GET A HOBBY WINE NOT?
By: Mina Kinjo
Are you ready to turn your kitchen into a winery this holiday season? Forget the fancy vineyards; with a little creativity and a dash of patience, you can DIY and ferment your own wine right at home! Whether you're dreaming of a bold red or a crisp white, making your own holiday wine is a fun way to impress friends and family. So, let’s raise our glasses to this grape adventure!
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you start fermenting, you’ll need to gather your supplies. Head to your local homebrew shop or online store and pick up some wine grapes or your favorite fruit, like juicy berries, zesty oranges or even apples. You’ll also need a fermentation vessel, such as a glass carboy, airlock, hydrometer and, of course, wine yeast. If you’re feeling extra festive, grab some spices like cinnamon or cloves to give your wine a holiday twist!
Step 2: Crush and Prep Your Fruit
Once you have your ingredients, it’s time to get crushing! If you’re using grapes, rinse them well and remove any stems. Place the grapes in your fermentation vessel and crush them until you have a lovely mash. If you’re using other fruits, chop them into small pieces to release those delicious juices. The more, the merrier!
Step 3: Add Sugar and Yeast
Now, it’s time to sweeten the deal! Depending on the sweetness of your fruit, you may need to add some sugar. Use your hydrometer to measure the potential alcohol level and adjust the sugar accordingly. Next, sprinkle your wine yeast over the fruit mash and give it a gentle stir. This is where the magic happens—those little yeasties will start fermenting your fruity goodness!
Step 4: Fermentation Fun
Seal your fermentation vessel with the airlock, and let it sit in a dark, cool spot. In about a week, you’ll start to see bubbles—cheers to that! Give your wine a little stir every few days, and keep an eye on the fermentation progress. After two to four weeks, when the bubbling has slowed, it’s time to bottle up your creation!
Cheers to you, the newest winemaking wizard in town! After bottling your holiday masterpiece, try to hold back the urge to sip—though we won’t judge if you sneak a taste or two! When the festivities kick off, gather your friends and family for a joyous toast to your grape escapades. Let the laughter flow as freely as your fabulous DIY wine, and don’t forget to pat yourself on the back for creating something truly special. So raise your glasses high, uncork the merriment and let your holiday spirit sparkle as brightly as your wine!
SPOTLIGHT: A SOUTHEAST ASIAN FOOD TOUR
By: Ashley Topham
Gwinnett is one of the most diverse counties in the Southeast making it a multicultural haven especially when it comes to food. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional pad thai or you’ve always wanted to have Korean BBQ night with your friends, you don’t need to leave Gwinnett County to experience these unique global flavors. We’ve curated a cultural food adventure where you can discover Southeast Asia through five incredible restaurants to make it easier to tackle all of the diverse cuisines around you.
Day 2 - Korea
2850 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd Ste F, Suwanee, GA
30024
CowWow Korean BBQ is the perfect place to go with a group of friends to devour premium cut meats cooked to a smoky perfection and traditional side dishes. There’s a variety of combos you can choose from such as their combo for two people which comes with thinly sliced brisket, boneless short rib, pork neck or belly and marinated short rib. A delicious side dish to try is their spicy tteokbokki which are rice cake sticks served in a thick spicy sauce.
Day 4 - Vietnam
134 E Crogan St, Lawrenceville, GA 30046
Tea Lam’s Corner has the perfect mix of traditional Vietnamese food and delicious milk tea drinks. We recommend their Tom Chien Xu which is tempura shrimp that comes with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce. For an entree, their pho is out of this world and comes with a variety of meat or seafood options and a side of bean sprouts, lime and jalapeno.
Day 1 - Thailand
2180 Pleasant Hill Rd b3, Duluth, GA 30096
Pad Thai specializes in traditional Thai cuisine. We recommend trying the Tom Kha soup as an appetizer which is a coconut milk base soup with mushroom, your choice of meat, scallion and cilantro. As for mains, you can’t go wrong with their massaman curry which is a mild and slightly sweet curry that comes with carrot, onion, sweet potato and peanuts on top. Round out your experience by ordering a Thai tea and mango sticky rice for dessert!
Day 3 - Japan
2131 Pleasant Hill Rd #139, Duluth, GA 30096
Matcha Cafe Maiko serves authentic organic matcha drinks made from Ceremonial grade matcha from Kyoto, Japan as well as soft serve ice cream and other desserts. Their soft serve flavors are seasonal but we love their ube flavor which has sweet vanilla notes. Another popular dessert is their taiyaki which is a traditional street food item of a fish-shaped cake with a red bean filling. Make sure to give their blueberry or strawberry matcha lattes a taste too for a refreshing sip!
Day 5 - China
2750 Buford Hwy, Duluth, GA 30096
Wok Provisions has an extensive Chinese menu with items you won’t find at your stereotypical AmericanChinese fusion restaurant! Their soup dumplings are a perfect appetizer to get your meal started. As for mains, you can’t go wrong with ordering the spicy Chongqing chicken which is diced fried chicken with numbing and Sichuan peppercorns. For dessert, their fried pumpkin mochi with a red bean filling provides the perfect mix of subtle sweetness in a dessert.
SPOTLIGHT: GWINNETT BEVERAGE TOUR
By: Ashley Topham
There’s nothing better during the holidays than exploring your local brewery scene with friends and family for a night of fun conversation and flowing spirits. We’ve compiled a Gwinnett beverage tour highlighting local breweries so you can get a taste of the flavors coming out of our county! Whether you want to do a boozy day tour to fit in multiple spots or you’re looking to expand on your brewery experience by visiting a new location during the week, we’ve got you covered.
Stop 2 - Sugar Hill Distillery
1166 Church St, Sugar Hill, GA 30518
Located in downtown Sugar Hill next to the historic local cemetery, this German-style brewery and distillery is best experienced outside on their patio at night. This establishment also is a full-service restaurant with seating also inside that offers a viewpoint of their brewing area. We recommend giving their Berliner Weisse a try, which is a sour wheat-style beer with one of their homemade fruit syrups such as mango or raspberry for a refreshing tasting experience. Trying a traditional German style beer while you’re here is also a must so we recommend giving their Glückspilz –Lucky Devil Kölsch a try. This style of beer originates from Cologne, Germany and has subtle fruit and hop flavors with a refreshing finish.
Stop 4 - StillFire Brewing
343 US-23, Suwanee, GA 30024
With over 25 craft beers and seltzers on top as well as local food trucks to satisfy your cravings, this brewery in downtown Suwanee is the perfect place to drink with a group. They have a variety of unique craft beers such as their Cuban Coffee stout which is a 7.9% beer with chocolate and coffee aromas as well as a silky finish. If you plan your visit during their seasonal months, you can also try their Christmas Ale called Yule Shoot Your Ale Out which is a 7.1% English-style beer with notes of chocolate, nutmeg and cinnamon all served in a crushed peppermint rimmed glass. This beer literally tastes like Christmas is a pint!
Stop 1 - Indio Brewing
5019 W Broad St NE M145, Sugar Hill, GA 30518
This Latin-owned brewery is tucked into the heart of downtown Sugar Hill and provides a truly unique drinking experience. Their fun tagline of “Don’t be a prick” can be seen both inside the store and on their drink glasses. They offer a variety of craft beers for any palette but their Sour Patch 5% ABV sour ale is a personal favorite! This craft beer features a blend of raspberries and wild strawberries for a tart finish and is the perfect representation of this brewery's capabilities.
Stop 3 - Slow Pour Brewing Company
407 N Clayton St, Lawrenceville, GA 30046
This gem located in the depot district of downtown Lawrenceville has spacious and scenic seating inside and outside to accommodate groups of any size. We recommend getting their Cotillion which is a 5.2% ABV blonde ale that’s both light and dry. This brew was one of the 1st craft beers actually brewed in Lawrenceville so you get to taste a little piece of brew history during each sip! If you want something more fruity and refreshing, give their Living is Easy a taste! This 6.5% pastry sour is made with ripe strawberries and has notes of graham cracker for a sweet dessert experience. Make sure to stop inside and take a picture in their photo booth to commemorate your craft beer experience!
Stop 5 - Cultivation Brewery
650 Langford Dr, Norcross, GA 30071
A true microbrewery located in Norcross, this local hotspot offers a rotating weekly menu of craft beer made in small batches. Depending on when you visit, we recommend trying their Cream Ale which is a light American beer of 5.3% ABV brewed with corn and Perle hops giving it a light flavor and a thick and creamy head. Their Master Gardener which is a Double IPA featuring notes of red berry, citrus and other tropical fruit provides a low bitterness profile but a nice hop aroma.

NEVER HAVE I EVER... TRIED FUSION FOOD
By: Ashley Topham
As a certified foodie (by my personal standards) I’ve always loved exploring different cultures through their food. There’s something so interesting about tasting the spices and herbs used to create flavor profiles that are unique to each culture’s traditional dishes. I’ve tried a variety of different global cuisines from Croatian to Thai but I’ve never had the opportunity to try fusion cuisine until I found Chinese Dhaba! Chinese Dhaba serves Chinese food with an Indian twist with two locations in Gwinnett. The Indo-Chinese cuisine served here actually has a lengthy history dating back to the 19th century. It combines the spiciness of Indian cuisine with Chinese flavors like soy sauce, vinegar and Sichuan creating the perfect balance of umami with spice.
Appetizer: For an appetizer, I decided to go with the Gobi Manchurian which is a popular Indo-Chinese dish dating back to the 1970’s. This vegetarian version of the dish features cauliflower fried until crispy with onions, cilantro and housemade Manchurian sauce.
My first impression of this dish was that it was a total flavor bomb! I’ve always been a fan of cauliflower but the Manchurian sauce adds a sweet and tangy flavor which the cauliflower takes on!
Main Dish: Choosing a main was so difficult because everything on the menu looked incredible! I decided to choose the Szechuan Hakka noodles which are a thin type of Indian/Chinese noodle that's cooked until al dente and then stir-fried with oil, soy sauce and veggies. As a spice lover, the Szechuan definitely brought a new level of heat that I wasn’t used to. I definitely recommend ordering the mango lassi to drink because the cooling and fruitiness of the mango lassi balanced out the spice level of the noodles!
Dessert: To close out an incredible meal, I chose the Shahi Falooda Kulfi for dessert. This dish features vermicelli which are noodles cooked in rice milk served with kulfi ice cream, dipped in rabri and garnished with rose syrup and nuts. I haven’t tried many Indian desserts before except for a rose syrup lassi which I absolutely loved so I was really excited about this pick! My favorite part of this incredible dessert was definitely the creaminess of the Kulfi ice cream and the floral notes of the rose syrup. I’m also a huge fan of different textures which the vermicelli noodles and garnish of nuts provided.
Overall, I had an amazing experience tasting the food from Chinese Dhaba and now I can say I’ve tried Indo-Chinese cuisine. Definitely give this restaurant a try and discover the cultural fusion of flavors!

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: TEA LAM'S CORNER
By: Ashley Topham

Facebook: Tea Lam's Corner
We love spotlighting small businesses across Gwinnett and their owners who make the communities within our county diverse and truly unique. One newly opened business in particular called Tea Lam’s Corner is making waves in the culinary scene within downtown Lawrenceville by offering traditional Vietnamese sips and bites. We sat down with owner Luan Phan for a taste test to bring his and his wife’s story to light as well as a review of their incredible dishes.
Luan Phan’s journey to becoming a restaurant owner was completely unexpected. He was working near Lawrenceville Square as a project manager and had no intention of going into the food industry until an idea popped in his head one night. After having to head back to the office to finish up some work, a craving for boba tea arose but Luan didn’t want to have to drive all the way to Duluth to grab one. It was right then and there that Luan decided he wanted to open a boba tea shop and after going home and telling his wife Thao Nguyen of his idea, the dream became a reality. Luan and Thao
Taste Test Time
Drinks: The Creme Brulee boba latte has a delicious caramel taste with a caramelized sugar topping that you can “crack” open with your straw, giving you a true creme brulee experience. All of their boba drinks also come in a cat shaped dome cup adding a cute visual component. Another tasty drink from the menu is their homemade yogurt drinks that come in a variety of flavors but the lychee one in particular is delicious! This recipe is full of probiotics and is very refreshing.
Mains: As someone who's never had traditional pho before, I had no idea what to expect from their Shrimp Pho (Pho Tom)! I was advised by the owner to make his favorite dipping sauce which consists of the restaurant’s homemade chili sauce combined with sriracha, hoisin sauce and a squeeze of lime. He recommended dipping the shrimp from the pho into the sauce and then sipping the broth. Their shrimp pho is full of rich flavor and is the perfect dish to enjoy especially during the cold weather. The thick rice noodles within the pho added just the right amount of chewy texture to the broth. Another main dish that I tried was the combination Vermicelli (Bun Dac Biet) which came with grilled shrimp, fish sauce, egg rolls, sliced cucumber and peanuts all on top of thick Vermicelli noodles. This dish was a savory flavor bomb and was truly unlike any noodle dish I’ve tried before!
had no idea where they wanted to open their boba spot but soon a vacancy in the Lawrenceville Square opened up, giving them the perfect place to set up shop.
As soon as you walk inside Tea Lam’s Corner, the casual yet trendy atmosphere welcomes you inside. The entire interior design was completed by tireless hours of work by Luan, his wife and Luan’s old coworkers Phil and Derrick who would stop by after work to help out. This is the type of place where you can enjoy lunch with your friends, study and even work remotely! The natural wood tones of the custom bar area where you order your boba drinks and Vietnamese bites to eat along with the warm string lights provide a cozy ambiance for your meal. Another eye-catching aspect of the restaurant’s interior design is the custom art murals along the walls including a large cherry tree and a “hole in the wall” art piece which were all done by the owner’s wife Thao Nguyen. There’s also a back patio area that’s the owner’s favorite spot to sit back and relax, especially at night once the patio lights come on.
Appetizers: I tried the tempura shrimp as recommended by one of the team workers and wasn’t disappointed! The light and crispy tempura batter pairs well with the cooked shrimp and when dunked into the spicy sweet sauce that comes with it, this app is taken to the next level!
If you’re looking for a casual boba spot to relax with friends and enjoy the rich flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, then you need to check out Tea Lam’s Corner! Owner Luan Phan also wants to give a special thank you to everyone who came out to the grand opening of Tea Lam’s Corner and for everyone’s patience as they worked out their kinks during their first week because the support of the local community has meant everything to him and his wife.
HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE FOODIE EDITION
By: Abby Wilkerson
Last year, my seven-year-old nephew fell in love with fishing. He went completely off the deep end (ha), wanting to learn everything about his newfound hobby and realized he needed a lot more gear. We bought him a rod for Christmas, his stocking was stuffed with lures, he received a tackle box for his birthday and his Easter basket overflowed with worms both alive and in gummy form.
Buying for a friend with a hobby is a gift in itself. It takes all the guesswork out of giving, practically guaranteeing you the top spot on the Favorite Aunt list. Lucky enough to have a friend who is a foodie? From kitchen tools to restaurant gift cards, mixer attachments to classic wooden spoons, the gifts are endless. Read on for a few of our tried-and-true foodie gifts.
For the Charcuterie Devotee: A Handmade Cutting Board
If assembling the perfect snack board is your friend’s jam, imagine their delight at receiving a custom cutting board that is just as beautiful to display as it is to use. Tracy and Fran Maddox began making cutting boards in their Sugar Hill garage just for fun. After gifting several to family and friends, they realized they might have a burgeoning business which led to Maddox Wood Design! They hand-cut all-natural wood to use for their cutting boards, serving trays and other unique items.

Grocery store chocolate bars in stockings are for kids. Upgrade your giftgiving to a collection of artisanal chocolates. Order online or visit the store (in the oldest remaining building in downtown Duluth!) to select the truffle flavors yourself. The store also features a range of unique gifts, handmade fudge and house-churned ice cream that’s clearly a reward for getting your Christmas shopping done.

Perfect Hostess Gift: Organic Sourdough
Sure, we all learned how to make trendy sourdough in 2020. But how many of us mastered anything beyond the basic loaf? For those whose starter turned fuzzy and stinky, allow me to introduce you to River Birch Bread Co. River Birch Bread Co. features your basic offerings, along with unique, delicious flavors such as jalapeno cheddar, Nutella and blueberry goat cheese. Take a loaf as the perfect hostess gift, gift it to your mother-in-law for Christmas morning or eat an entire loaf yourself. It’s all organic so it’s probably fine. Good for you, even.

Bobby Flay is My Brother-In-Law: Gourmet Spices
Buying for a foodie, but not a foodie yourself? Oof, that’s scary. You need an expert. “Like a good neighbor….” No no no, wrong expert. You don’t need Jake, you need Nancy. Located on the Lawrenceville Square, Nancy’s Candy & Spice features elusive seasonings and blends, herbs and spices, infused olive oils, teas and more. Nancy is not only a purveyor of gourmet spices but will assist you in creating the perfect gift for your top chef. Can’t decide on just one? Eight crazy nights = eight crazy spices.

The holidays are a time to come together with loved ones, enjoy each other’s company and share in seasonal traditions. If you’re looking for something new to add to your family’s holiday traditions or seeking inspiration for a cocktail of your own, swap out the eggnog and try one of these seasonal drinks from cultures around the globe!
CRAVE CRAVE TIPSY: HOLIDAY COCKTAILS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
COQUITO
Eggnog’s Puerto Rican cousin, this is a tropical twist on the traditional holiday drink. Made with coconut milk, condensed milk, rum, vanilla and baking spices like cinnamon, Coquito is a thick, sweet beverage that’s sure to shake up your holiday routine. Served cold, it’s perfect for celebrating the holidays in warmer climates or for pairing with a warm meal. Some recipes also include a pinch of nutmeg or clove for extra warmth.
MULLED WINE
Mulled wine is a holiday staple originating in the Roman Empire, spreading throughout Europe and eventually landing in my home. This warm, spiced red wine is made with cinnamon, cloves and citrus, creating a delicious aromatic drink that’s perfect for cold winter nights. It’s often served at holiday markets and gatherings, filling the air with the scent of festive spices. I like to serve this drink in a glass mug with a large cinnamon stick and orange slice resting in the wine, continually adding to this drink’s rich flavors.
PONCHE NAVIDEÑO
Ponche Navideño is a traditional Mexican fruit punch enjoyed during Christmas. Made by simmering fruits like guava, tejocote, apples and tamarind with cinnamon and cane sugar, this punch is both sweet and tangy. The punch is also made with hibiscus flowers to add a light floral note and provide a warm red color. Often served hot, it can be spiked with tequila or rum for those wanting a little kick with their punch!
GLÖGG
In Scandinavia, glögg is the holiday drink of choice. Coming from the Swedish word glödga, meaning “to heat”, the drink is similar to mulled wine but a little more involved and way more fun to pronounce! Originally created to make a bad wine more drinkable, it consists of red wine, vodka or rum, sugar and spices such as cardamom and cloves. Glögg is traditionally served with raisins and almonds in the cup, offering a bit of texture with every sip.

WE DiG: COOKING CLASSES

Or is hosting thrust upon them?” Whichever of these camps you may fall into, the fact of the matter is that your family is coming for the holidays and they’re going to be hungry. Don’t panic and call a caterer just yet. Every great chef has to start somewhere. Wine Pairing Class
Sip Happens
3890 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road | Suwanee, GA 30024 siphappens.wine
Obviously, we’re serving turkey for Thanksgiving, which is poultry, so that goes with white wine. But the side dishes are savory, so that's red wine... but Nana only drinks white wine because red wine gives her indigestion. Is rosé a compromise..?.. Oh, sip! If this is your inner monologue, the experts at Sip Happens can help.
“This meal can cause a plethora of conflicting flavors,” said Sip Happens co-founder Laurie Collins. “The good news is that you can choose a variety of wines to enjoy with this mash-up of cuisine.”
Laurie can help you choose the perfect wines to compliment those epic holiday meals at Sip Happens’ wine pairing class on Saturday, November 23 at 3:00 p.m. The class is $50/person; reservations are required.

Why should all the work fall to the grown-ups? Edible Education hosts Thanksgiving Break camps (two sessions daily: 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.) geared toward kids ages 5-16 years. Campers learn how to actively participate in meal planning and preparation (maybe this is actually a Christmas gift for parents?). Menu items include holiday sprouts, orange cranberry scones and the perfect option for Friday leftovers: sweet potato turkey tacos. We’re not saying you should open a bottle of wine and let your kids cook Christmas dinner – but we’re not saying you shouldn’t either.

TASTE TEST: SUSHI SENSATION
By: The DiG Team
Let's roll our taste buds on a delicious adventure as we indulge in some traditional Japanese cuisine! No need to grab your passport; our DiG Team had the sushi-sational privilege of welcoming Nakato Japanese Restaurant to our office for a Temaki Party! What’s a Temaki Party, you ask? It’s a fun gathering where we flex our culinary creativity and hand-roll our own sushi cones! This holiday tradition brings friends and family together for fellowship and, of course, a tasty meal.
Chef Kinjo, who just happens to be the father of one of our fabulous DiG team members, guided us step by step on how to create our own sushi masterpieces. Let’s just preface that he made it look way easier than it was! Ready to see how we rolled? Check out the step-bystep below!
Step 1: Grab the Seaweed
First things first, get yourself a sheet of nori. That’s fancy for seaweed. Hold it horizontally with the shiny side facing down. It’s like the little black dress of sushi—always in style!
Step 2: Spread The Sushi Rice
Time to get your hands a bit sticky! Spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the left third of the nori in a triangular shape. Think of it as creating a delicious little canvas for your masterpiece!
Step 3: Add Your Fillings
Here comes the fun part! Place your desired ingredients inside. Our team went with avocado, cucumber and imitation crab but feel free to unleash your inner sushi artist—the roll knows no limits! Get wild and add whatever tickles your taste buds!
Step 4: Roll It Up
Now, roll the bottom left corner of the nori up to the middle of the top edge to form a triangle. Keep rolling until you’ve created a fabulous cone shape. It’s like a sushi ice cream cone—who wouldn’t want that?
Step 5: Seal The Deal
To make sure everything stays together, put a tiny piece of rice on the tip of the nori to secure those folds. We want this beauty to stay intact while you devour it!
Step 6: Enjoy The Goodness

1. “Temaki” translates to “hand roll”—“te” means hand, and “maki” means to roll. So, you’re rolling up some love with your hands!
2. It’s true—Kentucky Fried Chicken is a holiday favorite in Japan! Forget turkey; the Japanese feast on crispy fried chicken during Christmas.

COCKTAIL SPOTLIGHT
TIJUANA BRASS
DiG writer Jay Ledbetter is a local legend in the Gwinnett bar scene, creating custom cocktails and curated beverages for the community while bartending at Local Republic in Lawrenceville. His Tijuana Brass cocktail made it all the way to second place of the prestigious Bar & Restaurant News' 2023 Best Holiday Cocktail competition, beating out 14 other drinks from bartenders across the country. One outlet describes the libation as “a delightful concoction that not only embodies the festive season but also showcases the unparalleled creativity and expertise that has become synonymous with Ledbetter’s reputation and Lawrenceville’s Local Republic.” This nationally recognized recipe went head to head with restaurant chain Eureka - a huge accomplishment just to be amongst the rankings of. The aim of the competition is to "capture the spirit of the holidays" and we (along with thousands of other voters) think the Tijuana Brass does just that!
Autumn spices and fresh herbs wrap this tequila drink in a warm blanket of flavor. Savory, semi-sweet notes dance with rosemary and ginger, keeping a delicate balance that brings forth holiday nostalgia. Sip on this while listening to your grandfather’s old vinyl collection.

ROAD TRIP NASHVILLE: A FOODIE’S GUIDE TO MUSIC CITY
By: Rylee Govoreau
When you think of Nashville, you may immediately think of Honky Tonk, Music City or Broadway Street. While Nashville might be known for its rich music history, Nashville also hits all the right notes with its vibrant foodie scene. From fiery hot chicken to mouthwatering BBQ and quirky brunch spots, Nashville offers something for every palate. Whether you're in Germantown, East Nashville (a personal favorite!), Downtown or The Gulch, there’s no shortage of places to indulge. Let's dig into what makes Music City a foodie’s paradise. Warning: This article is going to make you hungry.
EXPLORE NASHVILLE’S FOOD NEIGHBORHOODS
Before we dig in, it’s helpful to understand that Nashville is a city of diverse food neighborhoods, each with its own flair. East Nashville, my personal favorite neighborhood, is known for its trendy eateries and laid-back vibe, while Germantown offers a more upscale, historical feel with farm-to-table favorites. The Gulch is where you’ll find hip, modern dining alongside iconic Nashville murals like the famous angel wingsyes, you know the ones, and we won’t blame you for snagging this photo op. Neighborhoods like 12 South, Wedgewood-Houston, Sylvan Park and The Nations also serve up their own local flavor, from casual bites to fine dining.
NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN: MUSIC CITY’S STAPLE
Other than Music City, when you think of Nashville, two words that naturally follow are “hot chicken.” It’s true - Nashville’s legendary hot chicken is a must-try for any visitor. Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack, the birthplace of this iconic dish, has been serving up spicy, crispy goodness for over 70 years. If you want to taste the original, head to Prince’s where the heat levels range from mild to “burn your face off.” For a slightly more tourist-friendly version, Hattie B’s is another great spot to get your hot chicken fix without sacrificing flavor. 400 Degrees and Pepperfire deserve a mention here and at Pepperfire, you can get Nashville Hot Chicken on top of a deep-fried grilled cheese sandwich topped with apple pie filling…calories don’t count on vacation, right? Just be sure to have the Tums and Pepto close by.
BBQ: SLOW-COOKED PERFECTION
The BBQ scene in Nashville is a heated debate among locals, and with good reason. From smoky pulled pork to tender ribs, the city boasts a variety of BBQ joints each with its loyal following. Martin’s BBQ Joint is famous for whole-hog barbecue, while Peg Leg Porker delivers award-winning ribs and pulled pork with a side of Southern charm. If you’re near East Nashville, Edley's BBQ offers a laid-back vibe and delicious smoked meats. Don't forget Shotgun Willie’s, where the brisket melts in your mouth or Bar-B-Cutie for a quick, satisfying bite.
BRUNCH: THE
MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE WEEKEND
Nashville knows how to brunch which is arguably the most important meal of the weekend! Biscuit Love in The Gulch is a Nashville staple, prepare to wait in line—although, it's worth it for their famous "Bonuts" (biscuit doughnuts - YUM). However, when we say wait in line, we mean it. Mondays, Fridays, weekends and holidays are their peak days and wait times are generally an hour or more. For a more modern twist on southern brunch and possibly not as long of a wait, The Butter Milk Ranch offers indulgent dishes like chicken and waffles and if you’re looking for a high-end experience, brunch at Audrey’s will leave you wowed with innovative, beautifully plated dishes.
OFF THE EATEN PATH: UNIQUE MUSIC CITY DINING
When you’re looking for something a little different, Nashville has plenty of unique dining experiences. Etch, in the heart of Downtown, is known for its globally inspired menu and innovative dishes. The Catbird Seat is a must for foodies wanting an immersive dining experience—it’s a chef’s table concept where the meal unfolds like a story. Skull’s Rainbow Room in Downtown Nashville’s historic Printers Alley district doubles as a dining and entertainment experience as one of Nashville’s only downtown jazz lounges. Pro tip: try one of their award-winning cocktails.
Now that your mouth is watering, it’s time to plan your trip to Nashville. We’ll see you there - save us a seat!
Braselton’s classic, small-town charm truly shines during the holidays. Explore unique shopping, award-winning restaurants, traditional holiday events and beautiful Christmas lights.

PIT STOP CHATTANOOGA: QUICK BITES, COFFEE AND SWEET TREATS
By: Rylee Govoreau
Nestled between the mountains and the river, Chattanooga is more than just a scenic pit stop—it’s a hidden gem for quick bites, craft coffee, local brews and some of the best ice cream you’ll find in the South. Whether you’re taking a break from exploring the city’s outdoor offerings or just passing through, Chattanooga's neighborhoods are packed with foodie destinations that deserve your attention. Here's where to go for a quick, satisfying snack, caffeine boost or a cool treat after a long day.
FOODIE NEIGHBORHOODS TO EXPLORE
Before we dig in, we’ll provide a lay of the land so you know where to begin because Chattanooga’s neighborhoods each bring something unique to the table. The North Shore is where you’ll find local gems like Clumpies and Milk & Honey, all while soaking in views of the Tennessee River. St. Elmo offers charm and history with spots like Mr. T’s nestled at the base of Lookout Mountain. The Southside is Chattanooga’s trendy district, packed with breweries like Hutton & Smith and Mean Mug Coffeehouse, while Bluff View Art District transports you with its artistic flair and classic café vibes.
COFFEE SHOPS: FUEL YOUR ADVENTURE
We’ll jump straight into the important thing to start off our pit stop - caffeine. Fortunately, Chattanooga’s coffee scene is buzzing with local charm. One of the most iconic spots is locally owned Milk & Honey on the North Shore, where you can sip handcrafted coffee or indulge in their creamy house-made gelato. They are famous for their gelato and coffee, but they’ve got it all - from Southern brunch favorites to mimosa flights to specialty sweets baked in-house daily. For a European café vibe, head to Rembrandt’s Coffee House in Bluff View Art District. Their fresh pastries and cozy courtyard will make you feel like you've been transported straight to a Parisian café - yes please!
If you’re craving something a little quirky, Mean Mug Coffeehouse on the Southside is famous for its giant cinnamon rolls—seriously, they’re the size of your head! For a local favorite, check out Oaks Coffeehouse in Hixson, where they serve up excellent coffee in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. And don’t forget Sleepyhead Coffee, located in downtown Chattanooga, which is known for its plant-based drinks and cute, minimalist vibe—ideal for those who want their caffeine with a conscious twist.
BREWS & BOOZE: SIP ON LOCAL FLAVOR
Arguably just as important as caffeine, let’s dive into Chattanooga’s thriving brewery scene. Consistently on the list for best breweries in Chattanooga, it's no wonder why
craft beer lovers, locals and tourists alike, flock to places like Hutton & Smith Brewing Company. Located in the Southside district, this spot is a geologist’s dream, with beers named after minerals and geological formations—perfect for both beer nerds and nature enthusiasts. For something with a funky vibe, head over to Oddstory Brewing Co., where you’ll find innovative beers in a whimsical setting.
Five Wits Brewing Company, also in the Southside, delivers bold flavors in a trendy taproom, while Monkey Town Brewing offers a range of well-crafted beers paired with an eclectic mix of food items. And if you’re making multiple brewery stops, you'll find Five Wits shares the block with Oddstory, making it easy to hop between two fantastic spots without missing a beat.
WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM: A SWEET END TO YOUR DAY
No trip to Chattanooga is complete without indulging in some ice cream, and the city doesn’t disappoint! Consistently rated as one of the best places to get ice cream in Chattanooga, Clumpies Ice Cream Co. is an iconic spot known for its inventive flavors and small-batch approach. Whether you're into classic flavors or adventurous options, Clumpies always delivers a scoop worth savoring. Head over to the North Shore to enjoy their ice cream while taking in views of the Walnut Street Bridge. Expect a line at Clumpies, but don’t turn away when you see a long line - they move fast!
For those who love options, The Ice Cream Show offers over 17,000 flavor combinations (yes, you read that right!) by mixing ice cream or frozen yogurt with a variety of toppings. You’ll find this spot at the foot of the pedestrian bridge, perfect for a sweet treat after a scenic walk. Down in St. Elmo, Mr. T’s Pizza & Ice Cream serves up pizza and ice cream in a retro-style setting—great for families or anyone who appreciates a touch of nostalgia without sacrificing flavor. And if you find yourself back at Milk & Honey, don’t leave without trying their gelato. It’s the perfect Italian-inspired finale to a day of exploring the city.
Whether you’re stopping in for a quick bite or planning to stay a while, Chattanooga’s local food and drink scene is thriving, and understandably so. Grab a coffee, a beer or an ice cream cone, and discover what makes this city a must-visit for food lovers!

HOLIDAY ADVENTURES
Whether you are scrimping or splurging on your holiday plans, Explore Gwinnett’s top recommendations for welcoming visitors this holiday season are here.
Surprise....she’s back! One of Atlanta’s most beloved and iconic holiday traditions (70 years!) is back, but with a twist...in Gwinnett! Atlanta’s very own Pink Pig “Penelope” (or Penny for short) will start a new tradition at the 2024 Georgia Festival of Trees, which has moved to the Gas South District for 2024. The Pink Pig will be a highlight of the Festival of Trees but with a modern twist. The new ride is a rail-less, open ride guiding children through a forest of dazzling Christmas trees, live music and entertainment, a local holiday market and more. It is a must-have holiday family picture!
Just up the road, Margaritaville at Lanier Islands will transform into their action-packed “License to Chill Snow Island.” Kids will adore gliding down Blizzard Mountain, one of North America’s longest snow rides at 575 feet long and eight stories high! For the slightly less courageous, there are carnival rides and a wondrous stroll through the dazzling Lakeside Light Spectacular. The event will open in mid-November and close early February.
It is not just about Christmas. Peachtree Corners will celebrate the “Holiday Glow” by lighting a 6-foot Menorah and an innovative LED tree at the Town Green on December 1st. Free and family- friendly is our fave kind of event. Local singers will lead a holiday sing-along, a holiday concert from Geek Squad, trackless train rides, visits from Santa and a local artisan market.
For those in a holiday throwback mode, plan a visit to Historic downtown Norcross’s Holiday Village. Hop aboard their complimentary carriage rides, running every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., starting December 6th through December 20th.
Held the first weekend of December, you will find a sleighful of festive activities, including a Lozano Farms petting zoo, face painting, photos with Santa, Christmas carolers and even some special appearances by Disney princesses.
Downtown Duluth will be Decking the Halls the second weekend of December. There will be a real snow playground, a giant snow slide, free crafts and visits with Santa. Delicious food trucks and an eclectic holiday market will also make this a great Saturday visit!
Juggling everyone’s diverging plans can be a challenge – but for those with widely diverse interests, the Lawrenceville Arts Center will be the place to be in November and December, with over twenty-five wildly varying events, ranging from live comedy (Matt Walsh! Tim Meadows!), children’s theater and the Southern Circuit of Indie Filmmakers. There’s a Hispanic art exhibit, Puerto Rican Salsa dancers, a Motown Christmas, and a sizzling Earth, Wind + Fire Experience. And for the purists, the one-man Tony Rodriguez's “A Christmas Carol” will be back for its 18th year. The Aurora Theatre’s perennial favorite “A Christmas Canteen” is back on the Grand Stage for its 29th year, a dazzling array of musical numbers, riotous bursts of comedy, a star-studded cast and the perfect sprinkle of nostalgia.
Atlanta’s premier drive-through Christmas light show features over 1 million LED lights, set to a rollicking musical background. Open from November 15-December 29, the sparking extravaganza is sure to wow your visitors and kiddos alike.
There’s so much more going on this holiday season...visit www.exploregwinnett.org for all the event details!
