EATS WE DiG: GWINNETT’S BEST LATE-NIGHT MUNCHIE SPOTS

Remember the Taco Bell ‘Fourthmeal’ campaign from the mid-2000s?

“There’s a moment at night when you gotta have a Fourthmeal.” Whether you're winding down from a night out or battling the midnight munchies (or you’ve been out late fighting crime – hi, Batman!), finding an open spot to fuel late-night adventures is crucial. Read on to discover a few of Gwinnett’s best late-night eateries and ensure that you never go to bed hungry again.

FOR A PHO-NOMENAL LATE NIGHT BITE

Though pho is a traditional Vietnamese breakfast dish, modern night owls have deemed it the perfect post-drinking bedtime snack – some even say it cures any hangover that ails you. Whatever time of day you prefer pho, New Super Pho is there! What makes their pho so delicious is they simmer a special pho broth for over 10 hours, giving it the perfect balance of flavor and richness. Besides pho, they serve a wide variety of authentic Vietnamese dishes including bánh mì. Open every day of the week from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m.! 3330 Satellite Blvd, Duluth, GA 30096

FOR NIGHT OWLS LOOKING FOR AN ADVENTURE

Every friend group has one who turns into a pumpkin at midnight. Keep Cinderella alert and have a good time with an activity at TopGolf Buford! If hitting golf balls at giant targets in private heated and cooled bays doesn’t keep the peepers open, maybe their chef-driven menu will. From savory shareables like cheesy macaroni bites and buffalo chicken dip to decadent deserts like their iconic hole-in-ones which are cinnamon sugar-dusted donut holes, their menu has it all. If you like things extra

sweet, order an injectable flavor of chocolate, raspberry jelly or Bavarian cream for your hole-in-ones. Open until 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and midnight Sunday through Thursday. 2935 Buford Drive | Buford

FOR

FOODIES WHO CRAVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT

If the first thing that comes to mind when you think of late-night eating is waffles and fast food, then think again: E.M. Bop offers authentic Korean BBQ and other traditional Korean dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The tabletop grilling experience is enhanced by charcoal grills for that rich, smoky Korean BBQ flavor and built-in fans pull the smoke away so you won’t go to bed smelling like a campfire. If you’re really hungry and ready to make a huge late-night mistake, the all-youcan-eat menu is a carnivore paradise. Open 12 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day (last call at 2 am). 2442 Pleasant Hill Road | Duluth

FOR WHEN ONLY A CLASSIC WILL DO

For all of the fun options on this list, sometimes all you want after a night out is a tried-and-true favorite: pizza. But don’t waste your time with some dude named Father Jon or Tiny Julius – give the killer pizza menu at Parma Tavern a go. They make their pizza dough fresh with Caputo 00 flour and shred a cheese blend in-house. Along with some toppings of your choice, it all goes into a brick oven to get baked to pizza perfection! The entire menu can be ordered in 14” (for sharing) or 8” (Joey doesn’t share food). The menu includes an eclectic mix of Italian-inspired tavern dishes, including hearty snacks, fresh pasta, house-ground burgers and monthly specials. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. and after 10 p.m., it’s 21+ only to enter. 3350 Buford Drive | Buford

TASTE TEST: COFFEES & CAFES VS. BEERS & BREWERIES

COFFEE SHOPS

Located in Downtown Suwanee, Warm Waves has the perfect trendy and retro vibe inside to jumpstart your morning. They make all of their syrups and roast their own beans – it doesn’t get better than that! We recommend giving their vanilla latte a try with almond milk for that perfect sweet and nutty flavor. They also have a rotating seasonal menu of drinks with customized syrups that you can’t go wrong with!

Beans & Butter Coffeehouse - Lawrenceville

This black-owned business has a cozy coffeehouse vibe inside with a wide variety of delicious sips to choose from along with housemade bakery items! Our recommendation is to try their honey almond latte, they make the syrup in-house and it's truly one-of-a-kind. You might as well grab one of their pastries too (their almond croissant is to die for) and enjoy a relaxing morning at the cafe.

Alchemist On the Divide - Duluth

This new addition to Downtown Duluth has a magical vibe with nods to alchemy throughout the shop. They use Dutch Coffee extract for their brews which gives their drinks a rich flavor profile. We recommend giving one of their specialty brews a try such as their Blackberry Dutch which uses a delicious blackberry syrup.

This one’s for the brew lovers who start their day with a delicious latte from a cafe and end it with a craft beer from a local brewery! Get ready to enjoy delicious brews in Gwinnett from sunrise till sunset with our curated itinerary!

BEERS & BREWERIES

Slow Pour Brewing Co. - Lawrenceville

Located in the old railroad district of Downtown Lawrenceville, this brewery is a popular place where locals unwind with a craft beer and enjoy the twinkling lights and garden space of their outdoor area. Grab a pint of one of their sours for a truly fruity and summer experience such as their No Love Lost which features notes of raspberry, vanilla and rose hips.

Cultivation Brewing Co. - Norcross

Another local favorite, this brewery offers an intimate drinking experience with seating both inside and outside. They have a variety of beer types for every palette but for that extra summer vibe, give their Green Thumb a try! This brew symbolizes their commitment to supporting the community as it is made with Georgia-grown hops from the Nocross Discovery Garden and from their head brewers and friend’s garden.

StillFire Brewing - Suwanee

Enjoy the family-friendly vibes of this Downtown Suwanee brewery! From their large outdoor space complete with cozy fire pits and their inside area often filled with live music or trivia events, this brewery has it all! They have a ton of craft beer options but we recommend giving their Koastal Krush a try which is a mimosa sour for a nice and refreshing brew.

TIPSY: TURNING DAYTIME DRINKS INTO NIGHTTIME COCKTAILS

When first entering the world of cocktails, it can be hard to find your perfect drink. With an infinite number of possible beverages, each having its own unique name that doesn’t describe the flavor or ingredients the drink contains, mixology can feel like more of an “ology” than it actually is.

However, you don’t need to suffer to find something that suits you. Think of your favorite non-alcoholic drink, use that as your base and make it into a cocktail! Here are some cocktail concepts that transform an

If you’re a fan of sweet tea, try The Southern Hospitality, a sweet tea whiskey sour:

• 4 oz of black tea

• 2 oz of bourbon

• ¾ oz of fresh-squeezed lemon juice

• ¾ oz of simple syrup

1. Stir and strain into a mason jar

2. Add ice and top with a peach slice

If you’re more of a Coca-Cola fan, make into a sweet and smoky nighttime treat, the Smoked Cherry Batanga:

• 2 oz of mezcal

• ½ oz of fresh-squeezed lime juice

• 2 dashes of aromatic bitters

• 1 bar spoon of maraschino cherry syrup

1. Rim a Collins glass with salt and add all ingredients

2. Add cola until the glass is half full, then top with ice

3. Garnish with a lime wheel and cherry skewer

Finally, The Botanist’s Boba cocktail perfectly pairs sweet and floral flavors, making it a great drink for any boba tea fan:

• 2 oz of gin

• 4 oz of taro boba tea

• 2 oz coconut milk

• ½ oz of lavender syrup

• A handful of boba pearls

1. Add all ingredients to a wine glass

2. Add ice, stir and garnish with a mint sprig

ARTS GET A HOBBY: MISCHIEF, MAGIC AND MULCH

Are you tired of the same old flower box view? Have an eyesore of a tree stump? Could your tomato plants use a little magic? Sounds like you need fairies but how do you attract them? Per Germanic and Celtic folklore, fairies enjoy offerings of honey, milk or fruits. But so do ants and critters, so maybe not. They like shiny and sparkly things, but that also sounds like a great way to lure a jewelry kleptomaniac to your home.

An easier way to welcome these tiny creatures to your outdoor area is by creating a fairy garden! Besides being welcoming spaces designed to attract fairies, these gardens are pint-sized, whimsical additions that invite curiosity.

First thing first: determine the location of your fairy garden. There is no wrong answer, but it will drive the type of plants and soil you can use successfully.

Next, you need a container. This is a whimsical fairy garden, so feel free to think outside the box. A teacup, bird cage, wheelbarrow, broken pot – the only requirement is that your vessel has drainage holes in the bottom. You should also consider the depth of your container to ensure there's enough room for roots to grow.

An optional item that might be helpful: a theme. While a theme is certainly not required, it may help narrow down decisions such as containers, plants and which of the adorable teeny tiny accessories you’ll want to purchase.

Sonya

1983 Main Street E. | Snellville

“The most creative containers I’ve ever seen for a fairy garden is a bathtub and the trunk of a Volkswagen Beetle.”

“The most creative theme I’ve ever done is a holistic meditation fairy garden, complete with fairies doing yoga and a little Buddha statue.”

“The best small, no-fail plants for our Georgia climate are coffee plants, ferns and mosses.”

Now that you’ve determined a location and container, it’s time to select your plants. In order to stay within the scale, you’ll want to choose dwarf or miniature varieties. Herbs, succulents and groundcovers are all great places to start. Make sure all the plants you choose enjoy the same amount of sunlight and water, lest your garden theme be Mad Max. The kind of dirt you need depends on the plants you are using.

If this seems more like a “how to plant plants in a container” than “how to create a fairy garden,” then I have good news: it’s time to choose your accessories. Miniatures can be found from craft and dollar stores to Amazon and Etsy.

Can’t quite find what you like? Make it yourself! Start with a small wooden birdhouse from a dollar store and add natural elements such as moss, twigs or bark to create delightful details. Have your kids create something with popsicle sticks, paint rocks or even contribute Legos and Polly Pockets. Use whatever you like – have fun!

Arrange your plants and accessories in the container on top of the soil and adjust your design. Don’t begin planting until you’re 100 percent satisfied and ready to commit.

The only limit to a whimsical fairy garden is your own imagination. Have a rather limited imagination? The interwebs are full of inspiration that can be stolen and improved upon or you can visit our friends at My Secret Garden in the Snellville Garden Center!

NEVER HAVE I EVER: TRIED ASIAN KARAOKE

Okay, so while nothing will ever top the OG karaoke experience in Japan, the Gwinnett karaoke scene is pretty freakin’ fire too. One of my faves is Do Re Mi in Duluth, located at 2550 Pleasant Hill Road. This spot gets it. You walk in, and boom—you’re in a private room with all the vibes—disco balls, mood lighting and a song list that’ll have you belting out everything from K-pop jams to throwback classics that hit you right in the feels.

When most people think of karaoke, they picture standing in front of a full bar of strangers, nervously clutching a mic and hoping no one judges you. But Asian karaoke? Nah, honey, it’s all about privacy. You and your friends get your own room, and you can sing your heart out without anyone looking at you sideways. It’s literally the freedom to be as extra as you want.

You get your own mics—yep, plural—so you and your bestie can go back and forth or you can just live out your solo diva fantasy. No judgment, just pure fun.

And the drinks? Yasss. They’ve got Asian beers, soju and all the classic cocktails you could want. And listen, they say the more drinks in you, the better you sound, and honestly, they’re kinda right. One drink in, and suddenly you’re shredding that high note like Mariah herself.

The food? Top-tier. Think crispy chicken wings, hot fried rice and all the late-night snacks that hit just right when you’re living your best karaoke life.

And then, when you think it can’t get any better, they bring out a complimentary fruit platter with watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe and honeydew. I mean, who doesn’t love a sweet little treat after you’ve just served a full-on concert?

So yeah, Tokyo’s karaoke will always have my heart, but Gwinnett’s doing it big. If you haven’t been yet, grab your crew, grab a mic and get ready to karaoke like you’re the next pop star.

Alright, let’s talk top 10 karaoke songs—because if you’re not belting out these jams, are you even doing karaoke right? From classics to raps and all the ballads in between, grab your mic, warm up those vocal cords and let’s dive into the ultimate playlist for your next karaoke night.

1. “Don’t Stop Believin” by Queen

2. “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj

3. “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor

Rent a kayak, canoe, pedal boat or paddle board from Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club, offering everything from one-day recreational opportunities to feeder programs for the U.S. National Teams for flat-water racing. If you’d rather let a motor do the work, hop on a pontoon from Port Royale Marina and cruise past tree-lined coves and luxury lakefront homes.

Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Fish Tales Lakeside Grille for an early lunch with a view.

MIDDAY: BEACH, BOATS & MARGARITAVILLE MAGIC

By now, the sun is high and the lake is buzzing with activity. If your idea of fun includes speeding across the waves, rent a jet ski or wakeboard boat from Harbor Landing and make some wakes. Prefer something more laid-back? Float along one of the sandy shores at Lanier Park or head to the Lake Lanier Olympic Park, where you can watch rowers and paddlers in action. Lake Lanier Olympic Park hosts several events including Food Truck Fridays, Summer Paddle Camps and even an annual Chicken Festival, so check their website for a calendar of their events.

If water slides, a wave pool and beachside cocktails sound more like your speed, then Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is your midday destination. This lakeside playground has everything from adrenalinepumping rides to a relaxing lazy river—plus, you can sip a frozen margarita while lounging on the white sand beach.

AFTERNOON: HIDDEN GEMS & LAKEFRONT STROLLS

After hours of sun-soaked fun, it’s time to slow things down. Make your way to Don Carter State Park, Lake Lanier’s only state park and take a scenic hike through the hardwood forest. If you’re up for an off-thebeaten-path adventure, check out Little Ridge Park, a peaceful spot with trails that lead to quiet, rocky shorelines perfect for skipping stones and catching a breeze.

EVENING: SUNSET SIPS & LAKESIDE BITES

Golden hour at Lake Lanier is pure magic. Head to Pelican Pete’s, a floating tiki bar and restaurant, where you can sip on a tropical cocktail while the sun dips below the horizon. For dinner, go all in with lakeside dining at The Twisted Oar, where seafood, steaks and live music set the scene for a perfect summer night.

NIGHTCAP: STARLIT SKIES & COZY STAYS

If you’re not ready to say goodbye just yet, book a night at Legacy Lodge at Lanier Islands for a luxurious lakeside retreat. Prefer something a little more rustic? Pitch a tent at one of the many campgrounds surrounding the lake and fall asleep to the sound of lapping waves.

From sunrise paddles to sunset cocktails, Lake Lanier is the ultimate summer playground perfect for a day trip!

EXPLORE

ROAD TRIP LAVENDER HAZE & MOUNTAIN DAYS

Roll down the windows, cue up your favorite summer playlist and breathe in that fresh mountain air—Dahlonega is calling and it smells like lavender. Tucked in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains and the heart of Georgia’s wine country, Dahlonega is best known for its gold rush history, rolling vineyards and small-town magic. But come summer, there’s an extra reason to hit the road: the Annual Red Oak Lavender Festival. This dreamy, purple-hued celebration is the perfect excuse for a weekend road trip - count us in!

Picture this: rows upon rows of fragrant lavender swaying in the breeze, bees lazily buzzing from bloom to bloom and the calming scent of fresh lavender filling the air. This is what you can expect to experience at Red Oak Lavender Farm, one of the largest lavender fields in the Southeast and home of the Annual Red Oak Lavender Festival.

During the festival, you can wander through their five acres of lavender fields, pick a bundle, and browse an array of handcrafted lavender products—think soaps, eye masks, simple syrup and even culinary treats like their famous lavender lemonade or lavender ice cream. Don’t miss the chance to snap a few dreamy photos, because let’s be real, your Instagram feed deserves this. If you aren’t able to snag tickets to the Lavender Festival before they sell out, you can still visit the farm and shop this summer to get your lavender fix in!

MIDDAY: EXPLORING DAHLONEGA’S HISTORIC SQUARE

Once you’ve had your fill of lavender-scented bliss, head into Dahlonega’s Historic Square, where brick buildings and wraparound porches set the scene for a leisurely afternoon. Stroll through quaint boutiques, art galleries and antique shops, then pop into The Fudge Factory for a taste of their famous homemade fudge. If you need a caffeine boost, Canopy + the Roots serves up locally roasted coffee in a cozy, plantfilled setting.

For lunch, grab a table at The Smith House, a legendary spot serving up family-style Southern comfort food since 1922. Think fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread and all the fixins’—because what’s a road trip without a little indulgence?

AFTERNOON: WATERFALLS & WINERIES

After lunch, take advantage of Dahlonega’s stunning natural beauty with a short drive to Amicalola Falls State Park, home to Georgia’s tallest waterfall. If you’re feeling adventurous, tackle the Amicalola Falls Trail, a staircase-climbing hike with breathtaking mountain views. Prefer something more low-key? A short walk will take you to a perfect waterfall viewing spot.

Next up: wine time. Dahlonega is the heart of North Georgia’s wine country, and a visit isn’t complete without a stop at one of its award-winning vineyards. Head to Wolf Mountain Vineyards, where you can sip a glass of crisp rosé on their hillside terrace, or cool down from a hot June day with a wine slushy at Accent Cellars. If you’re in the mood for a laid-back, family-run vineyard, Cavender Creek Winery offers fantastic wines and a down-to-earth vibe.

EVENING: SUNSET SIPS & SMALL-TOWN CHARM

As the sun starts to set, find your way back to town for dinner at Bourbon Street Grille, a cozy spot serving Cajun-inspired dishes like shrimp and grits and blackened catfish. Some reviews say that their balcony seating is the best view in Dahlonega. Afterward, take a twilight stroll around the square, where fairy lights twinkle above outdoor patios and live music drifts through the air.

A trip to Dahlonega is like stepping into a storybook—only this one smells like lavender, tastes like wine and comes with a side of mountain magic. Whether you’re here for the festival, the wine or just a scenic escape, one thing’s for sure: you’ll be planning your next visit before you even leave town.

HAUNTED PLACES IN GWINNETT

In my time digging into Gwinnett, I have come across all kinds of stories. Few things in this county surprise a well-traveled bookworm like me, but every now and then I come across a story that can’t be explained by natural logic. This collection of stories from Gwinnett’s haunted locations still sends a shiver down my lack of spine to this very day.

Our first stop in this paraNORMal investigation is Sugar Hill, where the former Sugar Hill Distillery resided, home to more spirits than just vodka and gin. Located next to the Sugar Hill Historic Cemetery, the building has long been haunted by the ghost of a girl named Alice and has been the site of several paranormal investigations. Though, the true identity of the Sugar Hill ghost remains a mystery.

Another site of interest to the paranormal community is Duluth’s Southeastern Railway Museum. The museum is home to the Washington Club car and is rumored to be haunted by a rather dashing ghost, who many claim takes the appearance of a welldressed man in old-fashioned clothing. The thought of peering into this old train car and seeing a sharply-dressed specter makes all five of my hearts skip a beat! The Southeastern Railway Museum has another historic haunted train car called the Superb. This car was the sleeper car of Warren G. Harding, the 29th president of the United States. When he passed away in 1923, this car was used to transport his body from San Francisco to Washington. Does the Superb still carry the spirit of President Harding? I squirm at the thought.

Lawrenceville, which is the oldest city in Gwinnett, has a rich history of paranormal activity and historic hauntings. The town is known for being the home of the Aurora Theatre’s Lawrenceville Ghost Tours. If you’re an amateur ghost hunter, taking the Ghost Tours is a great way to learn about the many spooky stories surrounding this historic town. Available in the fall, the tour also allows guests to enter a historic jail, getting a first-person experience with the spirits lurking within.

Despite the county’s warm and inviting atmosphere, many unexplainable stories lie just beneath the surface. You may find yourself fixating on every shadow that appears in the corner of your vision and every creaking sound that echoes through an empty building. Gwinnett is a treasure trove of hidden hauntings so grab a flashlight and explore!
