FROM THE PRESIDENT - AKI KANO I am very happy to present the AAPL’s 94th Grand National Exhibition at the beautiful and historic Salmagundi Club! Congratulations to the very talented and accomplished artists in this exhibition.

It’s been gratifying to help organize this GNE and continue AAPL’s almost 100-year-old tradition.

In addition to the work involved in putting this show together, the past year has been exciting in general as we’ve embarked on a lot of new initiatives as we continue to evolve and grow.

We’re thrilled to provide more opportunities for our member artists…

Despite all the hardships and challenges, 2021 has been a productive and dynamic year for the AAPL. • The FIRST EVER Associates Members Only Online Exhibition - The support from our Associate Members is critical to AAPL, and we are delighted to provide this opportunity exclusively to Associate Members. This show can be viewed on our website, www.AAPLinc.org.

• AAPL member artists judged the awards for our online shows - We have many accomplished artists in our ranks, and we're proud to have begun a tradition of tapping several to serve as judges for our online shows, including the AA Members’ Show and our annual Spring Members-Only online show open to Elected Artist Members and above. We plan to continue to select established member artists to judge our online shows in the future.

• We donated two scholarships to ARC (Art Renewal Center) totaling $10,000 - This is the second year we have donated to ARC, but this year we increased our donation to $10,000. Daniel Zalla has won the Frank C. Wright Scholarship for $5K and Samuel Hoskins has won the AAPL Award for $5K. Our scholarship recipients’ excellent work is on display at this year’s show.

• Our 2nd Annual Studio Auction Sale with Bidsquare earlier this summer was a success! Our appreciation goes to all the participating artists whose work attracted thousands of art lovers to the Studio Auction. Eight works sold to collectors in South Carolina, North Carolina, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Malaysia!

• Have you seen our new Member Map? On AAPLinc.org is a Member Map where all members have their locations pinned.

Artists or the type of work they do may be searched or zoom in to find other members in your area. Please try out the new search feature and find your pin. Over the past year we’ve had an average of 2,000 map views per month.

• The FIRST EVER $300 and Less Sale on the www.AAPLinc.org - It has been gratifying to launch this unique opportunity to give artists and collectors the ability to purchase affordable artwork from leading realist artists in our member community.

• Online demos created by members- We introduced a new initiative where member artists have created informative demos for the AAPL community. These demos can be found on our website.

• New AAPL Board Members - Thanks to the blessing of Zoom, we have added several new board members from all over the country. (New board members have asterisks next to their names in the Board of Directors page).

We improved our awards structure this year to give winners more substantial awards. This year, we have three tiers of awards plus merchandise awards.

Thank you to the AAPL Board members who worked tirelessly to make this show possible especially Gary Eckhart the GNE Exhibition Chair. We are especially grateful to the loyal support from the organization’s members, award sponsors, patrons, and benefactors.

2022 GRAND NATIONAL EXHIBITION Welcome to the 94th Grand National Exhibition!

The Annual Grand National Exhibition (GNE), this year celebrating 94 years, is a most unique celebration of the fine arts. The Exhibition, presented by the American Artists’ Professional League, is one of the select exhibitions world-wide devoted exclusively to the promotion of realism and representational art.

In addition to the more traditional mediums of oil, pastel, and watercolor, the GNE welcomes work by graphic artists and sculptors. New for 2022 is a special category for acrylics in keeping with the more contemporary approaches to painting.

347 artists submitted 622 entries into the jury pool for the 2022 GNE. Of these entries, 143 works were accepted through an extensive jury process.

Mounting an exhibition on the scale of the Grand National requires a year of planning and is made possible through the volunteer efforts of a dedicated board of directors.

A huge thank you is extended to the officers and staff of the Salmagundi Club for their assistance.

The board welcomes you hoping you leave with a renewed appreciation of artists working with realistic and representational approaches to their subjects.

Aki Kano is a representational watercolor portrait artist who received her B.F.A from the University of Michigan, as well as a degree in Fashion Design from FIT in NYC. After working as a fashion and handbag designer for over 15 years, she discovered her passion for watercolor painting in 2014. She has won numerous awards, and has been accepted into prestigious juried shows, museums, and galleries.

Arlyne Berzak has a BA in English and Fine Art from William Paterson University and taught art and English in the Saddle Brook School system.

She works in oil on canvas or wood as well as 3D mixed media.

She is a signature member and Vice President of the AAPL and has been a board member for over 4 years.

In addition, she has been a docent at the Montclair Museum for the past 5 years.

International plein air and studio artist Jeanette Herron has lived both in Italy and the US. Now permanently living in northwest Florida, Jeanette is both a practicing CPA and a professional artist and workshop instructor.

She is the treasurer for the AAPL.

Fran is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts. She lives in northwest New Jersey.

Her realistic/impressionistic oil and watercolor paintings (largely figurative) share the common theme of strong light and shadow.

Barry Shiff – Director

Gary is Professor Emeritus from the State University of New York College at Fredonia, where he served as head of the theatre production/design program for 24 years. An award-winning watercolor artist (sometimes oil painter) and signature member of numerous watercolor societies, including the prestigious Whiskey Painters of America, he resides in Warren, Vermont where he maintains a studio and is co-owner of Moosewalk Studios and Gallery.

He has served as curator for the Annual Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition since its founding.

Originally from the UK, Lee graduated with a BFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He is also a graduate of the Illustrators Workshop in Connecticut.

Lee has won numerous awards in Branding, Illustration and Painting.

He has taught painting, drawing, and has lectured on the arts globally.

Lee is currently a traditional portrait artist - working in oil and pastel.

Jodie Kain is a nationally recognized contemporary realist artist working exclusively in pastels. Over many years Jodie extensively studied classical atelier methods of drawing, as well as modern expressionism in New York City, Pennsylvania, London, and Boston.

Who would’ve guessed her 20-year career in software was actually preparation to be AAPL’s Director for online initiatives and social media?

Barry’s subject matter is the nostalgia of historic New Jersey, and New York.

He brings back memories of the good-old- days including traditional paintings of old railroad stations, towns, boardwalks, and amusement parks.

In his paintings he captures life as it was in the early 20th century. Barry uses traditional materials such as watercolor and oil.

Julia Bright – Director After an MBA and career in consumer products marketing for over 20 years Julia Bright achieved her dream of becoming a professional full time artist painting representational still lifes, landscapes and seascapes.

She has received numerous awards and has been accepted into prestigious national and international museum and gallery shows. Julia shows her work at galleries in Boulder, Colorado, Taos, New Mexico, and Paris, France.

ABOUT THE JUDGE MARILYN SYMMES

Marilyn Symmes is a New York City-based curator with expertise in prints, drawings, and photographs. After starting her career at the Smith College Museum of Art, followed by the Detroit Institute of Arts, she was the curator in charge of graphic arts collections at the Toledo Museum of Art, Cooper-Hewitt/Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. Her books include Impressions of New York, Prints from the New-York Historical Society (2005) and the monograph Dancing with the Dark: Joan Snyder Prints (2011), as well as other publications on prints, drawings, photographs and artist-illustrated books. Selected recent projects include serving as a curatorial consultant on prints for the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation’s future on-line catalogue raisonné; volunteer cataloguing of American and British prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and contributing an essay to the book, Only Human/Judy Dater (2017).

a $5,000 scholarship each to continue their classical fine art training at the Florence Academy of Art - keeping the tradition of Americans studying in Florence alive!

On behalf of the AAPL Board of Directors, welcome Daniel & Samuel to the AAPL community. We are gratified our scholarship can contribute to their success.

The ARC awarded the AAPL Frank C. Wright Scholarship to Daniel and The AAPL Award to Samuel. Both young Realists are showing their work at the 94th Grand National Exhibition. The American Artists Fund, an affiliated entity of the AAPL specifically designed for educational and charitable purposes, was created in 1958. Through private and corporate donations to the AAF, the organization funds show awards and scholarships to students studying classical techniques. In 2022 two scholarships totaling $10,000 have been awarded through the Art Renewal Center.

MEMBERSHIP LEVELS ASSOCIATE ARTIST MEMBER - annual dues $55 Supporter of representational and traditional realism. Help to promote, encourage, and advance the cause of fine arts in America. Associate level is for beginning artists, enthusiasts, and emerging artists.

Associates Members are entitled to: - Membership in a nationally prestigious art club - Associate On-line Show, annual Studio Auction - Complimentary Newsletters, inclusion in the AAPL Grapevine - Discounted entry fee for the AAPL's annual juried show, Grand National Exhibition - Member-Gallery and Member Map entry - Limited social media reposts - Annual National meeting.

Associate Artists applications and portfolios will be reviewed by the AAPL. To apply for membership as an Associate Artist Member (AA) please email the membership form along with 3-6 images of your work to americanartistsproleague@gmail.com. You will be contacted to arrange for the application fee.

Applications are reviewed at the monthly AAPL board meetings, usually held on the second Monday of the month. In certain cases, an applicant for Associate Artist may be encouraged to accept an Elected Artist Membership. Associate Artists who are accepted into the Grand National Exhibition or wins an award in a members’ online show will automatically be promoted to Elected Artist Members.

ELECTED ARTIST MEMBER - annual dues $75 Those who have been approved by the Membership Committee of the National Board of Directors or those that have been accepted into one or more Grand National Exhibitions. Elected level is for emerging artists, semi-professional, and professionals. Benefits: - Membership in a nationally prestigious art club - Exhibit in Spring Members Online Shows, annual Studio Auction, additional online and in-person shows - Complimentary Newsletters, inclusion in the AAPL Grapevine - Social Media Features and reposts - Discounted entry fee for the AAPL's annual juried show, Grand National Exhibition - Member-Gallery and Member Map entry - Annual National meeting.

FELLOW ARTIST MEMBER - annual dues $75 Long-time Members who have achieved the level of Fellow will retain their status.

SIGNATURE MEMBER - annual dues $75 Benefits are the same as an Elected Artist Member, with these additions: - Permission to append AAPL to the artist's signature on all their works - Listing of honor in the GNE catalog. Criteria: - Acceptance into three Grand National Exhibitions and winner of one GNE Award.

NOTE: The award of Signature Membership requires the unanimous vote of approval by the AAPL Board of Directors.

LIFE MEMBER - one time fee of $1,000 Lifetime membership as an Artist or Art Supporter. Life Member artists may enjoy the same benefits as Elected Artist Members.

Hiram Ball // 1946-2020 Master sculptor Hiram Ball was a Signature Member of AAPL. After a long career living and working in Pittsburgh, Hiram retired to Cape Cod where he continued his passion for figurative sculpting.

He was self-taught, taking workshops and studying anatomy books to perfect his skills.

Hiram was a proud member of the National Sculpture Society in NY, Cultural Center of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Museum of Art, Cotuit Center For The Arts, PAAM, The Beachcombers, and Paul Schulenburg’s “Wednesday Painting Group“, as the sole sculptor. The culmination of his sculpting career was a solo exhibition, “Hiram Ball: Master of Media” at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, which now holds one of his bronze relief sculptures in its permanent collection.

Donald R. Biehn // 1942-2022 Donald Biehn was a successful freelance illustrator, art director, and gifted artist. Don was an active participant in studio drawing groups, art crawls, corporate exhibits, and gallery shows. Upon retirement, Don immersed himself in watercolor and plein air oil painting. He received awards in local, regional, and national juried art shows.

In addition to being an Associate member of the AAPL, he was a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, and the American Society of Marine Artists.

IN MEMORIUM Jack Garver // 1925-2021 Internationally-renowned watercolorist and World War II veteran Jack Garver was an AAPL Elected Artist Member since 2013. Jack also had memberships in many regional organizations, including the American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club New York, New England Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Taos National Society of Watercolorists, the Watercolor USA Honor Society, and The Artists’ Fellowship. Throughout his life, he passed his art knowledge on through teaching both studio courses and art history. His paintings won many awards in national and international competitions and appeared in many national art publications, including two feature articles in American Artist Magazine.

Alexander Masyk // 1947-2022 In addition to being an Elected Artist Member of AAPL since 2019, Alexander Masyk, MFA, was a Resident Artist of the Salmagundi Club in New York, a member of the Oil Painters of America; and an elected member of Allied Artists of America, Impressionist Society of America, Audubon Artists, and the National Union of Ukrainian Artists. He was an Associate member of the Pastel Society of America.

Sharon Way-Howard // 1952-2022 An AAPL member since 2007, Sharon Way-Howard was the first woman to chair the art committee of the Salmagundi Club and served on the board of directors. She was also an Associate member of the Pastel Society of America; an elected member of Academic Artists, Audubon Artists, and a US Coast Guard Artist.

Nydia Preede // 1926-2021 Nydia Preede’s work reflected a background in psychology, fine art, and applied and technical art.

She held a BA and MA in teaching and was certified to teach art on secondary and adult levels. She was a Fellow Member of AAPL since 1990, and member of the AAPL board for many years. Ms. Preede used traditional and innovative techniques and media to explore contemporary concepts with realism, symbolism, and abstraction, often in a series. Ms. Preede’s work has been seen worldwide in galleries, art centers, and museums, and have won awards, and appeared in four books. Her work is included In private and public collections.
