The intention for this project was to design a portable for Everett Elementary Schools in Lincoln, NE. The focus for the portable was safe, accessible play for children in a biophilic, nature based design. The orientation of the portable is intended for it to be centered around a community garden with natural materials chosen specifically to allow children the tactile feel of nature.
The material selections for this project mirror some of the tactile textures that one would find in a natural environment, with pebble walls and faux grass flex zones. Furniture selections provide flexible classroom settings while also allowing for collaboration between students.
Large windows facing the garden also bring in the wonder and imagination for children, allowing them to have isolated and independent play inside.
The Intention for this project was to bring back the deeper connection to the food we eat. I transformed the existing building into a space where people can come and learn about the crops that are grown in Nebraska and find a sense of belonging to the food that is grown and consumed in our state.
Bringing some of that food production back to the heart of downtown Lincoln will help consumers learn more about the food they are consuming, contributing to both physical wellbeing and emotional sense of self.
Adding a greenhouse to the space as well as kitchens where users can learn how to cook the food will be extremely beneficial. This will allow for people to have a choice: either to come to learn about how the food is grown as well as how to cook it, or to come and indulge in the historic building and purchase goods made from the greenhouse.
