A er blocking 59 apps, the Ministry of Electronics and Informa on Technology banned 118 Chinese origin-based applica ons followed by pu ng a ban on highly played violent shooter game PUBG, owned by Tencent amid the growing border tensions with China following Beijing’s provocaon in the Ladakh region. Variety of games, music players, video pla orms such as Youku, social pla orms WeChat Work, web browsers and search engines such as Baidu, payment system Alipay are included in the list of the blocked apps. On June 29, 2020 the Government put a ban on 59 Chinese apps which also included the popular short-video app- TikTok. A er 59 app, in July, 47 ap-

plica ons were blocked that were clones of the blocked apps. The decision is taken in the “interests of safety, security, integrity and sovereignty of the Indian cyberspace and crores of people. As these banned apps which are termed as ‘malicious apps’ were engaged in the ac vi es which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India and security of state and public order”. The apps have been banned under Sec on 69A of the Informa on Technology Act. The applica ons blocked involve both the mobile and non-mobile internet-enabled devices. A er the ban of apps now the total count is 224. The ban is indeed a ban for a be er Atmanirbhar Digital Bharat. After blocking such applica ons many Indian app makers came in the market and introduced their own apps which got high reach in downloads in few weeks just a er the Chinese apps got banned.
