Can you share a top Athens memory?
It would have to be booking Nirvana in 1991 because I knew they were going to break and we got them before they broke. We caught them right at the moment, and it was also the start of my career for booking all these years.

TALENT BUYER FOR 40 WATT CLUB
No one knows the music scene better than local Velena Vego, who came to Athens in the early 80s with her sister and their girl band. After visiting the 40 Watt Club and asking for a job there, answering the phones, Velena has made a name for herself as a top talent buyer. She’s booked over 6,000 shows from popular names like Nirvana and R.E.M. to John Mayer and indie artists, putting Athens on the global map. Music is her passion, especially in a magical place like Athens.
What is the best hidden gem in Athens?
I love Maepole, it’s so good and fast, and I think it’s unique because they’re an independent restaurant.
Which local event is your favorite?
Probably the Cracker 4 Day Fan Festival that’s held in March. You get these die-hard “crumbs” as they’re called, and I get to pick the bands that open my husband’s rock band, known as Cracker. This event also brings in so many touring acts from out of town for these shows.

IAthens has long been known for its live music scene, making a number of “Best of” lists for our music, including “Best Cities for Music Lovers” by Vio.com. From premier venues and spaces that have made a name for themselves to classic theatres and more, Athens has it all.
At The Classic Center Theatre, you can catch the latest Broadway show or performance by headline musicians or comedians. This
2090-seat theatre has been a hub for live entertainment and offers assisted listening devices, sensory bags, quiet rooms and accessible seating so that all guests can enjoy their listening experience!
Another grand venue with a capacity to fit up to 8,500 people is the Akins Ford Arena. You can hear Grammy award-winning artists and check out the Georgia Music Collections at this state-of-the-art arena.

Located in the heart of Athens, GA, the Georgia Music Collections from the University of Georgia Libraries represents key players in music history across genres, from the beginnings of Soul and R&B in Macon and Augusta to the birth of alternative rock and new wave in Athens and the rise of southern Hip-Hop in Atlanta. Explore the collections when you attend an event at Athens, GA’s newest venue, Akins Ford Arena.

INTERACTIVE DISPLAYS | MUSEUM QUALITY EXHIBITS AND MORE!

For music aficionados interested in experiencing a piece of music his tory, check out the 40 Watt Club. What started as a rehearsal space in 1979 for the iconic band Pylon quickly transformed into a nightclub seeing legends including Nirvana and R.E.M. perform. Today, you can catch a live performance on almost any day of the week from local and national bands.

A journey through Athens’ music history wouldn’t be complete without exploring local theatres that are still thriving today! The Georgia Theatre was originally built as the Elite Theatre in 1935 and has since grown into a beloved live music venue. Another great spot to catch a live performance is at The Foundry, a venue located in the oldest building at the Hotel Abacus site.
An additional beloved historic institution is the Morton Theatre. First opening its doors in 1910, it’s one of the only surviving vaudeville
owned and operated by an African American Athens local named Monroe Bowers “Pink” Morton. Greats from Duke Ellington to R.E.M. have graced this stage.
Do yourself a favor and take a walk along the Athens Music Walk of Fame to complete your music adventure! This two-square block outdoor attraction will take you by a few of the iconic music venues that helped cultivate an atmosphere where music is explored, cherished and preserved.

Spend the day browsing through vinyls and other music must-haves at these top Athens’ music shops. Starting with Wuxtry Records, this independent record shop opened its doors in 1976 and was recognized by the Rolling Stones. Another great record spot is Lo Yo Yo Stuff Records, selling everything from LPs, CDs, cassette tapes, band memorabilia and more.
For some retro finds, head over to The Record Booth, offering a selection of vintage vinyl, turntables and more. It’s located inside Lexington Vintage, a quirky antique shop.

LISTEN TO MICHAEL’S EPISODE OF ATHENS OFF THE RECORD PODCAST

Can you share a top Athens memory?
I’m going to claim the Pylons’ “last show” that we played at The Mad Hatter Club. We ended up turning it into a live album and listening back, I’m reminded of how fun of a show it was to play.

PUBLIC RELATIONS FOR THE GEORGIA MUSEUM OF ART
Meet our legendary maker, Michael Lachowski, who first arrived in Athens back in 1974 to attend UGA as an art student. After forming the band Pylon with his roommate and a few other art department students, they quickly made headlines in the post-punk music scene. These days, Michael works at the Georgia Museum of Art, which has grown tremendously through its programing along with permanent and temporary exhibitions to serve the Athens community.
What is the best hidden gem in Athens?
The Georgia Museum of Art because we’ve been told by visitors that it’s a hidden gem. We have a ton of great programming and experiences that visitors can enjoy, and it’s free!
Which local event is your favorite?
I’ve always been a fan of our annual festivals; my favorite now is the Athens Art Book Fair during AthFest Weekend in June. It’s put on by the Lamar Dodd School of Art faculty and students.
Discover our homegrown makers, including artists, musicians, performers and more, whether it’s by attending a local production or immersing yourself in our celebrated museums.

There’s no better way to get a feel for Athens’ creative makers than by visiting the Georgia Museum of Art. It’s the state’s official art museum and features a permanent collection of more than 18,000 works of art as well as temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Another way to experience our makers is by attending a local performance at one of our incredible venues. The UGA Performing Arts Center showcases the world’s best performers in classical, jazz and world music, along with innovative and cutting-edge programming.

The Classic Center Theatre is also a great spot where you can see the Athens Symphony Orchestra, renowned singers, comedians, and more.
Looking to see an original production? We have a strong local theatre presence with Athens Creative Theatre and Town and Gown Players, which both produce classic and original works.
If you’re interested in spending the afternoon admiring works of art, we’re also home to a variety of museums and galleries.
For a unique experience, take a trip over to The Athenaeum, which explores contemporary art from local artists and students in an open forum, mirroring a traditional athenaeum.
Another great way to experience art is through a self-guided tour at the Lyndon House Arts Center. This modern art gallery is built on the back of the Ware-Lyndon House museum and hosts impressive exhibitions from local, regional and national artists.
