THE DINING SCENE
FROM THE BEGINNING, FOOD HAS BEEN A FOCUS FOR
THE SANDY SPRINGS PERIMETER
CHAMBER. With cooperation from the City of Sandy Springs and Visit Sandy Springs, which is the city’s official destination marketing organization, the dining scene has become a model of economic growth.
"Restaurants are where it's at,” said Adam Forrand, president and CEO of the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber. “We're trying to attract more restaurants. We're trying to grow restaurants, scale them, and to inspire brands looking for the next concept while they build their concept in our community."
BECOMING A DINING DESTINATION
The story of Sandy Springs’ flourishing restaurant scene began a decade ago with a grassroots effort by Mayor Rusty Paul and then-chamber president Tom Mahaffey. At the time, there were a few great restaurants in town, but the general public didn’t view Sandy Springs as a dining destination. “The problem was that if you wanted to go out for a special occasion, you went to Canton Street in Roswell, or Buckhead, or Dunwoody,” Paul said. ”A lot of restaurateurs would not come to Sandy Springs, because they did not feel like they would get the support of Sandy Springs residents.” And why was that important? Restaurants are a key building block of a strong local economy, according to Jennifer Cruce, executive director of Visit Sandy Springs. "That's because you can't get people to stay in a community that doesn't have good dining options," Cruce said.
Mayor Paul and Mahaffey brought together local restaurant owners and created the Restaurant Council, a committee of the chamber. Using social media, cross-promotion, and promotional events like Restaurant Week, the council sent a clear message to residents: If you want more restaurants, come out and support the ones that are already here. It worked. “It was like somebody flipped a switch. Once we proved that we would support our local restaurants, a lot of other restaurateurs came in,” Paul said. "All of a sudden, we were having an influx of great restaurants and eateries."
Over the next few years, Sandy Springs saw tremendous growth in its restaurant scene. Even during the pandemic, the community rallied around its newfound dining destination with a flood of takeout orders, keeping restaurants afloat during hard times. Creating that connection between residents and restaurants has paid off in a big way for the city. "Today, I think our restaurant scene is as good as anywhere in the Atlanta area," Paul said.
SUSTAINING GROWTH
Now that there are over 300 restaurants in Sandy Springs, the focus is on sustaining those businesses and meeting demand from others looking to locate in the city. The Restaurant Council meets regularly to share best practices, solve problems, and continue the momentum. The chamber, Visit Sandy Springs and the City of Sandy Springs continue to host events and lead initiatives that drive interest. Food that Rocks was founded in 2016 with the help of Taste of Atlanta founder Dale DeSena, who happens to be a Sandy Springs resident. The annual ticketed event on City Green not only draws attention to 40-plus local eateries; it also benefits local charity organizations. Learn more at foodthatrocks.org.
In 2023, Visit Sandy Springs launched the “Dine Like a Local Program” in collaboration with the City of Sandy Springs Economic Development Department. Using this free digital passport program, participating diners earn points by checking in at featured restaurants. They can use the points to enter giveaways for prizes. The results of the three-month campaign were impressive. The Dine Like a Local landing page at VisitSandySprings.com received 350% more traffic than any other page on the website. Over 1,100 people signed up for the program. Visit Sandy Springs has launched its 2024 campaign, Cruce said.
Mayor Paul said that plans are under way for five to seven new chef-driven restaurants in City Springs, which is the mixed-use development at the heart of Sandy Springs. Currently, there is not enough available space to meet demand from restaurateurs, so the city is developing the two blocks south of the City Springs complex. "It's a really growing and dynamic restaurant scene in Sandy Springs," Paul said.

Fire and Police
HEADQUARTERS IN SANDY SPRINGS
Growth in Sandy Springs is trending upward, and with growth, the city wants to ensure its community is a safe place for residents to live, work, and play. Sandy Springs believes safety is paramount and is placing their focus and commitment on putting safeguards in place with emergency response and public safety upgrades. The City of Sandy Springs is accomplishing this with the unveiling of the new police and fire station headquarters in 2024. With the construction of a modern police and municipal courthouse headquarters as well as the construction of the new fire station, Sandy Springs is positioning itself with the ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies for all city residents.
As the population grows, fire stations need to be built to meet the needs of the community. Fire Station #5 is about 10,912 square feet and is a 2-story building slated to open in the
summer of 2024. The area where Fire Station #5 is located, is currently being served by two other stations. The addition of this new station will offer relief to those stations while offering a stronger sense of security for residents. Fire Station #5 is located on Mount Vernon Road and aims to keep the residential aesthetics in mind. The fire station has been designed in a manner that fuses with the surrounding architecture while offering the most responsive services. Every second counts when there is a fire, and this new station is a state-of-the-art facility. Areas to wash and store fire fighting equipment and gear as well as decontamination showers, were explicitly incorporated in this design. Overall, the fire station has been designed to not only protect and store the fire vehicles allowing them to be deployed quickly, but it will have adequate storage capacity to maintain the latest fire equipment and gear to protect the health and safety of all firefighting personnel.
The Police Headquarters and Municipal Courthouse will open in the winter of 2024 and is located on 7.42 acres on Morgan Falls Road. With this large parcel of land, there is space for future development which is projected to include an additional fire station as well as a firearms training facility and overflow parking lot. The design of this facility included the Georgia Peach Green Building Rating System, which helps to optimize and conserve energy, utilizes materials produced in the state of Georgia, reduces water use, and improves Georgia’s environmental quality. This project began with an existing structure, which is going through a significant renovation. A courthouse, a new lobby, and Sally Port, which help to provide a secure entry to the building are new construction additions. Once complete, the
police headquarters will be 110,763 square feet and the courthouse will be 11,295 square feet. Also included in this design is a plaza area and courtyard, where visitors can take in fresh air within a spacious and calming environment.
With the high growth rate of the population in the State of Georgia, Sandy Springs is an attractive location due to its proximity to Atlanta. Sandy Springs is taking a proactive approach to fostering a secure and resilient community by putting plans in place to not only support the current growth but future growth as well. The introduction of a cuttingedge police and fire station headquarters is a testament to the city’s resolve to prioritize safety as a fundamental pillar of community development and prosperity.

HEALTHCARE
Kaiser Permanente
A GUIDEPOST FOR MODERN, ACCESSIBLE HEALTHCARE
Kaiser Permanente uniquely approaches accessible, exceptional healthcare, giving patients autonomy, choice and personalized care through their multispecialty practices. Savvy patients across the state desire affordable care plans that provide access to primary care, specialists, clinical trials, cutting-edge treatments for complex conditions and a patient-oriented experience.
COMMITMENT TO THE EXCELLENCE
Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to providing the highest quality care to every patient begins with a selective hiring process that includes recruiting medical professionals from top schools and at the top of their fields and only allows for one in ten applicants to move on to become Kaiser Permanente physicians. According to the not-for-profit health plan and provider network, Kaiser Permanente is in the nation's top 1% of health plans, employing doctors who are regularly recognized as “Top Doctors” by local publications such as Atlanta Magazine.
These rigorous hiring practices allow Kaiser Permanente to surround patients with some of the brightest minds in medicine. Their doctors and specialists are at the forefront of research and treatment for complex cases of disease, including cancer and matters of the heart. They have the expertise to deliver care personalized to all members.
CONNECTED CARE
Kaiser Permanente members can be assured that all of their records are shared among their physicians via the most extensive commercial electronic health records system in the country. This ensures seamless connectivity between patients and their providers while eliminating needless wait times and confusion, allowing patients to get the care they need quickly and efficiently. The Kaiser Permanente app equips patients with the tools they need to be engaged and active stakeholders in their care by accessing their records, scheduling appointments and communicating with their care team members.
The connected care available through Kaiser Permanente also encourages patients to choose who their providers are. The relationship between patient and provider is highly personal and impacts all areas of the care received. The option to change doctors within the Kaiser Permanente system at any
time allows each patient the autonomy to find the right doctor for their needs while choosing from an expansive roster of vetted providers and specialists. The ability to decide how and when to access care is also available, extending to virtual visits online or by phone, urgent care facilities, mental health and wellness options, specialty care and health care while traveling.
ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE CARE PLANS
With Kaiser Permanente’s coordinated, team-based model, they can provide the proper care at the right time, which helps reduce unnecessary treatments and improves patient engagement. This leads to lower costs, as well as better population health outcomes. This approach is a key reason why they can bring high-quality, affordable care to more than 317,000 members in Georgia. Members receive timely preventive care with vaccinations and health screenings to help avoid or minimize costly chronic conditions and treatments.
LEADING CANCER CARE
At Kaiser Permanente, an integrated team carefully and compassionately reviews each unique cancer case. This team includes surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists and other specialists.
Together, these specialists review, assess and develop treatment options based on the member’s needs. This team-based approach also reduces the stress of unnecessary appointments and helps put our patients on the road to a speedy recovery.
Kaiser Permanente offers a suite of highly specialized services, giving members complete access to all cancer treatment types, including breast cancer, lung cancer, GI cancers, gynecologic cancers and multiple myelomas.
As cancer treatments become more sophisticated, Kaiser’s oncologists, hematologists and surgeons continually evaluate and adopt the latest diagnostic technologies and treatment services. In 2021, they expanded the Kaiser Permanente women’s cancer program to treat cancers of the female reproductive system, including
ovarian, uterine and cervical cancer, with a gynecologic oncologist team. This specialty is often challenging to find across the country.
CARDIAC CARE
Kaiser Permanente is known for awardwinning programs for heart failure treatments, including heart failure multidisciplinary clinics. Heart failure can be complex, touching many other aspects of a person’s well-being. Living with heart failure means a person’s heart muscle doesn’t pump as much blood as their body needs. Failure doesn’t mean the heart has stopped; it means the heart is not pumping as well as it should. At Kaiser Permanente, we have award-winning programs for our heart failure treatments.
Kaiser aims to bring members and their care team together to discuss the best way to get them on track in all aspects of their treatment, not limited to the exam room. A Kaiser Permanente care team may include a cardiologist, dietician, pharmacist, and social worker in one appointment.
In 2020, Kaiser started the Virtual Cardiac Rehabilitation program to monitor the patient’s heart from the comfort of their own home via a Samsung Galaxy smartwatch. Since the program began, 413 members have graduated, meaning these members were less likely to be re-admitted to the hospital, proving that connected care truly impacts positive outcomes.

Groundbreaking Cancer Treatments AT NORTHSIDE HOSPITAL
A new MRI-guided linear accelerator at Northside Hospital allows doctors to see, track and treat soft tissue and tumors in real-time.
The technology is the world’s first radiation therapy system that combines high-strength magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a linear accelerator to target and track the position and shape of a patient’s tumor while radiation is delivered in real-time. This allows for enhanced precision and accuracy compared to conventional radiation therapy.
Northside is the first health system in Georgia to offer this groundbreaking cancer treatment option, which is available at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology – Atlanta in Sandy Springs.
"As a leader in cancer care in Georgia, we are excited to add the MRIdian system to our treatment services for cancer patients as part of our dedication to advance the practice of radiation therapy, improve outcomes and lower toxicity," said Dr. Ajaykumar Patel, radiation oncologist at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute.
MRI-guided radiation therapy can treat several types of cancer, including breast, prostate, pancreatic, liver, lung and other cancers.
Another new program at Northside provides specialized care for individuals at increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Specialists at the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute High-Risk Program work with patients to formulate a personal care plan for proper cancer screening, risk management and ongoing surveillance.
Patients referred to the program may be seen at the High-Risk Clinic, located on the Northside Hospital Atlanta campus, where consultations with a specially trained nurse practitioner under the supervision of the clinic’s medical director, Dr. Iqbal Garcha.
“The goal of this program is to extend survival and improve the quality of life and level of anxiety of individuals with a high risk for cancer by virtue of proper surveillance, early detection and prompt treatment,” said Kiana Ohlson, MSN, FNP-C, the program’s clinical coordinator.
“I am very excited to be able to offer this service to our community,” added Dr. Garcha. “Patients at high risk for developing breast cancer have been underserved by the medical community for some time. We feel that in order to properly evaluate their risk, give them evidence-based options for reducing this risk, as well as coordinating their follow-up care, a dedicated program is essential.”

The Changing Face
OF EDUCATION IN FULTON COUNTY
While “reading, writing, and arithmetic” continue to provide a solid foundation for K-12 education in the U.S., education is evolving rapidly to deliver a more robust and impactful experience for students. Technology represents only one aspect of that evolution. Up-and-coming programs – like CTAE Pathways and International Baccalaureate – enrich the classroom, engage the students, and put young learners on a solid path to their futures. A growing number of Fulton County schools are embracing this programming and are already witnessing signs of success.
ISON SPRINGS ES LAUNCHES PILOT CTAE PATHWAYS PROGRAM
What was once known as “vocational education” has been supercharged to become Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE). It integrates “core academic knowledge with technical and occupational skills to prepare students for post-secondary education and the workforce.” The more than 130 career “pathways” it represents run the gamut from Agribusiness Management to Travel Marketing and Lodging Management to Veterinary Sciences.
Designed to close the skills gap in Georgia, the vision for CTAE is to “provide educational experiences of superior quality and value for students that drive economic prosperity for all.” The fact that 96.7% of CTAE concentrators graduated within the fouryear cohort graduation rate in Georgia demonstrates its success at the high school level. Tens of thousands of those graduates had earned postsecondary credentials before they had their high school diplomas in hand.
For some insight into the program at the elementary school level, we look to educator Kyla Rogers at Ison Springs ES, who is leading the CTAE charge with her students. Hers is one of four Fulton County elementary schools piloting the program.
“In elementary school, they gain familiarity with the four overarching pathwaysengineering, computer science, agriculture, and entrepreneurship,” explained Rogers. “By middle school, they can select a pathway that resonates best with them and follow it through high school.”
After launching in August 2023, Ison Springs students have explored two of four units to date – including the different types of careers under each pathway. For example, during the engineering units, fifth-grade students learned about aerospace engineering by creating a water rocket – which involved designing the rocket, determining materials needed, executing the design, and testing their designs. For the computer science unit, second through fifth-grade students learned
about coding and programming through LEGO Education SPIKE. Using LEGOs, they built a self-driving taxi and programmed it to get from point A to point B using coding.
“The kids are loving it – to see the engagement just warms my heart,” said Rogers. “Everybody is engaged 100%. All teachers have struggled with keeping students on task and enjoying the work. With this program, they learn so many things without even realizing it. An added benefit is that it gives them the guidance and skills they need. It’s big on promoting problemsolving and collaboration. After all, teamwork prepares them for the real world. At the beginning of the year, I had students create a poster of what they hoped to be when they grow up. Many indicated jobs like teacher, police officer, nurse, and doctor. Now that they’ve been exposed to so many different careers, this program is broadening their scope. They will do another career poster at the end of the year, and I can’t wait to see what careers they choose. I hope the CTAE program sticks around for a long time. It is needed at every elementary school.”
THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM SPANS ELEMENTARY TO HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION IN FULTON COUNTY
Taught in 143 countries worldwide, The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program has long been considered a respected high school
offering that prepares students for success at the university level and as a global citizen. However, it is also available to children as young as three years old as it endeavors to foster a lifelong learning journey. According to the International Baccalaureate Organization, the program “empowers school-aged students to take ownership in their own learning and help them develop future-ready skills to make a difference and thrive in a world that changes fast.” For a behind-the-scenes peek into what the IB program looks like at both the elementary school and high school levels in Fulton County, we turn to the educators at High Point ES and Riverwood HS.
High Point was designated an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) World School in 2018. Today, every student who attends the school is part of the program. High Point’s IB Coordinator, Riana Kidder, shared, “At the elementary school level, being an IB school means that our collective goal of education is not just to teach students the academic standards, but to teach them to use what they learn to make their community and their world a better place. As a PYP school, there are several components of IB that we focus on to help us with this mission. Our teachers plan and focus on teaching through transdisciplinary units that include as many hands-on learning
experiences as possible. Students are given the chance to learn new concepts through exploration and discovery, with the teacher acting as a facilitator of the learning.”
With Global Mindedness as a key program component, High Point kindergarteners took part in a unit about how “Individuals Impact Community.” When learning about wants and needs and their role in the community, students developed a project to collect Teddy Bears for children in the local Children’s hospital. The kindergarteners made posters using their writing skills, spread the word to other classes using their language skills, and then counted the Teddy Bears at the end using their math skills. Ultimately, they were able to see that you are never too small to make a big difference and that they can have an impact on others in their community.
The school also hosts a Market Day – where third graders gain experience as both producers and consumers when learning the basic principles of economics. High Point’s International Night celebrates its diverse school community and its students’ rich cultures. Each month, classrooms focus on one of ten character traits of the Learner Profile. Students learn, practice, and are encouraged to exemplify each character trait in order for their learning in school to extend beyond academics. At the end of the month, each teacher selects one student who served as a great example of that learner profile attribute to celebrate at an award ceremony.
“Ultimately, as a PYP school, we all operate under the shared belief that each of us has a responsibility to use our skills, passions, and talents to make the world and our community a better place,” added Kidder. “The way that we can make the biggest impact is to instill the same belief in each of our scholars.”
Riverwood High School principal Kindra Smith agrees and with good reason. Her school’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is the largest in Georgia. Riverwood graduated its first IB Diploma class in 2002. Over the last five years alone, the program's growth has witnessed an expansion from 44 program graduates to an anticipated 79 graduates in 2024. Representing the Class of 2026, over 100 current sophomores have elected to join the two-year IB Diploma Program, which starts their junior year.
“IB teaches kids how to think for themselves and builds their capacity to do so in critical, creative, and compassionate ways,” said Smith. “Riverwood’s program allows more flexibility than most in how students can participate. Students can take anywhere from one course to a full load of IB or can mix and match IB with AP and/or dual enrollment courses.”
One particular point of pride for the Riverwood leadership team is their students’ involvement in CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) Projects with local elementary schools and a school halfway around the world. Riverwood students have partnered with Lake Forest Elementary for Garden Lessons and with Heards Ferry Elementary for reading and fifth-grade mentorship. As a beautiful example of what it means to be a global citizen, they have also participated in fundraising efforts to support school sports at Diamond School of Arusha, which provides primary and secondary education to students aged 3 to 14 in Tanzania.

CIVIC ROUND TABLE
WITH A HISTORY DATING
BACK to when Sandy Springs was still an unincorporated town, this team of passionate residents known as the Sandy Springs Civic Round Table (SSCRT) boasts deep roots and an even deeper impact on the community. Out of a shared love for their community, a small group of citizens has created significant change in the Sandy Springs community over the subsequent years.
Several concerned citizens began meeting in the late 80s, initially in conjunction with Sandy Springs Revitalization, to facilitate communications between residents, businesses and civic organizations working together to answer the question: “How can we improve our community right now?” These
conversations led to a combined focus on Green Space in Sandy Springs and the establishment of the Sandy Springs Conservancy, a vital non-profit organization still making a difference today. SSCRT and the Conservancy proudly worked alongside Fulton County to establish plans for parks such as the wellknown Morgan Falls Overlook Park.
This group of Civic leaders comprised of educators, business owners and concerned citizens continued to meet and identify opportunities for further partnerships and provide a forum for local organizations to solve problems and collaborate.
After a few years of general meetings, SSCRT evolved into a formal organization comprising non-profit
Executive Directors and Presidents of civic service organizations meeting specified criteria that serve the Sandy Springs Community. In 2013, the Sandy Springs Civic Round Table became an official program of Leadership Sandy Springs. With its commitment to increasing volunteerism in the community and giving a voice to engaged citizens, the Round Table continued to offer opportunities for member organizations to learn, combine efforts, share ideas and work together.
Meetings now occur monthly and often include a guest speaker to educate attendees on common interest topics. Leaders utilize this time to discuss future needs and current concerns for their organizations, brainstorm solutions
Purpose and Vision
• Share objectives, activities and events of the individual member organizations and promote collaboration of all Sandy Springs non-profits
• Communicate and encourage the development of new opportunities and strategies
• Provide information and help develop leaders in our non-profit sector
• Pursue major grant opportunities for relevant services and resources from outside our community
and strategize ways to increase Civic engagement in the Sandy Springs area.
“Our members often refer volunteers and funders to other member organizations where their focus would be a more appropriate fit and work jointly on programs,” Carolyn Axt, head of the Steering Committee, remarks.
The Round Table has held training for Board members from all member organizations with the Fanning Institute of UGA and other workshops addressing topics of mutual benefit and great importance to our non-profits. SSCRT also annually supports the Leadership Perimeter's “Volunteer For a Better Sandy Springs" event.
Some of the most important events of the year for the SSCRT are the bi-annual Non-profit Engagement Days at the Sandy Springs’s Farmers Market. Non-profit organizations host booths and engage with their neighbors to educate them on their missions and recruit essential volunteers. These well-attended events are an effective way for members to get face-to-face with caring citizens who may share a common passion, spreading the word about opportunities to get involved and areas of greatest need.
Foundations and other benefactors today are increasingly seeking organizations that work collaboratively to increase their impact.Irene Schweiger, head of Sandy Springs Education Force
“Non-profit days are a great way to increase visibility for our organization, talk to potential volunteers, and have conversations with community members in a positive and pleasant setting,” says Ryder Leary, Executive Director of Keep North Fulton Beautiful. “It's also an opportunity to spend a little more time with our nonprofit colleagues—and could possibly be the incubator for some amazing collaborations!”
With steadfast dedication, the Sandy Springs Civic Round Table continues to build a stronger community by equipping its members and other citizens with tools, knowledge and support.
PLACES OF WORSHIP
The diversity of the Sandy Springs community lends itself to a robust network of churches, temples, nondenominational places of worship and other faith organizations. These exceptional offerings leave citizens and visitors feeling welcomed and at home in our community.
