WHAT'S THE SCOOP?

Hey, DiG Fam! This July/August, we’re diving into the ultimate showdown: Solo vs. Social. Whether you’re flying solo or rolling deep with your crew, we’ve got the guide to help you live your best life—your way. It’s all about balancing me time with we time, and trust us, both are worth celebrating.

Let’s kick things off with our City Spotlight is shining on Suwanee (pg. 14), where solo strolls and group hangs are equally magical. Discover the best bites, brews and boutiques—and don’t miss our interactive SculpTour Maze, where you can hunt down hidden items while exploring some of Gwinnett’s coolest public art.

Next up we have a little “me, myself and I” magic in Never Have I Ever Gone on a Solo Date (pg. 18). We’ve crafted the perfect itinerary for a solo day out—think coffee dates with yourself, gallery hopping and treating you to a fabulous dinner for one. No plus-one is needed for this adventure!

Feeling like a quick getaway? We’ve got just the thing. In Road Trip: Tiny House Camping (pg. 26), we’re heading to Suches, Georgia for an adventure that’s big on peace, quiet and charm.

But don’t worry social butterflies—we see you too. In 5 Within 50 (pg. 28), we’re rounding up the must-try social activities in the area, from rage rooms to pickleball courts and everything in between. Grab your besties and get ready to laugh, compete and make memories.

And for our wonderfully weird feature, Not the Norm (pg. 32), we’ve unearthed the strangest, quirkiest thrift store finds this side of the ‘burbs. Think: vintage records meet porcelain mermaid realness. So whether you're basking in solo serenity or living loud with your crew, this issue proves you don’t have to pick just one vibe. Solo vs. Social isn’t a battle—it’s a beautiful balance. From peaceful getaways to party-packed playdates, there’s a time and place for both.

Calling all lone wolves and social butterflies—let’s bridge solo escapes and squad goals, one epic moment at a time.

Have a favorite Gwinnett adventure—whether you're vibing solo or rolling deep with your crew? Show us what you’re up to! Snap a pic, tag us with #DigGwinnett and #WeDigIt, and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and TikTok @diggwinnett and Facebook at Dig Gwinnett for all the peaceful pauses and party-packed memories.

TASTE TEST: LOCAL FAVORITE FOOD FIESTA

Are you the type of person who orders an appetizer for the group when you go out to eat? Or maybe you’re someone who doesn't share your favorite dish because it’s just THAT GOOD? Us too! We asked the DiG team what their favorite local shareables (or not-soshareables) were and their suggestions were to drool for!

Lily: “First thing that comes to mind are the Korean Krack Fries from Tequila Mama in Suwanee - they are so flavorful (and ADDICTING)! The crispy fries with the creamy and tangy sauce combo are easy to share and leave my friends and me fighting over the last fry in the pile every time.” tequilamama.com

Mina: “My absolute favorite local dish is the Bacon Mac and Cheese from Local Republic in Lawrenceville! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. It’s perfectly cheesy, rich and has just the right amount of crispy bacon. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out.” localrepublic.com

Nicole: “Bourbon Brussels (brussels sprouts appetizer) with a Smokin' Old Fashioned at Parkside District in Lawrenceville. My go-to for a Friday happy hour — sit at the bar and indulge in sweet, crispy goodness while sipping on a smooth, spicy classic. It's pure luxury!” parksidedistrict.com

Emily: “BB’s Famous Fried Onion Rings at Bare Bones Steakhouse in Buford. The best starter to share with the table. Lightly battered to perfection, crispy and drizzled with sweet honey that will make you keep coming back for more!” barebonessteakhouse.com

Jay: “Mapo Tofu at Masterpiece in Duluth is my favorite dish on the planet. The eyewatering spice of the chili sauce soaks into the tofu, making it a perfect complement to the savory minced pork. Finished off with green onions and the signature tingling flavor of Sichuan peppercorns, each bite is an explosion of flavor.” masterpieceduluth.com

Sydney: “The Totchos from Strange Taco Bar. They make a great shareable, but if I'm being honest I usually get them as my meal so I get it all to myself! Who doesn't love tater tots + queso? Plus there are black beans and pico on there and those count as vegetables...right?” strangetacobar.com

Ashley: “My favorite dessert spot is Matcha Cafe Maiko in Duluth! My husband and I are obsessed with their Ube soft serve. Anytime we want a sweet treat and it’s late at night, we head over to grab a cone! I’ll sometimes get the taiyaki with red bean 4 pack which is a great shareable option.” matchacafe-maiko.com

TIPSY: PARTY PUNCH

When people hear the phrase “party punch,” they tend to not react fondly. Often, the mention of it causes people to flashback to college, where they would scoop up a cupful of some red liquid containing who knows what, chug the mystery mix and wake up with the worst headache ever. Despite this reputation, a party punch is an easy, delicious and fast solution to provide your friends with a tasty beverage without spending the entire evening making each guest their own cocktail.

Here’s a party punch recipe that you can make ahead of time and let your friends forget about their jungle juice woes!

Pomegranate Peach Party Punch (Makes 1.5 gallons, about 20 servings)

Ingredients:

• 24 oz Pomegranate Liqueur

• 12 oz Jamaican Rum

• 12 oz Peach Liqueur

• 12 oz Agave Syrup

• 96 oz Water

• 18 oz Fresh Lime Juice*

• 1 cup Peach slices*

• 1 cup Pomegranate seeds*

Instructions:

1. Combine all ingredients in a large beverage dispenser, stir and add ice.

2. Pour your punch into a glass with ice and garnish with a rosemary sprig.

3. Enjoy!

*NOTE: If preparing the punch in advance, do not add the lime juice, peach slices and pomegranate seeds until the day of your party and refrigerate the drink mixture. Then, on party day, add the remaining ingredients to your chilled punch mix, stir and add ice.

ARTS

GET A HOBBY: YOUR SEWING ERA AWAITS

If you’re a crafty person like me, you’re probably searching for a new hobby to start this summer. Besides your typical watercolor artwork or air-dry clay hobbies, finding one that challenges you yet is still attainable can be hard. That’s why you should take up sewing! I know, sewing is one of those hobbies that seem too daunting to start. It feels like unless you learned how to sew as a kid, you’ll never be able to get it as an adult. Plus, you need supplies like a sewing machine, which feels too much of a commitment, especially if you can’t figure out how to do it.

Before spiraling down a hole of questions, do yourself a favor and head over to Cool People Sew in Duluth! This gem of a shop offers classes and workshops so you can learn how to sew from the pros. They have a fully stocked inventory full of fabrics and supplies so all you have to worry about is reserving a spot in a workshop or class and get started on your sewing journey.

Get into your new hobby by going through their Sewing Basics, Beginner Series and Intermediate Series. These classes are designed to teach beginners everything they need to know to craft personal projects. Cool People Sew also offers an open studio for adults who are either pros or have completed one of their Beginner and Intermediate classes. Or, maybe it’s a random Friday night and you want to discover if you would like sewing and in that case, you can take one of their workshops! Once you’re in your sewing era, you can keep the projects flowing by stopping by their shop for fabrics, patterns or maybe one of their cute tees.

Make sure to check out the Stitching Atlanta: Sewing Shop Hop 2025 while you’re there! This fun initiative, led by String and Story, brings together fellow crafters through an interactive passport. As you visit each sewing shop location, you’ll have the chance to enter to win a Grand Door Prize. Each shop, like Cool People Sew, will offer three door prizes as well. You have from July 10 to July 26 to complete your passports, which can be downloaded from String and Story’s website!

NEVER HAVE I EVER: GONE ON A SOLO DATE

Confession time—I had never taken myself on a solo date. I mean, who does that, right? Turns out... everyone should. So, I gave it a go and let me tell you, it was the peaceful, introspective self-loving day I didn’t know I needed.

I kicked things off with a Caramel Iced Latte from Wise Coffee Company in Suwanee. Podcast in my ears, sunshine on my face and zero small talk required? Pure bliss. Sipping solo is a vibe.

Next up—activity time. Because what’s a self-date without a little self-care? I wandered into The Oil Bar at Sugarloaf Mills, and it was basically a personal spa playground. Lotions, scrubs, bath bombs—you name it. I opted to customize my own body oil. The scent options were endless—from designer dupes like Chanel to cozy basics like lavender.

My final mix? A dreamy blend of sugar, red berries, mandarin orange, vanilla, cocoa, soft spices, rose, tonka bean, amber, musk and woody notes. I walked out of there smelling like a five-star dessert.

Feeling like a walking fragrance ad, I wrapped up the day with a solo dinner at Raik Mediterranean in Suwanee Town Center. I started with a passionfruit margarita and some crispy falafel, followed by filet mignon kabobs over basmati rice, and ended with warm baklava served with vanilla ice cream. A literal feast for one. And then? I headed home with a full belly and a full heart.

Truth is, solo doesn’t mean sad. Solo is solitude. A chance to slow down, recharge and get to know yourself like you would someone you’re dating. Because let’s face it—you’re pretty great company. So book that solo date. You deserve it.

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: LIVING WELL FARMERS MARKET

400 Buford Hwy NE Suite 1102, Suwanee, GA 30024

It's summer 2010 – you’re turning up California Gurls on your iPod. Inception blew your mind. Kobe Bryant and the Lakers have just hoisted their 16th NBA Championship trophy. And Nora Lea has taken matters into her own hands.

Local Gwinnett mom Nora Lea, was trying to feed her family better but continued to feel frustrated with inconsistent quality and the exorbitant costs of organic produce in local supermarkets. Realizing there were others in her community trying to do the same, she created a co-op buying club in her Suwanee garage.

“When I originally started the co-op buying club, my goal was simple: I wanted to connect local families with clean, sustainably grown food they could trust,” said Nora. “The co-op allowed us to pool our orders to support small farms and producers directly, making nutrient-dense food more accessible and affordable. That mission of connection – between growers, makers and our community – has stayed at the heart of everything we do.”

After a few moves necessitated by growth, the co-op rebranded as Living Well Farmers Market and Nora opened her storefront in Suwanee Town Center in March 2020. This was a difficult time for the storefront to open but they were able to become a lifeline for the Suwanee community, staying stocked with fresh and organically grown food and offering curbside pickup and delivery options.

Nora shared, “It’s not just about nutrition, it’s about sustainability, fair labor, animal welfare and community resilience. Every dollar spent on thoughtfully grown food is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. It’s amazing the big difference a small community can make together!”

Living Well Farmers Market sells products that are antibiotic-and hormone-free with a priority towards natural and chemical-free cultivation. You also won’t find any MSG, nitrates or GMOs here. From fresh local produce and ginger shots to health products (like delicious date syrup to top your ice cream with) and skincare, you’ll find no shortage of quality products to choose from! “Food connects us to each other, to the earth, and to our health. When people know who grows their food and how it’s raised, it fosters a deeper sense of relationship, responsibility, and care,”

The Suwanee Town Center storefront is open Monday through Saturday and is open for anyone to shop at. You can also become a member to access a pre-order option. Unique from other co-ops and buying clubs, members can customize their boxes, simplifying weekly meals. A $25/month household fee allows members to order what they want, in the quantities that they want and from the farms that they want.

ME, MYSELF AND THE PARK

Got a few hours to kill alone? While great for loud, boisterous groups, the City of Suwanee’s parks also feature numerous solo spots that would even excite a die-hard extrovert.

BE INSPIRED

Recent studies suggest solitude spurs creative thinking and problem-solving, and history backs the theory up: Mozart was famous for his solo compositions. Isaac Newton developed his theories on calculus, motion and gravitation while in solitude due to a plague.

No matter which park you choose, creative inspiration abounds. Town Center Park, Town Center on Main and PlayTown Suwanee are home to the 24 pieces that make up the 8th SculpTour public art exhibit. And 11 more permanent pieces can be found at White Street, Sims Lake and Main Street parks.

Bring some paper and watercolors, a sketchbook and pencils or even some sidewalk chalk, and let your inner artist be inspired!

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Ever wanted to try something new, only to find yourself surrounded and completely intimidated by people who have already seemingly mastered the skill? No newbie wants to learn how to hit a serve next to Serena Williams. Stepping out of your comfort zone alone offers an opportunity to explore and discover while also building selfconfidence.

Teach yourself orienteering or how to play disc golf at Suwanee Creek Park. Work on your jump shot or your shredding skills at Main Street Park.

A QUIET PLACE

Grab your upcoming TBR with this list of the absolute best places to read in Suwanee. The Suwanee branch of the Gwinnett County library is an obvious choice but did you

know that Town Center on Main also features a reading grotto near the library’s front doors? White Street Park amenities include picnic tables at Harvest Farm and the orchard is the perfect place to bring a blanket and stretch out under the fruiting trees. At Sims Lake, across the water, next to the art piece that looks like a big yellow sun (Sunset by Gus & Lina Ocamposilva), sits a little bench near the water and far, far away from the busy playground.

DOWNTIME (LITERALLY)

Designate yourself the Official Suwanee Slide Tester. Compare and contrast the slides at Sims Lake, Station Park, PlayTown and – our personal favorite – White Street at the orchard. (Betcha didn’t know about the super secret orchard slide which is The Fastest Slide in Suwanee).

RUN FREE

Indulge in the ultimate solo sport (running) at Martin Farm Park which provides parking and access to the approximately five-mile Suwanee Creek Greenway. The hard surface trail runs through woods and wetlands, providing plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and connecting 400 acres of parkland. Martin Farm Park also features critical runner accouterments: bathrooms and a water fountain.

QUIET REFLECTION

Take a moment to reflect on historical moments and sacrifices. In a quiet area of Town Center Park, there’s a Remembrance piece by artist Marc Moulton that includes a twisted relic from one of the World Trade Center towers as well as a piece of commissioned art featuring a September 11 timeline. An evening visit is especially poignant, as a lightshadow impression projects an aerial view of the Manhattan skyline onto the concrete.

Town Center Park is also home to a piece of the Berlin Wall. The side that faced West Germany is full of bright, colorful art depicting citizens’ love of freedom and hope for their countrymen trapped on the other side.

NORM'S TUNES

For our new edition of Norm’s Tunes, he’s spotlighting the debut album Moment of Truth by the Red Clay Strays. You can find this vinyl and others at nx vinyl over in Downtown Norcross! This album is a great example of collaboration, storytelling and self-reflection. It’s the best mix of spending time alone to collect your thoughts and coming together with your group to share everyone's collective story, memories and experiences. Give this terrific album a listen and stop by nx vinyl to snag your own copy!

ROAD TRIP TINY HOUSE CAMPING: A SOLO SUCHES ADVENTURE

If you’re anything like us at The DiG, your social media feed is overflowing with dreamy travel posts - including ones beckoning you to escape to a tiny cabin in the woods. We're all about those picture-perfect, cozy escapes but let's be real, while we appreciate the idea of roughing it, we’d much rather be glamping than actually camping. Give us a real bed, a flushing toilet and a tiny kitchen over a tent any day. We all know hotels are great options, but the rise of Airbnbs and unique stays clearly shows us that people are looking for experiences, not just a place to lay their heads. The tiny house movement is a breath of fresh air, proving that less truly can be more. For a tiny house camping experience that’s big on charm and even bigger on adventure, we’re headed to Suches, GA - the undisputed “Valley Above the Clouds.”

A North Georgia hidden gem, Suches is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Known for its stunning mountain views and proximity to an abundance of hiking trails, waterfalls and finishing sports, it’s the ideal escape for those looking to reconnect with nature without completely roughing it. Tiny houses maximize every square inch to provide all the comforts of home (often with surprisingly luxurious touches) in a cozy, intimate package.

Imagine spending your weekend exploring nearby Vogel State Park, hiking portions of the Appalachian Trail, tubing on the Toccoa River and

visiting nearby wineries in Dahlonega. Be sure to add Sea Creek Falls to your itinerary, only a half-mile hike to a 30-ft waterfall. If you’re looking for a more moderate hike, Preachers Rock is a two-mile hike to breathtaking peak views. Pro Tip: Download the app AllTrails if you haven’t already - no need to thank us later, we aren’t gatekeeping any travel tips here.

Not into hiking? No problem. There’s Lake Winfield Scott which has year-round access to picnicking, boating and swimming. Whatever level of adventure you prefer is available in Suches. Then, as the evening creeps in, you return to your cozy tiny home, fire up the grill and enjoy a meal surrounded by the sounds of nature. The beauty of tiny house camping is that it allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings while still having a comfortable, secure base to retreat to. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and creature comforts.

If you’re looking for a fun solo adventure to clear your head, tiny house camping in Suches offers an unforgettable experience. It's an invitation to declutter your mind, embrace a simpler way of living, and discover the big joys that can be found in a tiny space, all while soaking in the majestic beauty of Northeast Georgia.

THE PAINTED PICKLE

279 Ottley Dr NE, Atlanta

Best for: Group hangs, date nights, pickleball pros and newbies

Think upscale bar meets high-energy playground. The Painted Pickle is a selfdescribed "compeatery," and once you step inside, you’ll see why. Yes, there’s pickleball—but also ping pong, shuffleboard, darts, arcade-style games and more–they’ve turned the entire place into a gaming experience. I went to Cosmic Pickle (their nighttime, neon-lit pickleball experience), and between the pickleball, live music and top-tier food and cocktails, it was an unforgettable night.

YOUR 3RD SPOT

400 Chattahoochee Row NW, Atlanta

K1 SPEED

1625 Pleasant Hill Rd Suite 230, Duluth

Best for: Adrenaline junkies, racers at heart and competitive crews

If you’ve got the need for speed, K1 Speed in Duluth delivers. This indoor racing center features high-performance, all-electric go-karts that zip around a professionally designed track—and the experience is more than just a few laps. Choose from racing options like Arrive & Drive (perfect for walk-ins who want to challenge friends or set a personal best), Grand Prix-style formats, and even headto-head racing leagues for more serious competitors. Each race is fully timed, so bragging rights are definitely on the line.

PLAYFUL PLACES

We’ve been on the hunt for social spots that go beyond the typical dinner and a movie vibe and bring people together through play, energy and maybe even a little friendly competition. Whether it’s smashing glassware in a rage room, playing neon pickleball while sipping craft cocktails or creating a masterpiece with splatter paint, these places create unforgettable moments.

SPIN ART NATION

22 Park Pl SE, Atlanta

REKT RAGE ROOM

265 Temple Ave, Newnan

Best for: Blowing off steam, group therapy (without the therapy) and letting loose Ever wanted to smash a printer or TV? Write your ex's name on a plate and then shatter it into a million pieces? This is your moment. At REKT, you can safely shatter plates, TVs, glass bottles, and more in a cathartic release of all life’s chaos. It’s surprisingly therapeutic and insanely fun.

Best for: Artsy nights out, birthday parties and date nights with a twist

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably seen a video of spin art and saved it while thinking to yourself, “Oooh I’d love to go here.” What’s super cool about spin art is that the experience is completely up to you–choose your package and then you can paint however you would like whether that’s squeezing it from a bottle, splattering it with a brush or simply sending paint flying to see how it lands. Note: It may seem self-explanatory, but while their coveralls do a good job of protecting clothes, wear something you wouldn’t mind getting a little paint on.

DAY TRIP ROCK CLIMBING AT MOUNT YONAH

This one is for all of our DiG adventurers looking for a fun and unique day trip experience! Whether you’re an avid rock climber or just a newbie, heading to Mount Yonah with your friends is always a blast. Located in the mountain town of Cleveland which is just under two hours from Gwinnett, this is a popular spot for hiking, climbing, bouldering and camping.

When preparing for your rock climbing journey, it’s important to pack the essentials. While I’ve accompanied my friends to Mount Yonah, I mostly stick to indoor climbing at Central Rock Gym, so I’ll turn it over to the experts themselves! Below is a list of essentials you should pack according to climber Paul who is our resident Mount Yonah expert. He shared that, “it’s one of the premier outdoor climbing spots in the state of Georgia, and a must-see for any hiking or climber enthusiast.”

Rock Climbing Essentials:

• Pack a lunch for the day with plenty of water (around 3 L to be safe)

• A sling with a carabiner

• A harness

• A helmet

• Plenty of rope

• Chalk bag

Once you get to the trailhead parking lot (the entrance will sneak up on you so drive slowly) and park, you’ll notice boulder routes along the trail that you’ll take to the

halfway point (referred to as the meadow). Just past the meadow, you’ll find yourself at the lowers which is a smaller foot trail. You’ll know you’ve made it when you see the craggy cliff and makeshift stone chairs along the bottom. While you can climb the main face which is the signature feature of Mount Yonah seen from the highway, climber Paul recommends only lead climbers with technical experience should attempt it as it’s currently on his bucket list to attempt one day.

Each of the routes on the lowers varies in difficulty so finding one that matches your skill level is crucial. Local climber Elena shared that they’re around a 5.8-5.9 difficulty on the climbing scale but some do reach 5.14. You can either lead climb where you clip yourself to the anchor points along the way or top rope with a pre-set anchor. There’s a foot trail on the left-hand side of the cliff where the top anchor points are located that you can set up before climbing. No matter how you choose to climb, Elena shared that Mount Yonah is a ton of fun and perfect for climbers who are climbing outside of a gym for the first time.

After spending a couple of hours climbing, enjoying the beautiful weather outside and eating lunch, it’s time to pack up and head out! If your group plans on cutting it close to when the sun sets, make sure to bring lanterns so you can easily hike back to the trailhead. As you head back to Gwinnett, stop by Mountain Fresh Creamery (open daily until 6:00 p.m.) for a scoop of homemade ice cream to end your perfect mountain climbing experience.

THRIFTING GWINNETT

Gwinnett is a community full of unique experiences. Many of these gems of the county are permanent fixtures, like the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Lilburn, Chateau Elan in Braselton or the Mall of Georgia in Buford. These places help define our community, but what if you wanted to take a piece of Gwinnett home with you? To find the answer to this question, my research team and I got to digging for iconic finds in the most unlikely of museums: thrift stores.

When the team reconvened after our hunt for the most unique thrift store finds in Gwinnett, we were all surprised at the variety of items we had brought together from across the county. Several were unique decorative pieces, like a cat statue with a thousand-yard stare and a fedora with a built-in wig. Others were relics of a bygone era, such as a VHS camera covered in dust and a high school hymn collection captured on a vinyl record.

However, our team decided that the most iconic of our thrift store finds were the creative containers: personality-filled places for storing your stuff. This group had some heavy hitters: a metal tin made to look like a tub of cream cheese (complete with cream cheese recipe cards inside), a ceramic dish sculpted to look like it was made of corn, and my personal favorite: a wine chicken. This bottle holder was made to look like a chicken, lying down and chugging the wine bottle resting in its beak.

With our research complete, it's safe to say that Gwinnett’s thrift stores have just as much vibrant personality as the rest of our community. Get out there and dig because who knows what you might find!
