HISTORY GOLDEN DAHLONEGA AND ITS

“THERE’S GOLD IN THEM THAR HILLS!”

The popularized phrase shouted from the balcony of the old Lumpkin County courthouse, now the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site, is a testament to the region of Dahlonega. A city among mountains that once truly held gold. As the site of America’s first major gold rush in 1829, twenty years before gold was discovered in California, Dahlonega holds a permanent spot in gold history.

Dahlonega Federal Mint opens where Price Memorial Hall now stands on the UNG campus. Gold is discovered in California.

Dahlonega Mint closes. Over 6 million dollars in coins were minted here.
