Director Letter

A LETTER FROM THE

DIRECTOR The 2020-21 school year was a year of transition, adaptation, and innovation for the Academies of Nashville and all of us who play a part in their continued success. The COVID-19 pandemic affected our work, but it didn’t stop us. It redirected us at times, but it couldn’t throw us off course. We simply changed how we worked with students and made sure they continued to get the unique learning and career preparation experiences the Academies have become so well known for over the past 15 years. Here are a few examples: • We hosted the 12th Annual Career Exploration Fair in a brand-new virtual format. Students engaged with future career possibilities via a website complete with 192 videos from local business partners and connected with businesses through synchronous industry professional panels. The website has now seen over 3,600 unique visitors and more than 33,000 page visits. We are grateful to Nashville Hub and Alignment Nashville for providing financial support to help us pivot to the virtual format and for making professional development and resources available at no cost to Metro Nashville Public Schools. • Our AON Student Ambassadors participated in a virtual Student Cabinet facilitated by Director of Schools Dr. Adrienne Battle and Dr. Michelle Springer, Director of Student Services, and gave perspective and insights into the pandemic’s effect on student experience and education. • We also saw a big change in leadership in 2020-21. We said goodbye and a huge thank you to Donna Gilley, our director of 5 years and one of the founders of the Academies, when she retired in December 2020. Donna is a great friend, and I was honored to succeed her in 2021. After 17 years in other roles with the district, I’m excited to join the Academies team, carry the work forward and help create even more partnerships between our schools and the Nashville business community, increase post-secondary opportunities, and revive the brand and Academies of Nashville work impacted by the pandemic – all for the benefit of MNPS students. And I look for ward to working with all of you to make it happen! Thanks for ever y thing you do to suppor t the Academies of Nashville, year af ter year af ter year.

ANTIOCH HIGH SCHOOL

2020-2021 AT A GLANCE All 4 of Antioch High School career academies continue to receive the recognition of NCAC Model Status Academies Antioch High School is a World IB School 168 Antioch High School students earned Industry Certifications during the middle of a global pandemic Through the pandemic, Antioch High School remained steadfast in their effort to educate our feeder schools on the Academy and pathway selections that await them as they embark on their high school career. Albeit, recruiting efforts looked different, but our school counselors and Academy Ambassadors created a virtual tour/video of our different Academies and pathways at AHS Frank Zimmerer was the 2020-21 Antioch High School Teacher of the Year

ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING & AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY The 2020-21 school year was full of challenges, but some brought new opportunities. Last year a few pathways were rearranged within the academies of AHS and in the process AEAT was granted the opportunity to select a new pathway. With careful consideration and input from students, teachers, business partners, and district leadership, BioSTEM was chosen to be the new pathway.

ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY & MARKETING We were able to provide continuous support and teaching for our students via individualized meetings though online platforms or phone conferences. The team focused on student's academic needs, as well as social/emotional needs and family assistance. Once we returned to in-person learning, we were able to connect with some of our students. We held virtual field trips, job shadows, and other experiential learning opportunities to expand their education in the safest environment possible.

ACADEMY OF TEACHING & SERVICE Despite a difficult year the Academy of Teaching and Service had many reasons to celebrate. We secured new partnerships with Fisk University and the Greater Nashville Alliance of Black School Educators. The ATS staff ensured our students felt supported, motivated, and driven to reach success despite any challenges they faced.

FRESHMAN ACADEMY A big highlight for the FA this year was the hall decorating contest. Teachers and students had been working tirelessly to catch up, so there has not been much time for fun. This was exactly what our students needed. They wanted to make sure all of their cultures were represented, and colored "Christmas" in different languages. They also created Hanukkah, Kwanza, and Eid decorations. It was also wonderful to watch the kids walk down the hall with pride while they pointed out their contributions. The icing on the cake was the FA WON! It really brought our academy together.

THE TENNESSEE CREDIT UNION ACADEMY OF BUSINESS & FINANCE Despite incredible challenges, the TTCU Academy of Business and Finance team pulled together to support one another, the students, and the school community. TTCU found many opportunities for success through: FAFSA Night, relevant IC opportunities, SEL strategies, Bear mentors for new teachers, and a fully staffed academy. It can't be overstated how much of our success must be attributed to the amazing people who make up this academy. Our team is active, involved, and invested in the success of our students. An impossible year was only possible because of the incredible teamwork for the TTCU Academy.

STUDENT of the YEAR: WENDY MARTINEZ Wendy Martinez has been an Antioch High School since her freshman year. She has served as a member of the Tennessee Credit Union Academy of Business and Finance and represented her academy the past two years by becoming an Academy Ambassador and a certified bank teller. McNeely, Pickett, and Fox, one of Nashville’s top public relations firms, brings a wealth of opportunities for Hillsboro students. As an Academy Partner of the Year, students at HHS were able to create a YouTube channel that introduces every facet of a public relations firm. This channel acted as a virtual job shadow during a year of Covid restrictions. T-Mobile, our newest partner, met virtually with marketing classes collaborating with the marketing class’s unit on Customer Service via Social Media.

FRESHMAN ACADEMY Freshman Academy English teachers spent the first nine weeks visiting the homes of students in Edgewood to ensure that parents and students were able to access the technology needed for virtual school. Additionally, the Freshman Academy campaigned with students and parents to ensure that as many students as possible took the MAP reading, math assessments, and the EOC. Finally, because of the growth that our students showed in reading, we ended the year with an in-person commitment to graduation ceremony and an in-door field day sponsored by the PTSO. The students celebrated Persevering during the Pandemic with music, art, dance, and of course amazing snacks provided by the PTSO.

STUDENT of the YEAR: PAA MENSAH Although the world is marred in uncertainty and fear, there is a bright light shining through it all. We also recognized our students who earned Honor Roll or Dean’s list each quarter with various rewards for their hard work. We sought out feedback from our students and parents to see what things we could put in place to assist them during this new educational experience, and we implemented some of those items to ensure all of our stakeholders were aware of the goings on in our academy and the school.
