and new fans (many of who are the children of ‘original’ fans). The high-quality reproductions are complemented by exclusive interviews with the artists, and essays by Alex Farquharson, Nico Kos Earle, Benjamin Myers, James Putnam and Jennifer Ramkalawon. A major retrospective is held at the Ashmolean Museum from August 2025 to January 2026. Lena Fritsch is the Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art at the Ashmolean, responsible for exhibitions, displays and acquisitions of international art. She teaches at the University of Oxford, V&A and SOAS. Previously, she was a curator at Tate Modern, London and Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. She holds a PhD from Bonn University and also studied at Keio University, Tokyo. Benjamin Myers is an awardwinning author and journalist, whose work includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and journalism. His novels have been translated into13 languages. He is the author of Rare Singles, Cuddy, The Gallows Pole, The Offing and many more.

From 1984 to 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) and Andy Warhol (1928–1987) jointly produced about 160 paintings, some of the largest in their respective careers. For the first time in book form, experience all Scream works together with numerous versions of the motif, from merchandise, memes, pastiches from film and TV, emojis in addition to three essays Richly illustrated Includes the stories behind the scream motif Ever since Munch first came up with the Scream motif at the end of the 19th century, countless artists, including Andy Warhol and Marina Abramović, have modified it within their own work. In addition, the open-mouthed figure has cropped up in popular cultural productions such as Wes Craven’sScream film franchise, the poster for the kids’ movie Home Alone, and in scores of satirical cartoons – on everything from Brexit to Donald Trump’s presidency and tax rises – as well as on innumerable political banners and placards, most recently in protests about the climate emergency. In recent years, the Scream image has also taken a prominent place on digital screens in the form of its own emoji and as the basis of countless memes. At the same time, the quantity of souvenirs and other objects decorated with or shaped like Munch’s figure of desperation has increased immeasurably. In short: these daysThe Scream haunts pretty much every layer of culture. It is without doubt one of the most frequently reproduced images in the history of art, equalled only perhaps by Leonardo da Vinci’sMona Lisa, and is the originator of a constantly expanding network of analogue and digital mutations. Via these three texts, and a rich selection of illustrations – including all knownScream images ever made by the artist himself, a selection of his Scream texts and countless so-called Scream mutations – this book embraces Munch’s best-known image as a cultural phenomenon. Patricia G. Berman holds the Feldberg Chair of Art at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, specialising in modern and contemporary art, photography and propaganda. She has also taught at the University of Oslo where she facilitated the research network ‘Munch, Modernism and Modernity’. Berman’s books and catalogues include studies of Edvard Munch, James Ensor, 19th-century Danish painting, gestural drawing and contemporary art. She has also curated numerous exhibitions, most recentlyThe Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography (Scandinavia House, New York, 2017 and 2021 and Munchmuseet 2020). Berman is currently co-curating an exhibition of Nordic art and design for the Frick Museum, Pittsburgh, PA.Joanna Iranowska is a museologist with digital collections and material culture as her main fields of expertise. She holds a PhD from the University of Oslo about art museums as cultures of copies. In her thesis she focused on Munchmuseet and digital reproduction. She is also interested in actor-network theory and museum shops as arenas for reproduction. Iranowska now works as senior curator of photography at the MiA Museums in Greater Oslo, with virtual, interactive exhibitions, and is particularly interested in collections of pictures by female photographers.Øyvind Vågnes is an author and professor of media studies at the University of Bergen. Showcases Paula Rego’s fiercely political, fantastical depictions of gender, the body and power across her long career Situates Rego’s work against Portuguese dictatorship and contemporary global threats to women’s bodily autonomy Offers the most comprehensive presentation of the exhibition at the MUNCH Museum, Oslo.Paula Rego – Dance Among Thorns, with all works reproduced. The exhibition runs from 24th April to 2nd August, 2026 Highlights Paula Rego’s inspiration from Edvard Munch’s art for the first time, revealing visual and thematic affinities between their works Paints an intense, nuanced portrait of an artist who never stopped challenging aesthetic norms and political oppression British Portuguese Paula Rego (1935–2022) carved out her place in international art history with a self-possessed, uncompromising expression and a burning commitment to fighting oppression and lack of freedom. She grew up in Portugal under António de Oliveira Salazar’s dictatorship, which imposed strong constraints, especially on women’s freedom, and throughout her long career Rego dissected the relationship between gender, the body and power in a dark, fantastical visual language. At a time when authoritarian forces are on the rise across the world and women’s right to control their own bodies is under pressure, her images feel more relevant than ever. The exhibitionPaula Rego – Dance Among Thorns presents Rego’s powerful and unsettling body of work in its full breadth. The catalogue includes all works on display and a collection of new texts by the exhibition’s curator Kari J. Brandtzæg as well as by Catarina Alfaro, Isabel Freire and Jennifer Higgie. Together, they sketch an intense and nuanced portrait of an artist who never ceased to challenge – whether aesthetically or politically. Catarina Alfaro is a researcher and curator with a master’s degree in museology and cultural heritage from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2009). Between 2001 and 2010 she collaborated with the Modern Art Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon on a catalogue raisonné of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso’s oeuvre, and several exhibitions. From 2011 to 2014 Alfaro was chief curator at Casa das Histórias Paula Rego in Cascais before taking up her current position as coordinator for programming and conservation. Kari J. Brandtzæg is a senior curator at the Munch Museum, and holds a master’s degree on Russian art at the turn of the last century and a PhD on Henrik Sørensen and interwar tendency art (University of Oslo, 2024). Since joining the Munch Museum in 2015, Brandtzæg has curated several significant exhibitions, includingTracey Emin / Edvard Munch: The Loneliness of the Soul (2021), and Vanessa Baird: Go Down with Me (2024). Isabel Freire is a researcher, journalist and secondary school teacher with a philosophy degree from NOVA FCSH and a PhD in sociology from ICS-ULisboa. Her work focuses on the history of sexuality, women’s history, women’s associations and feminisms in twentieth-century Portugal. Her latest bookCompassos Feministas: Associações Federadas no Conselho das Mulheres Portuguesas (1914–1947) (2023), won the Maria Lamas Prize for Studies on Women, Gender and Equality in 2024. Jennifer Higgie is an Australian writer who lives in London, and previously the editor of frieze magazine. Her novel Bedlam (Bloomsbury) will be released in the UK and US in July 2026. Focuses on a much-loved artist The first book to focus specifically on Eardley’s time in Catterline Brings to light significant new research From the same author as the highly successful Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place, ISBN 9781911054023 Originally published in 2021 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Joan Eardley’s birth A vivid portrait of much-loved artist, Joan Eardley, and her relationship with the Scottish coastal fishing village, Catterline. Joan Eardley, one of Scotland’s most loved artists, first visited the coastal fishing village of Catterline in north-east Scotland in 1951. It sparked a fascination that would last the rest of her life. She made the village her home and found inspiration in the dramatic light and rapidly changing weather. The gentle landscapes and wild rolling seascapes she painted there in wind, snow, rain and sunshine are among her best-loved works. Focussing on Eardley’s relationship with Catterline, this book includes previously unpublished archival material as well as specially conducted interviews with many of those in the village who knew her, shedding new light on Eardley’s life and artistic practice. A vivid portrait is painted both of Eardley and of the village, showing the vital part Catterline played in her development as an artist. Patrick Elliott is Chief Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Galleries of Scotland and author of the highly successful True to Life: British Realist Painting in the 1920s & 1930s and Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place.

This shimmering novel is an extraordinary portrait of a day in the life of an artist at work and at home “I have never read a text which goes even half as far as this one in expressing the particular poignancy which lay at the heart of the impressionist movement. I say this as an art critic. As a novelist I would simply like to pay my tribute to the mastery of language, portraiture and storytelling which Figes has now at her command.” – John Berger “A small masterpiece” – Susan Hill “A luminous prose poem” – Joyce Carol Oates This shimmering novel is an extraordinary portrait of a day in the life of an artist at work and at home. In prose as luminous as the colours Monet is using to portray his garden, Eva Figes guides us from dawn (‘midnight blueblack growing grey and misty’) through midday (‘the sun was high now… shrinking what little shadow remained, fading colours, the pink rambler roses on the fence by the railway track looked almost white’) to evening (‘the tide of shadows rising as the sunset glow faded outside.’) Monet’s wife, grieving for a lost daughter; a living daughter, fretting that she will not be able to marry the man she loves; their friend the abbé, eating and drinking with them; two children playing, closest to Monet in the freshness and certainty of their vision; all experiencing in different ways the richness of the light that Monet works unceasingly to pin down in his last, great paintings. Eva Figes (1932-2012), born in Berlin, moved to England with her family in 1939. She published novels and social theory, including the feminist classic Patriarchal Attitudes. Her two children are the author Kate Figes and the historian Orlando Figes.

Contains 39 beautiful watercolours of Shetland Norman Ackroyd is hugely popular for his atmospheric images of the British Isles Includes a gazetteer identifying the locations of all the paintings Norman Ackroyd CBE RA has spent over four decades recording the coastal landscapes of the British archipelago. All his watercolours and many of his etchings are executed en plein air, mainly from chartered boats chosen for their skippers’ local knowledge and expertise in landing on the more remote rocks and islands. These journeys, which can last up to fourteen hours, are the result of extensive reading and research. A Shetland Notebook contains 39 watercolours selected from several journeys to the edges of Shetland in the spring and summer of 2012. From the verdant flora of the southern isles to the rugged northern cliffs of Unst and Esha Ness, the book paints a vivid portrait of one of the most intriguing yet inhospitable corners of the British Isles. Each sketch is accompanied by a brief but engaging commentary by the artist. Norman Ackroyd (b. 1938) studied at the Royal College of Art, London. He turned to landscape painting in the 1980s, and since then his prints of the ruggedly beautiful British coastline have been widely admired around the world.

An exploration of the vivid watercolour and ink sketches that Hockney made in his home county, Yorkshire Features a range of stunning images, some with vast, panoramic spans and others depicting rooted, familiar locations A short but enlightening insight into Hockney's creative process In recent years David Hockney has returned to England to paint the landscape of his childhood. East Yorkshire’s stern hillscapes, craggy drystone walls and endless windswept moors make for a stimulating muse, and Hockney’s work captures the character of this scenery with expert precision. Although his passionate interest in new technologies has led Hockney to develop a virtuoso drawing technique on an iPad, he is still regularly accompanied by a trusty sketchbook. This invaluable tool allows him to work quickly, capturing the changing light and the fleeting effects of the weather. Executed in watercolour and ink, these panoramic scenes have the spatial complexity of finished paintings: the broad sweep of sky or road, the patchwork tapestry of land. Yet unlike a painting completed in the studio, far-removed from the landscape that inspired it, these sketches convey the immediacy of Hockney’s impressions. And as indicated by views down village streets and across kitchen tables, his rooted local knowledge and fondness for the area around the East Yorkshire Wolds always shines through. If you know the region, the location of these sketches is unmistakable. If you don’t, its features will come to life in these pages, animated by Hockney’s incomparable skill. David Hockney CH RA is an internationally acclaimed artist. He studied at Bradford School of Art from 1953 to 1957 and at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1959 to 1962. He has lived in Los Angeles since 1963, and now splits his time between America and East Yorkshire, where he grew up.

During the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, David Hockney was in Normandy, and recorded the arrival of spring in exuberant iPad paintings Over a hundred new iPad paintings on display at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2021 Published to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, 23 May – 26 August 2021 At the beginning of 2020, just as global Covid-19 restrictions were coming into force, the artist David Hockney was at his house, studio and garden in Normandy. From there, he witnessed the arrival of spring, and recorded the blossoming of the surrounding landscape on his iPad, a medium he has been using for over a decade. Working outdoors was an antidote to the anxiety of the moment for Hockney – ‘We need art, and I do think it can relieve stress,’ he says. This uplifting publication – produced to accompany a major exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts – includes 116 of his new iPad paintings and shows to full effect Hockney’s singular skill in capturing the exuberance of nature. William Boyd is the author of sixteen novels, among them A Good Man in Africa (1981), An Ice Cream War (1982), Any Human Heart (2002), Restless (2006) and Trio (2020). Richard Dadd: genius and tragedy – the Victorian artist who created extraordinary fairy paintings while confined for forty years in institutions Includes his masterpiece The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke and other intricate works New definitive account by the leading authority, exploring Dadd’s life, art and enduring legacy Published to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, from July 25th to October 25th, 2026, bringing together more than 60 works that track Dadd’s life and career – art that was as radical and imaginative in his time as it is today Richard Dadd (1817–1886) constructed fairytale worlds and other highly original works of art. After making his name as an exceptional student at the Royal Academy in the late 1830s, he travelled to the Eastern Mediterranean, where he developed a psychotic illness that led to the killing of his father. Dadd spent the rest of his life in London’s Bethlem Royal Hospital and then Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire, in both of which he was encouraged to paint. Dadd’s output encompasses much more than the fairy paintings for which he is renowned. There are also highly detailed sketches evocative of his Eastern Mediterranean travels, remarkable characterisations of the human passions, and perceptive portraits of his doctors. Profusely illustrated throughout, this new account of his life and art by Nicholas Tromans and other leading scholars re-examines the legacy of one of the most fascinating figures in the visual arts of the Victorian era. Nicholas Tromans, curator of this exhibition, has written widely on 19th-century British art. Sarah Thomas is Senior Lecturer at the School of Historical Studies, Birkbeck, University of London. Cora Gilroy-Ware is Associate Professor in the History of Art at St Peter’s College, Oxford. Robert Howard is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry in the UCL Division of Psychiatry, London. New edition of the only book to date to comprehensively document the early work of celebrated Swiss artist HR Giger Features paintings and drawings by HR Giger that are rarely published or shown in public displays Academy Award-winner HR Giger is the creator of the legendary movie monster Alien and arguably the most distinguished representative of Fantastic Realism Swiss surrealist artist HR Giger (1940–2014) achieved international fame in 1979 for designing the fantastic creatures and eerie environments that terrified moviegoers in Ridley Scott’s science fiction film Alien. Yet before these iconic creations made him a celebrity and won him an Oscar for visual effects, Giger was already highly regarded in the international art world for his unique freehand painting style and biomechanical dreamscapes. HR Giger: The Oeuvre Before Alien 1961–1976, first published in 2007 and now becoming available again in a new edition, is the only book to date to document the artist’s lesser known, but no less impressive, early work. This lavishly illustrated volume traces Giger’s career from his education as an architect and industrial designer at the Zurich College of Art to the development of his ink drawing and oil painting technique and his eventual breakthrough as one of the foremost artists of the fantastic realism school. Featuring many unpublished or rarely available early paintings and drawings, and accompanied by an essay by noted art historian Beat Stutzer, this volume juxtaposes Giger’s paintings with works by his predecessors, including Ensor, Fuseli, Goya, and Piranesi. HR Giger: The Oeuvre Before Alien illuminates the mind of a visual genius whose first artistic experiments were decades ahead of their time. Beat Stutzer is a Lucerne-based art historian, writer, and curator. He served as director of the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur from 1982–2011 and as curator of the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz from 1998–2016.

Leonardo da Vinci's Anatomical Atlas brings together the complete corpus of the artist's anatomical drawings held at the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, the world's richest collection of the great artist's work on paper Enriched by Mario Rende’s considerations and Giampaolo Guida’s introductory note, Martin Kemp’s work surprises and redefines our way of looking at and “feeling” Leonardo’s work Gold foil lamination included on plate and spine According to Count Galeazzo Arconati, who gave other Leonardo manuscripts to the Ambrosiana Library in Milan, the drawings concerning nature, anatomy, and colour, have been “in the hands of the King of England before 1640.” The collection has been recorded as being in the possession of Queen Mary II, in 1690, a year after she and her husband, William III, ascended the throne as joint monarchs. The collection comprises all the known anatomical drawings by Leonardo. Three hundred images of the human body by the great artist, made between about 1485 and 1510–15, are showcased in this magnificent volume. Based on the artist’s own anatomical dissections, they show his evolving understanding of physiology. The drawings demonstrate, as well, Leonardo’s progress from technical mastery of his subject to consummate draftsmanship. The commentary on this astonishing body of work is by Professor Martin Kemp of Oxford University, a leading international authority of Leonardo da Vinci, who explains the uniqueness of the painter’s stroke and the refined figurative transposition. One of the most renowned Italian Anatomists, Professor Mario Rende of the University of Perugia, analyses the significance of these works from a medical-scientific angle, revealing the insights, the research methodology, and the experimental and analytical approach of the Genius of da Vinci. Moving between art and anatomy, between unsurpassed illustrative display and avant-garde Renaissance scientific research, the work thus provides an indepth and comprehensive look at an indispensable aspect of the Great Master’s story. Text in English and Italian. Martin Kemp is Emeritus Research Professor in the History of Art at Oxford University and a Fellow of the British Academy. He has written and broadcast extensively on imagery in art and science spanning the Renaissance to the present day. He speaks on issues of visualisation and lateral thinking to a wide range of audiences and is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on Leonardo da Vinci, who has been the subject of many of his articles, essays, and books, including Leonardo (Oxford University Press, 2004). Kemp has also published on imagery in the sciences of anatomy, natural history, and optics, as in The Science of Art: Optical Themes in Western Art from Brunelleschi to Seurat (Yale University Press, 1990). He was trained in Natural Sciences and Art History at Cambridge University and the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London. From 1993 to 1998 he was Wolfson Research Professor at the British Academy. For more than 25 years he was based in Scotland, at the University of Glasgow and at the University of St. Andrews. Kemp has curated a series of exhibitions on Leonardo as well as on other themes, including Spectacular Bodies at the Hayward Gallery in 2000, Leonardo da Vinci: Experience, Experiment, Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2006, and Seduced: Art and Sex from Antiquity to Now at the Barbican Art Gallery in 2007.

Major international collaboration between Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Tate, uniting two leading art institutions Features over seventy masterpieces by renowned artists including Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, and Paula Rego Explores the evolution of figurative painting in postwar Britain, highlighting its emotional and psychological depth Broadens the narrative of modern British art by including lesser-known artists and parallel movements Richly illustrated catalogue with insightful essays by leading scholars and curators Timely reassessment of London’s role as a hub of creative innovation in the 20th century Essential reading for enthusiasts of modern art, figurative painting, and postwar cultural history This richly illustrated publication accompanies a major exhibition organised by Kunstmuseum Den Haag in collaboration with Tate, exploring the School of London — a group of postwar artists who redefined figurative painting in Britain. Featuring more than 70 works by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Paula Rego, Frank Auerbach, and their contemporaries, the book traces how these painters captured the human condition in an era of social and cultural upheaval. While Paris and New York led the charge in abstraction, London fostered a quieter yet profound revolution centered on the human body and psyche. Through essays and artworks, the catalogue reveals how these artists grappled with shifting notions of identity, intimacy, and power, offering a compelling perspective on 20th-century art and reaffirming London’s role as a crucible of postwar creativity. Gregory Salter, Assistant Professor at the University of Birmingham, (specialising in postwar British art). Sanjukta Sunderason, assistant professor University of Amsterdam, (specialising in Modernism and activist art). Elena Crippa, former curator Tate and Thijs de Raedt, curator at Kunstmuseum The Hague.
