EMBARCADERO de LEGAZPI
project lead | under construction 2023 | design concept to design development
An especially breathtaking view of the Mayon Volcano and its perfect cone is clear from the Embarcadero de Legazpi, a commercial mall originally built in 2010 along the gulf of Albay. It is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and connected to the local loading docks and major port terminal. While contextually rich, the absence of cohesiveness to these elements has left the Embarcadero de Legazpi in its current state, overlooked and lackluster.

Challenged to trigger a renaissance of life back into the development, the proposal aims to reimagine the Embarcadero as a safehouse for creatives and artists in the Philippines. With the introduction of striking forms, bright colors and interesting pathways, the mall creates a diversified experience for all. Using Art as a Catalyst, the Embarcadero de Legazpi establishes itself as a center for life, leisure, pop, creativity, self-improvement and beauty.

The Embarcadero is enhanced with a modern day take on the light house – an LED screen with digital art.
Stitching the Seas – the boardwalk works as an artery along the water connecting seamlessly to the roadside docks, and neighboring terminals.

Building a series of platforms from the edge of the development allows visitors to engage intimately with the waterfront and the grandeur of the Mayon Volcano.

The heart of the Embarcadero is a 3-storey atrium, topped with a large domed roof, comprised of a series of intricate exposed trusses. This 360-degree space is accessible from all around and from every floor, making it the ideal space for an artist to showcase their larger than life creations.
Simply offering this space as a venue for complete freedom of expression in scale or medium can pique the interest of any number of artists. By implementing the creative use for the site, the general public may be persuaded into an untapped appreciation for the arts.
