FROM THE MAYOR

What do we do with bad rainbows? We send them to prism. It’s a light sentence, but it gives them time to reflect.

This is my top joke received by Jim Kleiber. This one really made me laugh! Please keep sending your favorite dad jokes to gwhitlock@duluthga.net.

As many already know, the Council and I have been hosting neighborhood meetings to provide city updates, long-term vision, and to hear from you. We are working to get to every neighborhood, but we will be taking a break over the summer and restarting the program when Gwinnett County Schools start back-up. However, during the summer, the Council and I will be at some of the Town Green events in our Duluth labeled tent. Our goal is to be accessible, available and transparent.

Downtown Duluth continues to grow and change. The Knox house is being renovated for a new restaurant. A new specialty coffee shop, The Alchemist, has opened underneath Maple Street Biscuits and Rreal Taco purchased the Nacho Daddy lease and has started their build out. I am excited that Duluth is such an attractive destination that businesses continue to invest in our city and bring new experiences.

Duluth is also investing in the Downtown. Red Clay Theatre’s lobby will be getting renovated along with a new sound system, carpet and seats. The exterior will have more of a presence as well. The building will finally match the quality of performances hosted year-round.

Did you know that Eddie Owen Presents (EOP) has comedy on the first Fridays of the month? Did you know that EOP has jazz nights and is currently hosting a “Jazz Legacy Project”? Blue Grass, R&B, Rock, Country, and Song Writers. EOP is a great art venue, and we plan to continue the investment in these programs. Please follow EOP at eddieowenpresents.com and sign up for their newletters. These are great events for family and friends.

Invite your friends and bring the family to enjoy our great City!

ONLINE TOOL EMPOWERS COMMUNITY TO REPORT STORMWATER CONCERNS!

The Stormwater Division has launched a new online reporting system that allows individuals to report blocked or damaged storm drains, illegal dumping, flooding and erosion with just a few clicks. The tool streamlines (see what we did, there?) communication between the citizens of Duluth and city staff. The platform features a user-friendly interface to submit the location, a description and photos of the concern. By involving our community in proactive reporting, we can identify and resolve problems faster while creating a cleaner and safer environment.

Visit www.duluthga.net/stormwater or scan the QR code with your mobile device to access the reporting tool. You can also reach the Stormwater Division at 770.497.5311 or sw@duluthga.net.

DULUTH IS ABOUT TO GET EVEN MORE

C O L O R F U L !

The storm drains on Main St. transformed into works of art to bring awareness to keep our local waterways clean and thriving. This exciting project is made possible by the Explore Gwinnett Creativity Fund and partnerships between Duluth Public Arts Commission and City of Duluth Stormwater Division. Stay tuned for the storm drains on George Rogers Avenue.

DON'T GET TANKED

DEBUNKING SEPTIC SYSTEM MYTHS

Septic systems are a critical part of many homes in Duluth. Common misconceptions about septic systems have resulted in costly mistakes, health and environmental impacts, and maintenance headaches. Let's separate fact from fiction to keep your system in tip-top shape!

MYTH: Septic tanks don't need maintenance.

FACT: Septic systems should be inspected regularly to ensure they are physically intact and function properly. How often septic tanks need to be pumped out depends on the tank size and number of people in the home, but every three to five years is typical. Investing in regular maintenance today is a small price to pay compared to repairing or replacing entire systems!

MYTH: Anything can be flushed.

FACT: Your toilet is not a trash can! Bleach and other disinfectants can disturb the balance of bacteria that is needed to break down waste in the system. Other things like cooking grease, oils, and cat litter can cause blockages, backups, damaged pipes and even release toxins and other harmful contaminants into the environment.

MYTH: All "flushable" products are safe.

FACT: Wipes, hygiene products and even some toilet papers, can wreak havoc on your septic system! They simply don't break down quickly enough. Stick to toilet paper that's labeled SEPTIC SAFE and save yourself the headache.

Septic repairs, replacements and installations are permitted by the Gwinnett Environmental Health Department 770.963.5132 | www.gnrhealth.com

Georgia House Bill 581 took effect on January 1, 2025 which established a Floating Homestead Exemption option for property owners. As approved by voters in November 2024, it is designed to limit how much a homeowner’s homestead property tax bill increases when home values rise faster than inflation (measured by the Consumer Price Index or CPI). GET TO KNOW Janice Davis Canty

HELLO, MY NAME IS JANICE DAVIS CANTY.

I am from Sacramento, Ca. After traveling the world with the Air Force; we made Duluth our home in 1997. I am a Staff accountant, a certified group fitness instructor and a heath coach. I love physical activity and the outdoors….and ZUMBA!

While taking a break from my 40-year accounting career, I was a real estate agent and part-time coach at Curves. I met some very sweet ladies who encouraged me and unselfishly shared their wisdom. One day, they invited me to join them in a ZUMBA class. As they joked about being uncoordinated, I began to count out the steps to the merengue and salsa. We had a great time and they said I should be the instructor and thus my ZUMBA career began!

I have been teaching ZUMBA for 15 years and I love it! My class has become a sisterhood. It is not just a workout; it is a time of fellowship and encouragement. We laugh, dance and support each other through the trials of life, while staying focused on the path to good health. We also spend time hiking, running and celebrating each other’s accomplishments. When you join our class, you become a part of our ZUMBA Family, where our motto is Keep It Movin!

What really excites me is when my class learns a new routine after a 6-week session. I always feel a sense of accomplishment, but the smiles and the joy felt by everyone are always satisfying. We are all between the ages of 35 and 80, and we have learned to let our inner “Beyoncé” shine. When we are together at an event and a “ZUMBA” song is played…..Look out! We are the life of the party!!

The joy of knowing that I make a difference is what encourages me to keep going. Over the years, I have heard a lot of great testimonies like: ZUMBA is my Therapy, Nothing comes before my ZUMBA time, I am so thankful for finding my ZUMBA Family and ZUMBA is my Happy Hour! I have found that using this platform to celebrate birthdays, weddings, births and cancer survivors means so much and lets everyone know that they are special. Therefore, I have to keep moving because if I only encourage one person, it is worth it.

When I am not teaching, I work on my personal fitness goals. I enjoy running kickboxing and HIIT classes. I also spend a lot of time searching for new music and creating new routines for ZUMBA. I strive to keep my class fresh and exciting. Although most of my class have been with me for many years, some from the very beginning, I do not take it for granted that they will just keep coming back to the same routines.

I am very grateful for this opportunity to teach ZUMBA. It has definitely added meaning to my life.
