FOOD TRUCKS By: Lee Bowden
Food trucks have been around for longer than many people think. We had those traveling cowboy kitchens in the 19th century, the ever-iconic wienermobile of the 1930s, tasty taco trucks touting Tuesday treats and even the humble hot dog stand before we had the exquisite spread rolled out before us now. I, for one, feel incredibly fortunate to have tens of hundreds of local food trucks, each with its own unique cultural cooking styles, to choose from on a daily basis. As a Gwinnett native, I am no stranger to a Food Truck Friday and the City of Duluth always has me covered. Every Friday (May 3 - July 26) from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m, the streets come alive with brightly colored food trucks, plenty of hungry patrons and live musical performances on the Town Green. Come and treat yourself to an array of cuisines for you to sink your teeth into, spanning from homemade bento boxes a la the Bento Bus, delicate and buttery lobster rolls coming from Cousins Maine Lobster or that one savory meat pie you thought only existed on British TV from That Pie Place. With plenty of great dishes to choose from, all your foodie friends can settle down happily with their preferred plates and share in the good vibes and good food. If you need a pick-me-up a bit earlier in your week, fret not! Lilburn hosts its very own Food Truck Tuesdays. Happening in the park on the second Tuesday of every month (May - October), Food Truck Tuesdays promise you and your family a fantastic lineup of good eats to help

you recover from those microwave Mondays! Pop on over to Atl. Philly Cheesesteaks' truck for a sandwich as long as your friend’s arm, indulge in an oh-so-fluffy s’morelicious pastry from the Simply Done Donuts truck or (if you’re a freak for a good dumpling like me) order about 50 crispy dumplings at the authentic Hawaiian Hapa Kitchen truck. Anyone feeling a bit peckish? Just me? I don’t believe you. Sometimes bars have the genius idea of coexisting with food trucks. Truck n’ Tap, a local restaurant with two locations in Gwinnett, hosts a revolving list of food trucks each night that always pair perfectly with Truck n’ Tap’s own 20+ refreshing beers on tap! Nothing hits the spot quite like an ice cold lager, oodles of classic bar games to play (you can find me out here losing at cornhole), plenty of space both indoor and outdoor to spread out with the gang and a beefy burger aptly named the Texican (with it’s juicy 4 oz. patty loaded with chili, beer cheese and spicy jalapeños) handed to you by the patty masters of local favorite food truck: Breakdown Burger. Any way you swing it, food trucks are the big deal on wheels! If you find yourself fiending for a new flavor near you, check out streetfoodfinder. com to find trucks in your area. Or, you can come and park yourself near me next time you’re craving some fantastic “fast food.” I’ll take you to the tastiest trucks, and who knows, maybe I’ll even foot the bill!

THE DINER AT SUGAR HILL By: Ashley Topham
Searching for the ultimate cozy restaurant in Gwinnett that evokes a sense of nostalgia? Head over to The Diner at Sugar Hill and get ready to be treated to an ambiance and meal that’s worth raving about! Since opening its doors in 2009, this local establishment has become a beloved gathering place for families, couples and foodie lovers alike. It’s the type of place where you instantly feel like you’re at home, from its friendly service to its comforting ambiance. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with some regulars stopping by for multiple meals a day! To kick off our taste test, we’re highlighting the Belgian waffle from their breakfast menu. When you think of the ideal waffle, this is it. It’s perfectly golden with a crisp texture on the outside but a fluffy and sweet flavor on the inside. For lunch, look no further than the chicken fajita panini to satisfy your afternoon craving. Featuring
grilled chicken seasoned to perfection, sauteed onions and bell peppers, this delicious panini is then topped with Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, giving a delicious, melty and cheesy bite. Dinner is another delicious affair when you order their oak fire grilled salmon salad. The toppings include grilled portobello mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, tomato, red onion and cucumber, which is then served on mixed field greens with a side of balsamic vinaigrette. You may not think to order seafood at a local diner, but we’re here to tell you that you should! You can’t forget about dessert, especially with the display case of freshly baked and decorated cakes welcoming you inside the diner! Choose from an assortment of decadent desserts, or grab a couple for the table and be prepared to go into your happy place. It’s the best way to end your meal (even breakfast) for the ultimate comfort experience.

AN ITALIAN SAUSAGE TORTELLINI SOUP RECIPE By: Rachel Jeffers
On a cold winter night, when you’re craving something comfy and cozy to warm up your soul and finger tips, give this tortellini soup recipe a try. It’s easy to make and will become an instant favorite for your family. The ease of this “dump” recipe (dump everything in a pot together) makes it the perfect set and forget crockpot soup! You’ll find that the creamy texture from the cream cheese (really anything with cream cheese is yummy) compliments the acid of the tomatoes and spinach. Plus, the starch from the tortellini thickens up the soup, and even more the next day, making it rich and hearty.

• 1 lb Italian sausage – It has a fantastic blend of herbs and spices. I use mild. • 32 oz chicken broth – Adds another layer of flavor. • 2 cans Italian diced tomatoes with seasoning, onion and garlic – These staples are the building blocks to any good soup. • 1 bag spinach – Tossing in a handful of baby spinach or frozen spinach sneaks in some extra veggies. • 1 block cream cheese – Don’t skip the cream cheese! The silky texture and taste is so good. • 1 package cheese tortellini – I use frozen tortellini because it cooks faster but you’re more than welcome to use dried ones; just note that it’ll take longer to cook.
1. Set the crockpot to 6-8 hours. 2. Brown the sausage and drain the grease. 3. “Dump” the sausage, 2 cans of tomatoes, a bag of spinach and chicken broth. 4. Chop up the cream cheese into cubes and add to the crockpot. *Or microwave for 30 seconds to soften cream cheese and smash into the sides of the pot to mix into the soup. 5. 30 minutes before serving, add the frozen tortellini. 6. Serve with crusty bread to soak up the goodness on the bottom of the bowl.

Miso Hot Toddy
1. Bring 1 cup water to a boil. 2. Add 1 teaspoon miso paste and stir until dissolved. 3. Pour miso water into a mug with your favorite black tea. 4. Steep the miso black tea for 1-2 minutes. 5. Garnish your Miso Hot Toddy with a sprig of rosemary and enjoy!
Mixed Berry Cider
1. Pour 1 gallon of fresh apple cider into a slow cooker and add: • 4 cups of cranberry juice • 4 cups of fresh blueberries • 1 orange, sliced into wheels • 4 cinnamon sticks 2. Cover and cook the cider mix on low heat for 3 hours. 3. Serve in mugs with blueberries for garnish and enjoy!
Sage Lavender Latte
1. Pour 1 cup milk into a pot and add: • 2 sage leaves • A pinch of dried lavender flowers • 2 tablespoons sugar 2. Steep on medium heat for 5 minutes. 3. Pour 1 cup of coffee into a mug, leaving room for milk. 4. Top coffee with steeped milk. 5. Garnish with a sage sprig and enjoy!

A NIGHT FOR EVERYONE TO SHINE By: Abby Wilkerson
On February 13, hundreds of kings and queens will be crowned in Gwinnett County alone. These royals will strut a paparazzi-filled red carpet, partake in a catered sit-down dinner and dance the night away at an unforgettable prom experience. This incredible event, known as Night to Shine, is a worldwide celebration that was started by the Tim Tebow Foundation. It’s open to anyone who has a disability aged 14 and older to attend and is hosted by local churches across the globe. Honored guests are paired with vetted volunteer buddies who escort them through the complimentary magical evening. Parents and caregivers are welcome to stay and enjoy dinner and an evening in the respite room lounge at the event site. Gwinnett Church is set to host its 8th annual Night to Shine prom this year. “We are able to host a maximum of 400 kings and queens,” shared Al Causey, head of Adult Ministries at Gwinnett Church. “The event involves 200 event volunteers, as well as 400-500 teenage and adult buddies who serve as dates for the night.” Gwinnett Church’s Night to Shine features a red carpet entrance, limo rides, catered dinner, photo booths with characters, candy stations, karaoke, a balloon drop and of course, dancing. Each event is different depending on the host church, but all Night to Shine events include a crowning ceremony where each and every guest is honored as a King or Queen.

When the months are dark and chilly, the seasonal depression sets in. Hibernation is easy but eventually stir crazy vibes make the need for socialization a MUST! But what to do? Would you rather host a game night at home or play games out with friends?
Game Night In Grab the games, order some pizza and BYOB for a great night amongst friends. This is a favorite activity in mid-January when sports games have come to a halt and it’s the dead of winter. Everyone brings a game or two that they enjoy to offer as an option. We’ve even hosted two different rooms for game night (kids' games in one room and adults only in the other) or you can make it family-friendly for all to participate. *I love this because it’s also a great way to “try out” games before you purchase…because we’ve all bought a game with great intentions and after one round realized it's NOT that fun. Games We DiG: • O-Trio Game - an "O trio" is a strategy board game that is a variation of tic-tac-toe for 2-4 players. • Scattegories - an oldie but goodie - category game is a popular word game, more accurately known as Scattergories, where players race against a timer to list words that fit a specific category and start with a randomly rolled letter. • You Don’t Know Jack - a series of digital party games where players use their phones, tablets or computers to participate in various minigames that are displayed on a central screen, such as a TV. The games focus on creativity, humor and cleverness rather than reflexes.

Game Night Out Team Trivia is a great excuse to grab a group to put your heads together for a night out, especially when there really isn’t much going on during the week. You can find a nightly game of trivia or bingo on most nights at a variety of local watering holes across the county. *I prefer this activity when friends want to get together, but no one wants to host, clean up their house or cook for a crowd. It also breaks up the monotony of conversations with folks you spend a lot of time with and no longer have the “catch up” chit chat to grace the table. It can be a family affair as older kids love being “runners” to turn in answers and they surprisingly are helpful in sharing information that they’ve recently covered in school (opposed to those of us who have filed away the British Lit facts to never be recalled again). Other alternatives are “game” activities such as nostalgic game centers with bowling and laser tag, like Stars and Strikes or a bit more elevated, friendly like Pickle Ball or Top Golf with cocktails in hand. Another fun new trend we are seeing is Mahjong game nights popping up at various locations (Pickle & Social hosted in December). SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: THE CORNER BOOKSTORE By: Ashley Topham
1434 Atlanta Hwy, Auburn, GA 30011 When I think of the ultimate cozy day, the first thing that comes to mind is spending the afternoon at an independent bookstore! There’s something so comforting about going into a new bookstore, browsing through its inventory and taking home your new prized possession to dive into. If you’re looking for the perfect bookstore just outside of Gwinnett to check out and add to your ever-growing list, get ready to discover the charm behind the Corner Bookstore. Originally located in Winder, the Corner Bookstore has a unique backstory! It was founded in 1976 by a local resident named Mary Ginn, who had a vision of a community bookstore located at the Windy Corners Shopping Center. This is also where the name of the bookstore comes from! Over the years, the bookstore moved locations and went under new ownership by a gentleman named Jackie Talbot. Unfortunately, he found himself in the position to sell the business, which is where its current owner,
Tom Vail, comes into the picture! He purchased the Corner Bookstore in 1996, growing a loyal customer base ever since. Mr. Vail had prior experience running an independent bookstore after previously owning a mostly used bookstore in the DeKalb County area. Corner Bookstore moved into its current residence in Auburn in 2024, located inside a charming white building with a red roof. Here, you’ll find a variety of subject sections that have changed over the years depending on customer interests and growing trends. You can find everything from Young Adult Fiction and Literary Classics to Children’s Books and so much more. Mr. Vail makes sure to stock new books along with trade-ins to give a variety of selection regarding genre and authors. This community bookstore is a great place to get lost for a few hours, discover a new author or genre and simply enjoy the cozy atmosphere. THE MOUNTAIN TOP LODGE By: Lee Bowden
As a traveler on a tight schedule, the idea of paradise has always seemed to me to be some far-off, unreachable destination seen only through the screen of my phone. Little did I know, paradise was a lot closer than I thought. About ten minutes away from the heart of downtown Dahlonega, my partner and I found ourselves nestled comfortably in the North Georgia woods at The Mountain Top Lodge. What used to be an old farmhouse covered in handmade quilts and ceramic chickens is now a luxury inn with endless amenities and the most hospitable hosts we have ever encountered. The owners of the property, Heather and Tommy Breedlove, have cultivated a space that deeply reflects their own personalities – and what a pair they make! With Heather’s love of local art and community, she has transformed the Lodge into a mid-century modern marvel. Deep greens, brass statues and intricate woodwork tie the space together aesthetically but it is Heather’s own love of bringing people together that permeates the Lodge. If Heather is the heart of the operation, then Tommy Breedlove is the brain that birthed it all. As someone who felt removed from the world and its natural wonders, Tommy had a Thoreauvian epiphany to create a down-to-
earth paradise in the hopes of combating the isolating anxieties many face in our increasingly digital world. Thus, he purchased a bed and breakfast in the woods and got to work. The inn itself contains nine rooms and houses three cabins, perfect for work gatherings, family reunions, weddings or just an intimate vacation with your boo. Each room and cabin is uniquely decorated with an eye for fine detail and comfort, yet it is the communal spaces that truly shine. With a cozy living area, staff-curated library, community dining room, wine garden, outdoor pavilion, onsite restaurant and more, the Lodge encourages strangers to meet, mingle and leave as friends. I myself got a good taste of this community when I was invited by Heather and her guests to participate in making flower arrangements (I was not good at it but they were very sweet). What was even sweeter was the cuisine! As a baker, I never turn down a sweet treat and the Lodge is swimming in sugary treasures like homemade chocolates placed every morning in guest mailboxes or the fresh-baked cookies set out every day in the communal living room. As a space of constant expansion, The Mountain Top Lodge boasts many future upgrades that I am aching to see but the staff and the sense of community are the reasons that I will keep coming back.

Planning the perfect date for Valentine’s Day can be the most nerve-racking Google search of your life. Finding a restaurant that’s dark-but-not-too-dark, picking out a bouquet that won’t make your lover sneeze or finding the best textured bonbon is not always an easy feat. Of course, you want to factor in your partner’s likes and dislikes, energy levels, expectations and your own happiness.
Feeling first date jitters? Take your darling out for a Hallmark night by visiting the charming city of Lawrenceville. Dive fully into classic romance and buy your special someone an arrangement from Lovin Florist, then whisk them off to the Aurora Theatre to immerse yourselves in the arts for a few hours. After that cultural pick-me-up, walk on over to Local Republic for an exclusive Valentine’s Day dinner menu, where the chefs put their hearts into the dishes and the bartenders make sure you have a truly excellent nightcap. Here are some tips on how to create the perfect Valentine’s Day itinerary so that your special night is stress-free! Let’s start with the three-prong date model. Get that sweetie pie a GIFT, give them an EXPERIENCE, and always, always, buy them DINNER. With that approach in mind, check out my recs of three cities where I would wine and dine my sweetheart or take some friends out for those perfect Palentine’s Day vibes in Gwinnett County.
Single ladies and gents, I didn’t forget about you. It’s time to take back Valentine's Day and invite the whole group chat on an easy-going date to Suwanee! Start your platonic date off right and treat the person beside you to some classical music, coffee and delectable macaroons at Mozart Bakery. Then, take turns serenading each other and snacking on Lamb Kabobs at Echo Karaoke (which is only a few steps away from the bakery. How handy!) After damaging your best friends’ ears, slide a few doors down to my absolute favorite Ramen bar, Umaido and buy your buddies some apology takoyaki. Laid back, fuel-efficient and fun, this (platonic) date night in Suwannee never fails! I hope everyone’s three-prong holiday is a success this year; cheers to all the flowers bought, experiences sought and dinners…served hot? I would consider myself quite the coffee connoisseur, always on the search for unique shops in the Gwinnett and Metro Atlanta area. While I haven’t counted up the sum total of coffee shops that I’ve visited, my camera roll is a testament to just how many caffeinated sips I’ve tried. For me, a coffee shop that stands out will usually have one of three things: an interesting backstory, a quirky atmosphere and delicious homemade syrups. With that being said, here are my recommendations of 5 coffee shops within 50 miles of Gwinnett that you should check out!
This coffee shop was founded by Sabrina Kaylor, an artist and digital marketer, along with her husband. Their artistic brand is vibrant, focusing on their “Good Mood Juice” slogan. As for their coffee menu, you’ll be impressed by their creative creations, like the Guava Goodness latte, featuring guava puree and almond syrup. It’s a fruity and delicious twist on a traditional latte experience!

Owned by an Asian-American team, this coffee roastery company shares its background through its unique coffee creations. Located inside Minhwa Spirits, you’ll discover a fun ambiance with rich green and brown tones. My personal favorite from their drink menu is the Coconut Ube latte, which comes with oat milk and features a housemade coconut ube syrup. 30
This organic farm-to-cup coffee shop has an incredible backstory. It was founded by Leticia and her husband, Harry Hutchins, who co-owns the business with Leticia’s father, Al Lopez. Al Lopez runs their family’s coffee farm in Copan, Honduras, harvesting coffee beans, which are then shipped to the Canton shop to be roasted and turned into delicious coffee.
