TRAI advocates domestic manufacturing & digital sovereignity

T

he telecom regulator TRAI advocates domestic manufacturing and digital sovereignity to provide opportunity for local players to create a sharp focus on dgital infrastructure investments. The Chairman R.S. Sharma said that "government policies relating to electronics and local handset manufacturing have “paid rich dividends”, and added that more needs to be done, particularly to push domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment and ensure value addition".

“Ultimately countries have strategies where they actually dump things and they try to kill the domestic industry and then they raise the prices. Essentially we need to realise this tactics and we need to appropriately give preferential market access policy which has been there need to ensure we implement them”, he added.

BSNL & MTNL cancels 4G tender of Chinese telecom gear

harat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telecom Nagam Limited (MTNL) has cancelled the 4G tenders after Telecom Minsitry asks it not to use Chinese telecom gear. A new tender will be floated which will have emphasis on preference to Make in India in order to promote domestic manufacturing and pushes to make India selfreliant. Nearly 75% of the telecom equipment is sourced from and provided by two major players- ZTE and Huawei. These are the two major companies for supplying equipment.

CamScanner gets an alternative SelfScan

anned CamScanner gets an alternative SelfScan app to scan documents. The app was launched by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee claiming that this is what reflects patriotism. The app is presently not available on the Google Play Store, but on the Amazon App Store and the Samsung Galaxy Store.

However, all Android device users can download the APK to install the app from the official site.

The features of the app have been listed on Amazon's application store. It claims that the data always stays in the device and there will be no storing of data by the app on any server. Once installed, the application will not require an internet connection for Scanning documents even for OCR. Amid heightened tensions between India and China along the LAC, the Centre on 29 June announced a ban on 59 apps, all of them Chinese-owned, including the hugely popular TikTok, UC Browser and SHAREit.

STBs were issued in bulk to Cable Operators without enabling the SMS with the required inputs. The STBs were sold to subscribers without any invoice and lien NOT transferred. In absence of programming, STBs enabled viewing of all programs transferred with encryp on in digital mode. Thus STBs func oned without addressability ac ng only as D2A(Digital to Analog) converters.

Subscriber was not billed item-wise (connec vity charges, PAY content charges, any other charges and taxes) showing Subscriber ID, CO(Cable Operator) ID and HSP details. De-facto, the CO charged a flat rate fixed monthly subscrip on and remi ed a part of it to the HSP. The HSP, instead of billing the subscriber, raised bulk bills upon the CO based upon number of STBs issued and deemed installed.

The success of DAS installa on was reckoned from the sta s cs of number of STBs issued out of the warehouse of the HSP. This prac ce on ground was in total viola on of the spirit of DAS amendment to the Cable Act 2011.

Mul -program, mul RF-channels uni-direc onal video delivery by HSPs to subscribers has two modes; DTH (without an intermediary like a CO) and CATV Distribu on Pla orm Operator (DPO) comprising of HSP+CO. The DTH segment largely operates on pre-paid model & has be er addressability compliance. CATV DPO (comprising of over 1500 HSPs and 70000 Cos) operates on post-paid basis & has NO COMPLIANCE at subscriber end.

Gross viola ons in this segment are (a) HSPs billing COs instead of Subscribers, (b) HSP made bouquets selected by COs delivered to Subscribers © Legi mizing levy of Carriage (when carriage is implied in network capacity charges) and Placement fee by HSPs upon Broadcasters without such provision in the Cable Act. It would, thus, be seen that the whole business model is a plethora of contradic ons under the Regulator.

Our business is also no exception. However, innovative approaches and proactive planning has helped us to ensure smooth business continuity even amidst the current situation.

We gauged the situation before lockdown was announced and introduced specially curated packs like our Vishesh Manoranjan Pack, Super Entertainment Dhamaka Pack and the basic-level Infopack to ensure that our subscribers had enough and more options, both price-wise and content-wise; to stay connected and safe at home. ese proactive initiatives, along with our Digital Payment platform & 24X7 services on ground have helped us signi cantly hold our fort.

How you spent your quarantine days?

How do you feel working from home? What do you think should this concept change?

Working from home, conducting virtual meeting etc are all part of the new normal and I am enjoying every bit of this change. is new normal will make people more and more digitally connected.

I am sure that with the passage of time all these practices will become our way of life, since nothing is more valuable than human lives.

How are you dealing with the entertainment platform while ensuring safety for your team members and viewers ?

For us, the well-being of all our stakeholders is of utmost importance. Hence, we had circulated precautionary measures about

Hence my major part of the day is being spent reviewing the well-being of all our employees, our LCOs whom we consider as a part of our Parivaar, followed by business review so as to nd out means & ways of improving our oďŹ&#x20AC;erings to subscribers & keep them happy & engaged.

Moreover, we had laid down very speci c set of guidelines for our employees, Business Partners & Cable Operators and trained them through different online mode to percolate it to the last mile. We carry out regular audit of each of these guidelines to ensure highest level of compliance. is approach has helped us tremendously to carry on business and yet being safe and healthy.

What impact has COVID-19 crisis brought on the overall scenario of industry and what are the challenges you are tackling with?

Currently this industry is witnessing quite a few challenges which are in turn slowing down the growth process. e biggest challenge comes from the O platform which currently has almost no/very low regulations. Some of the O apps are even showing content of pay channel absolutely free of cost.

Relevant regulations may be required to be put in place to create a level playing eld for all. Another signi cant challenge remains in the huge investment required for upgrading the last mile with bre for F H which is critical for growing the business. is piece must be addressed to realize our dream of Digital India.

Since everything had has been locked down and though unlock-1 has started so what kind of aid you seek from Government & Ministry of I&B?

which could ease the cost burden for many DPOs resulting in consolidation and expansion of the business.

Another critical aspect is to promote digital payment amongst end consumers. is is necessary, especially in current situation, to ensure contact less payment collection.

A major impetus towards this would be to reduce the charges on online payment of cable TV subscription fees.

Last but not least, we ought to work out a structured and uniform policy on “Grant of right to way” so as to enable the LCOs to smoothly establish the last mile connectivity across all cities of India.

A “Common Duct approach” could be a probable solution in this direction. Prompt intervention from Government towards this aspect may lead to operational excellence.

What are your plans to help LCOs while ensuring safety to ensure services to consumers in lockdown?

As mentioned earlier, well-being of all our Parivaar is of utmost importance to us. Keeping in mind the same, we had circulated different kind of help guide, lea et, poster in 12 vernacular languages to all our LCOs explaining them the precautionary measures, safety procedure that they need to undertake during this COVID-19 pandemic. We maintain multiple channels of communications with all LCOs so that we are well connected for any kind of support and guidance at any point in time.

How do you see the future of media & entertainment industry a er the COVID- 19 crisis? is COVID-19 pandemic has changed the consumer outlook signi cantly. A “New Normal” has emerged post this pandemic & we all must embrace this new normal to steer our way forward while being safe & healthy.

I sent a message on 25th March to every employee that even if this lockdown lasts for 6 months, everyone will get 100% salary and there will be no reduc on. Almost every week I kept sending these messages regularly.

Due to the system and policies of the country and the yearlong slowdown in the telecom sector, which was going on con nuously for 6-7 years, we were already going through a very serious economic crisis and then this new crisis.

There would have been hardly 20 lakhs cash reserve for such a huge workforce. From the the beginning, we had only three things in the name of capital-good inten on, honesty and hard work.

I am telling honestly that there was no way I could handle this crisis. Every month fixed expenses of 6-7 crores and no cash in hand. God took the responsibility of driving my cart and believe me, it was his miracle that the cart kept moving. At least 30-80% more than the total payment the company would have paid in any 6 months in the last 20 years, that many payments were made in only 3 months from April to June this year. The company paid all suppliers, partners, service providers & everyone in these three

months. All employees got 100% salary. It was possible only with the help and miracles of God. When we started Savitri Group in 1999, we had made a lot of policy from day one. One of the policy was that 95% of the employment in Savitri group will be reserved for those who are unemployed and those who are weaker socially and economically will get priority in this too. We also included people in our employment policy who were forced to enter in nega ve ac vi es like crime/ kidnapping / Naxal / terrorism to fulfill their salt and bread needs due to social & economic reasons and lack of employment. We are happy that in the last 20 years we have followed our policy to the maximum .

Countless people lost their lives walking on foot. Some died of hunger, some died due to accident & many people fell vic m to the system. Whenever something goes wrong in the society, its blame goes to the whole society and country. I also consider myself responsible for whatever happened to the poor laborers & helpless people during this corona epidemic and will con nue to earnestly atone for this sin. My inten on to write is not to tell anyone about myself. I would be happy if you read it as pretense, drama or story. My aim is only to tell people about a good & social thought. My aim is to try to bring social & economic changes in the country. If affected by this thought only one tries to change the life of a person who is socially & economically backward, wri ng this will be a success.

MIB issues registrations to 18 new MSOs, cancels 5 MSOs registrations

inistry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has granted registration to 18 new Multi-System Operators (MSOs) in the last three months (March 13, 2020 to 24 June, 2020). These are- Cloudnet Infocom Pvt. Ltd, Global Vision Cable TV & Internet, -Digital Network Pvt. Ltd, Digicast Network Pvt. Ltd, Bongaon Cable T.V. Network, FM Video, Uma Cable, Baroda Cable Network, Star Digital Cable TV Network, Smart India Digital Services and RK Digital Cable Network. Now the total number of registered MSOs now stands at 1664.

The Ministry has also cancelled the registrations of five MSOs between March and June, namely Modern Cable Network, Geo9 Cable Network, Inishia Media Pvt. Ltd, ALCOA Digital Pvt and City Online Media Pvt. Ltd.

Singapore High Court grants order to block access to illegal apps

A

sia Video Industry Association (AVIA) appreciates the move taken by Singapore High Court for blocking popular piracy streaming websites and illicit streaming device applications. The Singapore High Court has granted an order sought by BBC Studios, Discovery, the Premier League, La Liga and TVB for Singapore's Internet Service Providers (ISPs). An order was asked to block access to domains associated with popular piracy streaming sites and domains associated with popular illicit streaming device (ISD) applications as they impacted all businesses involved in the production and distribution of legitimate content. As mentioned in the press release, the order stated to block access to seventeen domains associated with popular piracy

streaming sites and forty-one domains associated with popular ISD applications. These apps, flagrantly infringe copyright by acting as gateways to websites or content servers streaming pirated content, are preloaded on ISD which are overtly sold in retail outlets such as Sim Lim Square and on popular e-markets.

A new study on the online content viewing behaviour in Singapore, found that 17% of Singapore consumers and nearly a third (32%) of 18-24 year old's, access streaming piracy websites or torrent sites. The survey, commissioned by the Asia Video Industry Association's Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) and conducted by YouGov, also found that 10% of consumers use an ISD to stream pirated content.

Tata Sons Foundation donates Rs10 cr to Maharashtra Govt

o help fight the coronavirus pandemic the Tata Sons Foundation makes donation of 100 ventilators, 20 Tata Winger based ambulances and Rs 10 crore to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in the State of Maharashtra. The amount donated will be channeled to set up an Immunology and Virus Infection Research Center. The ambulances are based on the Tata Winger BS6 models that were showcased at the Auto Expo earlier this year. The ambulances are available in two variants- 3200 WB and 3488 WB. The donations were made in the presence of the Shiv Sena Supremo and Chief Minister of Maharashtra- Uddhav Thackery and Board Members of Tata Sons, Mr N Chandra and the Mayor of Mumbai, Kishori Pednekar.

Centre to bring Sops to speed up resumption of film production

uring the inaugural address at 'FICCI Frames 2020', Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the government will launch Standards Operating Procedure (SOP) to speed up resumption of film production which were stopped in view of the coronavirus pandemic. he two laptops Dell XPS 13 & XPS 15 will get launched in India in the month of July which will be first digital launch event for Dell.

Though the launch date is not mentioned by Amazon. The Dell XPS 13 (2020) starts at $999 (roughly Rs. 74,600) and goes up to $2,199 (roughly Rs. 1.6 lakh). On the other hand, the Dell XPS 15 (2020) starts at $1,299 (roughly Rs. 97,000) and goes up to $2,749 (roughly Rs. 2.05 lakh). The Indian models will be available for purchase through Amazon. Specifications include the Dell XPS 13 possessing a 13-inch screen while the Dell XPS 15 will have 15-inch screen. Both will be powered by 10th gen Intel CPUs that will go up to a Core i7 and the screens for both the laptops are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6.Both have a carbon fibre keyboard deck and neither of them have standard USB Type-A ports.

They feature multiple USB Type-C ports and 3.5mm headphone jack. The XPS 13 can possess up to 32GB of RAM, and up to 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage, and comes with touch or non-touch display options. Whereas the XPS 15 can possess up to an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4GB GDDR6 GPU, 64GB of RAM, and the same storage as the 13-inch model. The XPS 13 weighs in at 1.19Kg, while the XPS 15 weighs 1.8Kg.

ccording to the Google Play Console and Geekbench listing Mi TV models will support up to a 1080p or full-HD resolution only.

There is not heard much about the 4K model, but logic dictates that there should be another one in the works.

This would allow Xiaomi to target different price points and probably give Amazon's Fire TV Stick series good competition. It has not been yet made it official. The Mi TV Stick full-HD version is reportedly codenamed 'aquaman,' along with a model number 'AESP0.' From the Geekbench score, it was earlier believed to have an Amlogic S805Y SoC, which has a maximum supported resolution of 1080p. Another rumoured model in question is the MiTV-ANSP0, which could be using an Amlogic S905X3 SoC, which does support 4K resolution.

acebook messaging service WhatsApp would be allowed to launch its new payments service in the country, but called for proof it can operate safely in terms of data protection in a competitive market said Roberto Campos Neto Brazil's Central Bank President .

On June 15 WhatsApp announced its first nationwide payment service in Brazil to allow users to send money to individuals or local businesses within a chat.

However, Brazil's central bank and Cade suspended the service, citing potential damage in the areas of competition, efficiency and data privacy. Regulators blocked WhatsApp partnerships with Visa, Mastercard, and Cielo SA. Cade revoked its decision, saying that preliminary information provided by both Cielo and Facebook indicated their agreement does not limit new deals with rivals and does not reduce consumers' choice.

The President noted that the service would start operating with 120 million users - its customer base in Brazil -, which according to the central bank is a significant scale and, therefore, requires a more thorough analysis. harti Global Ltd, the overseas arm of Bharti and UK Govt won auction for collapsed satellite broadband operator OneWeb. The British government will invest $500 million and take a significant equity share in OneWeb while Bharti Global will invest the same amount and provide commercial and operational leadership. Bharti and the UK government will each get a 45 per cent stake in OneWeb with existing investors retaining 10 per cent. The deal will enable OneWeb to complete the construction of a global satellite constellation that will provide enhanced broadband and other services to mobile and fixed terminals in countries around the world.

oogle Duo has extended the participant limit in a group video call to the Android version of its Duo up to 32 participants for web client. Duo Android users need to select the 'create group' option on the home screen. If users cannot add more than 11 participants, the updated feature is not yet available on the device. The availability of the 32-participant video group call feature for the iOS version of Google Duo is unclear.

Android users are now receiving the feature to add up to 32 participants during a Duo group video call. It is added that the feature is a server-side update and not coming with the latest version of the app, yet.
