A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Patrick McCullough

What an honor it has been to serve as the AAF Dubuque president for the 2021–2022 year and lead this team of incredible talent. Preparing for tonight, the board looked back on the 2021 year in awe of what the world collectively went through. Tonight’s theme is playful on the surface, but also pays homage to deeper truths.

The parallels shared between the 1960s and 2021 are potent. Growing social unrest, mounting counterculture movements, and a systemic shift from the traditional way of life permeated both time periods. Through all the uncertainty, we adapted and strove to produce great bodies of work—work we are proud to honor and celebrate. So to everyone who rolled up their sleeves, cheers to you. Cheers to the designers, writers, videographers, strategists, project managers, analysts, and everyone who wakes up every day committed to their craft. Thank you for the talent you bring and your commitment to making the world a more creative and beautiful place.

The biggest thanks for tonight is owed to AA Awards co-directors Johanna Talarico and Danielle Stowell. Both have plates that are plenty full thanks to their day jobs. And the effort and input required to produce this event is a job in itself, so Johanna and Danielle are owed a tremendous amount of praise for making this all possible.

Lastly, while the awards themselves are gratifying, the greater point is to celebrate the fact we get to do this for a living. We’re a community of people paid to create and to push boundaries. I’m proud of our industry and the people in it for having that spark, and I hope you are, too.

The Silver Medal Award was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry's standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

This year’s winner is the epitome of all the above. She has 15+ years of experience in the industry involving event planning, sales, and her specialty…digital media.

Her expertise in the field of Digital Marketing has helped her current company of over 13 years, OnMedia Advertising roll out many new technological advances helping customers develop effective marketing solutions. Her creative ideas, expertise, and ability to give her all to her clients has earned her multiple Shining Star awards, which are given to the top sales executives from across the country.

Her colleagues describe this person as having an endless array of ideas that are both creative and right for the client, which has earned her the nickname “Digital Queen.”

Shannon Murphy OnMedia

She has been heavily involved in Dubuque’s local AAF chapter throughout her career, even serving on the district board. She is passionate about helping others build their skills and advance their careers in advertising through her many connections in the industry, helping bring in training and programming events for the club. Her involvement in AAF merited her the Member of the Year in 2011.

In addition to her commitment to the local advertising community, she has also served as a board member for the American Red Cross, assisting annually with the Shoes that Fit program. She is also involved in her parish and her son’s school, volunteering her time and marketing skills to help the parent association.

In her free time, she enjoys family time with her husband, Brian their two sons.

They love taking local family adventures and are busy chauffeuring her sons and all their activities.

With her busy schedule, she could not make it to the event this evening, but we were able to surprise her on camera with the news. Congratulations to Shannon Murphy, this year’s Silver Medal Award recipient.

AMERICAN ADVERTISING FEDERATION OF DUBUQUE

Member of the Year

The AAF Dubuque Member of the Year Award is given to an individual who has worked hard over the year to be a driving force behind the American Advertising Federation of Dubuque.

This nominee joined the board in 2019 as our Membership Director and than later became our Communications & Social Media Director in 2020. She regularly donates her time and talent to the AAF Dubuque organization. And since the beginning, she has gone above and beyond to support the needs of AAF. Early on, it became clear that this nominee is a significant asset to our club!

With more than a dozen years of experience in marketing, web editing, design and communication, her talents have helped the club in many ways. She not only has shaped our digital voice but she has redesigned our website, enhanced our social media presence, and has come to my rescue more times than I can count with help on crazy Addy deadlines. She is always the first to volunteer to help in anyway she can.

Mallory Blondin

Dupaco Community Credit Union

As the Lead Content Developer at Dupaco Community Credit Union, she oversees the planning and creation of content that supports the credit union’s educational efforts to empower members to reach their goals. She identifies content opportunities that align with consumer trends, promotions and strategic initiatives. And she uses marketing analytics to help guide her decisions.

The content she coordinates might be delivered through an email, blog post, web page, social media post or digital ad. Her content toolbox is nothing short of inspiring. Whether it’s written, graphic, photographic, video or audio, she brings value to every piece that’s created. No matter the project, she collaborates with everyone on the team to ensure that Dupaco’s branded experiences are seamlessly connected. Best of all, she shares her knowledge, insights and feedback with those around her—inspiring everyone who has the privilege of working with her to continue to know, show and grow too.

She’s not just crafting content experiences, though. As a dedicated mom of three, she’s often creating memorable experiences with her kids and husband, David. In the summer, you’ll find her most weekends at the campground with her family. It’s their happy place.

And even if you’re not a camper, you look forward to hearing about her family’s latest glamping adventures.

And in between work and home, she makes room to volunteer with Chelsey’s Dream Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families with the cost of adoption.

Whether she’s at home or at work, she’s someone you want in your corner. She’s a trusted mentor, a valued coworker, an inspiring leader and an amazing friend whom everyone can depend on.

PROFESSIONAL JUDGES Andrew Caturano Art Director, Arts & Letters Creative Co. Richmond, VA Andrew is an Art Director for Arts & Letters, Creative Co., a vertically integrated creative company that has combined the strategic rigor and conceptual ability of a traditional creative agency with the speed and craft of a modern production studio. The result is a creative company that can research, concept, prototype and deliver ideas from the abstraction of the strategic phase through the reality of production.

Andy Gosendi Associate Creative Director, Dalton Agency Jacksonville, FL An art director with a clean desk and an organized plan of attack is somewhat alien in the creative world… and he speaks two languages fluently. But that’s only part of what makes Andy so unique. Spending the first few years of his life in Bogotá, Colombia gave Andy — and ultimately his clients — a point of view that’s off the beaten path. He uses his undeniable design talent to create award winning campaigns and the like that are aesthetically pleasing while always conveying something deeper. Maybe that’s why his 20-year career has garnered 40+ ADDY awards (local, district and national), 10+ American Graphic Design awards, a SXSW website finalist as well as being featured in publications such as the Logo Lounge and American Corporate Identity series. Andy’s worked on a diverse group of clients across several industries that includes creative work for the City of Jacksonville; Swisher; web.com; Alicia Keys; and the PGA Tour, to name a few. When he isn’t creating stunning designs, Andy enjoys teaching his young son about the finer things in life . . . travel, food, photography and “THE Ohio State” football.

Jennifer Hohn Partner & COO, Articulation Denver, CO Jennifer Hohn is a partner and Chief Creative Officer at Articulation – a full-service advertising agency in Colorado. Jen makes and leads category changing work that brings brands to life. She started her career at Monigle, the largest independent brand consultancy in the US. From there she moved to boutique design shops and then found her home in the advertising world.

She quickly rose through the ranks at Vladimir Jones to lead and grow their creative department. In 2020, she and her strategic partner started Articulation. Throughout her career she’s worked on a wide range of brands like Intel, HP, The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), Rock Bottom Brewery, Snowmass Tourism, and US Figure Skating.

Over the last decade she’s judged many district and regional shows for the American Advertising Federation (AAF) across the nation. Jen is also a former co-chair for The Fifty, Colorado’s AAF Award Show. She’s been President of Ad Club Colorado, an ambassador for 99U, and advisor for The One Club. Jen contributes articles and speaks on creative development for trade organizations around the globe. In her free time, she loves getting lost in great films and music, renovating her home with her husband, and hitting the mountain trails with her pup.

Jason Yates Creative / Art Director & Video Editor, Front Porch Buffalo, NY Jason Yates is a co-founder of Front Porch, a newly launched Micro-Agency based in Buffalo, NY. He is a creative director, art director and video editor with over 15 years of agency and freelance experience. Working with a range of brands that includes The University at Buffalo, JDRF, Caterpillar, and Purolator, his work has won numerous awards at the local and national level. As a past board member, and active participant of AAF Buffalo, he has cochaired the WNY ADDYs four times.

STUDENT JUDGES Brandon Corpstein Graphic Designer, McCullough Creative Brandon skills cover everything from conception and creative development of design projects to print, advertising, branding, packaging and digital mediums.

Tim Connery Producer, DreamCatcher Productions Tim graduated from Columbia College Chicago 2009, and has over a decade of experience working with agencies, marketing departments, and filmmakers all over the US, to produce high quality video content in the media industry, including hundreds of commercial/corporate projects in addition to two distributed feature films.

He writes, produces, directs, and edits - handling the entire process from idea to finished product.

Mari Oates Innovation and MakerSpace Coordinator National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium Mari Oates has a BA in Anthropology and Graduate work in Museum Studies. At the Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, she oversees the new MakerSpace and the development of programs and curriculum for the River of Innovation exhibit. Her role includes writing curriculum, training the staff, and managing the space.

Joe Wheeler Director of Customer Experience, HTLF Joe’s career spans 30+ years in senior management roles in banking including 18 years with Citibank, CEO/Pres of ReliaStar Bank and starting ING Direct in the US. He left banking, spending a few years with KPMG where he consulted large banks (Citi, Chase, Huntington, 5/3, US Bank). While doing this work, he saw an opportunity in the fact that the big four consulting firms weren’t willing to help community banks and credit unions. He filled this niche by starting Field Midwestern Consulting which was totally focused on helping these two groups with their strategic and marketing planning, board, and regulatory readiness as well as risk management. Most recently Joe spent 5 years with JD Power managing two of their national bank practices helping financial institutions with up to $300B in deposits.

Missing banking, his goal became to return to industry, and through that search he met HTLF. He is now SVP – Director of Customer Experience there.

Joe was born and raised in Chicago and has had the chance to move all over the country for work. He and his wife Anne now live in Dubuque.

These treats originated in Czechoslovakia and made its way to Texas as well as Cedar Rapids, IA in the 1800’s. Our ingredients are in-house crafted daily which guarantees freshness. Now, Ricky Kolache Express is our brand-new food truck. This food truck sticks to our roots and provides that freshness all of our supporters are used too. The purpose of this food truck is to reach all our guest who cannot make it to our store sites. Ricky Kolache Express is set to travel the Nation. Our audience are people who are looking for something different yet delicious. So, our objective is to gather that audience and hook them, so they keep coming back.
