FROM AAPL PRESIDENT - AKI KANO It is with honor and enthusiasm that I present the American Artists Professional League’s 95th Grand National Exhibition at the beautiful and historic Salmagundi Club of New York. We are proud to be celebrating our 95th anniversary this year in the place where AAPL was conceived.

AAPL was founded in 1928 in New York City by Frederick Ballard Williams and other prominent artists and sculptors with the mission to promote traditional realism in America. The first meeting was held at the Salmagundi Art Club, and we are honored to continue to display our GNE at this prestigious club.

Congratulations to all the amazing artists in our 2023 exhibition!

It’s been gratifying to help organize this GNE and continue AAPL’s 95-year-old tradition. In addition to the work involved in putting this show together, the past year has been successful in establishing a number of new initiatives as we continue to evolve and grow. We’re gratified to have continued to provide more opportunities for our member artists…

• The Second Annual Associates Members Only Online Exhibition. The support from our Associate Members is critical to AAPL, and we are delighted to provide this opportunity exclusively to Associate Members. This show can be viewed on our website - AAPLinc.org.

• We donated two scholarships to ARC and to The Art Students League totaling $10,000. This is the third year we have provided an ARC (Art Renewal Center) scholarship, and the first year we have provided one to the League. Congratulations to Noelle Gunsay, winner of the ARC Scholarship, and to Uma Maldonado, winner of the ASL Scholarship. A work from each of these artists is included in the 95th GNE. • ‘Realism on the Hudson’ at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, NY ran from August 26th to October 1st. It was the first time AAPL organized a show at this elegant and historic venue, and it was a success.

• Partnership with the Almenara Collection. We are delighted to have established a reciprocal relationship with Almenara, a non-profit initiative to promote realist artists and to use our online and social media platform to connect artists, art lovers, collectors, and galleries throughout the art world. Almenara has donated a $300 award to our show this year, as well as an invitation to the winning artist to have a work included in Almenara’s 2024 in-person exhibition in Spain. And AAPL has donated $300 to the winner of our award in Almenara’s show. The Almenara winner of this year's American Artists Professional League Award, Diego Glazer, was invited to show in this exhibition. Congratulations Diego!

• The $500 and Under Sale on AAPLinc.org. It has been gratifying to expand this unique opportunity, launched last year, to give artists and collectors the ability to purchase affordable artwork from leading realist artists in our member community.

• More marketing with American Art Collector, International Artist Magazine, and Fine Art Connoisseur. We have a special section in American Art Collector’s November issue featuring artwork from the 95th GNE along with a multi-page editorial article.

• New AAPL Board Members. Thanks to the miracle of Zoom, we have added several new board members from around the country. (New board members have asterisks next to their names on the Board of Directors page).

We also improved our awards structure to give winners more substantial awards. This year, we have three tiers of awards plus merchandise awards. We broke up the second tier of awards so there will be only one award given out in each of the following categories: $1,000 for Exceptional Still Life or Floral in any medium; $1,000 for Exceptional Scenic (Cityscape, Landscape, or Seascape) in any medium; and $1000 for Exceptional Figurative (Portrait, Figures, and/or Animal) in any medium.

My heartfelt thanks to the AAPL Board members who worked tirelessly to make this show possible, especially GNE Exhibition Chair Gary Eckhart. We are very grateful for the loyal support from the organization’s members, awards sponsors, patrons, and benefactors.

AAPL BOARD OF DIRECTORS Aki Kano - President

Jodie Kain - Vice President

Aki is a New York-based representational watercolorist. Her meticulous and sensitive paintings, which consist mostly of portraits, have been accepted into galleries worldwide, the Salmagundi Club, and museums, and have won numerous awards. Her work has been featured multiple times in magazines including Fine Art Connoisseur and American Art Collector. A few of Aki’s watercolor portraits are headed to the moon via the Lunar Codex in November 2023. The Lunar Codex includes the works of over 30,000 artists from 161 countries, in 4 time capsules launched to the moon.

Jodie Kain is a nationally recognized contemporary figurative realist working exclusively in pastels. Over many years Jodie extensively studied classical atelier methods of drawing, as well as modern expressionism in New York City, Pennsylvania, London, and Boston. After a 20-year career in software Jodie is happily painting full-time.

Arlyne Berzak - Treasure Pro Tem

In addition to numerous awards, Karen’s pastel painting work has garnered the honor of Signature Member with the American Artists Professional League, Master Circle with the International Association of Pastel Societies and Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America. Karen is an artist member of the Salmagundi Club, NYC,The Copley Society, Boston and the Lyme Art Association.

Karen conducts many teaching demonstrations and workshops throughout the United States.

Arlyne Berzak has a BA in English and Fine Art from William Paterson University and taught art and English in the Saddle Brook School system. She works in oil on canvas or wood as well as 3D mixed media. She is a Signature member and former Vice President of the AAPL and has been a board member for over 4 years. In addition, she has been a docent at the Montclair Museum for the past 5 years.

*Jon Bandish - Social Media Director

Fran Wood - Director

Jon Bandish is a painter, originally from Philadelphia, with roots in the Conshohocken area, who now lives and works near the beach in Delaware, USA. He studied Drawing and Painting at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and in Rome, Italy. He has worked at various museums and galleries and in many various capacities. His work is focused around nature and, in particular, our experiences of the ocean. Jon is also an accomplished musician who plays several instruments.

Fran is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts. She lives in northwest New Jersey. Her realistic/impressionistic oil and watercolor paintings (largely figurative) share the common theme of strong light and shadow.

Gary Eckhart - Grand National Exhibition Director

David Michael Salerno paints a wide range of subjects in landscape, still-life, figurative and portrait painting using oils. In Minneapolis, David obtained a foundation in classical realism at Atelier Lack and later at Townsend Atelier in Chattanooga, TN, where he is now an instructor. He is an elected member of the International Guild of Realism, a Signature Artist in the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS), and a member of the Portrait Society of America.

Gary is Professor Emeritus from the State University of New York College at Fredonia, where he served as head of the theatre production/design program for 24 years. An award-winning watercolor artist (sometimes oil painter) and Signature member of numerous watercolor societies, including the presti-gious Whiskey Painters of America, He resides in Warren, VT where he maintains a studio and is co-owner of Moosewalk Studios and Gallery. He has served as curator for the Annual Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition since its founding.

After an MBA and career in consumer products marketing for over 20 years Julia Bright achieved her dream of becoming a professional full time artist painting representational still lifes, landscapes and seascapes. She has received numerous awards and has been accepted into national and international museum and gallery shows. Julia shows her work at galleries in Boulder, Colorado, Taos, New Mexico, and Paris, France.

Nancy has been a life long lover of art, starting to draw at age 8. She had to balance art with her profession, software, for many years but now in retirement is able to get back to it.

Kathleen Curran Smits is a landscape painter, photographer and digital artist. She is adjunct faculty in the Graphic Design program of the Fine Arts Department at Manchester Community College. Kathleen has been teaching painting and drawing for over 20 years. Her paintings are in private collections in the USA, Canada, and Australia. Her work has been accepted into numerous regional and national exhibitions and has won awards. She is represented by the Pandion Gallery on Fishers Island, NY.

Welcome to the Grand National Exhibition 2023 marks a very special milestone for the American Artists Professional League as the organization celebrates 95 years of promoting realism in art. The annual Grand National Exhibition remains the flagship exhibition for the League and is one of the select exhibitions world-wide devoted exclusively to the promotion of representational art.

In addition to the more traditional mediums of oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor, the Grand National Exhibition welcomes work by graphic artists and sculptors.

The Grand National Exhibition would not exist if it were not for the dedicated Board of Directors of the American Artists Professional League. The volunteer board works throughout the year to ensure the success of this outstanding art event.

A huge thank you is extended to the officers and staff of the Salmagundi Club of New York for their assistance and hospitality.

ABOUT THE JUDGE - GARY GODBEE www.garygodbee.com

Gary Godbee received a B.F.A. degree in painting from Boston University in 1974, and studied graduate painting at Brooklyn College and Montclair State University. Well known as an instructor, he has taught drawing at the Art Students League, landscape and portrait painting workshops in Sante Fe for the Academy of Realist Art, and currently teaches painting courses at the Montclair Art Museum School/ Yard School of Art, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster.

Gary is best known for his realist landscape paintings. His work has been shown throughout the United States and can be found in collections in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Recent exhibitions include one-person shows at Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, NJ, the Studio 7 Art Gallery in Bernardsville, NJ, the J. Cacciola Gallery in NYC, and the Edward Williams Gallery at Fairleigh Dickenson University. He participated in the show ACOPAL: Exhibition of Contemporary American Realism at the Beijing World Art Museum that subsequently traveled through major art centers in various cities in China in 2012 - 2013. This exhibition was also shown at the Butler Institute in Youngstown, Ohio, and at the National Arts Club in NYC. His work was included in Super Real: Different Angles of Photorealism at the Citadelle Art Foundation in Canadian, Texas, and The Human Form, a show of figure paintings and drawings at Studio7 Gallery in Bernardsville, NJ. He had two-person shows at the Arts Guild of Rahway and the Tomasulo Gallery of Union County College in 2003, and has participated in many group shows, including recent shows at Gallery Henoch in NYC, the J. Cacciola Gallery in NYC and Bernardsville, Tatistcheff Gallery in NYC, City without Walls Gallery in Newark, and the Paul Robeson Gallery of Rutgers University.

His work was also featured in the 2017 N.J. Arts Annual: Special Edition at the N.J. State Museum in Trenton, the 2010 N.J. Arts Annual: Reality & Artifice at the N.J. State Museum, and in the 2005 N.J. Arts Annual: Place of Mind at the Montclair Art Museum. He received Fellowships in 2004 and 1994 from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Exceptional Merit Awards from the City Without Walls Gallery in Newark in 2002 and 1995, and a Merit Award from the Portrait Institute in New York in 1996. In 2000, he completed two twenty-foot wide murals commissioned through the NJ State Council on the Arts that are now permanently installed in the Department of Labor Building in Trenton. Most recently, he has a painting “Headlight Trees” accepted in the International Grants Exhibition 2023 in Oslo, Norway.

Gary is currently represented by Studio 7 Gallery (www.studio7artgallery.com ) in Bernardsville, NJ.

Please join us in congratulating Noelle Gunsay and Uma Maldonado, each of whom has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship to continue their respective fine arts education. Noelle is studying at Grand Central Atelier and Uma is studying at The Art Students League of New York. On behalf of the AAPL Board of Directors, we welcome Noelle & Uma to the AAPL community. We are gratified our scholarships can contribute to their success.

Noelle Gunsay The AAPL Award given by the Art Renewal Center “I want to depict integral experiences and connect to the viewer. I think people crave connection. We want someone to know the depths of our soul and continue loving us. We hope that our relationships will elevate us into a more loving state. This requires open and truthful communication in order to elevate, edify and codify.

“Many truths are universal. These include physical attributes like light, form, anatomy and gravity. They also include such conceptual aspects as religion, philosophy, culture and history, as well as such emotional components as pain, love, death, birth and sacrifice. Clarifying these patterns across time and space helps identify purpose and insight into an individual’s identity.

The American Artists Fund, an affiliated entity of the AAPL specifically established for educational and charitable purposes, was created in 1958. Through private and corporate donations to the AAF, the organization funds show awards and scholarships to students pursuing classical techniques. In 2023 two scholarships totaling $10,000 were awarded through the Art Renewal Center and The Art Students League.

“Art provides space for open communication based on truth and love. Every mark is a careful documentation of physical, conceptual and emotional interpretations of the human experience.

“Sometimes, when I look at a painting, I am flooded with emotion or intellectual curiosity and experience genuine connection. I find it’s necessary to connect through relatable subject matter and the everyday ‘stuff’ we encounter - people, objects, experiences. I believe the classical tradition embodies the most complete layers of truth, and illustrates why the beauty of traditional works transcends centuries.

“My focus for this next year will be to continue developing my painting and draftsmanship skills. Following this year, I want to study composition from old master works to understand how to articulate truth in a visual narrative.”

MEMBERSHIP LEVELS ASSOCIATE ARTIST MEMBER - annual dues $60 Supporter of representational and traditional realism. Help to promote, encourage, and advance the cause of fine arts in America. Associate level is for beginning artists, enthusiasts, and emerging artists. Associates Members are entitled to: Membership in a nationally prestigious art club Associate On-line Show, annual Studio Auction Complimentary Newsletters, inclusion in the AAPL Grapevine Discounted entry fee for the AAPL's annual juried show, Grand National Exhibition Member-Gallery and Member Map entry Limited social media reposts Annual National meeting.

Associate Artists applications and portfolios will be reviewed by the AAPL. To apply for membership as an Associate Artist Member (AA) please email the membership form along with 3-6 images of your work to admin@aaplinc.org. You will be contacted to arrange for the application fee.

Applications are reviewed at the monthly AAPL board meetings. In certain cases, an applicant for Associate Artist may be encouraged to accept an Elected Artist Membership. Associate Artists who are accepted into the Grand National Exhibition or wins an award in a members’ online show will automatically be promoted to Elected Artist Members.

ELECTED ARTIST MEMBER - annual dues $80 Those who have been approved by the Membership Committee of the National Board of Directors or those that have been accepted into one or more Grand National Exhibitions. Elected level is for emerging artists, semi-professional, and professionals. SIGNATURE MEMBER - annual dues $85 Benefits are the same as an Elected Artist Member, with these additions: Permission to append AAPL to the artist's signature on all their works Listing of honor in the GNE catalog.

Criteria: Acceptance into three Grand National Exhibitions and winner of one GNE Award.

NOTE: The award of Signature Membership requires the unanimous vote of approval by the AAPL Board of Directors.

LIFE MEMBER - one time fee of $1,000 Lifetime membership as an Artist or Art Supporter. Artists must be juried as Life Members using Elected Artist Member criteria. IN MEMORIUM Calvin Lynch Calvin Lynch was a highly trained and accomplished watercolorist. He studied at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art and the National Academy in New York for many years. Calvin passed on his knowledge as an instructor in his native Pittsburgh, where he also ran his own advertising studio for 25 years. Calvin earned AAPL Signature status, and additionally attained signature membership in the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, the Academic Artists Association, the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society, the Hudson Valley Art Association, Audubon Artists and the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. A nationally recognized artist, Calvin’s paintings were accepted in more than 125 juried shows, winning him numerous prizes. Much of his work is represented in private and corporate collections.

Mike Mazer Signature Member Mike Mazer, a Boston native, Navy veteran and a long time AAPL member and benefactor, exhibited his paintings in many Grand National Exhibitions beginning in 2000. After retiring from an eminent medical career, Mike renewed his endeavor in painting both in watercolor and oil and became a nationally and internationally award-winning artist and a two-term president of the New England Watercolor Society. He was a designated U.S. Coast Guard artist and exhibited his work across the country with many of his paintings in museums and public and private collections. Mike’s work was published numerous times in various publications.

Dino Sistilli Throughout Dino Sistilli’s 96 years he accomplished many things. A veteran of the World War II Army Air Corp, Fifth Air Force, he was an alumnus of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, an advertising art director, an Official US Coast Guard artist, a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and an AAPL Signature member. Dino was a distinguished artist who received multiple awards at the national and regional levels. His paintings have been displayed in galleries and exhibits across the United States and are part of the US Coast Guard permanent collection. An AAPL member for almost 30 years, Dino first showed his work at the 67th Grand National Exhibition. He won many awards at subsequent GNEs.

Kenju Urakubo Kenju Urakubo studied oil painting at Teikyo University in Tokyo before making his permanent home in New York. He volunteered his time to the AAPL, serving on the Board of Directors beginning in 2008 and as an Awards Juror for the 80th Grand National Exhibition. He also generously contributed to AAPL as a patron. For more than two decades, his serene oil paintings of female nudes graced AAPL’s Grand National Exhibitions, earning him Signature status. Kenju’s exhibitions began in the early 1960’s.

His work was widely shown in prestigious galleries and museums, winning him numerous awards. He was a finalist in the 2nd ARC Salon, a long time Salmagundi Club member and a member of the AAPL since 2001.
